If you’re a NASCAR fan, then you’ve probably got an opinion on some of the issues going on within the sport.

How about the COToday, or maybe “Rowdy” Busch, or why Dale Jr. isn’t fulfilling what his fans expect from him, or ?

The pay is nonexistent, but you’ll get a chance to have your articles read by hundreds of other racing fans.

And who knows, it might lead to something bigger and better. Several people who have worked for us here at the MotorSportsNews.Net(work), and at my previous website StockCarFans have gone on to bigger and better things as a result of the exposure they received while writing articles for us.

Erik Darnell Replacing Bobby Labonte In No. 96 For Seven Races

Due to a lack of sponsorship from Hall of Fame Racing, Yates Racing is putting Roush Fenway development driver Erik Darnell in the seat of the No. 96 for seven of the final 12 events. The move was announced in a press release Monday, with Darnell jumping on board for races at Atlanta, Loudon, Kansas, Talladega, Texas, Phoenix, and Homestead. The rookie has never made a start at the Sprint Cup level and has been running a limited schedule in the Nationwide Series this year, collecting a pole and two top 5 finishes in just ten starts in Roush Fenway Racing’s No. 6 Ford.

The move is likely an audition for Darnell’s future, as no firm plans have been announced for the driver in 2010 while Roush Fenway’s other “young guns,” Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Colin Braun, have been linked to full-time rides in the Nationwide Series. Some extra financing has given him the edge over that duo for now, as longtime sponsor Northern Tool + Equipment is coming on board to sponsor Darnell in two of these seven events. Academy Sports & Outdoors, a former sponsor for Labonte, has signed up for at least three others — including for his Cup debut race this Sunday at Atlanta.

“Racing in the Cup series is every driver’s goal,” the 26-year-old said Monday. “The Cup series is where the best of the best compete and I am looking forward to racing against those guys. I’m excited that Northern Tool and Equipment will be able to make the jump with me and that Academy Sports and Outdoors has agreed to sponsor me as well. I am confident that this team can give both of these great sponsors good runs in these upcoming races.”

In the meantime, Labonte’s future remains unclear although sponsorship from Ask.com and DLP will put him in the seat for the other five races this season: Richmond, Dover, Fontana, Charlotte, and Martinsville. At the beginning of the season, Hall of Fame Racing left their shop, sold their equipment, and “partnered” with Yates Racing to put Labonte in the No. 96 with the sponsorship money they had in place. However, that agreement opened the door to other drivers taking over the ride if additional funding never came through for races in which funding was never raised.

“This is a move that will be beneficial to Yates Racing surviving this difficult economic time,” said Bobby Labonte. “Of course, I’m disappointed that the sponsorship environment is so challenging right now, but I intend to make the most out of the remaining races that I’m behind the wheel for Ask.com, DLP and Hall of Fame Racing.”

There’s no word on what will happen with Hall of Fame and its sponsors for 2010, although a change in “partnership” appears likely. Labonte is also a free agent following the end of this year.

It’s Official: Harvick and RCR Together Again In 2010

Garage talk of Kevin Harvick moving from RCR to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2010 was squashed Monday by a press release stating the driver would be back to honor the final year of his contract. In a joint press release, owner Richard Childress announced the sponsor and driver package of the No. 29 would stay intact for next season, with Harvick remaining behind the wheel of the Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet as the team looks to right the ship of a dismal 2009.

“Rumors about Kevin not driving for RCR next season have been flying around the garage area and in the media,” Childress said in a press release. “We want to put the rumors behind us by stating together that Kevin will drive RCR’s No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevrolet for the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. RCR continues to work on the overall performance of the No. 29 team, like we are with all of our teams, and the plan is to end the season on a high note. Kevin and the No. 29 team are also preparing for next season with the goal of making a run at the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.”

“While the 2009 season has not been what any of us have wanted, Richard and I are both committed to improving the performance of the No. 29 team,” Harvick added in that same release.

