All you JJ fans must be pretty smug about now, with visions of ‘4 peat’ dancing through your head. There’s no question that the JJ/dasKnaus/Hendrick combo is a fantastic pairing, and is privately causing Gordo a huge amount of heartburn. Read more at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/4164

Johnson Takes Win At Lowe’s, Expands Points Lead
Perfection (n.): An unsurpassable degree of accuracy or excellence.
Saturday night, no other word could better describe the No. 48.
Completing a weekend of dominance at Lowe’s, Johnson led 92 of 334 laps in taking the checkered flag for the first time in four years at the 1.5-miler. Surviving some late-race restarts with teammate Jeff Gordon, Johnson was able to use clean air to pull away to a victory that gives him a comfortable 90-point lead in his bid for a fourth straight championship. But just like last week at California, the fight was fast and furious up front, with Gordon taking his best shot after a two tire stop left him second just prior to the race’s final caution with 20 to go.
“That last restart, I had my hands full,” Johnson said of a tense few minutes, where both cars ran side-by-side before Gordon squeaked out to the lead with sixteen laps left. “I was loose on the inside of him. I had a couple of moments… I had to fall behind him, collect my thoughts, and try to find another way by.”
“Once I cleared him, I knew we’d be in good shape. But if he could have held on three or four more laps in front of me, I could have gotten too tight and not been able to get by. So I wasn’t desperate to get by him, but I was doing all I could.”
Johnson’s moves eventually paid off, as Gordon slipped into dirty air and faded to fourth. That left no challengers as the No. 48 cruised to a 2.3 second victory over Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne.
“I don’t think there’s much that team hasn’t done,” Kenseth said after acknowledging the winner’s “perfect” weekend: first in all practices, qualifying, and then the race itself. “Since them two got together, they’ve been, in my opinion, the group to beat every single year.”
Kahne had the only car capable of running with Johnson through the race’s midpoint, building up a seven-second lead at one time over the entire field. But when a caution came for Max Papis’ blown engine with 43 laps remaining, the No. 9 team lost a battle on pit road by inches to the No. 48. That left them on the outside groove, with Johnson in control of the restart and Kahne simply left in the dust once the green flag dropped.
“I always have a problem when I start off the front row,” he said in frustration. “This whole year, with restarts, I just spin my tires. I try not to give it throttle and don’t spin my tires, and I get pushed from behind.”
Gordon and rookie Joey Logano rounded out the top 5, an impressive comeback for the rookie after missing his pit early in the race. Clint Bowyer, Casey Mears, Kyle Busch (recovering from an early spin), Martin Truex, Jr., and Kurt Busch rounded out the top 10.
It was a tough night for some of the Chasers, in particular Johnson’s two biggest rivals for the championship: Mark Martin and Juan Pablo Montoya. Both were caught up in the same incident on a Lap 125 restart, when Clint Bowyer’s car was slow to get going, causing a chain reaction where Montoya slammed into his right rear. Martin came in right behind, leaving both cars a handling nightmare the rest of the race.
“They all kind of went and then they checked up and I checked up and I don’t know, somebody didn’t slow down and just ripped the whole rear of the car,” said Montoya, who finished 35th, fell to sixth in points and saw his title hopes all but go up in smoke. “Then I got hit into the car in front of us. Just one of those deals.”
Martin made out the better of the two, but was only able to scrape together a 14th-place effort, on the lead lap to fall 90 behind in second place.
“On green flag runs, we got super tight,” he said. “But we had a lot of issues tonight, could have given up but none of them did.”
Other Chasers that had problems included Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin (engine failure) along with Brian Vickers (handling). Just four Chasers finished in the top 10, by far the lowest total in the five playoff races this season.

