Martin Wins First Chase Race At Loudon
Mark Martin took a giant leap toward winning his first Sprint Cup championship by taking the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday. It was Martin’s fifth victory in 2009 and the 40th win of his 749 race career. It was Martin’s first victory at the New Hampshire track. “Alan (Gustafson, crew chief) won that race — that’s all I got to say,” Martin said. “He took a driver that can’t drive Loudon and put a set-up in it that we could run along reasonable. Just like I said before the race, if they can stumble around and get me in the front then I might be able to stay there with it. That’s what we did, but it was sure tough.”

Denny Hamlin took the second spot while pole sitter Juan Pablo Montoya posted a third-place finish in today’s race, his third top-five and 13th top-10. This is his eighth top-five and 22nd top-10 in 100 career starts. He claimed his fifth career top-five on a superspeedway. Montoya led four times for 105 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors. Montoya captured the honor for the second time this season. Montoya has now led 274 laps in 66 superspeedway starts and 309 laps in 100 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. He has led 269 laps in 27 starts this season.

Jimmie Johnson brought his Chevrolet home in the fourth spot and Kyle Busch finished fifth followed by his older brother, Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer to round out the top ten. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Dover International Speedway next Sunday for the second race in the “Chase for the Championship.” Greg Biffle was the winner of this race last year. The race is scheduled for 1:00 PM /Eastern time and will be broadcast on ABC television. The race will also be broadcast live on MRN Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Why The Late Yellow Flag?
Robin Pemberton, NASCAR spokesman, was asked following the Sylvania 400 on Sunday, why the yellow flag wasn’t displayed in a more timely manner? A.J. Allmendinger spun out on the frontstretch on lap 299 of 300 and and the drivers were allowed to race all the way around the track — at full speed and apparently unaware that Allmendinger’s car was sitting in the middle of the track, unable to refire. Coming off of Turn 4, the caution light finally came on but some drivers raced past the helpless driver. — “We were waiting to see if he could get going and get out of the way,” said Pemberton. “You wait as long as you can to try to not affect the outcome of a race. We felt like we had adequate time when we threw the caution. We tried to give adequate time and notice for the cars to slow down. We don’t like the race to end under caution. We felt like we gave enough time for safety sake.” — Asked if NASCAR waits longer on the last lap to try to finish under green, Pemberton said; “I believe we wait as long as we can. There are times during the middle of the race when a car will turn around and we buy some time and see if it gets going and that happens quite a bit. It just gets more noticed when it’s the last lap of the race.”

Kyle Busch Car Too Low
NASCAR announced after the Sylvania 300 that the fifth-place car, the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18, drivern by Kyle Busch, was found to be too low in post-race inspection. Any penalties or fines will most likely will be handed out by NASCAR on Tuesday.

Fan Appreciation Day A Hit At Talladega
As early as 8 a.m., fans were lining up in front of Talladega Superspeedway to take their vehicles on a lap around the 2.66 mile tri-oval during Fan Appreciation Day. Officials estimate 12,000 fans attended the event. Some came from as far away as Indiana and Florida, but all left with a story to tell. After taking their turn driving around the track, fans enjoyed lunch provided by Talladega Superspeedway, Pepsi and Golden Flake, a Q&A and autograph signing with Richard Brickhouse, Dave Marcis, Sterling Marlin and track president Rick Humphrey and a free concert by Darryl Worley.

Kahne Questions RPM Leadership
Who’s in charge at Richard Petty Motorsports? Even Kasey Kahne wants to know. Kahne’s race team announced last week that it will absorb Yates Racing and switch to Fords next season. That merger creates quite a crowded hierarchy, one that includes Yates partners Doug Yates and Max Jones, RPM co-owner George Gillett, managing partner Foster Gillett, executive operations director Robbie Loomis and Richard Petty himself. As for who will be the ultimate decision-maker out of that group — well, not even Kahne seems to know for certain. “That’s a tough question, because I really don’t know who it is, either. So, I don’t know,” the team’s lead driver said Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, site of Sunday’s opening Chase race. There are not a lot of answers out there right now. I don’t know if it’s because we’re in the middle of a lot of things, we just don’t have a person in that position. I think Robbie Loomis is supposedly going to be that guy, but I don’t think that he is yet.”

Could be minor tweaks to testing ‘ban’: At NASCAR’s crew chiefs meeting here [NHMS] Saturday morning, Sprint Cup teams were given a few tweaks on the car-of-tomorrow and on testing for 2010, but it’s unclear if more might be coming. NASCAR officials are apparently leaning toward okaying Greenville-Pickens Speedway [SC] for Cup testing next season, to give teams a less expensive testing venue a track closer to their Mooresville, NC, shops. But some teams say they would continue flying/driving down to places like New Smyrna in Florida for testing anyway.
Teams report that Texas World Speedway in College Station, TX, may be ground smoother, to eliminate bumps. And if softwalls are installed there, the track could be a good testing venue too, since it’s not on the NASCAR tour. Greg Biffle ran a few laps at Texas World in testing earlier this year, but he said at 218 mph, the bumps and the lack of soft walls, the track was too dangerous.(MikeMulhern.net)(9-21-2009)