The team has had a miserable 2009, with Harvick scoring just 3 top 10 finishes in 24 starts, leaving him 24th in the point standings after Bristol. What’s worse, the car that once was the No. 3 driven by the late Dale Earnhardt has led just once this year for nine laps; if that holds, it’s the fewest laps led for RCR’s primary car since Childress himself drove it back in 1976.

Wave Energy Drink Sponsoring Carpentier, Tommy Baldwin Racing’s No. 36

Looks like Patrick Carpentier will have a few more chances to drive races to their completion this season after all. In a press release Monday, Wave Energy Drink was announced as the sponsor for Carpentier and the No. 36 Tommy Baldwin Racing Toyota for the next six weeks. Initially signed to start and park the unsponsored car, the Canadian is now expected to run the race to its completion for each event the new funding is in place.

The road racing ace and 2008 Sprint Cup rookie finished 40th at Montreal this Sunday, missing a shift in Michael Waltrip’s No. 99 NAPA-sponsored Toyota. The 38-year-old has a best finish of 11th this year, driving Waltrip’s No. 55 at Infineon this June; however, his best run for the underfunded TBR team is 37th at Pocono this July.

It’s Official: Brad Keselowski to Penske’s No. 12 in 2010

The worst kept secret in the garage has now been made official by Penske Championship Racing.

On Tuesday, PCR announced that Brad Keselowski, currently driving the No. 88 Chevrolet full-time in the Nationwide Series for JR Motorsports, will drive the No. 12 Dodge full-time in the Sprint Cup Series in 2010. In addition, Keselowski will also drive a full season in the Nationwide Series for Penske next season, apparently as a teammate to Justin Allgaier.

One of the sport’s marquis free agents after his upset win at Talladega turned heads in April, Keselowski is now overjoyed at the opportunity to drive full-time in the Sprint Cup Series in a car he initially turned down at the end of 2008. Back then, he wasn’t convinced the team was the right place for him to develop; but after significant improvements across the board for the Dodge organization this season, he appears raring and ready to jump on board.

“Penske Racing is one of the top teams in all of motorsports, and I am honored to join Roger Penske’s organization and compete for wins with his Cup and Nationwide Series teams,” he said in a press release. “This is a great opportunity for me to continue competing in the Nationwide Series and to run my first full season in the Cup Series with a strong and experienced team.”

Team owner Roger Penske is also psyched up for the 2010 season as a result of this move.

“We are very excited to welcome Brad to the Penske Racing family,” Penske said on Tuesday. “Brad has shown terrific success on track the past several years and has quickly established himself as one of the top young stars in racing. He is a proven winner and a welcome addition to our team.”

While a new full-time addition to the Cup Series, Keselowski will not be eligible for the 2010 Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award because he has already run eight races this season. Those races have been run in the No. 25 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, a part-time fifth car for Hendrick Motorsports, and the No. 09 Miccosukee Gaming Chevrolet for Phoenix Racing.

Keselowski will be replacing David Stremme behind the wheel of the No. 12. That pairing has struggled significantly, as Stremme is currently in 31st in driver points with no top 10 finishes for the entire season. His best efforts have been a pair of 13th place finishes at Fontana and the August event in Michigan. According to sources, Stremme has agreed to a buyout of his contract and is officially a free agent heading into 2010.

Three More Crew Members Suspended For Drug Violations

On Tuesday, NASCAR announced that three more crew members have been given indefinite suspensions due to failing drug tests.

On the No. 6 UPS Ford in the Sprint Cup Series, crew member Richard Henninger was suspended for a failed test administered on August 28th. It’s the latest bad news to hit the team this season, which has struggled to just one top 10 finish with third-year driver David Ragan behind the wheel.

