Overnight Ratings Down 21.9 Percent For Chase Race #1
NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship was supposed to translate into maintaining fan interest throughout a 36-race regular season. Instead, it looks like they’re all getting interested in something else.

ABC posted just a 2.5 overnight rating for the first Chase race at New Hampshire, down 21.9 percent from the 3.2 rating of a year ago. That’s the lowest total viewership of any playoff event since the point system was adjusted back in 2004, also registering as the worst of any of NASCAR’s 27 events this season. The disappointing rating is also 17 percent lower than what the race posted in September 2003 — the year before the Chase began, when the 300-lapper was broadcast on cable network TNT.

Physical, Mental Evaluation Ordered For Mayfield
The latest chapter of the Jeremy Mayfield saga took another twist Monday when more depositions were filed by NASCAR lawyers against the beleaguered driver; and once again, there’s former family members listed among the witnesses. In a story first reported by Jenna Fryer of the Associated Press, former Mayfield brother-in-law David Keith produced signed testimony claiming he saw the Cup Series veteran snort meth several times in his presence from 1998 to 2000.

Barry Lee, Michael Buskill and Steven Russelburg, longtime friends of the driver, also testified to witnessing him use methamphetamine on multiple occasions. These depositions were taken in the presence of both NASCAR and Mayfield’s attorneys.

To coincide with the additional evidence, NASCAR has filed an order for U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen to order a full physical and mental examination of Mayfield to determine if he has a substance abuse problem. The sanctioning body has also picked out specific physicians and suggests a November timetable for such an evaluation to begin.

No word yet on when the judge might rule on these filings. In the meantime, Mayfield remains suspended from the sport indefinitely as the result of a failed drug test for methamphetamines May 1st.

No. 18 Cup Team Penalized for NHMS Infraction
In post-race technical inspection at New Hampshire on Sunday, the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota of Kyle Busch measured too low at the left front corner of the vehicle. On Tuesday, NASCAR announced post-race penalties that have been levied on the team for violating Sections 12-1 (the blanket “Actions Detrimental to Stock Car Racing”), 12-4-l (a determination by a NASCAR official that race equipment used in an event does not conform to NASCAR rules), and Section 20-12.8 1b (left front fender height did not meet required specs; too low in post-race inspection).

As is typical for this type of violation, the No. 18 team has been stripped of 25 owner points while Kyle Busch has been stripped of 25 driver points. In addition, Crew Chief Steve Addington has been fined $25,000 and placed on probation until December 31st. The penalty does not move Kyle Busch out of 13th place in points, but it does drop the difference between Busch and 14th place Matt Kenseth to just 66 markers heading to Dover.

Busch finished fifth at Loudon, putting together back-to-back top 5 finishes for the first time since Fontana and Las Vegas back in February/March.

Broken Crank Caused Engine Failure
The conspiracy theorists are out in force, and this time their focus is Kasey Kahne and that Richard Petty Motorsports engine that blew up last weekend at New Hampshire. It is a little strange that Kahne didn’t have an engine falter all year and had one fail at New Hampshire, a 1.058-mile track where the only other driver to have an engine failure this year was Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr. It is a little bit of a coincidence that the engine failed a week after many people in the engine shop learned about a potential merger with Yates Racing and that their job situation is iffy at best, considering that Roush Yates Engines are expected to be producing the team’s power plants next year. It wouldn’t be surprising if many guys at the Richard Petty Motorsports engine department are bitter right now, considering how much time and effort they put into the new Dodge engine only to see their Dodge program disappear. Throw in that they certainly could lose their jobs, and you’ve got, what they call “motive.” But it seems so hard to believe that the broken crankshaft found in the engine afterward could have been the result of sabotage,

New Corporate Headquarters
For over 50 years, Daytona Beach has been the mecca of motorsports racing due to the vision of “Big” Bill France. Where there was nothing but open fields and saw grass, he envisioned huge crowds cheering the fastest cars and drivers racing at a spectacular world-class facility. Through the France Family’s hard work, the ‘Great American Race’, the Daytona 500, put Daytona Beach on the global sports map. Officially introduced today as the International Motorsports Center, the eight-story headquarters building under construction directly across from Daytona International Speedway, is designed to carry on the great heritage of motorsports that is synonymous with the France Family and Daytona Beach. The International Motorsports Center, scheduled to be completed in late 2009, will serve as the world headquarters for International Speedway Corporation (“ISC”), NASCAR and Grand-Am Racing Association (“Grand-Am”)

