Johnson Captures LMS Pole
by Amy Henderson
Jimmie Johnson captured the pole at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with a blistering lap of 28.079 seconds (192.376 miles per hour) on a cold and damp Thursday night, setting the fastest time ever for the new car at LMS, and the third fastest pole speed ever at the track. Johnson bested the spring pole speed by a fraction under four miles per hour. It is Johnson’s third pole of the year and the 22nd of his career.
“The old track really suited my style,” says Johnson, who has five wins at LMS but none since 2005. “When tracks are repaved, it brings the field together. In the last couple of years we’ve lost our advantage, and we’d like to get it back. The more I can have cool things happen and win races, the more I become aware of my place in the sport.”
Mark Martin was second with a lap of 28.152 seconds, making a sweep of the front row for Hendrick Motorsports. Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five. Among the Chase contenders, Ryan Newman and Jeff Gordon also had top ten efforts while Carl Edwards and Brian Vickers have their work cut out for them on Sunday after qualifying 28th and 30th respectively. Mike Bliss had the fastest lap of the drivers needing to qualify on speed with a 28.360 second run, good for seventh on the grid.
Johnson has five wins in 16 races at LMS. He currently leads the points, but his team has a slight unknown quantity-a new rear tire changer after regular Jeremy West injured his back at Bristol. “We’re certainly concerned about it,” Johnson admits. “Team chemistry is an important part of what we do week in and week out…we’ve worked hard on those positions and the guys have been so good to us over the years. It’s unfortunate that Jeremy had a back issue.” Johnson’s pit crew has had a few bobbles in the last few weeks; however, Johnson won last week at Fontana despite a small miscue in the pits, and says that the team is confident that they can contend for a sixth LMS win on Saturday night.
PRACTICE NEWS AND NOTES
Johnson Paces First Cup Practice
Jimmie Johnson picked up where he left off Thursday, dominating the first Cup practice as his bid for four straight titles continues to pick up steam.
Pacing a session delayed nearly four hours by rain, Johnson’s time of 28.054 seconds beat teammate Mark Martin by nearly two-tenths of a second. The top two in points put up the first and second-fastest speeds, respectively, with Clint Bowyer, Greg Biffle, and Tony Stewart rounding out the top 5.
Among the surprises further back in the field was Mike Bliss, seventh-fastest in the TRG Motorsports Chevrolet expected to go the distance Saturday night. Freshmen Brad Keselowski (12th) and Joey Logano (14th) also impressed, with a pneumonia-stricken Kyle Busch hanging tough in 16th.
Juan Pablo Montoya, third in points, led the list of Chasers who struggled, posting just the 15th fastest speed. Denny Hamlin (19th), Kurt Busch (20th), Carl Edwards (36th), and Brian Vickers (38th) were also well off the pace.
The biggest surprise were the speeds themselves, with the top 11 cars breaking the 190 MPH barrier as a preview of what would be the fastest ever qualifying times turned in by the new car at this track.
Track Talk: On-Site Notes From Your Frontstretch Experts
Edwards Expecting First Child
Carl Edwards made it official Thursday, confirming rumors wife Kate is pregnant with their first child, a girl.
“We went in there for the ultrasound, the first one, and I had seen all the pictures of what the baby was supposed to look like,” he said. “And we were sitting there and all of a sudden she started moving and I almost passed out. It was wild.”
The baby is due in mid-February, causing Carl to joke they’ll name her Daytona “depending on how [the race] goes.”
Logano, Biffle Feud Continues
One week after Joey Logano and Greg Biffle traded paint on the race track, the feud between the two drivers continues. Biffle held court in an extensive media center press conference this afternoon, making it clear there’s still bad blood that dates all the way back to Kansas the end of last month, when the two made contact and crumpled Biffle’s front fender in a Nationwide race.
“I talked to Joey after that race and I said, ‘What’s the most disappointing for me is to race a young guy like yourself that has a lot of talent and ability, and something like that goes on on the race track and you don’t come over and say anything to a guy,” he explained. “[Something like] ‘Hey, sorry I messed your race up, sorry I ran into you, didn’t think we would get together, thought we had more room’ – something like that.”
“I said, I think you need to pay a little more respect to the veterans of this sport.”
According to Biffle, Logano didn’t take too well to the advice. “That’s pretty disappointing,” he continued. “I got talked to by Sterling Marlin and a few other guys [when I was younger] and I learned a lot from it because there were things I was probably doing on the race track, being a younger guy and not realizing probably what I was doing.”
The veteran retaliated at Kansas last week, hitting Logano’s fender on the backstretch in an incident that nearly cost the No. 20 car a win. That caused a brief confrontation with Logano’s father, Tom, on pit road that wound up costing the elder Logano his hard card. But Biffle claims that particular incident was overblown.
“It really got taken out of context,” he explained, although he noted Tom Logano hasn’t called to apologize. “He was jogging down pit road headed for Victory Lane, and he kind of swerved out into [my] lane and gave me the sign that I was number one, and kind of veered back over and continued on down to Victory Lane. That was it.”
