Today’s Top Story
Doug Taylor Pressing Forward At Specialty In Wake Of Matt Carter’s Departure

By Bryan Davis Keith
Driver Matt Carter left Specialty Racing’s No. 61 Ford team following Friday night’s race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in which he drove the car to the garage on his own accord, claiming repairs were needed in order to make it competitive. The driver gave his explanation of what happened to Scene Daily on Tuesday, while Frontstretch caught up with car owner Doug Taylor to get his take on a conflict that ended with both sides parting ways.

“Something was not right with the car,” Taylor admitted as he told us his version of events. “The race started off and in four laps he [Carter] wanted to come in under green and make some chassis adjustments. I wasn’t in total agreement, as there’s usually a caution early in the race. He came down pit road, and we started to make some changes and put fresh tires on it. The caution came out, so we wound up staying on the lead lap [Lucky Dog]. We ran about 30 laps, not quite a fuel run or a tire run, but he just called on the radio and said he was going to the garage to work on the race car.”

“I said, ‘Hold on Matt, we can’t do that, stay out there and race.’ If you want, pit and we’ll make adjustments to the car. I didn’t mind losing a lap or two to make adjustments. Obviously, we were the slowest car there. I know the tracks take awhile to get used to [and Carter’s a rookie in the series].”

“Anyhow, he just went on to the garage, and I asked him to please get back in the car, we needed the points. I know it’s very embarrassing, but we’ve got to just [keep going]. [Carl] Edwards finished 39th the other night, and I’m sure it was embarrassing to Carl, but he didn’t pull it in the garage. ”

Witnesses tell of a far more heated exchange, however, with Taylor and Carter getting in a loud argument before the driver stormed off and called it a night.

“He wouldn’t get back in the car,” was Taylor’s bottom line on the conflict. “So I said, ‘Well, I’m going to have to get somebody.’ We can’t afford to lose our position in points. We were perilously close to the No. 24 car passing us [for 28th in owner points], the position we were in while sitting in the garage.”

So Taylor went out and snatched up Chase Miller, who had just walked out of his start-and-park JTG Racing No. 47 car, to hop in his Ford. The team then limped home to a 29th place finish, 37 laps down, while eventually discovering the problem.

“I’m not pointing any fingers… we did find an issue with the right front lower control arm,” he said after Carter was bumped from the seat. “Chase [Miller] noticed it, but we couldn’t hear it, couldn’t pinpoint it with Matt.”

Now, the relationship between Carter and Taylor appears broken beyond repair. When asked further about the driver’s departure, Taylor noted it was not simply a matter of him deciding to leave, claiming he “didn’t hear from Matt all weekend.”

“My partner (co-owner Charlie Shoffner) told him [Matt] to give me a call,” he said. “But during the race, one of our crew texted Charlie that Matt had just pulled in the garage and I told him not to. Charlie told Matt from what he saw on TV, ‘it looks like you quit.’ Matt told Charlie he wasn’t quitting, that he didn’t want to quit, but Charlie told him ‘you need to take that up with Doug.’ You know, you park the car and get out of it, and refuse to get back in, it’s pretty much like you’re quitting.”

“And I hadn’t heard from Matt by Sunday evening, so…”

According to Taylor, hiring Carter also put a string on his budget, as attempts to buy better equipment for the rookie didn’t lead to better results. As a result, he feels the most prudent financial decision going forward is to start and park for the final four races while using them as glorified test sessions to improve.

“It just got more expensive to race with Matt for some reason,” he explained. “I can’t put my finger on anything…but we were purchasing things, buying stuff, and we slowed down. That puzzled me, and I lost faith at some point along the line. The last couple races, I thought, ‘Man, have I forgotten how to do this stuff, you know?’”

“So Kenny [Hendrick] is going to help us at Memphis,” he continued. “I just made the decision Sunday evening that unless we had funding, we were probably going to have to, I hate to use the term, possibly start and park for the rest of the year to lower our overheads, tires, crewmen, and whatnot. We’re secure in the points [top 30], so as long as we attempt to race every race we’ll be in good shape for Daytona.”