RCR 40th Anniversary Fan Day
World Class Driving, the premier on-road driving experience, will conduct a special program October 22-23 as part of Richard Childress Racing’s 40th Anniversary Fan Day celebration. The six-car driving experience will include the chance to drive and compare the three American legends (1969 RCR Series 3 Camaro, 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1) with the three European legends (Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Super Leggera, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren). Participants will spend 30 minutes in each car driving the most scenic roads around RCR’s North Carolina headquarters in Welcome; approximately one hour north of Charlotte. World Class Driving will also make a charitable donation to the Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma.

Overnight Ratings Off 21.9 Percent
ABC’s broadcast of Sunday’s Sylvania 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway earned a 2.5 overnight rating from Nielsen Media Research, Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating is 21.9 percent lower than the 3.2 ABC earned overnight for the race in 2008.

NASCAR Levels New Charges At Mayfield
NASCAR filed affidavits Monday in U.S. District Court from three Kentucky residents and a deposition from a former brother-in-law who said they have seen suspended Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield use methamphetamines at least 50 times since 1997. The affidavits were part of a request asking the court Monday for a mental and physical examination of Mayfield to determine if he suffers from a substance-abuse disorder and/or adult-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Mayfield has sued NASCAR for suspending him for a May 1 drug test that it says was positive for methamphetamines but Mayfield claims produced a false positive reading as the result of the prescription drug Adderall (for ADHD diagnosed earlier this year) and over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin-D. He is also suing for defamation. Mayfield has denied using methamphetamines in several interviews and court documents. The new affidavits are from people who knew Mayfield from his home state of Kentucky..

#18 car too low in post race inspection: UPDATE 2: A statement from Joe Gibbs Racing: “The situation was caused when the left front spring became dislodged. This resulted in the left front corner of the car to be lower and resulted in a change to the car’s handling which had to be compensated for during the race. Consequently, the car measured low during post-race inspection. We accept NASCAR’s ruling on the issue today.”(JGR PR)(9-23-2009)

Vickers Youngest Driver ever to have 200 starts in Sprint Cup Series:: This weekend at Dover, #83-Brian Vickers will become the youngest driver ever to reach 200 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts in six full seasons of competition. Of the 200 starts, Vickers has only driven for two teams, Hendrick Motorsports, for which he made 113 starts, and Team Red Bull with 86 starts. “Wow,” Vickers said. “Makes me feel old! It’s pretty cool when you think about it. It’s a big accomplishment. I’m glad to have been involved in the sport, at this level, for that long. It’s only going to get better as it goes on and as I progress in my career.” Vickers currently is eighth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings with one win, four top fives, 13 top 10s and six poles. “2009 has been a great overall highlight with all that’s gone on with this team over the years and the building we have done,” he said. “The win. The Chase. It’s been fantastic. My first career win was great but there is something really gratifying about building a program from the ground up and seeing it succeed.”(NASCAR)(9-23-2009)

Some Chase Notes going in Dover: Only once, when #48-Jimmie Johnson made the miraculous rally to win his first championship in 2006, has the eventual winner been lower than second place after the first Chase race. Only one New Hampshire winner, however, has gone on to win the title. That was #2-Kurt Busch [then in the #97 Ford] in Chase I in 2004. Johnson has gone 27 consecutive Chase races with at least a Top 15 finish. Sunday was his 18th Top 5 over the same period, a 67% mark. He has Top 10s in 23 of the last 27 Chase races, an 85% rate, and podium finishes in 16 of 27.

