Hot Off the Press… NASCAR 2010 Schedule (my way)
by Brian Schultheis

We sit here every year around this time wondering what changes will come when the Sprint Cup Series schedule is released. This year we have been hearing things about races changing dates and speculation about tracks that may get a new date. NASCAR’s commercials use the tag line “where the best prove it” so the schedule should allow the champion to say they are the best. Read more and see the schedule at motorsportsnews.net/archives/4032

Welcome to new writer Brian Schultheis!!

Angelelli-Frisselle Win Rolex Montreal 200
The four-race “Solid Is Lightning Fast” summer tour of the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series ended just the way it started – with a stellar victory by Max Angelelli and Brian Frisselle in the No. 10 SunTrust Ford Dallara of Wayne Taylor Racing during Saturday’s third annual Montreal 200. With the victory, the SunTrust team, which started the day 14 points behind the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Lexus Riley of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas, is now tied for second in the championship, five points behind the No. 99 Pontiac of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty. Angelelli crossed the finish line 61 seconds ahead of the No. 12 Penske Porsche, while the No. 99 team finished third, another nine seconds back. Just two races remain on the schedule – at Miller Motorsports Park outside Salt Lake City, and Homestead Miami Speedway. Meanwhile, for the 25-year-old Frisselle, it was the second consecutive Rolex Series victory at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the fourth of his career. He won here last year, co-driving with Mark Wilkins in the No. 61 AIM Autosport Ford Riley, and backed that up with his solid piece of driving in wet and dry conditions over the first 35 laps today.

Daytona 500 Schedule Changes
Daytona 500 Qualifying, which secures the prestigious front row for the 52nd annual Daytona 500, will be part of a tripleheader day of racing on Saturday, Feb. 6, joining the 32nd annual Budweiser Shootout and Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 during Speedweeks 2010. Daytona 500 Qualifying, which is traditionally scheduled on the Sunday prior to the Daytona 500, will kick off activities on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1:05 p.m. on FOX, followed by the season-opening Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 for the ARCA Racing Series at 4:30 p.m. on SPEED, and the Budweiser Shootout at 8:10 p.m. on FOX. .

Keselowski says announcement will come soon: Brad Keselowski remained noncommittal this weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on his future in NASCAR, though he did say an announcement on his plans will come “shortly.” Keselowski, a full-time Nationwide Series driver for JR Motorsports and a part-time Sprint Cup driver for Hendrick Motorsports and Phoenix Racing, is rumored to be joining Penske Racing in 2010 – perhaps running both series full time for the team. Keselowski has said he wanted to drive full time in both series, and those plans remain in place. “I’m confident that I will run full time in both series next season,” he said. If he joins Penske, he could be a teammate to Justin Allgaier in the Nationwide Series. Allgaier said Saturday he told Penske officials he didn’t want to know about the team’s plans until they were official.(SceneDaily)(8-31-2009)

Chase clinch scenarios heading to Atlanta: #14-Tony Stewart, #48-Jimmie Johnson, and #24-Jeff Gordon have each clinched a spot in the 2009 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. That leaves nine spots left to be had – and more than nine drivers who want one of them. Mathematically, eight of those spots can be clinched at Atlanta. Realistically, only three likely will. Any driver who leaves Atlanta with a 196-point lead over 13th-place will clinch a Chase spot. Furthermore, any driver with a 162-point lead over 13th-place will need only to start Race #26 at Richmond to clinch.
Currently, #11-Denny Hamlin, in fourth place, has a 230-point lead on 13th – meaning he can lose 34 points and still clinch. Put simply, if Hamlin finishes third or better, fourth and leads at least a lap or fifth and leads the most laps at Atlanta, he will clinch a Chase spot.
#99-Carl Edwards, in fifth, is 199 points ahead of 13th and can lose three points to that position. Though there are numerous possibilities for Edwards to clinch, only an Atlanta win will guarantee it.
#2-Kurt Busch, in sixth, holds a 192-point lead over 13th. He needs to gain four points to clinch. Like Edwards, there are a number of ways for that to happen, but only a win on Sunday would guarantee a clinch.
Those drivers currently in position seventh through 11th can mathematically clinch – but the scenarios are almost too far-fetched for it to happen. #39-Ryan Newman needs to gain 84 points over 13th, #16-Greg Biffle needs 75 points, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya needs 132 points; #5-Mark Martin needs 136 points; and #9-Kasey Kahne needs 144 points.(NASCAR PR)(8-31-2009)