Crew chief changes at Roush? There is supposedly a meeting planned at Roush Fenway Racing featuring General Manager Robbie Reiser and representatives from Ford. Could crew chief changes be in RFR’s future? One rumor circulating NHMS Sunday morning had veteran crew chief Jimmy Fennig connecting with former Roush racer Jeff Burton at RCR. Not so, Fennig said. “After 13 years with Jack, my goal is to retire from Roush Racing,” Fennig said. “But I’m getting too old to be on the road.” Another scenario places Fennig in a research and development role. Fennig says testing suits him just fine.(FoxSports)(9-21-2009)

Clint Pittman, rear tire changer on the #07 Jack Daniel’s Chevy of Casey Mears, was clipped by #11-Denny Hamlin during pit stops on Lap 69. Pittman injured his foot and was replaced by Shane Church, who practices with the backup crew at Richard Childress Racing. Mears restarted 27th following the accident and remained outside the top 25 until a call to stay out on Lap 193 by crew chief Todd Berrier. Mears restarted sixth and finished 13th, his third top 15 finish in the last six races. Pittman will see an orthopedic doctor on Monday. Doctors at the track infield care center suspected a small fracture to the top of his foot, according to RCR pit crew coordinator Matt Clark.(FoxSports)(9-21-2009)

Martin down to four tracks without a win: There are now four current race tracks the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at that #5-Mark Martin has not won a Sprint Cup race. Martin also ran five races at Nashville and four races at Riverside and didn’t win at either:
Pocono: 0 for 45 with six finishes of 2nd, last in 8/2004
Daytona: 0 for 48 with a best finish of 2nd in 2/2007
Indianapolis: 0 for 16 with a best finish of 2nd in 8/1998 and 7/2009
Homestead: 0 for 9 with a best finish of 2nd in 11/2005
Won at Chicago on 7-11-2009 after failing to win 8 times
Won at New Hampshire on 9-20-2009 after failing to win there 24 times
(9-21-2009)

Montoya blows off interview, in trouble?: #42-Juan Pablo Montoya may be in trouble with NASCAR certainly with its PR operations — after an incident in which he blew off a pre-planned satellite interview with a major California Fox affiliate, Sacramento’s KTXL. Montoya and NASCAR both are now on that station’s D-list. And Sacramento is, of course, the state capital, where governor Arnold Schwarzenegger holds forth. Schwarzenegger typically attends NASCAR events in that state, and will likely be at Southern California’s Auto Club Speedway in a few weeks for the California 500 chase race. Montoya was doing a routine round of Sprint Cup championship chase interviews [Saturday?] in advance for the first race of the chase, but when 5 o’clock rolled around, he took off his mike and walked off the NASCAR set. Much to the chagrin of the KTXL reporters who had been patiently awaiting their NASCAR-scheduled spot in the interview line. See the video of the incident and Jim Crandell’s commnetary about it and NASCAR’s waning popularity at fox40.com.(MikeMulhern.net)(9-21-2009)

Gale looking for 2010 ride: Cale Gale will no longer be under contract at Kevin Harvick Inc. next year. He is talking to several teams and is hopeful that he will be able to put something together for 2010. He has talked to some Nationwide teams as well as Truck teams to find a new home. JR Motorsports is an affiliate of Hendrick Motorsports, where Eury Jr. currently works in the research and development department. But Earnhardt Jr. has another plan for Eury Jr., who was his crew chief for two seasons at Dale Earnhardt Inc. and then moved with him to Hendrick to guide the #88 Cup car until he was replaced by Lance McGrew as crew chief in late May during a season where Earnhardt Jr. struggled in his Sprint Cup car. Earnhardt Jr. wasn’t exactly specific on the job title for Eury Jr., but he explained he has a plan for his cousin to join the JR Motorsports operation, where Eury Jr.’s father (Tony “Pops” Eury Sr.) serves as a crew chief/competition director and several other Earnhardt family members work for the Nationwide Series organization.(SceneDaily)(9-19-2009)

Penske Racing development driver Parker Kligerman will make his Nationwide Series debut at Kansas Speedway next month. Kligerman will drive the #22 Penske Racing entry, a team that will lay the groundwork for Brad Keselowski’s full-time squad in 2010. “There are a lot of talented people out there and we are looking at all of our options,” said Jonathan Gibson, Vice President, Marketing and Communications, Penske Racing. “For a while now, we have been working to assemble a championship caliber Nationwide organization for both of our cars in 2010. Justin has had a terrific season this year and our intention is to hit the ground running with both of our teams in 2010.” Kligerman, who turned 19 last month, is currently tied for the lead with Justin Lofton in the ARCA Re/Max Series championship. He tops the leaderboard with seven wins to his credit earned on both asphalt and dirt.(Fox Sports)(9-18-2009)

Compton may not finish out season? UPDATE Team plans to run all races: There may be trouble brewing for Truck Series driver Stacy Compton and his Wyler Racing team.
