Track Trash – Motor City
by Racing Maniac

Another fuel race, but at least this one was a tad exciting at the end.

Jr. Nation was ready to pounce on a W, but it was not to be.

Alas, the dastardly Red Bull Oyota took the thunder from the Big 3, and did it in their home town. There goes the Cat in the Hat’s winning streak in Deeetroit. Read more at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/3995

Vickers Wins Michigan Cup Race
Again, the race came down to a fuel mileage event. Brian Vickers took the lead in the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway with two laps to go when leader Jimmie Johnson ran out of fuel. It was Vickers’ second Sprint Cup victory, the last one coming at Talladega Superspeedway in October of 2006, 87 races ago. Crew Chief Ryan Pemberton made the call and the gamble to stay on the track when others were pitting. “I’ve got to say that, at the moment, it wasn’t what I expected (Crew Chief Pemberton) to do, knowing where we’re at in the Chase, but it was the right call,” Vickers said. “The minute he made it, I had complete faith in it. He hasn’t run me out of fuel yet. Usually when he tells me that we’re going to be two laps short, if I get him two, we’re good. If he tells me we’re four short, and I get him four, we’re good. I have complete confidence in that, and that takes time to build. We’ve gone through this fuel thing I don’t know how many times for me to prove to him what I can save and for him to prove to me how good he is with his math.” — It also was the first Cup race win for car manufacturer Toyota.

Jeff Gordon was second on Sunday and Dale Earnhardt Jr., with his best finish of the year, brought his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet home third. Carl Edwards placed his Ford in the fourth spot and Sam Hornish Jr. had another great run, coming in fifth. Casey Mears finished sixth followed by rookie Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, David Reutimann and Denny Hamlin to round out the top ten.

Similar to the scenario that played out in the June 2009 race, Jimmie Johnson looked to be on his way to victory leading six times for a total of 165 laps. Johnson finished 33rd and dropped to third place in the point standings. — Mark Martin led four times for a total of 26-laps but also fell victim to the fuel mileage issue. He finished 31st and dropped to 12th in the standings. Jeff Gordon moved up to the runner-up spot in the standings behind Tony Stewart. Stewart holds a 284-point lead after finishing 17th in his No. 14 Office Depot Chevrolet.

The Sprint Cup Series moves to Thunder Valley at the Bristol Motor Speedway next Saturday night, August 22nd. The race is scheduled for 6:30 PM / Eastern time and will be broadcast by ESPN television and PRN will carry the radio broadcast.

Stepmother Threatens Mayfields
Catawba Police have confirmed that they were indeed called to Mayfield’s home for a trespassing call. Now, Jeremy Mayfield and his wife confirm to NewsChannel 36 that trespasser is Mayfield’s former stepmother, Lisa Mayfield. He and his wife say Lisa Mayfield was drunk, banging on their door, and they claim she even threatened to kill them. This is just the latest chapter in the saga between Mayfield and his former step-mother with whom he has been trading insults and lawsuits for the past few months. Lisa Mayfield has sued the race car driver for slander. Mayfield, on the other hand, tells NewsChannel 36 he is putting the finishing touches on his wrongful death lawsuit against his step mother. Mayfield has said publicly he doesn’t believe his father committed suicide, as is listed in a 2007 police report, but that he believes his step mother had something to do with this.

Dodge Committed To NASCAR
Dodge President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Accavitti, in his first comments since assuming his new position after its purchase by Fiat SpA in June, pledged Sunday that Dodge will remain in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Dodge currently supports two organizations – Penske Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports – with seven cars in the Cup series. Accavitti obviously was happy that he has two cars in the top eight in points with Penske’s Kurt Busch and RPM’s Kahne. Last year, Dodge put no cars in the Chase For The Sprint Cup. Performance is important to Accavitti, who would make any final decision on whether Dodge remains in the sport.

Sprint Executive Killed
A Sprint Corp. executive died Friday when a boulder crashed through the windshield of his vehicle while he and his family were driving back from Colorado. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s office said the accident happened about 4:40 p.m. Friday in Snowmass Canyon on Colorado State Highway 82 just west of milepost 28, near Aspen. The victim was identified as Thomas Murphy, 45, vice president of corporate brand marketing for Sprint. The Colorado State Patrol said a boulder the size of a briefcase fell off a mountain and crashed through the windshield of the family’s 2007 Chevy Tahoe. Murphy was knocked unconscious and his 11-year-old son Ethan sustained moderate injuries.