In the meantime, Taylor’s busy dissecting what went wrong. Truth be told, the No. 61 car has slowed drastically over the last month or so. And a lot of that boiled down to a communication breakdown between driver and crew chief.

“Matt’s a fine race car driver, a fine racer,” he said. “But our communication [wasn't there.] At Atlanta, we had a car that was ‘wobbly jobbly.’ And as I explained to Matt, I don’t understand how to fix ‘wobbly jobbly.’ But if I can get some concise idea of what the car is doing in more than a few words, even a paragraph, maybe then we can figure something out.”

“So it’s communication. Without pointing the finger at Matt, we just didn’t understand what each other was trying to say, and I don’t know if he had any faith in me, from the sound of the [Scene Daily] article he didn’t have much faith in my ability to fix the thing. We brought a lot of help around at different times to try and help Matt, and it didn’t seem to fix anything.”

“Since Dover, I don’t think we’d been to a track that Matt had ever seen. We’ve done the best we could, and obviously it wasn’t good enough for either one of us. Matt’s like me, he wants to win every race, and wants to take what we get and make it better. I think it was a conflict of personalities, and instead of bettering us it probably hurt us. I’m pretty calm about trying to fix things, and that bothered Matt. I try not to get excited in my attempt to get the car better, because it usually doesn’t work.”

But regardless of who’s to blame, Taylor knows he must put the incident behind him quickly with a car yet to score a top 10 finish in 65 starts since returning to the series full-time 2008.

“We’re going to test and use our time wisely,” he said. “I would have done it with Matt, but apparently he had previous conversations about his unwillingness to do that. At Charlotte, that’s not how I prefer to test. Once we’ve committed to racing with crewmen, which are an expense you can’t get out of once the green flag drops… I wouldn’t have bought a bunch of tires and had a full pit crew out there [if he was just going to pull it in the garage]. These guys are awesome, and they were upset…they were highly upset that Matt didn’t stop and let them work on the car, and try to adjust it.”

Now, as he looks towards the future, Taylor finds himself at a fork in the road. Though he was highly complimentary of the job Chase Miller did for the team at Lowe’s, the longtime Nationwide crew chief is now rethinking his team’s philosophy on drivers.

“Historically, we’ve taken our money and paid the tuition to get a rookie driver going, and I’m going to maybe rethink my strategy here and look for, get funding for a driver that has a fair bit of seat time and a record of being able to fix the race car, help the team get the car better,” he said. “I do want to find somebody of David Green quality, that has a history of getting the cars to go as fast as they’ll go and give some concise input on what the car is doing. It’s a very, very daunting task to take a rookie, knowing that your equipment isn’t the best piece out there, and have him figure out what’s wrong with it. We need a driver in our ranks that can say this is how a car should feel at Charlotte, this is how a car should feel at California, because those tracks take laps to get used to.”

Waltrip Involved In Minor Traffic Accident
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver/team co-owner Michael Waltrip was cited for failure to yield after a traffic accident Wednesday night that left a motorcyclist being treated for apparently minor injuries at a hospital, according to a police report. The accident occurred on Perth Road in Mooresville, N.C., as Waltrip made a right turn onto the four-lane road and then attempted a quick U-turn once he got by a concrete median. According to the police report, the motorcyclist ran into Waltrip’s Lexus when Waltrip attempted to cross over the far left lane of traffic while attempting to make his U-turn. It was estimated that Waltrip was going about 5 mph, while the motorcyclist was going 20 mph. Waltrip passed all field sobriety tests and had a blood alcohol level of .06 – under the legal limit of .08, according to the police report. The motorcyclist stated at the hospital while being treated that he had drank two beers earlier, according to the police report. The report said the motorcyclist had visible bruises and/or swelling but no sign of broken bones nor significant blood loss. …

US F1 Would Like To Have Kyle Busch
US F1 sporting director Peter Windsor is so enamored with Kyle Busch, he keeps very informed on what the Sprint Cup driver is doing “on a daily basis almost.” — Windsor would like to eliminate “almost” in 2011. — “If he wanted to drive for us in 2011, we’d certainly be keen on that,” Windsor says. “I think there’ll be a lot of speculation about that as time goes on. If I was Kyle, I’d be saying to myself, yeah, those guys all talk the talk, let’s see what they do, let’s see what the car’s like. Let’s see what the race shop is like. Fair enough. We’re going to do a good job. I know when Kyle gets to see it, I’m pretty sure it’ll get his pulse rate going.” — Busch already has shown some interest. Windsor says he met with the driver’s business team after being approached about the team.