Montoya still not happy with Martin: From a NASCAR teleconference Tuesday:
Q: Can you talk … more about the deal with Mark Martin and whether you had a chance to chat with him [after the New Hampshire race].
Montoya: “No, I haven’t, first off, I haven’t really talked to Mark at all. I think did he an awesome race and he did what he had to do to win the race. I wasn’t the happiest guy. I did some interviews this morning and I said that. It’s fun when you do it to someone else but it’s not when they do it to you but it’s part of it. For the Chase, you know, we have to bring our A Game, and we did. There’s no holding back, nothing, we have to go. We have to try to go every week. Some weeks are going to be better than others but time to go.”(NASCAR PR)(9-23-2009)

Geek Squad colors for Sadler at Dover: Elliott Sadler’s #19 Dodge will sport a familiar black, white and orange paint scheme at Dover’s “Monster Mile” this weekend honoring those electronic wizards with the white shirts and clip-on ties from Best Buythe Geek Squad. Sadler’s race car looks similar to the signature car driven by the 21,000 certified Geek Squad agents around the world. Instead of solving customers’ electronic challenges, Sadler hopes to drive his #19 Best Buy/Geek Squad Dodge to another top-10 finish. On Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Sadler finished eighthhis fourth top-10 finish in 2009(RPM). See an image of the scheme on my #19 Team Schemes page.(9-23-2009)

As part of that relationship, Vaseline MEN will be the primary sponsor of the #1 Chevy driven by Martin Truex Jr. at this weekend’s race at Dover International Raceway.(Earnhardt Ganassi PR), see an image of the car on the #1 team paint schemes page.(9-23-2009)

Newman’s Team Grabs Tissot Pit Road Award in New Hampshire: Ryan Newman’s crew won the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was the second Tissot win of the season for the #39 team, which became the fifth multiple winner of the weekly competition. The first Tissot win for Newman’s U.S. Army/Haas Automation team came at the April race in Phoenix. Newman’s Chevy spent the least amount of time on pit road in New Hampshire – 137.708 seconds – during the 300-lap race at the 1.058-mile oval. The workmanlike effort on pit road helped Chase driver Newman to a seventh-place finish. The #39 over-the-wall crew at New Hampshire consisted of: Scott Brzozowski (front tire changer), Josh Mick (front-tire carrier), Andrew Turner (jackman), Daniel Rankin (rear-tire changer), Jason Fowler (rear-tire carrier), Michael Moore (gas man), Andy Rueger (catch can) and Jay Guarneri (windshield, 8th man). The team’s pit crew coach is Joe Piette. The pit crew win, which pays $5,000, lifted the #39 team into a tie for fourth place in the Tissot standings with its Stewart-Haas Racing teammate – the #14 crew for Tony Stewart. Greg Biffle’s crew leads the competition with five wins. The team with the most Tissot Pit Road Precision Award wins at the completion of the 36-race Sprint Cup schedule will receive a $100,000 bonus plus Tissot watches for the crew and driver.(Tissot)(9-23-2009)

NASCAR History: Sept. 23 — 1984: Sam Ard starts the only Cup race in his storied career, finishing last in the 31-car field of the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Ard lasts one lap before retiring with steering problems. Ard competed in the then-Busch Series from 1982 to 1984, winning championships in ‘83 and ‘84.(NASCAR.com)(9-23-2009)

Looking beyond Mark Martin’s victory
First to the finish: A lot of people might buy into Mark Martin’s aw shucks persona but if he wasn’t such a determined competitior, he wouldn’t be racing and winning races at age 50. Juan Pablo Montoya learned that lesson Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Martin defended his lead with two laps to go by coming down to the inside line and blocking Montoya. It was a tight fit but Martin clearly was the leader. Montoya, though, wasn’t thrilled. After the race ended, Montoya said on his radio about Martin’s move: “What he did, not cool at all.” Then after exiting the car, Montoya labled it “a pretty dirty track.” hamptonroads.com/2009/09/looking-beyond-mark-martins-victory

Familiar face part of #25 team: Terry Cook will be making his 10th start this weekend in the HT Motorsports #25 Cajun Industries Toyota. Former team owner and crew chief, Dave Fuge recently joined the team. Cook comments on addition of Fuge; “”It’s a great thing when you have more dependable people to lean on each week and adding Dave Fuge to our team seems to be a big help to our team. In racing you don’t often see results overnight, but in time it will show in your finishes. Dave (Fuge) being there has given Danny (Rollins, Crew Chief) more time to focus on setups and not worry about the details of how the changes are getting made during practice. Dave has helped make those changes go smoother, and is there to double check the details. Races can be won or lost on the details so we are trying to cover all our bases. We look forward to great things in our future.”(HT Motorsports PR)(9-22-2009)