Regan Smith To Stay With Furniture Row Racing
Regan Smith, the 2008 Sprint Cup rookie of the year, has agreed in principle to drive the No. 78 car for Furniture Row Racing in 2010, sources close to the situation said on Saturday. Smith is driving a part-time schedule for the Colorado-based team this season, but tentative plans are to run a full schedule next year. Smith was left without a fulltime ride after his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team was shut down due to lack of sponsorship following 2008. He has competed in 11 races this season for Furniture Row, with a top finish of 12th at the July 4 race at Daytona.

Fuel Injection coming to NASCAR?: When NASCAR Sprint Cup director John Darby, a few weeks ago, raised the issue of ‘fuel injected’ racing engines in NASCAR, it raised eyebrows. NASCAR Cup engines are some of the most technically advanced engines in racing, except for the antique carburetors. Every other major form of racing, even ASA, uses fuel injected engines. NASCAR has long shied away from things electronically complicated like electronic fuel injection, for fear with goodly reason that the mechanical wizards on these racing teams might figure out a way to put some tricks in that electronic box. However NASCAR officials are raising the issue to team owners of fuel injected engines possibly in the Truck series as soon as next season, according to one scenario and asking how owners think NASCAR ought to police it. “We think fuel injection is just the right way to go in NASCAR,” Pat Suhy, Chevrolet’s NASCAR field director, says. “And it wouldn’t be that difficult. Every other top racing series uses fuel injection. We could put something together in about a week depending on how simple or complex you wanted to do it and then test it for two months or so, and be ready to go.”(MikeMulhern.net)

First win for #83 since 1988: With Brian Vickers win in the CARFAX 400 at Michigan International Speedway on August 16th, it was only the second ever win for a car using the #83 in Sprint Cup Series history. The last and only other time a car using the #83 won a Sprint Cup race was on March 27, 1988, when Lake Speed got his only career win at Darlington Raceway, running the #83 Wynn’s Oldsmobile.

#98 Crew Member injured, is OK: During a pit stop on lap 149 for tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment at Michigan on Sunday, Ryan McCray, the rear tire carrier for the #98 Menards Ford that Paul Menard drives, was hit by the #33 Chevy of Clint Bowyer, who was pitting in the box directly behind them. As McCray pulled the tire off the right-rear side, and ran behind the #98, the #33 was exiting his pit box; hit the tire McCray was carrying and shot the tire directly into McCray’s knee. McCray finished the stop, but had to be treated by the medical team. McCray was seen and released from the Infield Care Center and will return to action next week.(Yates Racing)(8-17-2009)

Carl Long still looking for ride: Carl Long wonders when he’ll race again, as he washes someone else’s Sprint Cup car. This might be as close as he gets to competing again in NASCAR’s top series. His suspension served for an oversized engine, Long hasn’t found a ride. The only offer was with a Nationwide team that wanted him to pull into the garage shortly after the start of the race. Start and park is what it’s called. His own team isn’t an option. It can’t run until it pays NASCAR $200,000 to cover the fine. Long can’t afford that. Donations from fans in 44 states and four countries cover only 1/10th of the fine. So, Thursday Long was at the Front Row Motorsports shop near Statesville, N.C., washing the #34 car John Andretti drove at Watkins Glen last week. The night before, Long helped put the decals on Andretti’s car for Sunday’s race at Michigan International Speedway, another race Long will not compete. “Basically, the message to me is that NASCAR doesn’t want me in Cup,” Long says during a break about the fine.”(see full story at the Roanoke Times)(8-17-2009)

Kenny Wallace wins Late Model race: Kenny Wallace won Saturday night’s UMP Modified 50-lap special at the I-96 Speedway half-mile dirt track in his yellow and black #36 Jegs Performance Parts car, and he had to come from the back of the pack to do it. Wallace started ninth in the main but was forced to the back of the 20-car field after being pinched to the inside of the track in Turn 1 on the third lap and spinning out. Wallace darted back through the pack and overtook Spring Lake’s Jacob Poel for the lead on lap 23. Wallace ran away from Poel once action resumed from the mandatory fuel stop at the halfway point. He won both the races he entered at I-96. He finished first in the eight-lap preliminary heat in his first start in three years, winning that one in dramatic fashion, too. Wallace started last in the seven-car field but needed just four laps to roar to the front, overtaking Johnny Deyoung for the lead. Wallace, who has raced dirt tracks for four years, last competed at I-96 in 2006.(Michigan Live)(8-16-2009)

