Track Trash - Thunder Valley

When you see Scott Speedo qualify in 3rd place, and Dave Blarney start in 4th place, one begins to wonder how quickly they will drop like a rock, and where they will finish.

Speedo takes the cake with a 15th place finish, and Blarney ended up last…in 43rd place.

Perhaps we can equate this to the equipment they are driving……and that Prism Motorsports (there’s that unknown name again) might be considered as a ’start and park’ team.

Maybe not: Bristol used to be a bull ring. Wait ten laps and there’d be a wreck. Ten years ago I watched The Man in the Black Car punt TexasTerry out of the way, and remember walking back to the car sort of ashamed at what I had witnessed. Now we have two-wide racing, but may have lost some of the glamour of ‘Bristol’ in the process. If you ask me, going 50 laps at Bristol without a wreck is b-o-r-i-n-g, but sometimes that’s the price you have to pay for becoming ‘modern’. I’m sorry, but I wish the old Bristol was still with us. Bring back the beatin’ and bangin’, the hot tempers, and the thrill of being in Thunder Valley.

Bradski: Sounds like he’s about ready to sign a contract with Penske for next year. This would bump Stremme outta the 12 car. For Bradski’s sake, I sure hope Penske continues on the rebound. They sunk sooo low, but now seem to be getting their act together. Kurt is sort of the weather-board. If he’s genuinely smiling, things are going good. If he has that smirky smile on his face, he’s just trying not to open his trap and blast the boss.

Saddleburns: OK, they just made a crew chief change on the 19 car. As if this is gonna make any kind of difference. Elliott showed promise early in his career, but has allowed himself to be labeled a “C” level driver. They tried to bump him out of his seat early this year, but he threatened a lawsuit based on his enforceable contract. Thus, if any quality driver comes along when his contract ends, he will surely be sent packing.

SirMark: Good grief. This was his 1000th NA$CAR start…and he’s 3rd on the All Time list, behind The King, and (of all people), Mikey Waltrip. I read this on Jayski’s site, but it’s kinda hard to believe that Mikey’s made more starts than the Old Geezer.

Da Race: I guess this is going to be the typical type of racing at the ‘new’ Bristol. Only 10 Yellows and 1 Red, and no Talladega-like “Big One”.

SirMark 2: There were a couple of things I didn’t like about Mark’s race. (a) He let JJ pass him for a couple of laps just to get his extra points for leading. No, JJ didn’t really need the points, so it was a dumb move. This is not supposed to be a ‘team’ sport. (b) He didn’t punt KidKyle out of the way at the end of the race. To me, this solidifies his desire to be a clean racer, but it also tells volumes that he would rather lose a race than punt someone out of the way. Heck, if he woulda nudged TheWildThing, SirMark woulda become an instant hero. The crowd woulda LOVED him. But noooo, SirMark’s too squeaky clean for that……

Bad Hair Day: Gordo and Smoke had a really bad night. Both woulda enjoyed sleeping with a bunch of wild hyenas rather than being on the track and suffering a humiliating night like that one. Gordo ended up in 23rd place, one lap down, and Smoke ended up in 33rd place, 11 laps down. Gordo’s was mostly a handling problem (thanks, Lefarte), and Smoke’s was a faulty radio system.

YoYo: JJ seemed to be putting together perhaps his best night at Bristol, then suffered a tire problem. He went from 1st to 21st, then had to play catch-up the rest of the night. So his 8th place finish was not too shabby, considering what happened to him. (But this is still one of the tracks he has yet to Win at).

Crowd Response: Upon da Kid’s Win, and his subsequent pompous bow to the crowd, they responded with boisterous boooing…..a response fitting for the occasion.

Accolades: Super Kudos to Marcos for a great Top 5 finish. To da Biff for a solid run. To FlyinRyan and Das Kurt for good runs. To Jr, because any Top 10 seems like a Win these days.

Heaps of 3’s all over yer bag of M&M’s,

Agree with you about the old Bristol being better. Maybe a caution every 50-75 laps is best, but the new Brisdull is a disgrace to the once King of All Tracks.
The side by side racing was like a merry-go-round for most of the race. The variable banking has manipulated the competition to even things up. What would people say if the NFL spotted points to make things interesting for the fans?
That’s exactly what the variable banking does, manipulates in the name of “excitement” to watch the cars go around barely able to pass because all the inferior car has to do is hug the steeper banking in the high groove. This fact is indisputable, no engineer would even dare to argue against it. As a matter of fact, the track was engineered to bring side by side “excitement” to Brisdull. What a bonehead decision!

Ashamed of what, The Man in The Black Car, shouldn’t have done it , but SirMark should have?
