IMPOUND: the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway will be the first impound race of 2007, there are five impound races in 2007, both Talladega races, both Richmond races and Daytona in July.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

How to break a tie during qualifying? (same speed/time) When drivers are tied for a starting spot during qualifying, it is broken by owners points standings(not drivers).

NASCAR Statement Regarding Its Day In Court: NASCAR presented its case to the court today [about allowing AT&T to sponsor the #31 car] and we eagerly await a decision. NASCAR is defending every driver, team and track involved with NASCAR. The courts ruling will be important to protect the very flexible and open environment that allows for hundreds of sponsors to successfully participate in NASCAR. Its important to remember that Sprint Nextel is a cornerstone sponsor that benefits the entire industry by way of its contribution to the championship points fund, technology bringing fans closer to the sport and its massive marketing and advertising campaigns. NASCAR will continue to protect the industry in any future attacks on our key partners.(NASCAR PR)
AND Jeff Burton’s #31 Richard Childress Racing Chevy will bear the familiar Cingular markings for at least two more weeks. There was no decision Thursday on AT&T’s request for an injunction to have its logos placed on Burton’s car. Instead, U.S. District court judge Marvin H. Schoob listened to almost four hours of arguments from NASCAR, AT&T and Nextel and then set May 7 as the deadline for briefs to be submitted in the case. At Thursday’s preliminary injunction hearing, NASCAR attorneys defended the decision to prevent Cingular – the primary sponsor of the #31 car – from changing its branding on the car to the AT&T blue globe. Cingular merged with AT&T in December, and AT&T is phasing out the Cingular brand. Cingular is arguing that its rights include changing its brand name to AT&T. “We have changed our name, but we are the same company as we were before we changed our name,” said David Balser, attorney for AT&T Inc.(Associated Press)(4-27-2007)

Brooklyn beats Philly for #00 Pizza scheme: David Reutimann’s #00-Toyota Camry will be sporting a paint scheme hyping Domino’s Brooklyn Style pizza, the winner of the company’s “Great Debate” in which fans chose Brooklyn over the Philly Cheese Steak pie in a matchup intended to mirror the sporting competition between New York and Philadelphia. The two-week promotion drew more than 50,000 voters online and at Phoenix and Texas Motor Speedway, where 25,000 slices were served.(USA Today), see images of the schemes on my #00 Team Schemes page.(4-27-2007) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2007/00cup.htm

International Motorsports Hall Of Fame Inducts Donlavey, Hendrick, Ingram, Johnson, Rainey, Smith: The 17th Annual International Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony marks a class of some of the greatest achievers in motorsports history ever inducted into this prestigious Hall of Fame. On Thursday night, the black tie ceremony at the Speed Channel Dome located outside Talladega Superspeedway honored the storied careers of the 2007 class – Junie Donlavey, Ray Hendrick, Jack Ingram, Warren Johnson, Wayne Rainey and Bruton Smith along with 2006 Driver of the Year Jimmie Johnson, reigning Nextel Cup Series Champion, as well as eight-time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Frank Kimmel. Longtime car owner Junie Donlavey was inducted by former NASCAR driver, Harry Gant. Ray Hendrick was inducted by Alabama Gang member and former NASCAR champion, Bobby Allison. Jack Ingram was inducted by NASCAR Vice-President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter. “The Professor” was Warren Johnson, inducted by Bob Frey. Wayne Rainey was inducted by longtime TV personality Dave Despain. Entrepreneur Bruton Smith was inducted by NASCAR legend Junior Johnson.(TSS PR)(4-27-2007)

Rockford-Montgomery Labs Inc. and its 360 OTC brand have been removed as the title sponsor to the World of Outlaws. But for now, it doesn’t have anything to do with the company’s sponsorships in NASCAR. The Athens, Ga.-based company has sponsorships with two trucks, driven by Tyler Walker and Johnny Benson, in the Craftsman Truck Series, as well as Jeremy Mayfield’s #36 Toyota in the Nextel Cup Series. All three are scheduled to race this week – the trucks at Kansas, Mayfield at Talladega, AL. All three teams will carry the green and black colors of 360OTC, a team spokeswoman said.(Augusta Chronicle)(4-26-2007)

WHO’S HOT: Fast pit stops are one reason Mark Martin (right) has been so successful this year in the Ginn Racing No. 01 Chevy. The No. 01 pit crew has won the Checkers/Rally award as the fastest pit crew in four of the eight races this year. Second fastest with two wins has been the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 crew of Denny Hamlin. Sebastien Bourdais has won 25 of his 62 career starts in Champ Car for an astounding winning percentage of .403. Here’s how that percentage compares to the top winning percentages of some of the top NASCAR drivers in history: David Pearson, 105 of 574 (.183); Richard Petty, 200 of 1,184 (.169), Jeff Gordon, 76 of 481 (.158), Dale Earnhardt, 76 of 676 (.112).

WHO’S NOT: Easily, the season’s biggest disappointment is Evernham Motorsports. Kasey Kahne led Nextel Cup with six victories last year, but he’s 33rd in the points with only one top 10 after eight races. Elliott Sadler is a quiet 17th, and Scott Riggs is a dismal 37th. … Still-struggling Ryan Newman has slipped to 26th in the points with three finishes outside the top 30 in the last four races. Newman hasn’t scored a top 10 since early March at Las Vegas.