Drive for Diversity Finalist
Paul Harraka, the first Drive for Diversity driver to win a race in a NASCAR regional touring division, was one of 10 finalists to emerge Tuesday from two days of tryouts for the 2010 class. The overhauled diversity program, now in its sixth season, brought 30 candidates to Motor Mile Speedway to compete for 10 spots. Four drivers will eventually earn rides in the Camping World East Series, while the other six will be placed with Whelen All-American teams. Program operations have been transferred for next year’s class to the 909 Group, a sports marketing agency run by Max Siegel, who spent two seasons running Dale Earnhardt Inc.

Almirola files papers against EGR: Aric Almirola has filed paperwork in North Carolina Superior Court indicating that he has a breach-of-contract dispute with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. Almirola, who competed in seven Sprint Cup races this year for the team before his [#8 Chevy] car was parked because of a lack of sponsorship, filed the notice in the Charlotte court last Friday [10-16], asking for 20 days to file a complaint in the matter. This type of request results in a summons to the other party and typically is filed to start a civil action but the person hopes the matter gets settled before having to file the lawsuit specifics. Almirola indicates that the nature of his claim is breach of contract and unfair and deceptive trade practices. Almirola filed two notices, one against EGR and DEI and another against Chip Ganassi Racing and team co-owner Teresa Earnhardt. Almirola had a contract with DEI, which merged its Cup operation with Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of the 2008 season to form Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. He has until Nov. 5 to file an actual complaint. “We’re disappointed at the situation with Aric but are hopeful that we will come to an agreement soon,” EGR spokesman John Olguin said. Almirola has 26 career Sprint Cup starts, with a career best finish of eighth at Bristol in March 2008. He drove in 17 races in 2007 and 2008 as he shared the ride with Mark Martin in the #8 Chevy at DEI.(SceneDaily)(10-22-2009)