Johnson Wins Again
Jimmie Johnson continues to rewrite the NASCAR Sprint Cup record books. Over the race weekend, Johnson led all three practice sessions, posted the fastest lap in qualifying this year at any track and simply started the Banking 500 and then went out a ran away with the victory. It was Johnson’s sixth win this year, and the 46th victory of his 286 race career. Johnson led five times for a total race high 92 laps. The only concern on Johnson’s part was on a restart with 15 laps to go. Jeff Gordon got a good start on the outside of Johnson and actually took the lead but Johnson fought back on the inside. Johnson repassed Gordon with eleven laps remaining and never looked back.
“He (Gordon) was real quick, but when he was mired in traffic he didn’t have the speed that he needed,” said Johnson. “So in my opinion I needed to suck it up and get all that I could those first two or three laps to get out in front of him, and once I did that he didn’t have the benefit of clean air and it hurt his car and he started slipping back. But that last restart I had my hands full. I was loose on the inside of him. I had a couple moments, I had to fall in behind him, collect my thoughts and try to find another way by him. Once I cleared him, I knew we’d be in good shape, but if he could have held on three or four more laps in front of me, I could have then got too tight and not been able to get by. Not that I was able to desperate to get by him, but I was doing all that I could.” — Johnson extended his lead in the Chase standings to 90 points over second place Mark Martin and 135 over Jeff Gordon with five races remaining in the 2009 season.
Matt Kenseth finished second, Kasey Kahne was third and Jeff Gordon nailed down the fourth spot. Ater a mistake in the pits and falling deep in the field, rookie Joey Logano fought back to fifth place followed by Clint Bowyer, Casey Mears, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch to round out the top-ten. — The Sprint Cup Series moves to Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville, Virginia, next Sunday, October 25th, for the TUMS QuikPak 500, the sixth race in the Chase for the Championship. The race will also be broadcast live on MRN Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

RCR Making Changes
Team owner Richard Childress has never shied away from shaking things up when he deemed changes necessary to make his organization better. It appears that more changes are on the way. Childress, speaking on Saturday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, addressed the struggles of Richard Childress Racing and the possible departure of Kevin Harvick when the driver’s contract expires at the end of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Harvick, along with RCR’s other three Cup drivers, failed to make NASCAR’s Chase For The Sprint Cup this season and Harvick is mired in the midst of the longest winless streak of his career. RCR, which expanded to four teams this season, placed all three of its cars in the Chase in 2007 and 2008 but none this season. The organization is also still searching for its first Cup victory of 2009. “All I’ve got to say is we are making a lot of changes,” said Childress, who won the last of his six Cup championships with the late Dale Earnhardt in 1994. “We’ll probably be announcing more changes next week coming. We’re using these last races to get prepared for 2010. We know we have to be better. We’ve seen some improvements. I think if you look, we’ve been up front with the different [RCR] cars in the last few weeks. This [new] car is very touchy and right now Hendrick [Motorsports] is right up on top of it. They’ve got it figured out for the most part

Hendrick leans toward keeping McGrew: Rick Hendrick is committed to Lance McGrew remaining #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s crew chief for the rest of the Sprint Cup season and appears to be leaning toward keeping them together in 2010. “My philosophy has always been if you can fix something rather than start all over then I’d whole lot rather fix it,” the owner of Hendrick Motorsports said before Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “When I see the car as the best car out there in my group for two or three of the races and then just have crappy luck, it’s almost like, ‘Hey, let’s focus on the little things that can make it better.’ ” Hendrick’s comments came 24 hours after Earnhardt expressed frustration with how his season has gone since switching from long-time crew chief Tony Eury Jr. to McGrew in June. Hendrick said he is encouraged with the performance of the team, noting again bad luck has contributed to six straight finishes of 17th or worse that has Earnhardt buried at 22nd in points. Hendrick said Earnhardt’s struggles have made it tough for him to enjoy the success of his other three drivers. Jimmie Johnson entered Saturday’s race first in points, followed by Mark Martin in second and Jeff Gordon in fifth. Hendrick said he has no timetable for when he will make a decision on Earnhardt’s crew chief for next season. He wasn’t quite sure what his driver meant when he said he needed a “dictator” like he had when Tony Eury Sr. was his crew chief in the Nationwide Series and early in the Cup series. But Hendrick didn’t sound like a man that was ready to make a major change. “All I can look for in a team is we’re getting better rather than backing up, and we’re getting better,” he said. “This is a hard deal. Sometimes, when you start to doing good and then you have a problem, it’s worse than when you’re steady Eddie. We haven’t made any decisions other than we’re going to try to do the best we can.”(ESPN.com)(10-18-2009)
Did Not Finish Streak and stats: #14-Tony Stewart has the longest current streak of finishing races at 54 races of drivers who have ran all the races. The next driver with the most is: #39-Ryan Newman & #00-David Reutimann with 37 straight races without a DNF.
Five drivers have run all the 2009 races and not had a DNF: #14-Stewart, #39-Newman, #42-Montoya, #00-Reutimann and #07-Mears
The all-time record for the longest streak of NOT having an DNF is 84 races held by Herman Beam from April 30, 1961 thru March 10, 1963 [Beam didn't run all the races, but did not have a DNF in 84 straight consecutive races that he ran].
Clint Bowyer holds the modern day (1972-present) at 83, next is Kevin Harvick at 81 [also had a 2nd streak of 58], then Jeff Gordon at 56 and Dale Earnhardt at 53.
The Most in 2009: #66-Blaney has the most DNF’s in 2009 with 25 [in 27 starts], followed by #87-Nemechek who has 23 [in 26 starts]. Both of these teams are start-and-parkers for most races. The most DNF’s among drivers who have run all the races in 2009: #96/#71-BLabonte with 6.(10-17-2009)