The competitor in Matt Kenseth felt the joy of victory from winning both 50-lap feature races at Madison International Speedway Sunday. The father in him, felt disappointment for his 16-year-old son, Ross, who finished second and sixth to earn second place overall in the rain-delayed Kenseth vs. Kenseth competition. “I want my son to be happy more than I care about my own happiness,” Matt Kenseth said. “I wish he was a little happier after the race, but he still finished second and sixth, he did really well. I know he’s a little disappointed because he always wants to win as well, but he did a really good job and it was a pretty fun event.”.(Wisconsin State Journal)(8-31-2009)

IndyCar owners support moving up Indianapolis 500 start time: The Indianapolis 500 will return to its more traditional start time — 11 a.m. — if some influential IndyCar Series team owners have a say in it. The leaders of Team Penske and Andretti Green Racing said Saturday they support a change back to the earlier start time to help the event attract NASCAR drivers, which they figure would boost television ratings for the 500. Currently, the 1 p.m. start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway does not allow enough time for drivers to complete the 500 miles and then fly to Concord, N.C., for the Sprint Cup Series night race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Team Penske president Tim Cindric brought the subject up in an owners meeting held with Indy Racing League officials prior to the race at Chicagoland Speedway. “It’s worth one (ratings) point, at least,” Cindric said after the meeting.(Indianapolis Star)(8-30-2009)

Nationwide COT to be run 4 times in 2010: NASCAR Nationwide Series teams will run the new car in four events in 2010, beginning with the July race at Daytona International Speedway and then race it about once a month in a slow debut for the model. Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash says that series officials handed teams the rule book for building the new car following a recent series of meetings with owners and fabricators. Balash said those meetings helped the sanctioning body finalize some steps of the process, while others are still in the works. The series will use tapered spacers at all events, abandoning the usage of restrictor plates to harness horsepower at superspeedways. A tapered spacer serves the same purpose as a restrictor plate, but it is a thicker device. “We still have to finalize a couple of things on the overall schedule before we can announce what tracks we’ll be on, but our goal is to have the teams race the new car once a month for four months and then we’ll stay away from that last month with the last three races leading into the championship for the Nationwide Series,” he said. Balash added that the four events will all be on ovals, but that it will be a diverse group to help the teams.(SceneDaily)(8-29-2009)

Nationwide Series Race Recap
By Phil Allaway

Edwards takes Advantage of Ambrose’s Error to Win in Montreal

On Sunday, Carl Edwards ran up front for most of the race in Montreal, running in the Top 10 and generally staying out of trouble. However, he didn’t really have anything for Marcos Ambrose.

Until the last lap.

During a hectic green-white-checkered finish, Edwards strongly pressured Ambrose, who had dominated the Nationwide Series weekend at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Coming to the last chicane, Ambrose took a very defensive line on the inside. This put him off line for turn 14, the second part of the two-turn finish. Ambrose bounced off the curb and hit the rumble strips, scrubbing off speed and allowing Edwards to skitter by to win the drag race to the finish line in the NAPA Auto Parts 200 Presented by Dodge.

After the race, Edwards was both surprised and elated with his victory, the first for him on a road course in NASCAR’s Cup and Nationwide divisions after his 22nd career start.

“I just gave it everything I had on that last lap,” he said. “I thought the whole time Marcos was going to get away with this thing, and [then] he just made that one mistake through the curves at the end and gave me the chance to get by.”

Ambrose, who led a race-high 60 laps on Sunday, had to settle for second.

“I feel pretty devastated, because I let my boys down,” he said after the third straight race in which he came up short on the Canadian street course (see Stat Of The Week below for more on those mishaps). “We came here to win, and anything less than that was a disappointment.”

But if it wasn’t for Mother Nature, perhaps Ambrose would be singing a different tune this Sunday night as for a second straight year, rain wreaked havoc on the final outcome of the race. When a torrential downpour passed by with 13 laps to go, NASCAR eventually brought the field down pit road, necessitating a brief red flag so that teams could change to rain tires and equipment (wiper blades, rain lights, etc.)

Once the changes were complete, the tone of the race quickly transformed from slightly frantic to “insane,” with three cautions and a handful of accidents in the final 10 laps that tore up nearly half the field. Edwards, who was in the Top 5 during this time, was jostled around on each double-file restart following a caution, even getting pushed into the grass and nearly spinning out in the Virage Senna (Turns 1 and 2) on the green-white-checkered while diving under Canadian Tire Series star Andrew Ranger for second. The two cars touched, but Edwards recovered from the near-spin, passing Ranger and continuing on towards Ambrose — although the rest of the field wasn’t so lucky. In slowing up to avoid the accident, Kyle Busch was turned from behind and a 10-car wreck ensued which jumbled up much of the final finishing order. Eventually winding up 10th after a furious comeback over the final five miles, a distraught Busch climbed out and entered the hauler without initially speaking with reporters.