Michael Waltrip involved in accident, is OK: #55-Michael Waltrip crashed into a motorcycle Wednesday night while trying to make a U-Turn and was given a field sobriety test by a Mooresville police officer, a report states. Waltrip was attempting a U-turn on Perth Road around 7:49 p.m. when his Lexus collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The motorcyclist was transported to Lake Norman Regional Center. Waltrip was given a Breathalyzer and blew a .06, under the North Carolina legal limit of .08, the report states. Waltrip was cited for failure to yield. He was not injured in the accident. MORE Mooresville police say alcohol was a factor in an accident Wednesday night involving NASCAR driver and team owner Michael Waltrip. Officers investigating the accident suspected Waltrip was drinking, but when he was given a field sobriety test, he registered a .06. In North Carolina the legal limit is .08. Police say Waltrip was leaving the parking lot of a shopping center and when he pulled out, he attempted to do a U-turn around a cement median. Waltrip pulled out just an as on-coming motorcyclist was approaching. The motorcyclist, identified by police as Ronald Hausman of Mooresville, slammed into the driver’s side door or Waltrip’s Lexus. The police report on the accident says Waltrip “was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.” He was given a field sobriety test and passed a “walk and turn” test and a “one leg stand” test. “He did not meet the criteria for the DWI, however it was indicated as a contributing factor&on the accident report,” said Captain Phil Blocker of the Mooresville Police. Waltrip was given a citation for failing to yield the right of way. Waltrip lives in a gated estate in Sherrills Ford. His home is secluded from the road. Stavola back in NASCAR? MORE: Friday’s Sports Business Daily is reporting - Semi-retired driver Terry Labonte and former team owner Bill Stavola are both getting back into NASCAR full-time as co-owners of a new race organization. StavolaLabonte Racing will field cars in the Sprint Cup Series, possibly next year, with Labonte driving initially.(Sports Business Daily, need subscription)(10-9-2009)
MORE: Former NASCAR Sprint Cup champion [1984, 1996] Terry Labonte, who is preparing to run his fifth race of the season this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, hopes to compete in as many as eight to 10 events in 2010. Labonte as back this weekend in the #08 Carter/Simo Toyota, which is running a partial schedule this year. Labonte finished 24th in the Daytona 500 for Prism Motorsports and has run three races this year for Carter/Simo Racing. “If I end up running some more races next year, I felt like there are some tracks I haven’t been to in years, and I don’t have as much experience in these cars,” said the 52-year-old Labonte. “If I run eight, 10 races next year, I need to get as many laps as I can. I’ve got to learn as much as I can about these cars.” Labonte said he and former car owner Billy Stavola have tossed around the idea about starting a team. “He’s a good guy and was in the sport for a long time and had a good reputation,” Labonte said. “He would be a good guy to be associated with. We’re kind of kicking around the idea. On the one hand, it’s the perfect time to get in because you would be able to hire people today that you would not have had a chance two years ago. On the other side of the coin, I’ve never seen it so hard on the sponsorship side.” As far as running a full season, Labonte said he doesn’t think he has it in him. As far as the remainder of this year goes, Labonte said if the team has a good run in the NASCAR Banking 500 this weekend, he might run the car again later this year.(SceneDaily)(10-22-2009)

The crew voted last week to donate a majority of the prize money it earned through the Tissot awards and pit stop competition to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Victory Junction. #44 Jackman Ed Watkins: “You rock and roll every Sunday supporting the race team and AJ in giving him fast pit stops. But this gives us an opportunity to support the community. We wanted to do something in the fight against breast cancer. We also wanted to find a way we could give underprivileged children a chance to attend the victory junction camp and experience the great campus the Petty’s have up there.” Allmendinger’s #44 Dodge will carry a Coleman Natural Food paint scheme this weekend at Martinsville Speedway in Allmendinger’s 76th career start.(RPM)(10-22-2009)

Jeff Gordon Foundation pledges $2.5 million: The Jeff Gordon Foundation commemorated A Decade of Caring — it’s 10th anniversary — with friends and supporters at VanLandingham Estate on Oct. 14th where Gordon announced his Foundation will be donating and pledging $2.5 million this year. The Foundation’s funding will support several initiatives including the development of the Pediatric Pulmonary Lab and Community Outreach Program at the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital, the establishment of the Jeff Gordon Pediatric Cancer Research Fund at Riley Hospital for Children and the funding of the Phase I Long-Term Follow-Up Program focused on the effects of treatment on the health and quality of life of cancer patients. “Looking back at the past 10 years it’s amazing to see the tremendous growth of the Foundation and the number of children that we have been able to help,” Gordon said. “I am also pleased that we are able to provide such a large commitment this year even in these difficult economic times.” Since its inception in 1999, The Jeff Gordon Foundation has awarded nearly $10 million to the country’s top childhood health organizations. To assist the Foundation this year a campaign called TEN Match was created to gather support and to celebrate the Foundation’s 10-year anniversary. For every donation of $10 or more, Gordon will personally match the contribution. Through generous donors, great strides in the support of pediatric cancer research and treatment and the Jeff Gordon Children’s Hospital continue to be made.(JGF)(10-22-2009)

Ambrose heading back to Tasmania in off season: Like many drivers, #47-Marcos Ambrose spends days or weeks at a time away from home, working away from the track. As the season winds down, the Aussie knows a trip to the homeland is just what he needs to recharge from the hustle and bustle. Following the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Ambrose will go to Tasmania for two months. “The idea of going back to Australia is for my kids to see family and friends,” Ambrose said. “For me, I will also use the time to get my body in shape and get my head back in the game. I will think about what I need during the year and how I am going to be better. It’s all about reinvigorating myself and doing a good soul search about who I am, what I am all about and what I need to do to be better.”(MWR)(10-22-2009)

Sealed Engine Violation on the NNS No. 16

On Wednesday, NASCAR announced that the No. 16 team in the Nationwide Series had violated the engine sealing rules. As a result, car owner Jack Roush has been docked 100 owner points and driver Matt Kenseth has been docked 100 driver points. In addition, crew chief Eddie Pardue has been fined $30,000.