The other two suspensions occurred in the Camping World Truck Series. Both No. 99 crew chief Gary St. Amant and crew member Richard Hennessey have also tested positive for a banned substance and have been indefinitely suspended. The No. 99 team has only raced once this season, with Brett Butler behind the wheel at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 20th. Hennessey was caught after taking a test August 27th, while St. Amant’s occurred on the 28th.

St. Amant, Butler’s crew chief, is best known as a short track racer in what used to be the ASA National Tour. After that series folded due to money woes after the 2004 season, St. Amant moved to the Hooters Pro Cup Series with some success. He also has five career starts in the Truck Series, the most recent being last year at Mansfield driving a No. 37 Chevrolet owned by Dwayne Tatman (who owns the No. 99 that St. Amant had been crew chiefing for) that had been purchased from Spears Racing. In those five races, St. Amant was most notable for spinning into a lightpole at IRP in 1995, a fact referenced in a trivia question recently here in the Newsletter.

As is the norm for these releases, NASCAR did not reveal the substance(s) that the crewmembers tested positive for.

Furniture Row No. 78 to Run Special World Vision Scheme at Richmond

On Tuesday, Denver-based Furniture Row Racing announced that they would be running a special paint scheme during the upcoming Chevy Rock and Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway on September 12.

For that race, the car will be draped in the colors of World Vision, which is a Federal Way, Washington-based Christian humanitarian organization. They are best known for their commercials where by calling a 1-800 number (or going to the World Vision website) people can “sponsor” a child for $1 a day. That $1 a day ($365 or $366 a year, depending on leap years) goes toward providing medical care and education for that child. Sponsors get a package with the name and picture of the child that they are sponsoring and communicate with the child via letters.

Furniture Row Racing team owner Barney Visser and his wife, Carolyn, are longtime supporters of World Vision. As a result of that support, they are donating the entire space on their race car to give publicity to the company’s cause.

In addition, World Vision has a contest tied into this sponsorship on their website. The grand prize winner will serve as an honorary crew member for Furniture Row Racing at a race during the 2010 Sprint Cup season. First prize in the contest is a trip to Denver to both tour the Furniture Row Racing shops and have lunch with team members.

World Vision will also have a physical presence at Richmond International Raceway, with free giveaways in a tent near Gate 40.

The #3 returns…to the Truck Series: Richard Childress Racing returns to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the Lucas Oil 200 at Iowa Speedway on September 5 with Austin Dillon making his series debut in the #3 RCR 40th Anniversary Chevrolet Silverado. RCR won the first NCWTS race, at Phoenix International Raceway, and went on to capture the series’ first championship in 1995 with Mike Skinner driving the #3 GM Goodwrench Service Chevy. Skinner won 16 races in two seasons and Jay Sauter would earn four more victories before RCR discontinued the program at the conclusion of the 1999 season. In 129 NCWTS starts, RCR-prepared trucks earned 20 victories, 59 top-five and 85 top-10 finishes. “RCR was fortunate to win the first Truck Series race and the first championship in 1995 with Mike Skinner and it’s great to see the #3 truck back on the track,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “We had a great deal of success with that program, so I’m excited to see what Austin can do. The Truck Series is always very competitive. The series puts on a great show and this should be a great opportunity for Austin.” Dillon, a third-generation NASCAR driver, has already visited Iowa Speedway three times this season. In May, he started seventh and finished 16th after his left-front tire went flat in the opening laps of the NASCAR Camping World Series East-West showdown. The 19-year-old grandson of Richard Childress rallied from last place to finish second in the ARCA RE/MAX Series race in July. In August, he was involved in a mid-race accident and finished 28th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Mike Dillon is Austin Dillon’s father and RCR’s Vice President of Competition.(RCR)(9-2-2009)