“That was a really tough way to end a long, long day,” he said after cooling his jets for a bit. “We got banged around a good bit out there today, but still we were looking like we had a shot at winning this thing at the end. [On the green-white-checkered restart] they got bunched up in front of me. We had to check up, and got spun from behind. It’s disappointing, to say the least.”

Following Edwards and Ambrose was Ranger, who drove the race of his life in leading 10 laps behind the wheel of the No. 11 Ridemakerz Toyota for CJM Racing. Crowd favorite son Jacques Villeneuve, in the No. 32 for Braun Racing, was fourth while Brad Keselowski survived two spinouts to round out the top 5.

Tony Raines finished a surprising sixth for Front Row Motorsports. In seventh, despite smoking heavily at the finish due to contact with Alex Tagliani on the final restart, was Jean-Francois Dumoulin in the No. 23 Mahindra Tractors Chevrolet for R3 Motorsports, the best ever finish for the team. Stephen Leicht finished eighth, followed by Brendan Gaughan and Busch to round out the top 10.

Edwards’ victory closes the margin between himself and Kyle Busch to 192 points with ten races to go. Brad Keselowski remains in third, 90 behind Edwards and the only other driver with a realistic shot at the championship. Jason Leffler, who finished 29th, remains fourth, with Steven Wallace (despite wrecking multiple times) jumping to fifth. Justin Allgaier falls one place to sixth after crashing out, followed by Jason Keller. Brendan Gaughan is up one place to eighth in points, with Mike Bliss in ninth. Michael McDowell, who finished 11th despite driving an oval track car for K Automotive Racing, maintains the tenth spot.

This year’s event at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, lengthened to 76 laps due to the GWC finish, will go down in history as the longest Nationwide race ever run. Thanks to the rain and the road course record 11 cautions, the race took three hours, 49 minutes, and 19 seconds. That barely eclipses the three hours and 48 minutes set at Gateway International Raceway in the inaugural Gateway 300 in July, 1997 to steal the mark.

This weekend’s events will also be remembered for all the rain. The only time in which the Nationwide teams ever actually ventured onto the track on slick tires was during the race (and only for the first 61 laps), as the only practice session was run on rain tires. Qualifying, likely against NASCAR’s preference, was conducted in the rain on Saturday afternoon after the Grand-Am race, resulting in a greatly jumbled grid. It was the first ever official qualifying session for a NASCAR points race held in the rain.

Nationwide News ‘N’ Notes
by Tom Bowles

- Brad Keselowski admitted this weekend he won’t be back in the No. 88 JR Motorsports car next year, as his future ride with Penske Racing creates a manufacturer conflict. As for who’ll drive in 2010, Kelly Bires remains the top rumored replacement. Talk about a clear frontrunner … no other name is even making the rounds, and the driver reportedly had a birthday party this past week at Dale Jr.’s Whiskey River bar in Charlotte. No word on if he actually signed the deal there …

- ESPN announcers mentioned on the broadcast NASCAR is looking to add a second Nationwide race in Canada as early as 2012. However, don’t expect the Cup Series to make the trip without sufficient rain tires. With the expense of foreign travel, the sanctioning body will refuse to run a points-paying race in which Mother Nature could keep its teams in the area for several extra days.

- It just wasn’t to be for Quebec native Patrick Carpentier this weekend. Driving Michael Waltrip’s No. 99 Toyota, the Canadian came out last in a weird qualifying session where rain, fog, and a wet track made it impossible for him to put up a competitive time. Starting 40th, he used pit strategy to work his way through the field but then had perhaps the most embarrassing moment of his career when he downshifted down a straightaway while gaining speed. The mistake quickly cooked the engine, leaving the NAPA car stranded in the garage in 38th.

Carpentier still plans to run a limited Cup series schedule for Tommy Baldwin’s No. 36 the rest of the year.

Edwards wins at Montreal: #60-Carl Edwards won the NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve by passing #47-Marcos Ambrose coming off the last turn on the last lap when Ambrose lost control of his car in the corner. Ambrose had dominated the race, leading 60 of the 74 laps. #11-Andrew Ranger finished third. The rest of the top 10: #32-Jacque Villeneuve, #88-Brad Keselowski, #34-Tony Raines, #23-Jean Francois Dumoulin, #29-Stephen Leicht, #62-Brendan Gaughan, and #18-Kyle Busch. The race was halted on lap 60 when it began to rain. NASCAR had teams switch over to rain setups and they finished the race on rain tires. There were a record 11 cautions for 31 laps and 7 lead changes among 4 leaders. The race took 3 hours, 49 minutes, 19 seconds, the longest in Nationwide Series history, and the average speed was just 53.869mph.