NASCAR judged that the engine out of the No. 16 violated multiple sections of the Nationwide Series Rulebook. The release specifies that the engine violated Section 12-1 (the blanket “Actions Detrimental to Stock Car Racing”), Section 12-4-J (Race equipment that has been previously sealed by NASCAR), and subsection 8-6 (Failure to submit the sealed engine from the race winner for inspection; removal of the seal without authorization from NASCAR).

SceneDaily.com reports that the penalty appears to be the result of a clerical error. In addition, NASCAR has known about this accidental engine teardown for the past couple of weeks. The engine referred to in the NASCAR press release was the engine that Matt Kenseth won the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 with at Darlington Raceway, one that was then sealed and used again at Nashville in June. At that point, the engine was sealed again for use in one more race.

Roush Fenway Engines self-reported the violation after employees at the engine shop cut the seals and tore down the engine back at the shop. The engine was never actually torn down for inspection by NASCAR officials, however, and they consider this to be a serious issue — despite the fact that it was a complete accident.

“It’s very serious,” NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said on Wednesday. “It’s the intergity of our sealed-engine program, which has been put in place to try to aid the teams in cost control and budgets of things of that nature.”

The 100-point hit in owner points drops the No. 16 one place to 10th behind the Braun Racing No. 38.

Memphis Last Stop In 2009 ‘Dash 4 Cash’ Program: There is an excellent chance the winner of Saturday’s Kroger On Track For The Cure 250 will come home with an additional $25,000 on top of his share of the prize money. The last of four races for the popular ‘Dash 4 Cash’ program will take place at Memphis, and competitors will fight to take its bonus for the second time this season. Saturday’s race marks the final NASCAR Nationwide Series stand-alone race of 2009. A $25,000 bonus has been up for grabs for the winner of one of four stand-alone NASCAR Nationwide Series races this season, granted the winner is a full-time or part-time series-only regular or a full-time double-duty driver. The bonus rolled over to the following race since the winner was not a series-only regular. In July at Iowa, Brad Keselowski (#88 Delphi Chevy) became the first driver to take home the bonus, which had ballooned to $75,000 after races at Nashville Superspeedway and Kentucky Speedway were won by Joey Loga#He’s not entered at Memphis. Still, there are several drivers who could throw a wrench into the plans this last time around. Matt Kenseth (#16 CitiFinancial Ford) is making his first start at Memphis since the inaugural series race at the track in 1999, when he finished 21st, while David Reutimann (#99 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota) won his first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Memphis in 2007. In that victory, Reutimann scored a perfect Driver Rating of 150.0. He finished second last season at Memphis.(NASCAR PR)(10-20-2009)

Campe out; Eury Jr. in at JR Motorsports: JR Motorsports announced it has mutually agreed to release Brian Campe from his contractual duties as crew chief of the #5 team in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, effective immediately. Tony Eury Jr. will serve as the team’s crew chief this weekend in the Kroger “On Track For The Cure” 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park.(JR Motorsports PR)(10-22-2009)

Wimmer goes pink at Memphis: In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Scott Wimmer will drive a pink themed #40 Stoprepairbills.com Chevy at the Kroger On The Track For The Cure 250. Wimmer takes special interest in his paint scheme and the message it spreads throughout the NASCAR community. Breast cancer awareness is a cause near and dear to his heart as Scott’s mother and sister have both battled breast cancer.(Wimmer PR), see an image of the car on the #40 team paint scheme page.(10-22-2009)
www.jayski.com/schemes/2009/nationwide/40nationwide.htm