McMurray wins a couple of Kart races: The WKA George Kugler/Bridgestone Manufacturer’s Cup Series completed the final day of action at the New Castle Motorsports Park for the Show Hauler Truck Nationals. The 1-mile Indiana circuit hosted a number of exciting races over the weekend with a number coming on Sunday. Nearly half the winners from the day’s action earned their first feature win of the season, including NASCAR’s Jamie McMurray competing in the series during his off-weekend. Another familiar name scored his first big win of his young career, Michael Goodyear – son of IndyCar driver Scott Goodyear in Sportsman category. The TaG Final was a thriller with McMurray leading the way. As the laps wind down, McMurray was able to stretch out to a 1.292-second margin for the victory.(ekartingnews.com)(9-2-2009)

Judge denies request to lift injunction on Mayfield: U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen has denied NASCAR’s request to permanently lift the injunction he issued July 1 that had allowed suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield to race. Mullen released his decision Tuesday, a decision he made on procedural grounds because NASCAR had already filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals, which ordered a stay on the injunction July 24 until the appeal could be heard. A hearing on the appeal is not expected until at least October, and Mayfield is suspended until the appeal can be decided. Because NASCAR had filed an appeal, Mullen said he has lost jurisdiction as far as the injunction. Mullen did state in the order issued Tuesday that because of new factual developments in the case and a new preliminary injunction standard recently introduced by the U.S. Court of Appeals, he would have been inclined to grant NASCAR’s request. In Mullen’s court, the lawsuit is proceeding into the investigation and trial phase, with a trial scheduled to start no earlier than September 2010.(SceneDaily)(9-2-2009)

JR Motorsports looking at 2010 options: JR Motorsports is considering several drivers for its two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams next year, team spokesman Mike Davis said Tuesday, although he declined to identify them. JR Motorsports also has entered the No. 5 car in several races with a variety of drivers, including team co-owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Scott Wimmer and Ron Fellows, and Tony Stewart is also slated to drive before the end of the year. Davis said whether both teams will run full time depends on sponsorship as the organization is currently working on renewals with its sponsors. The organization has not announced any sponsor-driver lineup for 2010. “We have several things in the works for sponsorship, including ongoing discussions with current partners as well as new ones,” Davis said in an email Tuesday. “Obviously, we are considering several drivers for the #88 car, as well as the #5. We anticipate the setup would be similar to this year’s. Dale Jr. intends to run several Nationwide races in 2010, just as he has this year.”(SceneDaily)(9-1-2009)

It marked his fourth ARCA RE/MAX Series race win of 2009 and also allowed the second year ARCA driver to take the ARCA RE/MAX Series point lead from rookie Parker Kligerman. He heads into the next race on the schedule-the ARCA RE/MAX 200 presented by Federated and Belle Tire, leading Kligerman by 55 points in the Championship race.

Lofton finished second at Toledo in May and currently holds the one-lap track qualifying record at Toledo with a 113.493 mph lap around the half-mile short track in October of 2008. Lofton’s main points challengers, Parker Kligerman (-55 points) and Frank Kimmel (-330 points) each have experienced past success at Toledo. Kligerman earned his first of six 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series race victories at Toledo in May and Kimmel is the all-time ARCA RE/MAX Series winner at Toledo with nine victories.

Remembering BP
A 1969 Holman Moody Ford Torino used by Benny Parsons to win the 1968 and 1969 ARCA Championships will be on display at Toledo Speedway on Friday, September 4 as part of the ARCA RE/MAX 200 presented by Federated and Belle Tire race weekend. The car, which looks exactly like it just pulled off the track in 1969, will be displayed in the concourse area and current owner Barry Miller will make a lap around the half-mile Toledo Speedway in the car during pre-race ceremonies.

Parsons holds the distinction of being the only driver who has won championships in both the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

The Nascar Insiders
2011 Could Be A Good Year For NASCAR
In the name of transparency I’ll tell you I’m kind of borrowing this idea from a piece Art Weinstein at Scene Daily wrote addressing how NASCAR can’t match the success of the NFL. Namely I pulled this idea from his comment about the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) being up in 2011.