Keller a free agent for next year: Jason Keller has declared himself a free agent after his Baker Curb Racing team learned recently that its sponsor would not return to the #27 Ford for 2010. Kimberly-Clark said it was moving to the JTG Daugherty Racing Sprint Cup Series team next year, leaving a sponsorship void for Baker Curb. “Their scheme of things changed a little bit, from the K-C side,” Keller said. “They’ve been a great sponsor of mine, on and off, the last several years. A lot of the personnel changed, and their whole sponsorship package [changed], what they thought they needed.” That leaves Baker Curb looking for a sponsor – and Keller looking for a ride. He said Saturday he’s already talked to other prospective team owners, in case Baker Curb can’t keep him. (SceneDaily)(8-30-2009)

Gaughan finishes second in Grand Am race: While many believed that a NASCAR driver could end up on the Grand-Am podium earlier today in Montréal, it may not have been the one that they expected. In just his first Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series start, Rusty Wallace Racing’s Brendan Gaughan teamed with TRG and veteran road racer, Andy Lally, to capture a GT class runner-up finish in today’s Montréal 200 at the legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. After qualifying the #66 South Point Casino Porsche GT3 in the tenth position, Gaughan completed the first half of the event, before handing the wheel off to his teammate.(RWI PR)(8-30-2009)

Carl Edwards steals win on last lap at Montreal! Carl Edwards and Marcos Ambrose were teamed in a Daytona Prototype entry for the Grand Am event yesterday at Montreal. Unfortunately, on the warm up lap, Edwards wrecked the car into the outside wall, resulting in no race for the duo. Today, in the NNS event, it was Ambrose leading the field for 60 of the 76 laps, only to make a last lap, last corner mistake, enabling Edwards to capitalize, take his #60 to victory, and top it off with a back flip in international territory.Ambrose had the pole for today’s event, with Carl Edwards starting alongside. The Aussie Ambrose would lead the field through cautions for fluid on track, and debris, before a yellow came out on lap 18 for the #99 Patrick Carpentier stopped on track. Six laps later caution came out for a major incident in Turns 6 and 7 involving the #20 Brad Coleman, #23 Jean Francois Dumoulin, #81 Alex Tagliani, and #88 Brad Keselowski. Lap 27 had another wreck in Turns 8 and 9 with #5 Ron Fellows, #12 Justin Allgaier, and #18 Kyle Busch as the victims. Many other competitors were off track numerous times, but without bringing out the yellow. Read more (THL)

The 21-year-old out of Cambridge, Ont., took control of the race when he slipped inside of Kerry Micks in the hairpin turn on the ninth lap of the race. From there, he went on to build a lead of over five seconds in his Schick-sponsored Chevrolet before the caution flag waved on Lap 22 to set up an attempt at a green-white-checkered finish.

On the restart, the front of the field got stacked up as they entered Turn 3. As a result, the car of Scott Steckly ended up on its roof after making contact with Don Thomson Jr. Once the dust cleared, the cars were brought down pit road and the red flag was displayed which ended the event. The race was scheduled for 23 laps or 75 minutes leaving just the one opportunity to finish the race under green.

It was Fitzpatrick’s first win of the season and the fourth in his series career. He last won on June 15, 2007 at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont.

Points leader Andrew Ranger was able to clear the incident in Turn 3 and finish second. DJ Kennington, who held down second place in the closing laps, was not as fortunate. He got turned around in the fray and blended back into the field in the fourth position which is where NASCAR officials determined his finishing position to be.

After winning the first three road-course events of the year, Ranger was foiled in his bid to win all four road-course races on the 2009 slate. A season ago in this event, Fitzpatrick led much of the race before a late-race bobble allowed Ranger to take the win.

Kerry Micks led the first eight laps of the race and closed out the race in third place. Mark Dilley finished fifth equaling his season-high finish.

Ron Beauchamp Jr., Pierre Bourque, Jeff Lapcevich, Daryl Harr and Jarrad Whissell rounded out the top 10.

The race was slowed three times due to caution for a total of six laps. The race lead changed just one time between two drivers.

In the point standings, Ranger expanded his lead on Kennington by 10 points and now has a 134-point lead heading into the final three race of the season. Beauchamp and Steckly, in third and fourth, respectively, are right on Kennington’s heels.

In qualifying on Saturday, Alex Tagliani picked up his second straight series pole award after winning the pole two weeks ago at Quebec’s Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. In today’s race, Tagliani was knocked out of the race after just 11 laps due to mechanical problems.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 takes a weekend off before heading to Barrie Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 12 for the Torbram Electric 300 presented by The Source.

With Brad K., Hendrick Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose
This past weekend it was all but confirmed that Brad Keselowski would make his way to Penske Racing next season most likely replacing the struggling David Stremme. This came after a season of speculation about Keselowski’s future with JR Motorsports and Hendrick Motorsports.