HE SAID IT: ”The things that bug me the most about him just running into you for no reason, just coming up.” – Jeff Gordon on what he misses most about the late Earnhardt. Gordon tied Earnhardt on the career wins list at 76 with his victory at Phoenix last Saturday night.

NASCAR alters restrictor plates to slow Busch cars: NASCAR has ordered its Busch Series teams to use restrictor plates with smaller hole sizes after officials determined that speeds from Thursday’s first practice were too high as Phoenix Racing’s Mike Wallace posted a lap of 197.342 mph at Talladega Superspeedway. The original restrictor plates had holes of 30/32nds of an inch. The new restrictor plates have holes of 29/32nds of an inch, meaning less air will flow through the carburetor. NASCAR Vice President Jim Hunter said the engines are expected to turn out 15 to 20 less horsepower as a result. Rookie practice was cancelled. The new plate was run in the Nextel Cup Series in 2004.(SceneDaily.com)(4-26-2007)

Mike Wallace to Have Special Guests at Talladega: Mike Wallace will head to Talladega this weekend in hopes of repeating his success at Daytona, but he will do it with the Hoover High School football coaching staff in tow. Head coach, Rush Propst, wide receivers coach, Shawn Sutton, along with defensive coaches, Chris Davis, Kevin Sherrer, and Tony Pugh will be on hand to cheer Wallace on for both the Busch Series and the Nextel Cup races. The coaches will be introduced at the Busch Series driver meeting on Saturday morning. MTV’s ‘Two-A-Days’ is a reality show that profiles the nation’s top high school football program, Hoover High School, in Hoover, Alabama. The television viewing audience is exposed to the inner workings and nuances associated with both playing and coaching in America’s premier high school football program.(Player Management International PR)(4-26-2007)

Kansas Entry List: There are 36 cars on the preliminary entry list for Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway. The complete list is posted on the Kansas Race Page.(4-24-2007) http://www.jayski.com/cts/next/2007/5kansas2007.htm#entry

News & Notes Part I – Kansas Speedway:
A collection of familiar faces will join six series champions in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway. Perhaps the most notable driver returning to action is Joe Ruttman (#18 Fastenal Dodge). Ruttman has competed in six full seasons in the Craftsman Truck Series, and has finished no worse than sixth in the standings. He finished second in 1995, the series’ inaugural season. Ruttman, 62, already is in the record books as the oldest driver to win a race in the Craftsman Truck Series. He has 13 career wins, the last coming in at Pikes Peak in May 2001 when he was 56 years and 6 months old.

Another notable name making her season debut is Kelly Sutton (#51 Team Copaxone Chevy). Sutton has been a series regular since making her debut in 2003. Sutton holds the record for most starts (51) and most winnings ($442,882) by a female competitor. Her start will mark the sixth consecutive year that a female driver has competed in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

The two series veterans will be joining arguably the deepest field in series history. Six former champions are among the many teams in the running to win the 2007 championship. Mike Skinner (#5 Toyota Tundra Toyota), the series’ first champion, is the current standings leader over defending champion Todd Bodine (#30 Lumber Liquidators Toyota). Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 AES Chevy), champion in 1996 and 1998, is fourth in the standings. Ted Musgrave (#9 Team ASE Toyota), the 2005 champion, is fifth, one point behind Hornaday. Jack Sprague (#60 Con-Way Freight Toyota), the series’ only three-time champion, is sixth, and 2003 champion Travis Kvapil (#6 K&N Filters Ford) is ninth. Bodine (2005) is the only champion to win at Kansas Speedway. There have been no repeat winners in six races at the track.

South Point Racing Crew Member Keeps Eye On NFL Draft: Chris Justice is one of a growing number of ex-football players who are joining NASCAR as over-the-wall crew members. Justice, the tire specialist and catch can man for the #77 South Point Racing Chevy of Brendan Gaughan, was a starting defensive back for Wake Forest University from 1997-2001.

Roush Fenway Racing has announced that Simply Wow, a division of Source Direct Holdings, will sponsor it’s #99 Ford Fusion in the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Kansas Speedway on April 27 and at Kentucky Speedway on May 12. Roush Fenway Racing driver Erik Darnell will be behind the wheel for both events.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(4-26-2007)

Cooper Bussmann joins MB Motorsports at Kansas Speedway for the first of Craftsman Truck races in 2007. Scott Lynch will handle the driving duties for all the Cooper Bussmann sponsored races.(MB Racing PR)(4-26-2007)

Xpress Motorsports names driver for Kansas: Entry list shows former Busch & Truck Series driver, Kenny Hendrick as the driver of the #16 Xpress Motorsports Chevy for this weekend’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway. Sponsor to be announced.(4-26-2007)

Dusty Drake to perform National Anthem at Kansas: Kansas Speedway announced today that country singer-songwriter Dusty Drake, who’s current single is “Say Yes,” will perform the national anthem prior to the Craftsman Truck Series race on April 28.(Kansas Speedway PR)(4-25-2007)
