NASCAR announces Revised Testing Policy for 2010
On Wednesday, NASCAR announced that the testing ban instituted for this season will continue in the 2010 season; however, there are a couple of changes that should be noted.
Like this season, race teams participating in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Camping World Truck, and the Camping World East and West Series are prohibited from testing at tracks that are visited by NASCAR’s National series (Sprint Cup, Nationwide and the Camping World Truck Series). However, tracks that are only visited by non-National series (Camping World East and West Series, Canadian Tire Series, Whelen Modifieds North and South, etc.) are now eligible for tests.
This change allows tracks like Greenville-Pickens Speedway to host test sessions. Those tracks that host only regional series events along with weekly cards could benefit from the rental fees that are paid for tests.
In addition, it is still legal to test at venues that NASCAR does not host any events at. Examples of this are VIR (Virginia International Raceway) near Danville, Virginia and Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. Plenty of short track venues all over the country also qualify for this.

Hornaday Wins 3rd Quarter Driver Of The Year Award
Ron Hornaday Jr. proved that age is no barrier as the 51-year-old was voted for the third quarter DRIVER OF THE YEAR 2009. Hornaday, who drives in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series, was on more ballots than any other driver who was considered for the honor. He easily beat closest rival, IndyCar’s, Ryan Briscoe, in the voting 99 to 82 points. It was the first time that a driver from the Truck Series won the quarterly voting. Hornaday, driver of the #33 KHI (Kevin Harvick Inc.) Chevrolet, had five consecutive victories in the truck series and led points in the quarter ending September 12th. In the voting Hornaday took four first-place votes. Australia’s Briscoe, who drives the Penske Racing Dallara/Honda, also had four first-place votes. The NHRA’s Antron Brown was third in the voting with two first place votes and 63 points. Kyle Busch, who races in all three of the top NASCAR series, had three first-place votes and finished fourth with 54 points. Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Donny Schatz and Mark Martin also received one first-place ballot.
Daytona Tire Tests Conclude
Five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers wrapped up a two-day Goodyear tire test on Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway. Drivers testing tire compounds for Goodyear during the two-day test at the historic 2.5-mile tri-oval included:
* David Ragan in the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing
* Marcos Ambrose in the No. 47 JTG-Daugherty Racing Toyota
* Clint Bowyer in the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing
* Joey Logano in the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing
* Brad Keselowski in the No. 12 Penske Racing Dodge.
In between rain showers, drivers shook down tires for Goodyear in advance of the prestigious 52nd annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 14.

#8 team returning in 2010? The folks at Dale Earnhardt Inc. are working at bringing the #8 car to both the Nationwide and Cup series next year. The plan would be for Jeffrey Earnhardt, grandson of Dale, to drive the #8 car in the Nationwide series and have that team based out of the DEI shops in Mooresville, N.C. If sponsorship can be found, the #8 car would return to Cup and be based out of the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing shop in Cocord, N.C. “We do have plans to bring the #8 car back for next season,” Jeff Steiner executive VP and general manager at DEI, told me [Dustin Long] Wednesday afternoon. “We are working with a number of sponsors. It’s not a for sure deal. We haven’t announced that we are officially bringing it back. .. I don’t think we would see anything with the #8 car at the Sprint Cup level in 2009. I think based where we’re at with sponsor discussions, I don’t foresee that happening this year, but it is one of our aspirations to get that car back on the track together with the #1 and the #42.”
So, would the #8 come back fulltime or would it be acceptable to bring it back part time in 2010?”I think we would consider something part time,” Steiner told me. “In today’s economy and today’s NASCAR, we need to look at all potential opportunities to get either young developmental drivers or other people out on the track and if we have an opportunity to do that and get the #8 back on the track in 2010, I think we would certainly consider that.
As for Jeffrey Earnhardt: “That would be something we would be looking at running him in an #8 fulltime in the Nationwide level,” Steiner said. “We’re still working on sponsorships. Our intention … having him in a family number. I think we’re hopeful (of a fulltime schedule for Jeffrey). We’re pretty bullish on that potential for 2010.”(Roanoke Times)(9-24-2009)
Mars releases 2010 Paint Schemes for #18; adds Doublemint: Mars, Incorporated announced its 2010 NASCAR paint scheme schedule for the #18 Toyota piloted by Kyle Busch in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which includes the addition of Wrigley’s Doublemint gum as another primary sponsor. Mars is also expanding its relationship with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and COMBOS, shifting gears to sponsor Kyle Busch and the #18 Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with three paint schemes, replacing the single paint scheme in the 2009 Sprint Cup Series. Mars brands will serve as the primary sponsor of JGR’s #18 Toyota in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for 30 points races in 2010, including 23 M&M’S races, three Pedigree races, two Snickers races and the two inaugural races for Wrigley’s Doublemint gum. M&M’S will also be the primary sponsor of the #18 during the Bud Shootout and Sprint All-Star Race.(Mars PR), see images of the cars on the 2010 #18 Team Schemes page. Interstate Batteries will return and sponsor the car for six (6) races: Auto Club Speedway in February, Texas in April, New Hampshire in June, Daytona in July, Michigan in August and Dover in September (same races as 2009).(9-24-2009)