Hamlin On Working With Other Drivers
Still recovering from his mental mistake that took him all but out of title contention at California, Denny Hamlin was open and honest during a press conference Thursday in which he talked about trying to improve as a driver while gaining respect amongst his peers.
“Mark Martin, he took me out my rookie year at Martinsville and I talked to him afterwards and he said, ‘Well, you raced me hard so I took you out.’” Hamlin claimed in a revealing look at how he’s looked to get better. “Since then, I’ve communicated through text messages, phone calls to most of my competitors and I’ve said, ‘What do you expect from me?’”
“I think that’s important for young guys. They can either learn the hard way, or they can go out and try to find out themselves by reaching out to the veterans and figuring it out.”
As for last week’s incident, Hamlin pulled no punches in explaining his frustration at himself.
“It’s just one of those things that immediately when it happens you’re thinking, ‘WTF.’ It just frustrates you for about two days and then you get over it [until you] hear someone say, ‘Hey man, sorry about last weekend.’”
“You have to put it out of your mind and just try to hope for the best in the future.”
Quick Hits
- All four RPM cars are running Dodges this weekend, but the question is for how much longer? I talked to a source today that echoed the same thing we’ve been hearing for weeks: “No one knows what’s going on.” Even with the Roush visit to RPM this week, no definitive timetable for the switch has been announced.
“Well, I think there’s a lot to be done still, from what I’ve heard,” said Kasey Kahne when asked Thursday. “Are we going to move to Concord [next to the Roush shops]? I think that’s 50/50 … and then you look at the Ford part, are we going to run Yates engines and switch to Ford cars, and I would say it’s more like an 80 percent chance we do that. And maybe we stay in Statesville … and that’s where I’m at with what I’ve heard.”
- With David Gilliland focused on qualifying the No. 02 Cup car for Joe Gibbs Racing, Sterling Marlin filled in and practiced James Finch’s No. 1 Chevy he’ll drive this weekend on the Nationwide side. Gilliland will qualify and race the car Friday.
- Dave Blaney had the Denny Hamlin Foundation on his No. 66 Toyota Thursday, a new paint scheme designed to publicize the charity that supports children suffering from debilitating illnesses. However, the sponsorship was more awareness than funding, with the car not expected to go the distance Saturday night.
Jeff Burton Expects Kevin Harvick To Leave RCR
Following rumors that Kevin Harvick asked to be let out of his contract and that he was going to leave after his contract runs out in 2011, Jeff Burton strongly suggested in a press conference at Lowe’s that he also believes that Harvick will be moving on.
“Sometimes you’re better off going to the dentist and getting it over with,” Burton said at the press conference. “I think that everybody is behaving in a very professional manner, and everybody understands that Kevin has a year left on his contract, and he’s going to do everything in his power to do the best job for RCR. RCR is going to do everything in their power to do the best job for him.”
Harvick had told ESPN that he felt it might be time to “turn the page”. He has not won a Sprint Cup race since winning in the 2007 Daytona 500.

Lisa Kennedy Most Powerful Woman In Sports
International Speedway Corporation (“ISC”) today announced that Forbes has named ISC Chief Executive Officer Lesa France Kennedy the Most Powerful Woman in Sports. In selecting its list, Forbes focused primarily on individuals “whose decisions affect the largest sports-related revenue streams — be they from teams, leagues or corporate sponsors.” The article dated October 14, 2009, states France Kennedy’s “26-year career at ISC spans a period that expanded the sport past its Southern base.” The article added, “She rose to president in 2003 and to CEO this June. Analysts say she’s played a big role in most all of the company’s acquisitions and improvement projects dating back to the 1990s.”
Lowe’s Goodyear Tire Notes
Teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be running the same combination of left-and right-side tires at Charlotte this weekend — this is the same tire combination that NASCAR teams ran at Charlotte this past May — this is the only track at which teams will run this left-side tire code (D-4248), though they did run this right-side code (D-4234) at Las Vegas earlier this season — Goodyear did conduct one tire test at Charlotte this year, that being before the May races — Sprint Cup drivers participating in that March 17-18 test were Marcos Ambrose (Toyota), Jimmie Johnson (Chevrolet), Kasey Kahne (Dodge) and Paul Menard (Ford) — as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Charlotte — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. Estimated Pit Window: Every 50-55 laps, based on fuel mileage (Sprint Cup).
Kahne Stands By Bogus Caution Statement
During the NASCAR video teleconference on Tuesday, Kasey Kahne answered a few questions for Insider Racing News. The questions and answers are below:
Q. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, we all say things that we shouldn’t say. Do you still stand by your statement that NASCAR threw a phantom caution to make the race more entertaining?
KASEY KAHNE: I never said phantom. I think other people may have said that. But I was frustrated. We had a Budweiser Dodge. We made adjustments to get it to where it was. We were a 25th place car at the start of the race and we figured out how to get in the top six, top five. Kurt Busch made a mistake and got me in Biffle, and then I was in another wreck right after that. So I was frustrated. I was disappointed and kind of what had happened to us in the Chase, we have had top ten cars in each race and had a few different problems now that we couldn’t do anything about. I said that, and yeah, I didn’t see anything on the track. My eyes are wide open, so at the time I was definitely frustrated. But we also need exciting races and we need exciting finishes, and a track like that, the tire we are racing on there, there’s things that make that race, to me, pretty boring, and we needed a caution there at the end to make it exciting and I guess that’s what the fans got.
