The Chase, The Fans and the NFL
by Chuck Abrams
In a recent Detroit Free Press article by Mike Brudenell, Mike asked readers their thoughts of the Chase, which he is still personally leery of.
It is good fodder for a story and gets out the frustration that many fans feel. I have done the same as well as others. And while I am not in love with the Chase either, the fans don’t seem to have a better answer than NASCAR at this point.

Braun Racing Moving To Bigger Shop; Will Attempt Some Cup Races In 2010
Braun Racing, owner of the Nos. 10, 32, and 38 Toyotas in the Nationwide Series, has announced a move to a shop in Mooresville, NC, with 88,000 square feet of space as opposed to 28,000 in their current shop. The former home of both Petty Enterprises and Yates Racing, the new space was last occupied by Trail Motorsport before the team folded in early April. Plans are to complete the move by Memphis at the end of October.
“We ran into space issues around here running three cars,” said owner Todd Braun. “It just got to be too much. It just seemed like we needed to find a bigger place. There’s a lot of stuff out there right now, so it’s a good time to try to make a move and try to make everything a little bit better.”
Braun Racing also announced they’re going to attempt to run five Sprint Cup races next year, including the Daytona 500. The driver for these races has not been decided, but current Nationwide driver Jason Leffler is a candidate, as well as Reed Sorenson, Bobby Labonte, and Jamie McMurray.
Jimmie Johnson, Red Cross To Send Aid For Flood Victims
Jimmie Johnson, the current Sprint Cup champion and driver of the No. 48 Chevy, will be racing to aid the flood victims in Georgia this weekend at Dover.
Lowe’s, the sponsor of the No. 48 car, will be donating $48 for each lap Johnson completes in this weekend’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. An additional $4,800 will be donated for a Johnson victory; but regardless of where he finishes, they are also chipping in an extra $250,000 for flood relief.
“This has been an incredibly devastating event for Atlanta-area residents, and I know there are so many people who need our help right now,” said Johnson. “The Lowe’s No. 48 team will do everything we can to get to Victory Lane so we can raise as much money as possible. The American Red Cross helps so many people, and it’s the least we can do to show our support.”

Gordon, Earnhardt Lay Wreath
In the humid stillness of Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and team owner Rick Hendrick solemnly walked down a set of stairs toward the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They lined up, along with a member of the military honor guard who ceremonially patrol the tomb, and then stepped forward together to place a wreath in front of the giant marble structure. Hands over their hearts, they stood silently amidst the quiet of the cemetery where more than 330,000 men and women are buried. A few minutes later, in the basement of a nearby building just down the hall from the guards’ quarters, the two National Guard-sponsored drivers reflected on the magnitude of what they had just experienced. Arlington, which holds the remains of soldiers dating back to the Civil War, is still very much an active cemetery. It has 27-30 burials per day and had 6,900 last year; this year, the number will top 7,000.