Construct Corps on the #10 at Memphis: Construct Corps is an international construction staffing and recruiting company that specializes in providing quality skilled workers and construction management personnel to commercial, industrial and residential contractors. They will be the primary sponsor of #10-Justin Marks at Memphis.(Braun Racing PR)(10-22-2009)

#16 team fined for engine violation: UPDATE: NASCAR announced that the crew chief, owner and driver of the #16 NASCAR Nationwide Series team have been fined and penalized for violations involving sealed engine rules. Crew chief Eddie Pardue has been fined $30,000 for violating Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-J (Race equipment that has been previously sealed by NASCAR for use in an event) and sub-section 8-6 (Failure to submit the sealed engine from the race winner for inspection; removal of the seal from the winning engine without authorization from NASCAR) of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series rule book. Team owner Jack Roush was penalized with the loss of 100 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship owner points while driver Matt Kenseth also was docked 100 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship driver points.(NASCAR PR)(10-21-2009)
UPDATE: Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said the engine at issue was from the race-winning car in May at Darlington. The engine was sealed after the victory and then used again at Nashville in June and was sealed again for use at one more race. The team (or Roush Yates Engines) then took apart the engine because of a clerical error, cut the seals and took the engine apart, and once it was realized that a mistake was made, Roush Fenway contacted NASCAR officials, Balash said. The race-winning engine was never torn down by NASCAR officials, Balash said, resulting in the penalty.(SceneDaily)(10-21-2009)

Kittleson leaves #31 team: Travis Kittleson announced that he has parted ways with Rick Ware Racing effective immediately. The Merritt Island, Florida native competed in five races in the #31 Chevry of RWR this season with disappointing results. “This has been a very frustrating year in many aspects for me,” said Kittleson. “I really marked this season as an important one for my career and I was looking for an opportunity to go out there and really make a statement. Needless to say that did not happen and I have put myself in this situation.” Kittleson, the 2003 ASA Rookie of the Year, also announces that his longtime sponsor of 10 years Bob Steele Chevrolet will not be returning next season.(Integrity Sports Marketing/Kittleson PR)(10-21-2009)

Goodyear Tire Notes - Martinsville: Teams in both of these NASCAR series will run the same tire codes at Martinsville this weekend, though the Sprint Cup tires will be branded “Goodyear Eagle,” while the Camping World Truck tires will be branded “Goodyear Wrangler” . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tire codes that teams in these two series ran at Martinsville this past March . . . this left-side tire code (D-4108) has been run at this track since last season, while this is the first year for this right-side tire code (D-4230) . . . while this left-side is unique to Martinsville, this right-side was also run on all four tire positions at the Sprint Cup race at Infineon Raceway earlier this season . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Martinsville.(Goodyear PR)

Chrissy Wallace regarding prospects for 2010: “As of right now I’ve been guaranteed to run two truck races this year for Rick Ware Racing. We might run a third race. But the big thing is just sponsorship. Rick Ware’s team is looking for sponsorship, I’m looking for sponsorship, and the big thing is anybody could come on board with us and have multitudes of different teams so their name was on the car. So we’ve just got to go out there and find a sponsorship, and once I’m able to do that, then I will be running full time.”(NASCAR PR)(10-22-2009)

Fuller & TRG Motorsports team up for Martinsville: R3 Motorsports and TRG Motorsports are teaming up to run the Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway this weekend. Rob Fuller, co-owner of R3 Motorsports, will be behind the wheel of the #71 Mahindra Tractors Chevrolet with Tim Rice calling the shots as Crew Chief. Fuller will be making his first NCWTS start at Martinsville Speedway on Friday. He has two previous starts at the half-mile oval, one in a modified and one in a late model. Rob Fuller on Teaming Up With TRG Motorsports: “I am really excited every time I race at Martinsville Speedway. I really wanted to race the truck here but the R3 Nationwide teams are competing in Memphis. TRG stepped up to help out and give me the opportunity for a solid run at Martinsville this weekend. I can’t thank them enough for that.”(WhoWon.com)(10-22-2009)