NASCAR takes engines to R&D Center: NASCAR has taken the engines of 11 cars in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway to test at its Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. NASCAR periodically takes engines so it can see how much horsepower they produce.
The engines taken were from the Chevy’s of #24-Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports), #14-Tony Stewart (Hendrick), #33-Clint Bowyer (Earnhardt Childress Racing Technologies), #42-Juan Pablo Montoya (ECRT); Toyota’s of: #83-Brian Vickers (Toyota Racing Development), #00-David Reutimann (TRD), #11-Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing); Ford’s of #99-Carl Edwards (Roush-Yates Engines), #16-Greg Biffle (Roush-Yates) and Dodge’s of: #77-Sam Hornish Jr. (Penske Racing), #19-Elliott Sadler (Richard Petty Motorsports).(SceneDaily)(8-16-2009)

The Earnhardt Nation has reason to rejoice. Its driver is starting to act like an Earnhardt again. It was evident last week during an appearance in Atlanta and it showed again on Sunday during the Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway, where he put on a hard charge at the end to finish third, his best effort since Talladega in April.

Returning to the Irish Hills of Michigan, Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Jimmy John’s team started the CARFAX 250 at Michigan International Speedway from the ninth position. With good adjustments throughout the race and a solid day on pit road, the No. 33 team earned a fifth-place finish and gained one spot in the Owner’s Point standings, moving into fifth place. “We struggled a little this weekend with our Jimmy John’s Chevrolet,” said Harvick following the race. “We were a 10th to 15th-place car, but with solid pit stops and adjustments throughout the race, we were able to pull off another top-five finish. Ernie (Cope, crew chief) made the right calls on pit road, especially on the last run when we took on tires and left the fuel out to keep from having extra weight in the car, and the pit crew has really stepped up and had one of their best days all year. They kept us in contention on pit road and it paid off with a solid finish.

Post-race quotes from third place finisher-Kyle Busch-What was your view at the end of the race? “(Brian Vickers) hung on my right rear quarter panel all the way down the front straightaway and gave the win to the 88 (Brad Keselowski) car. He slowed us down so much – he had no idea the 88 (Brad Keselowski) car was coming and the 88 (Brad Keselowski) just drove right by both of us on the outside because Brian Vickers was trying to slow both of us down. It was just stupid. If he would have ran his own line up at the top of the track and I would have won my own line down at the bottom of the track it could have been a battle between us two. Unfortunately, you race with id iots and I guess you’ll have that sometimes, but the NOS Energy Drink Camry was good today, just not good enough. I felt like we had a good handling race car on the long runs but unfortunately there we didn’t have long runs at the end of the race. I’m sure I’m complaining and I’m whining and I’m a cry baby but that’s uncalled for. It’s just stupid. I would have ran my own line instead of just giving it to the third place car in order to battle it out between the top-two, who deserved the win and deserved to battle the race out at the end. He didn’t deserve to win.” Can you move on from this incident? “I don’t know. Ever since Richmond, I’ve had a problem with him (Brian Vickers) racing with him on the race track. This is just another escalation of that. He’ll be upfront tomorrow and I’ll be in the back so we won’t have anything tomorrow.”

Post-race quotes from second place finisher, Brian Vickers.BRIAN VICKERS, No. 32 Dollar General Stores Toyota Camry, Braun Racing Finishing Position: 2nd What happened between you and Kyle Busch on the final lap? “We were racing hard. He (Kyle Busch) was on the inside and I was on the outside. We were racing and 88 (Brad Keselowski) took the high line and got around both of us. I’m frustrated for the Dollar General guys because we should have had a win. I didn’t see him (Brad Keselowski) coming. Kyle (Busch) was crying like a little girl after the race and he came up and was whining because I was racing him so hard. I thought this was racing – I thought this was what we were supposed to do. We raced fine the whole race – I caught him and he let me go, he caught me and I let him go. Then at the end of the race we were racing for the win and he’s crying about it. I don’t know what he wants.” What is your response to Kyle Busch saying what you did in the closing laps was ‘stupid’? “I am so sorry – I forgot it was the ‘Kyle Busch show’. I thought we were racing for a win. I am really sorry for the Dollar General guys. We had a great car. We were too loose on the start of the run – he (Kyle Busch) was better. I thought it was my job to hold him off – apparently not. He came over to the car after we came in and knocked our fender in, which was unnecessary and then started crying like a little baby. I asked if he would just give me a minute to get out and we could talk about it like men. If he wanted to fight – that’s fine with me. As soon as I got out he ran off.