Fans To Act As Grand Marshal
Throughout Martinsville Speedway’s history, the race fan has always come first and on October 25, those attending the TUMS Fast Relief 500 will feel extremely special in their once-in-a-lifetime role as the event’s “Grand Marshals and Official Starters.” — Throughout pre-race ceremonies leading up to the final honors of giving the “Gentlemen, Start Your Engines” command and waving the green flag to start the race, TUMS, Martinsville Speedway and the NASCAR community will recognize the fans. On a few occasions, fans have been invited to join the designated Grand Marshal in giving the command to start engines. However, at the TUMS Fast Relief 500, the honor belongs solely to the fans.
Dover Goodyear Tire Notes
Teams in NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be running the same combination of left- and right-side tires at Dover this weekend — this is the first time teams will be running either of these two tire codes — this tire set-up came out of a Goodyear test at Dover on August 4-5 — participating in that test were Chevrolet drivers Jimmie Johnson and Juan Pablo Montoya, Dodge drivers A.J. Allmendinger and David Stremme, Ford drivers Bobby Labonte and David Ragan, and Toyota drivers Marcos Ambrose and Kyle Busch — compared to what NASCAR teams ran at Dover in May, Goodyear has incorporated construction changes to both the left- and right-side tires — those changes are similar to those previously rolled into the Las Vegas and Charlotte tires and are designed to give the cars more grip — Goodyear has also brought a change to the right-side compound, based mostly on the work that was done in preparation for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and is designed to help “rubber in” the race track — unlike on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Dover — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Live from Dover on ABC: The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup continues this weekend as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races for 400 miles on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Monster Mile, Dover (Del.) International Speedway. ESPN’s live, flag-to-flag coverage of the race will air on ABC and is presented by Burger King. The telecast begins with NASCAR Countdown at 1:00pm/et and the race’s green flag is scheduled for 2:15pm/et. ESPN’s coverage from Dover includes NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying on Friday, Sept. 25, at 3:00pm/et on ESPN2, and a same-day telecast of NASCAR Sprint Cup final practice on Saturday at 7:00pm/et on ESPN. Dr. Jerry Punch will be lap-by-lap announcer for ESPN’s coverage, with analysis by Dale Jarrett and Andy Petree. Reporting from the pits will be Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Shannon Spake and Vince Welch, with Tim Brewer in the ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage. Allen Bestwick will host the pre-race NASCAR Countdown program with analysis by Rusty Wallace and Brad Daugherty in the ESPN pit studio.
Danica staying in Indy Car: Danica Patrick is now, officially, staying in the IndyCar Series. Patrick signed a three-year contract to remain with Andretti Green Racing during last weekend’s event at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan. She will continue to drive the #7 car with a Motorola-based sponsorship. Patrick could not be reached for comment Thursday night, but it is believed she has not resolved her options for driving a stock car in the future. Tony Stewart told reporters during last week’s Sprint Cup Series race in Loudon, N.H., that he has “not made an offer” to Patrick.(Indianapolis Star)(9-25-2009)
NHL star retires; wants NASCAR career now: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Patrice Brisebois retired Thursday, ending his 18-year NHL career with plans to drive on NASCAR’s Canadian series. The 38-year-old Brisebois spent 16 seasons with the Canadiens, retiring in third place on the franchise list for games by a defenseman (896), fourth for goals by a defenseman (87) and fifth in points by a defenseman (371). On March 14, he became the 11th player to play 1,000 games for the Canadiens. Brisebois said he’s seeking sponsors to fund the next phase of his career, as a driver in NASCAR’s Canadian Tire Series. “It’s a great team sport, like hockey,” Brisebois said of auto racing. “Your mechanic is kind of like your coach, and there’s a game plan, race strategy, so it’s a bit like a hockey team. I’m going to try and go as far as I can in auto racing. I’d love to be able to move on to the Nationwide or Sprint series, but it’s going to be very tough. Another dream of mine would be to do the 24 hours of Le Mans.”(Associated Press/ESPN.com)(9-25-2009)
Dover Rookie Notes: #20-Joey Logano was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the September 19 Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Logano posted a 21st-place finish and grabbed top rookie honors for the 20th time this season. Logano leads Scott Speed by 25 points (216-191) in the Raybestos® Rookie standings entering the September 27 AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. All three members of the 2009 Raybestos Rookie class have scored at least one top-10 finish. Michael McDowell was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the 2008 AAA 400 at Dover, claiming a 29th-place finish. Jimmie Johnson is the only Raybestos Rookie to sweep both Sprint Cup races at Dover. Johnson won both events in 2002 and led the most laps in each race. He is the only first-year driver to lead the most laps (four times for 170 laps) in the fall race at Dover. The best qualifying effort by a Raybestos Rookie for the fall race at Dover is third: Tony Stewart (1999), Brian Vickers (2004) and Kyle Busch (2005).(Camp & Assoc./Raybestos),
NASCAR History: 2004: Shane Hmiel wins the Las Vegas 350 truck race for his only victory in NASCAR’s top three touring series.(NASCAR.com)(9-25-2009)
Continental Fire & Safety on the #34: Continental Fire & Safety will be an associate sponsor on Front Row Motorsports’ #34 Sprint Cup entry and the primary sponsor on FRM’s #34 Nationwide entry at Dover International Speedway for the upcoming race weekend. The Continental Fire & Safety #34 Chevy in the Nationwide series will be piloted by Tony Raines who is currently 15 in driver points. FRM’s entry in the Sprint Cup series will be driven by John Andretti.(Continental Fire & Safety PR)(9-24-2009)

