Mooresville, NC (February 12, 2010)- Speedweeks at Daytona has a whole new wrinkle this year, lots of them, in fact.
With new rules packages and tight racing, the Sprint Cup cars are beating and banging like never before. Already, 28 Cup cars have been damaged in racing incidents from February 5th through the Shootout, practice on February 10th and the Gatorade Duels.
While this is bad for the race car fabricators, it’s good for leading metal supplier Stock Car Steel & Aluminum. In fact, the metal service center that specializes in the NASCAR market now says Daytona will now be one of the busiest races of the year for the company.
Greg Fornelli, CEO of Stock Car Steel, says that through the Gatorade Duels at Daytona, more than nine tons – some 18,480 pounds — of metal has already been ruined. This totals more than $42,000, roughly $1,500 per car in just metal materials.
“Our business is all about providing new metal and supplies for race cars, so this is good for our business,” says Fornelli. “Hopefully all the close racing will make it great for fans, too.”