Q. You’ve had some problems with Ford in the past and we all are aware of the problems. How are you going to deal with that and have you had any discussions yet with anyone about it?
KASEY KAHNE: Well, yeah, things that happened in the past, I’m glad that we can put things behind us and get over stuff like that. So you know, I know there’s a new group there that’s very excited to have Richard Petty Motorsports and Ford cars. So if that happens, then I look forward to it. I look forward to running Yates engines and the power that they have put out, and just trying to do the best job I can for Ford. It’s been neat to race for Dodge. We have run some big races and really enjoy what we have done with Dodge in the past. If that ends, I go where the team goes and that will be to Ford maybe.
Q. Have you talked to anybody there yet?
KASEY KAHNE: Yeah, they have talked to me a few times, some of the guys that go to the racetrack, some of the Ford racing guys, and they seem really excited and want to do whatever it takes to get our No. 9 car winning races on that side, as well.

2010 #1 driver to be named soon: Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is close to naming a driver for the #1 car next season and it apparently won’t be Jamie McMurray, as has been widely speculated. A source close to the situation said McMurray, whose contract at Roush Fenway Racing is up after this season, no longer is in the picture and that two people are in the mix. Rumored drivers include: Bobby Labonte, Reed Sorenson, David Stremme, David Gilliland and Casey Mears.(see full post at ESPN Insiders)(10-16-2009)

Gordon says back is doing better: #24-Jeff Gordon met with media Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and discussed many items, including the llatest on his back problems: SPEAKING OF TREATMENTS, HOW IS YOUR BACK DOING?
“I’m happy to report nothing. Everything is good. I haven’t had any issues. The last little scare was Watkins Glen and I didn’t know how long it was going to take to recover from that and I feel like I’m fully recovered from that and I haven’t had any back issues. I mean it’s still there, but I haven’t had pain or anything that’s been too uncomfortable or any distraction in the car, so I’m happy about that. We’ve basically been doing the same things. During the week I would go to a chiropractor and get different types of treatments that they call manipulation, where they just stretch you out as much as they can, literally stretching each spinal cord in the lumbar area to try to just give it some relief; as well as the stem treatment. I mentioned that last week. It is electric-static stuff making the muscles do things which is the best way I can describe it (laughs). It’s supposed to loosen the muscles up. So I do that during the week. I’ve been able to incorporate some of that on the weekends because I like what that does and some adjustments as well.”(Chevy Racing)(10-16-2009)
Doug Yates confirmed that the new FR9 Ford engine will debut at Talladega Superspeedway in two weeks. “We had our sights on Charlotte, to run it here,” Yates said. “We just wanted to take our time and make sure everything was right. We’re fortunate to have the luxury to do that. We’re looking forward to Talladega but you know how much I love restrictor plate racing anyway.”(FoxSports)(10-16-2009)
Burton says decision on crew chief is near: #31-Jeff Burton met with members of the media at Lowe’s Motor Speedway and discussed his thoughts on the status of his team: HOW CLOSE WOULD YOU SAY YOU GUYS ARE TO RESOLVING THE CREW CHIEF SITUATION ON THE #31 FOR NEXT YEAR? “We’re real close. I don’t have a definite date but we’re real close to having all that figured out. There’s a lot of things that are changing at RCR. There’s a new way of doing business going into next year and in the midst of that crew chief search for the #31. We’re really optimistic that we have that put to bed and we’ll be able to talk about that fairly soon.”(Chevy Racing)(10-16-2009)
Kulwicki Family Gifts to Fund Scholarships, Motorsports Facilities: To honor the legacy of former NASCAR racing champion Alan Kulwicki, his family is making a gift commitment of nearly $1.9 million to support engineering education at UNC Charlotte. A trust fund created by the late driver’s mother since the age of 14, Thelma H. Kulwicki, will benefit the Motorsports Engineering Program in the William States Lee College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Sciences. Considered the largest individual gift ever received by the engineering school, the funds will be used for student scholarships and to construct a new motorsports engineering facility on the UNC Charlotte campus. The Kulwicki family also is contributing nearly $630,000 to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The gift also will be used for scholarships and to create the Alan Kulwicki Memorial Student Center in the university’s engineering building. In recognition of the Kulwicki family’s generosity, the UNC Charlotte Board of Trustees has approved naming the university’s existing motorsports research laboratory in honor of Kulwicki, who died in a plane crash several months [April 1, 1993] after he won the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup championship. The facility will be called the Alan D. Kulwicki Motorsports Laboratory. For her part, Thelma Kulwicki said she was struck by how much the students in the motorsports engineering program have in common with her son, who earned a mechanical engineering degree from UWM in 1977. Alan Kulwicki was the first college graduate to win stock car racing’s premier title, the Winston Cup Series championship. It is now called the Sprint Cup Series.(UNC Charlotte)(10-15-2009)
