Yeley Injured In Sprint Car
Former NASCAR driver J.J. Yeley reportedly suffered three broken vertebrae during a crash at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. on Saturday night. Yeley was competing in a race in the Sprint Bandits Series at the half-mile dirt Lakeside track when he was involved in a wreck early in the feature event. Yeley’s car flipped in Turn 1, said Lakeside owner Marc Olson. The flip did not look severe but Yeley complained about neck pain. Yeley was transported to a local hospital late Saturday night. From there, he was transported back to North Carolina. Yeley’s flip was the third of the feature. Another former NASCAR driver, Bryan Clauson, was involved in the second flip but was uninjured. Clauson returned and salvaged 12th-place finish.

Busch Donates Money For Guitars
On a rare Sunday off, Kyle Busch ended up in Nashville, lending his time and name to a lower-tier racing series. After the backlash from his smashing of the guitar trophy following June’s Nationwide race at Nashville Speedway, he was determined to prove he meant no disrespect to the music industry. So he quietly donated some money to the Nashville Alliance for Public Education to provide 150 guitars to two area high schools that will create “Les Paul Memorial Guitar Labs” in honor of music icon Les Paul, who died earlier this month. “I didn’t know a lot about music, to be honest, but (the guitar smashing) kind of helped me realize how many people were really passionate about music,” Busch said. “What’s neat about this deal is that there are kids that are just as passionate about music as I am about racing, and we get to give these kids an opportunity … to pursue their passion.”

Bristol Ratings Up
ESPN says its coverage of last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway and ESPN2’s coverage of the Nationwide Series race at Bristol drew increased ratings over last year for both events. It’s the second consecutive week for an increase. ESPN earned a 3.8 final national household coverage rating from Nielsen Media Research for Saturday night’s Sharpie 500 Cup race, an 8.6 percent increase over the 3.5 rating ESPN earned for the 2008 race. This year’s event averaged 5.323 million viewers. ESPN2 earned a final national household coverage rating of 1.5 for last Friday night’s Food City 250 Nationwide race, a 7.1 percent increase over the 1.4 ESPN earned for last year’s race. This year’s race averaged 1.956 million viewers.

Biffle’s Team Captures Tissot Pit Road Award in Bristol
Greg Biffle’s team won the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Saturday night’s (Aug. 22) NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. It was the fifth victory of the season for the No. 16 crew, which remains in first place in the Tissot standings. The crews for Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are tied for second with three wins each. Biffle’s No. 16 Ford Fusion spent the least amount of time on pit road – 214.601 seconds — during the 500-lap race at the world’s fastest half-mile oval. The quick pit stops helped Biffle to a fourth-place finish in the Sharpie 500.

Steve Addington Named Best Crew Chief of the Race
Steve Addington, crew chief for the No. 18 M&M’s Toyota driven by Kyle Busch, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Saturday night’s Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Addington-led #18 team provided Busch with flawless execution all night, running in the top-five, but it wasn’t until Lap 433 that Busch claimed the top spot from Michael Waltrip. Following a successful pit stop during a caution on lap 423, that Waltrip chose not to come in for, Addington shot his driver out to the front of the pack, never to look back. After a late race battle with Mark Martin, Busch prevailed and took home the coveted Sharpie 500 win.

Ken Schrader – 5 races in 6 days: Former Sprint Cup driver, Ken Schrader, on track to race in at least 100 events this year – a pace he’s been on for the last 30 years – the Fenton, Missouri favorite will add five more next week, including ARCA RE/MAX Series events at Toledo Speedway (Friday, September 4) and the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile-dirt (Monday, September 7). “Yah, I get tired,” said Schrader, “but I never get tired of it.” That’s a good thing because Schrader’s itinerary next week is going to keep him hopping from Wednesday through Monday. It starts at Macon Speedway (Illinois) Wednesday night where Schrader is scheduled to race a modified on the tight, high-banked Macon dirt bullring. “Thursday night I’m going to bond with Drager (ARCA president Ron Drager),” added Schrader. And that’s because Schrader will head from Macon to Toledo Speedway for Friday night’s ARCA RE/MAX 200 presented by Federated and Belle Tire. Schrader is a four-time winner at Toledo with victories in ‘97, ‘04, ‘05 and ‘06. From Toledo, Schrader will steer west to his own I-55 Speedway in Pevely, Missouri where he’ll climb in his dirt late model for more short-track fun Saturday night. On Sunday, it’s off to Eagle, Nebraska to race a dirt modified. Schrader will wrap things up Labor Day Monday at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds where he’ll race in the ARCA RE/MAX Series Southern Illinois 100.(ARCA PR)(8-26-2009)

HANS Performance Products has been trackside the past few days investigating the counterfeit HANS Post Anchor problem reported earlier. COO Gary Milgrom has been focused on circle track racing. “I must have seen about 150 helmets and exchanged over 50 sets of counterfeit anchors,” said Milgrom. He continued, “On the whole, I’ve not had to touch any Simpson, Bell, Arai or Stand21 helmets they’ve already been fitted with genuine HANS Post Anchors.” Simpson, Bell, Arai and Stand21 have had substantial long-standing relationships with HANS Performance Products. They are among the 200 authorized dealers throughout North America that receive direct factory support.(HANS)(8-26-2009)