Myers in the #07 at Martinsville: UPDATE series debut: Hearing a deal was put together recently with Bobby Dotter at SS Green Light Racing for Burt Myers to drive the # 07 Chevy Truck at Martinsville Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on October 24, 2009.(10-19-2009)
UPDATE: When the NASCAR Camping World Trucks take to the Martinsville Speedway on Saturday afternoon the two SS Green Light Racing entries will have a “modified look” as Burt Myers and Tim Brown take the wheel of the teams #07 and #08 Chevy Silverados. Both drivers will be making their NCWTS debut this weekend. The Myers name should be familiar to NASCAR fans as Burt will be the third generation of Myers to run in one of NASCAR’s top three touring series. The Myers Brothers Award is given annually by the National Motorsports Press Association and recognizes individuals or groups who have provided outstanding contributions to the sport of stock car racing. The award is named after two of NASCAR stock car racing’s pioneers, the late brothers Billy and Bobby Myers. (Burt’s grandfather and great uncle.) Burt’s father Gary Myers had 46 starts in the Grand National (now Sprint Cup) series from 1972 to 1978. Myers, a native of Walnut Cove, NC has 76 career feature victories and seven championships since getting behind the wheel in 1995 will pilot the #07 with support from The Wyatt Winstead Foundation, Capital Bank of Raleigh, NC, Dynamic Downhole Services and JRC Investments has goals of joining the series full time.(SS Green Light Racing PR)(10-22-2009)

White to make series debut at Martinsville: Derek White, a Native American (Mohawk) that hails from Kahnawake, an Indian reserve near Montreal, Quebec, will make his first series start in the #12 DGM Racing Chevy at Martinsville. White has prior experience in various forms of motorsports including: 22 yrs ice racing (cars), 20 yrs drag racing (Pro-Stocks–7 second quarter mile cars), motocross, etc. In the past year he began competing in Canada by participating in events with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the A.C.T. Series. He owns and operates O.C.R. Gaz Bar which is a full service gas-convenience store in his region. That is the primary sponsor for him this weekend at Martinsville. O.C.R. Gaz Bar was also the primary sponsor for Mario Gosselin at the Iowa event earlier this year.(DGM Racing PR)(10-21-2009)

HT Motorsports looking for that first win at home track: Martinsville-based HT Motorsports has proven it’s competitive. Throughout this season, the team’s veteran drivers, David Starr (#24 Zachry Toyota) and Terry Cook (#25 Harris Trucking/Cajun Industries Toyota), have been in and out of the top 10 not only at the end of races, but in the standings as well. Competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series since 2001, the team is still looking for that first win. As a former winner at Martinsville, Starr thinks he can be the one to deliver that victory for owner Jim Harris and his team. “We go into this race just like we would the rest of the year. We are going for the win. At this point for us we don’t have anything to lose championship-wise, so we don’t have to watch our points; we can just go for it,” said Starr. “The only difference in Martinsville for us to win there is the hometown correlation between Jim (Harris) and our team calling this track our home base. It would just be really great to get Jim his first win there.” In addition to his 2006 win, Starr has two top-five and four top-10 finishes. He is currently 10th in the standings. Cook has two top-five and five top-10 finishes at the .526-mile track and has led 190 laps. He sits 13th in the standings, 107 points of his teammate.(NASCAR PR)

This weekend’s trip to Martinsville Speedway will be a little different for crew chief Chad Kendrick. In March, Kendrick and his driver, Timothy Peters (No. 17 Strutmasters/Red Horse Racing Toyota), were with Danville-based Premier Racing. Working with fewer resources, they were doing a lot with a little, sitting in the top 10 in points three races into the season.

In 2004, Ryan Hemphill took the ARCA RE/MAX Series by storm. In just 14 starts as a development driver for Ganassi Racing, the rookie roared into town earning six wins in only 14 starts. That means he won an astonishing 43% of all the races he entered, the same percentage (wins to starts) that rookie Parker Kligerman put up in 2009.