Limited schedule for Ryan Truex in 2010: [Ryan] Truex’s brother, Martin Truex Jr., hopes that Ryan can split time with him in one of Michael Waltrip Racing’s Nationwide cars next year. MWR is helping operate the East team for Ryan Truex, which is owned by Martin Truex Jr. “I hope to run five or eight [Nationwide] races [next year], trying to put a deal together where I could run some and maybe, hopefully, get my brother moved up and run a few races to get his feet wet,” Truex Jr. said earlier this month. “We’re working on all that right now. I really enjoy the Nationwide Series. & We’re going through sponsors right now, and they’re working hard on it, so hopefully we can put something together to run some races.” Ryan Truex said the season he has had in the East series has prepared him, but he’s sure going to Nationwide will be tough.(SceneDaily)(9-25-2009)
100 Nationwide starts for Sorenson: This weekend marks the 100th Nationwide Series start for#10-Reed Sorenson, who made his NASCAR debut on August 7, 2004 at O’Reilly Raceway Park. Then 18-year old Sorenson drove the #41 Discount Tire car for Chip Ganassi Racing. He qualified an impressive third and finished the race in the 13th position. His NASCAR career has spanned from 2004 to present (2009), with a collective total of 235 starts in two series.(Braun Racing PR)(9-24-2009)
Kahne still driving for Braun in 2010: Richard Petty Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne will still be able to compete in eight NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2010 for Braun Racing, despite a manufacturer conflict between RPM and Braun, team owner Todd Braun says. Braun, who fields Toyotas in the Nationwide Series, confirmed that Kahne can still run for him next year, despite RPM’s recent announcement of a switch to Ford for next season. “That’s what they’re telling us,” Braun said. Braun Racing announced in July that Kahne would drive in eight races in the team’s #38 Toyota in 2010, helping fuel speculation that RPM would switch to Toyota, but the Petty team will instead field Fords next year.(SceneDaily)(9-24-2009)

Goodyear Tire Notes – Las Vegas Motor Speedway: This is the first time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams will be running this combination of left- and right-side tires at Las Vegas . . . it is the same tire set-up that Sprint Cup teams ran with great success at Las Vegas in March . . . Truck Series teams have run this right-side tire code (D-4234) once before — at Charlotte this past May. . . this is the first time these teams will run on this left-side tire code (D-4232) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Las Vegas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. [Complete tire specs are posted on the Las Vegas Race Page.](Goodyear PR)(9-25-2009)
Skinner looking to return to RMM in 2010: UPDATE searching for more sponsors: From Mike Skinner’s blog: “We are still working on getting the entire new site [MikeSkinner.com] up and running for you again by end of season when we announce our new 2010 sponsors and partners…but thought I would give you all a quick update on this week! Randy Moss, David Dollar and myself are working hard to keep the team intact for 2010 – we have some sponsors returning for next season and some pitches in for a few more so we can continue a fight for another championship and trips to victory lane.(MikeSkinner.com)(9-21-2009)
UPDATE: Despite a strong points position and three wins this season, the chances of Skinner returning to his Randy Moss Motorsports team in 2010 are uncertain. He’d like to remain with the two-truck organization, which he joined just before the season started, but the group is still searching for additional sponsorship for next year on Skinner’s #5 entry. The 1995 series champion has been backed on a part-time basis this season by several sponsors, including Exide and PC*Miler Navigator, both of which Skinner expects to return in a part-time capacity in 2010. Skinner gives crew chief Eric Phillips much of the credit for his 2009 success and hopes the sponsorship situation will allow both to return in 2010. “Eric and I are going to these places together for the first time,” Skinner said. “That’s one of the reasons that I’m working pretty diligently at trying to keep this group together. We need another season together. “I think our best chance to win a championship is to stay together so when we come back around to these places we’ve got some notes.”(SceneDaily.com)(9-25-2009)

The Fort Frances, Ontario driver circled the historic one-mile oval in 24.877 seconds, an average speed of 144.712 mph.
“The biggest thing we have been working on today is learning the place; learning tire management and getting me acquainted with what that’s all about,” said Arpin.

NASCAR Continues To Expand Online Offerings
The ever changing world of online media is especially challenging for NASCAR as a sport. Instead of an organized league like baseball or football, NASCAR is a large group of independent contractors who simply meet to race. The race teams, the sponsors and even many drivers all have their own online presence.