Sheltra Next Up in Trimester Grades……
(8-17-09) – It’s been one of those ‘back-and-forth, up-and-down’ seasons for Indiantown, Florida’s Patrick Sheltra. After a devastating crash in the Daytona opener that left his season/career in doubt, Sheltra shrugged it off and answered with his career-first win on the ultra-challenging Salem Speedway short track in the very next race. After an impressive runner-up run at Rockingham in the third race of the season, Sheltra left the ‘Rock’ with the point lead and a keen eye on the championship. But in the next 10 races that followed, Sheltra seemed to backslide, earning just three top-10 finishes, and only one top-five. Fortunately for Sheltra, the next event takes the ARCA RE/MAX Series tour to the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile-dirt where he finished third in 2007. Sheltra, who honed his skills in dirt late model competition, also finished second on the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds mile-dirt in 2008. Having said this, the Springfield mile-dirt could be just the medicine Sheltra needs to turn his season around just in time for the homestretch. Currently eighth in series points, ARCAracing.com cameras recently interviewed Sheltra during which he gave himself a letter grade, and then told why. For Sheltra’s grade card results, click on the homepage video right.

ARCA Brings Kimmel, Schrader & Host of Rookies to Springfield!

Seven time Allen Crowe 100 winner Frank Kimmel comes to Springfield with a new sponsor and paint scheme in search of a record eighth win at the Illinois State Fairgrounds one mile dirt track on Sunday, August 23 with a host of strong competitors looking to dethrone the former ARCA champ in the 47th running of the Allen Crowe 100. The 47th Crowe 100 is the 14th of 21 races on the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Stock Car Series schedule.

The 47 year old Kimmel dominated last year’s Crowe 100 setting a track record of nearly 110 miles an hour in qualifications and then leading 83 of the laps to capture his seventh Crowe 100 trophy in a season where sponsorship concerns had the new Kimmel Racing team wondering if they would be able to complete the season. Kimmel returns in 2009 with sponsorship from Menard’s as well as a third place position in the 2009 ARCA title chase despite the lack of a victory and remains one of the favorites on both dirt tracks on the ARCA schedule. In a new twist it was announced this week that Kimmel’s son Will had enteredthe47th Crowe 100 to compete against his father.

Returning to his roots and the ‘home’ fans, 54 year old Ken Schrader of Fenton, Missouri won the 1998 Allen Crowe 100 and is still in search of his second 100-mile triumph at Springfield. After spending a number of seasons on the NASCAR Sprint Cup tour, Schrader has returned to the short tracks and dirt tracks running modifieds, late models and ARCA races in lieu of a full-time NASCAR ride. While Schrader has yet to post a win this season, he has three starts in 2009 with one top 5 and 2 top 10 finishes. Schrader picked up two wins in the ARCA series at DuQuoin, coming in 2006 and 2007.

Eighteen-year-old Parker Kligerman of Westport, Connecticut currently leads the ARCA point standings as a development driver for owner Roger Penske. Kligerman has a considerable amount of experience in midget competition and on road courses as well and has made a successful transition to stock cars, winning 5 times in the first 11 races and finishing only once outside the top 10. Trailing Kligerman is 23-year-old Justin Lofton of Westmoreland, California. Lofton won at Talladega and led the ARCA point standings earlier in the year, he now trails Kligerman by 20 markers. Lofton took the lead in the ARCA series temporarily after Pocono but penalties from infractions handed the lead back to Kligerman. Lofton started 34th as a rookie at Springfield last year and was running at the end in 24th

Nineteen year old Joey Coulter of Miami Springs, Florida is 5th in the ARCA standings as a rookie with one pole and 7 top ten finishes in 11 starts for the UNC-Charlotte Engineering student. Greenville, North Carolina’s Craig Goess is 4th in the standings for Eddie Sharp after running several years in Legends cars. Florida’s Bryan Silas is 6th driving again for former ARCA champ Andy Hillenburg, while fellow Floridian Patrick Sheltra, a dirt track veteran, is 8th with one win in 2009. New Jersey’s Tom Hessert has run with the USAC midget and Silver Crown Series and is 9th.

