Hoo, boy, I stirred up a hornet’s nest with yesterday’s article. Didn’t really intend to, but I surely did.
I think we have at least something from every series that we usually cover here in the Stock Car Gazette today. There’s almost more CTS news today than Cup, too.

“Ironhead Tribute” or “In Your Face, Intimidator!”?
by: Mike Irwin
I didn’t see the end of the race myself, but I have read several recaps of the race at Phoenix, and the actions of the #24 team in having Jeff Gordon drive around with a #3 flag, as a “tribute” to Jeff tying the number of Cup wins that Dale Earnhardt (Sr.) has.

Army National Guard To Recognize Soldiers at Talladega Superspeedway: The Army National Guard will recognize recently deployed Soldiers at Talladega Superspeedway during the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Busch Series race on April 28th and the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR NEXTEL Nextel Cup Series race on April 29th. The two chosen groups of 25 Soldiers each will include many Guardsmen who have recently deployed in defense of the War on Terror. The Guard is extending these hospitality days to its members in conjunction with its ongoing partnership with Hendrick Motorsports and the #25 racecar driver, Casey Mears. Soldiers recognized at the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race on Sunday will be comprised of Alabama Army National Guardsmen chosen from a variety of Guard units around the state. Many of these Soldiers have recently served their country in Iraq, while others have served in their own communities during recent natural disasters including Hurricane Katrina. The Soldiers will be provided with entry passes to the race and access to a special hospitality trailer on the infield. “We want to recognize and show our appreciation for the selfless service of these Soldiers,” says Alabama Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Commander COL Anthony Cottles. “Our presence in NASCAR has been a great way for us to get the word out about joining the Guard, and now these hospitality days extend that presence to help us show our gratitude to existing Soldiers as well.” For the Saturday Aaron’s 312 Busch Series race, the Guard will honor the Mississippi Army National Guard 155th Armor Brigade with a similar infield hospitality package and with a one-time-only paint scheme that prominently features that brigade’s emblem. – Talladega Superspeedway, Press Release

Boris Said and No Fear Racing set for Talladega: #60-Boris Said, who qualified sixth and placed 14th overall at the 2007 Daytona 500, will return to Nextel Cup Series action this weekend at the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. Driving for the Roush-Fenway No Fear Racing, Said, from Carlsbad, California, will guide the #60 No Fear Energy Ford Fusion. “We’re real excited to be back racing again and I’m hoping we can carry the momentum we have from Daytona over to Talladega,” offered Said while packing up his driving suits and helmets this morning. “Our number one goal at Talladega this weekend is to make the race. Just making a Nextel Cup races has become so hard now, that we’ll be pleased to just make the show.” No Fear Racing tam owner Mark Simo is also excited about the team’s chances this weekend’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega. “You enter every race hoping for the opportunity to be competitive,” reasoned Simo. “We’re hoping we can do well at Talladega. “With a limited schedule – the team will also compete at Infineon, the Pepsi 400, Watkins Glen and the Talladega October race – first we hope to start the weekend by qualifying, and then if that works out, we’ll look for a reasonable result on race day. I can’t imagine going to a race and not being competitive, but you have to realize that we’re racing against the best guys in the world here. I guess you have to curb your enthusiasm and live in reality.”(No Fear Racing PR)(4-24-2007)

NASCAR’s China initiative may be on the verge of bearing fruit. A four-person NASCAR group, including chairman Brian France, was scheduled to depart April 22 for a week-long visit to China to discuss possible projects with government, sports and business officials in Beijing, the country’s capital. NASCAR has no plans to race its Nextel Cup series in China. The trip is likely to involve discussions about lower-level NASCAR-type events or series at Chinese racetracks and business relationships that might include NASCAR and Chinese interests. It was not known if any contracts or agreements might be signed on the trip. Scheduled to make the trip, in addition to France, were NASCAR senior vice president Paul Brooks, NASCAR international managing director Robbie Weiss and Ken Clapp, a NASCAR consultant and formerly NASCAR’s West Coast director. NASCAR officials have been discussing possible involvement in China for more than a year. The Summer Olympics are scheduled in Beijing in August 2008, marking a major step forward on the international stage for the Chinese. NASCAR has had serious international aspirations for more than a decade. From 1996 to ’98, NASCAR ran three exhibition races in Japan, shipping its Cup cars across the Pacific to introduce the sport to the Far East. In 2005, the Busch Series raced for the first time at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez course in Mexico City. The series also raced there in 2006 and this season with generally mixed results. NASCAR also has launched an initiative north of the border. A Busch Series race is scheduled in Montreal at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve Aug. 4. (Scene Daily) (04-23-07)

Hooters Pro Cup Cars to Crowd CMP

Naturally Fresh 250 to test mettle of many
Myrtle Beach, S.C.-If Bristol Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway had an offspring, it would be Concord Motorsport Park. The half-mile track is lightning fast and features a dogleg down the backstretch that tests the mettle of many a driver. The key to winning the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Greased Lightning on Saturday, April 28 will be not to lift down the backstretch. Sounds easy enough. Well, that is until you try it.
“I just try to convince myself that I can get through there without lifting. You almost have to trick yourself into doing it,” said rookie Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 29 Chevy Racing Chevrolet. “Down the backstretch, it feels like a rollercoaster that is just waiting to be derailed.”
Last year, Shane Huffman derailed Clay Rogers’ hopes of winning at his home track on the last lap, bumping Rogers out of the lead in the final corner of the race to win the Greased Lightning 250. But without Huffman and Rogers in the field this time around, all eyes will be on Bobby Gill, seeing if he can keep up his dominance at CMP. Gill has three wins, four top-five finishes and six top-10s in eight starts at the track.
“Clay [Rogers] liked to call this place his home track, but I was racing here before they put the dogleg in,” said Gill, driver of the No. 06 USG Sheetrock Brand Ford.