Landon Cassill to drive at Memphis: UPDATE: 2008 ROTY winner Landon Cassill will be piloting the Phoenix Racing Team #1 Miccosukee Resort Gaming Chevy, owned by James Finch in the “Kroger on Track for the Cure 250″ at Memphis Motorsports Park.(LandonCassill.com)(10-7-2009)
UPDATE: It’s been 11 months since his last appearance in a NASCAR series, but Landon Cassill will finally start to put a frustrating season behind him next week when he returns to the Nationwide Series at Memphis. Cassill will drive Phoenix Racing’s #1 car at Memphis, marking the first start for the defending Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year since the Phoenix race last November. So will he race full-time next year, perhaps with Phoenix? Cassill said he was “working on things” but offered no details. “It’s just a unique time with the economy,” he said. “Nobody’s out there to hold me back from any opportunity. I know [Hendrick is] working on creating some opportunities within. Hopefully some things will come up.” Phoenix Racing owner James Finch uses Hendrick engines, has a relationship with Hendrick and needed a driver for Memphis, which is how Cassill’s chance to drive came about.(SceneDaily)(10-16-2009)

Ryan Newman returned to the wheel of the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Hungry-Man Chevrolet for 200 laps of action under the lights at Lowe’s (N.C.) Motor Speedway on Friday night. Starting the Dollar General 300 from the 15th position, Newman ran most of the night solidly in the top 15 before crossing the finish line in the seventh position. The finish marked Newman’s third top-10 finish in four NASCAR Nationwide Series starts this season for KHI.“I have to thank these guys for giving me the opportunity to drive this car,” said Newman following the race. “We struggled a little in practice, but the guys made adjustments and gave me a good car for the race. This is one of my favorite tracks and it was a lot of fun.”(KHI) (10-18-09)
Nick Joanides is ready for the next step. The California native has had an historic 2009 year thus far, claiming the NASCAR AC Delco Super Late Model Championship, the NASCAR AC Delco Late Model Championship, the NASCAR California State Championship, the Lucas Oil Slick Mist Championship and second runner-up honors in the NASCAR National Championship points.Joanides will make his debut at the Memphis Motorsports Park on October 24th in the #31 Rick Ware Racing entry
Post-race quotes from Racewinner, Kyle Busch- It’s awesome to come out here on such a cold night and have this many people in the stands so I appreciate their support. There wasn’t much that was going to stop this Z-Line Camry tonight. It was really, really good. Just a phenomenal race car, it was a great job by this whole team. We worked on it in practice trying to make it better. We quit early because I got it where I wanted it .” Are you thinking about the championship yet? “There’s still a few to go. Carl’s (Edwards) best track comes up next week. He’s won the last two or three there. It’s not over, it’s definitely any man’s race right now as far as Carl (Edwards) or myself or even the 88 (Brad Keselowski). Unfortunately, there last week, I have to apologize to my fans and all these guys – I had to step out. I didn’t feel good and unfortunately Denny (Hamlin) got caught up in a mess I don’t know if any of us could have gotten out of. He did a great job driving for us. He could have won the race and almost won the race for us, but unfortunately we lost some points. .” How sick were you last weekend? “The sickness I had started on Sunday after Kansas and it felt like a cold was coming on and then I got a really, really bad fever and got cold chills and everything. Then it started to subside about Thursday or Friday and then Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night I had chills again and a fever. I went to the doctor on Monday, which was pneumonia so I went from the flu to pneumonia and now I’m just getting over the final cases of pneumonia with some antibiotics and stuff like that.