One driver whose status for Springfield was questionable but is now confirmed is Steve Arpin, a dirt track veteran of modified and late model racing who competed last year as a rookie in the USAC Silver Crown Series. Arpin, 7th in the points, was running as a development driver for Eddie Sharp but the team’s sponsorship funding became in doubt earlier in the year. Arpin hooked up with the capable Venturini Motorsports organization and has to be considered dark horse favorite at Springfield.

ARCA has a group of regulars that traditionally make the trip to the Illinois State Fairgrounds, including Michigan’s Brad Smith, Texas’ Ken Weaver, Indiana’s Darrell and Jason Basham and Tennessee’s Ron Cox. However, the two dirt track events also lure many local drivers and even some who will be driving more than one race car during the last weekend of the 157th Illinois State Fair.

Parma, Michigan’s Brian Tyler announced earlier this year he had secured a ride with veteran car owner Doug Stringer for the two dirt events, Tyler is a former track record holder at DuQuoin and finished a strong 3rd at Springfield last year after winning the Tony Bettenhausen the day before. Fellow USAC Silver Crown shoe A.J. Fike of Galesburg is also pulling double duty over the weekend, Fike won the pole at Springfield in 2004 and at DuQuoin in 2007.

Damon Lusk, a former pole sitter at Springfield replaces Mokena, Illinois veteran Bob Strait in the Bill Hendren machine. Hendren has been trying since the 1970′s to win at Springfield. Arenzeville native Mark Littleton also returns for another start on the Springfield mile, as does Springfield’s own Kelly Kovski who ran 9th in last year’s Crowe 100. One driver who will be unable to return is 2006 Crowe 100 winner Justin Allgaier, the Springfield native has moved to the NASCAR Nationwide Series driving for Roger Penske, however Robb Brent fills the seat in the Allgaier machine. Brent has found the Allgaier seat to his liking, as he is currently 10th in the ARCA point chase. Centralia native Joe Cooksey also returns for the 47th Crowe 100.

Forty cars and teams are anticipated filing into the Illinois State Fairgrounds on August 23rd with the practice session for the ARCA machines starting at 9 a.m. Menards Factory pole qualifying is set for 11 with drivers taking aim at Frank Kimmel’s track record of 32.878 (109.496). Bobby Bowsher set the 100-mile track record of 1:08:00.00 (90.000) in 1991. The 100-mile Allen Crowe memorial event is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

Ranger Does It Again
Defends Race Title And Collects Fifth Win In 2009

TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. (Aug. 16, 2009) – Andrew Ranger had to contend with a hungry Anthony Simone but held on to win the GP3R 100 in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 action from the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres (Que.) on Sunday afternoon, successfully defending his race title from a year ago.

Simone, looking for his first series win, stayed right on Ranger’s rear deck lid throughout a green-white-checkered finish before settling for a runner-up finish. Setting up the two-lap dash to the finish line was a red flag caused by Jason Hathaway’s contact with a retaining wall that track officials needed to repair.

It was Ranger’s fifth victory of the season in the No. 27 Walmart/Tide Ford, which establishes a new single-season series record eclipsing Scott Steckly’s four wins of a season ago. It was also Ranger’s fourth win in the last five races, dating back to his triumph at SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C., on July 18.

DJ Kennington finished third for his seventh top-five finish of the season.

Jacques Villeneuve, who had a disappointing result in this series debut on July 11 at Autodrome St. Eustache (Que.), finished the race in the fourth position. He was followed by Ron Beauchamp Jr. in fifth.

Kerry Micks, Jeff Lapcevich, Don Thomson Jr., Joey Hanssen and Kent Nuhn rounded out the top 10.

The race was slowed 3 times for caution for a total of 11 laps. The race was completely restarted after there was contact between J.F. Dumoulin and Robin Buck on the first lap. The race lead changed hands three times involving two drivers.

In the championship point standings, Ranger grew his lead to 124 points over Kennington, who moved into the second-place position. Defending series champion Steckly came into the race second in points, but left in fourth after experiencing transmission problems just 12 laps into the race. He is now 154 points off Ranger’s pace.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is on the track next on Sunday, Aug. 30 at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the AUTOPRO 100 just prior to the NASCAR Nationwide Series event.
