Weird and Wild Outcome at Phoenix

by Heather Meyer ~ April 25th, 2007. Filed under: Articles by Heather.

Furniture Row Racing had a weekend of ups and downs at Phoenix. After a 29th place qualifying run, driver Kenny Wallace and the #78 team were optimistic about the outcome of the race.

However, multiple challenges arose ranging from a window net, to a black flag, and ultimately to the rear end of Carl Edward’s car. Hold on for the ride as General Manager, Joe Garone provides insight into the wild race at Phoenix for the #78.”Phoenix was a weekend with very high peaks and very low, dark, valleys.

The team started out with a solid qualifying effort and a good handling car. At the start of the race, the handling on the car was outside of the box of competitive times. This ultimately led us to going down a lap to the leader. After two pit stops and a few brilliant adjustments made to the car, we found ourselves making up 1/2 a lap and racing wheel to wheel with DEI competitor Paul Menard for the lucky dog position. What we didn’t know was that Kenny was racing Menard with one hand holding the steering wheel and one hand holding the window net which had become dislodged from it’s mount.NASCAR recognized what he was doing and black flagged us to fix the problem. Now we were three laps down, but Kenny continued to race hard running laps as fast, and in some cases faster than the leaders. We were trying to make the best out of a bad situation. With 30 laps to go, Dave Blaney decided to pit, and slowed on the track before pulling off of the line of traffic. This caused Carl Edwards to rear end Blaney, which caused Kenny to rear end Carl. This was the end of a long night.

Talladega is next on the schedule we will be bringing a new bodied car, National Day of Prayer colors, and are expecting great things from the weekend.

Tune in this weekend to watch Kenny and the #78 team take on Talladega. However, if you just can’t wait until the weekend to get your fix of the Hermanator, check out this week’s episode of the SPEED Road Tour Challenge at Texas.