Alli Owens, Joey Coulter on “Inside ARCA” Today
After spending the 2009 season driving for D’Hondt Motorsports, Alli Owens recently announced that she would be driving for Venturini Motorsports in 2010. The Daytona Beach, Florida driver plans on competing in the final two events in 2009. Entered in the no. 19 car for Kansas and the no. 7 for Rockingham, we’ll find out what that means. She also joins us on “Inside ARCA” today at 3:00 PM. Also on today’s show is rookie Joey Coulter, currently fourth in ARCA RE/MAX Series points. Coulter appeared to be on his way to his first victory of his career Saturday night at Salem when an encounter with the turn four wall ended his night 20 laps shy of the finish. “Tech Talk” with crew chief Patrick Donahue follows at the bottom of the hour. Donahue, the crew chief for rookie Craig Goess, is at the test today at Rockingham. “Inside ARCA” airs each and every Wednesday at ARCAracing.com from 3:00-4:00 PM ET, and re-airs every Wed night at 8:00 PM.

Three NASCAR Touring Series Championships On The Line This Weekend

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2009) – The champagne is ready, and the trophies are waiting. This weekend, three NASCAR Touring Series across North America will crown their champions, and two other series will take a significant step toward deciding their titlist during one of their biggest events of their season.
First up is the NASCAR Camping World Series East, which will settle things Friday at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The ‘Monster Mile’ has served as the coronation grounds for a pair of first time champions over the last two years – Joey Logano (2007) and Matt Kobyluck (2008) – and will do so again this season.
Rookie Ryan Truex, a 17-year-old development driver for Michael Waltrip Racing, will take the green flag for the Sunoco 150 with a 30-point edge over Eddie MacDonald. Truex has finished third or better in each of the last seven races, including three victories.
Truex can win the championship by finishing fourth or better, by finishing fifth or better and leading a lap, or by finishing sixth or better and leading the most laps.
MacDonald is likewise riding a wave of momentum, having won the Heluva Good! Fall 125 Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to cut 20 points off Truex’s lead. The 29-year-old from Rowley, Mass., is enjoying a breakthrough season with four top fives and nine top 10s in 10 races.
Jody Lavender maintains an outside shot, but would essentially need to win the race and have Truex and MacDonald finish in the back of the field.
Saturday will see two championship celebrations.
Andrew Ranger is on the cusp of wrapping up his second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobile 1 championship in three years. The 22-year-old from Roxton Pond, Quebec, needs just to start the final race, the Z-Line Designs 250 presented by The Dodge Dealers of Ontario and Coca-Cola, at Kawartha Speedway Saturday to wrap up the title.
With the championship, Ranger would secure a spot in the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, to be run Jan. 30, 2010 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.). Philip Morris, who won the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series crown last week, has already earned one of the spots that go to the seven champions in NASCAR’s developmental series.
Jason Bowles is almost as close in the NASCAR Camping World Series West, but defending champion Eric Holmes still holds hope that he can win his third title in four years if Bowles falters.
Bowles, 27, of Ontario, Calif., leads Holmes by 78 points heading into Saturday’s Toyota/Copart 150 presented by Golden State Steel & Stair at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.
Bowles needs only to finish 16th or better to wrap up his first NASCAR title. Holmes, 34, of Escalon, Calif., must finish fourth or better and lead the most laps to keep his hopes alive.
Last year, the roles were reversed. Bowles won the final race, but Holmes, who had the lead coming in, finished fifth to take the title.
Truex, MacDonald, Bowles and Holmes have already secured spots in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown by virtue of winning NASCAR Camping World Series races this season.
Sunday, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will get together for the second combination race of the season for the Made In America Whelen 300 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
While both tours will have two races remaining after Martinsville, Sunday’s race could shake things up.
Donny Lia was third Friday in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire to close within 48 points of defending champion Ted Christopher. Ryan Preece, the defending Martinsville winner, is 26 points back of Lia.
Andy Seuss won at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., Saturday in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, but George Brunnhoelzl III finished second to keep his points lead at 125 points.

The Nascar Insiders
This Ain’t Formula One Harvick
What started out as a tension filled weekend between the likes of Kevin Harvick Inc. and Thorsport Racing ended up turning into a bizarre display of teammate on teammate crime. Hey Harvick, if there is one driver that you can be damn sure isn’t going to pull over for you, it’s Ron Hornaday.