New chassis for Kurt Busch: #2-Kurt Busch doesn’t believe the new chassis he’ll use in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway is a risk. The 2004 Cup champion said the chassis has been ready since the Atlanta race on Labor Day weekend, “but we didn’t want to change our program… because of how the car raced there in March when we won.” The Penske Racing team picked Dover because it has similar characteristics to Atlanta. “The aerodynamic numbers of chassis 700 showed up to be the same for what we ran in June, and June was a great finish for us at the Monster Mile where we finished fifth,” said Busch, recalling the first Dover race. “We ran competitively all day and so the body being a given… we can really understand what this new chassis is going to bring to us. If you rely on your engineering department, everybody behind the scenes at Penske Racing, they’ll tell you that it’s better,” he said. “It’s lighter, it’s faster, so we can’t be wrong in bringing it.”(ESPN Insider)(9-24-2009)
Stewart thanks HMS employees in person: On Monday [9/21], #14-Tony Stewart made a surprise visit to the Hendrick Motorsports chassis and engine shop in Concord, NC. It was his second visit this year to thank all those employees face to face for their part in helping both #39-Ryan Newman and Stewart’s cars make the chase and for all they’ve done for them this year.(9-24-2009)
FedEx Racing Races to Prepare in Philadelphia: FedEx Racing, sponsor of Denny Hamlin’s #11 Toyota, will join the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania this week, welcoming Philadelphia-area students on Thursday for the Race to Prepare, an event that stresses disaster preparedness through the building of a disaster kit and preparedness education. As part of the company’s commitment to supporting disaster preparedness and relief efforts around the world, and in celebration of the long-term relationship with the organization, FedEx will be making a donation to the local American Red Cross chapter.(FedEx Racing)(9-24-2009)
Harvick to meet with firefighter foundation: Prior to Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway, #29-Kevin Harvick will make an appearance in Dover International Speedway’s Hospitality Tent Village to meet members of the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation. This marks the second year the track is hosting members of the organization at an NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event. The NFFF exists to help the families and colleagues of the nearly 100 firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty each year across the country. Harvick’s father, Mike, is a retired firefighter.(RCR)(9-24-2009)
NASCAR announced its 2010 testing policy for its three national and two regional touring series. The policy will again prohibit testing at tracks which host NASCAR national series events, by teams in the following series: NASCAR Sprint Cup; NASCAR Nationwide; NASCAR Camping World Truck; NASCAR Camping World East; and NASCAR Camping World West. In 2010, however, testing will be allowed at NASCAR-sanctioned tracks that host a regional touring event but do not host a national series event. Based on this season’s regional tour schedules, the following tracks would be eligible to host tests next year: Greenville-Pickens Speedway; Tri-County Motor Speedway; South Boston Speedway; Thompson International Speedway; Music City Motorplex; Adirondack International Speedway; Lime Rock Park; Thunder Hill Raceway; All American Speedway; Madera Speedway; Douglas County Speedway; Toyota Speedway at Irwindale; Portland International Raceway; Miller Motorsports Park; Colorado National Speedway.(NASCAR PR)(9-23-2009)

Herd Racing, Faith’s sister race organization, will also send drivers Brett Rowe and Chad Beahr to help prepare the car, as well as spotter Joe Gilley. Hornaday wins 3rd Quarter Driver of the Year Award: Ron Hornaday Jr. proved that age is no barrier as the 51-year-old was voted for the third quarter Driver of the Year 2009. Hornaday, who drives in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series, was on more ballots than any other driver who was considered for the honor. Hornaday, driver of the #33 KHI (Kevin Harvick Inc.) Chevrolet, had five consecutive victories in the truck series and led points in the quarter ending September 12th. Barry Schmoyer, President of the Driver of the Year Foundation, said “what more can you add? I cannot recall someone of Ron’s age, running exclusively in the Truck Series, being a winner of this award. It confirms my pride in the panel to recognize the best drivers.” In the voting Hornaday took four first-place votes. Australia’s Briscoe, who drives the Penske Racing Dallara/Honda, also had four first-place votes. The NHRA’s Antron Brown was third in the voting with two first place votes and 63 points. NASCAR announces 2010 testing policy: NASCAR announced today its 2010 testing policy for its three national and two regional touring series.
