NASCAR Readies For Round Two In New Car
By: Capt. Herb Emory

The opinions concerning the debut of NASCAR’s new racecar continue to be mixed. I don’t think the Bristol performance changed any minds. Fans that didn’t like it before Bristol seemed to hold on to their feelings after the fact too.

Texas To Offer Record Purse
Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage announced today that the upcoming Samsung 500 purse will be in excess of $7 million and rank as the third largest for the entire 36-race NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series season. The total posted awards for the Samsung 500 officially will be $7,253,642 and that purse will only trail the season-opening Daytona 500 ($18,391,423) at Daytona International Speedway and the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard ($9,236,620 in 2006) at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. The Samsung 500 had an increase of $166,466 from the 2006 purse total of $7,087,176, but the bump established a new record for a single-race purse in the history of Texas Motor Speedway.

Bruton Smith To Hall of Fame
When Bruton Smith talks about the roots of stock-car racing, he might as well be talking about himself. Smith was there from the beginning, promoting races in the 1950s at a time when the sport had a small-but-passionate following confined primarily to the South. A half-century later, those roots have spread throughout the country, and Smith has grown right along with them. His groundbreaking influence on stock-car racing has landed him a spot in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. Smith will be inducted into the IMHOF on April 26 along with Jack Ingram, Wayne Rainey, Ray Hendrick, Warren Johnson and Junie Donlavey.

NASCAR expands rear height tolerances for COT: NASCAR will give teams a half-inch tolerance instead of a quarter-inch on the minimum height requirement of the rear of the car during post-race inspection at car of tomorrow [COT] races, Nextel Cup Series Director John Darby told reporters Thursday. #16-Greg Biffle was outside the quarter-inch tolerance after a fifth-place finish at Bristol, but NASCAR won’t penalize him because of the lack of benefit to the car to be that low. Darby also said that although it was procedural measurement with the car of tomorrow, it was never specified in the rulebook. He says NASCAR will continue to explore the minimum height of the rear of the car before making a steadfast rule. Darby also said that the minimum right-side weight was changed from 1,650 pounds to 1,700 pounds. As far as the problems some teams had with broken exhaust pipes, Darby said he expected that to be fixed. “The teams have been very weight conscious through this process,” Darby said. “Most of the exhaust pipe failures that we saw were pipes that were constructed out of material that was much thinner than the pipes on yesterday’s car were. iI should be an easy fix for the teams.”(SceneDaily.com)(3-30-2007)

Hylton plans attempt Talladega in April: #58-James Hylton isn’t ready to let go of the steering wheel just yet. Hylton, 72, who came within a few laps of qualifying for the Daytona 500, wants to give the Nextel Cup Series another try — this time at Talladega Superspeedway in April. “We’ve still got the car we ran Daytona with, the same car,” Hylton said. “We’ve prepared this car for Talladega, which is not a real big jump. Unless something drastic happens, we’ll be at Talladega, because we’re set up to go there.” He’s in talks with the sponsor of that car [Daytona car], Retirement Living TV, to back him again in the April 29 event at Talladega. He had originally hoped to try to make last weekend’s event at Bristol Motor Speedway, but couldn’t get a Car of Tomorrow built in time. Yet the two-time winner and former rookie of the year [1966] on NASCAR’s premier circuit is still buzzing over the publicity generated by his attempt to make the Daytona 500.(NASCAR.com)(3-30-2007)

Bobby Labonte to Drive Grand-Am Rolex Cup Sports Car at Martinsville: #43-Bobby Labonte will give NASCAR fans the chance to see a different kind of race car on the oval at Martinsville this Saturday. Blending the worlds of NASCAR short track racing with the Rolex Series Daytona Prototypes, Labonte will drive Finlay Motorsports’ #19 Z-Line Designs/Mission Residential/Make-A-Wish Foundation Ford Crawford on the track prior to Saturday’s Craftsman Truck Series race. This is the same car Labonte drove in the 2007 Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance race. Following a demonstration run on Martinsville’s .526-mile paperclip-shaped oval, the brilliant orange and black-liveried car will be on display in VIRginia International Raceway’s tent at Martinsville. The car is coming off a top-ten finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The car races in the series enjoyed by several other Nextel Cup drivers, including Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and now-retired Rusty Wallace in their entries at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Fans can examine the car closely meet and the Finlay and VIR teams at Martinsville and again at the Grand-Am Rolex Series VIR 400 April 27-29. Tickets can be purchased for VIR’s major events online at Etix.com or in person at the gate. More info about VIRginia International Raceway at .(VIR PR)(3-29-2007)

Martinsville Goodyear Tire Notes: Both NASCAR series will run the same tire codes at Martinsville this weekend, though the Nextel Cup tires will be branded “Goodyear Eagle,” while the Craftsman Truck tires will be branded “Goodyear Wrangler” . . . this is the first time Goodyear has brought this specific combination of left- and right-side tires to the track . . . Martinsville is the only track at which Nextel Cup teams will run this specific setup of left-and right-side tires . . .however, this right-side code (D-4110) will be run on all four tire positions at the series’ two road course races — Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen International . . . Craftsman Truck teams are scheduled to run this same tire setup at Mansfield in May . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Martinsville. Estimated Pit Window for Nextel Cup cars are every 115-125 laps, based on fuel mileage.(Goodyear PR), see notes, codes and more on my Martinsville Race Info page. Where is Bill Brodrick? who? The Hat Man.. since I get asked about him a few times a month and even have a section for the question in my Racing FAQ’s [#27]….the lastest. He’s been to more Victory Lanes than Richard Petty, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon combined. Officially, Bill “The Hat Man” Brodrick was in charge of public relations for Unocal’s racing division. He’s remembered, however, as the burly guy with a lion’s mane of coiffed hair and beard to match who was in charge of Victory Lane. His celebrations were orchestrated with the finely tuned precision of a symphony conductor. Brodrick was almost always the first person to a winner’s car once it got to racing’s version of the Promised Land, and as a result, he was almost always on television for at least a few seconds. Unocal was bought out in 1997. Although he’d been with the company just a few weeks shy of 29 years, at the end of the season, Brodrick was shown the door. Afterward, he refused to be a “hanger on,” who begs for passes. He operated Tavern at the Bridge in Algonquin, Ill., for four years and then turned it over to his son. “My son talked me into it, and my wife, of course, was on my son’s side,” Brodrick said of his decision to buy the bar. “This place was available, and my son knew it real well. To make a long story short, I bought that saloon and had to go to work. My son runs the business now and it’s doing quite well. It was work. I’d never worked that hard in all my life.” He still handles a few things here and there with the tavern, and he’s also a contract driver for a courier company. Brodrick stays as busy as he wants to be. Read full story on NASCAR.com.(3-29-2007)

NOTE on #4/#09 Owners Points: have confirmed thru the team and NASCAR that the #109 team of James Finch/Phoenix Racing and the #4 team of Larry McClure/Morgan McClure Motorsports have ’switched’ car numbers with Finch now listed as the #4 owner, combing the #109’s Daytona points [160] with the #4 points at Las Vegas [34] for a total of 194 and moving up to 38th on the Owners Points list. The switch was made AFTER California, so the #09 team had one attempt. Been told NASCAR has approved this move. Why would the #4 team do this? Race attempts do not matter if a team is in the top 35 of the owners points, so if the #4 can get in the next two races and get in the top-35 they will be guaranteed a starting spot if the team can stay in the top 35.
My ‘understanding’ of the rules, is that since the #4 is now listed with only 2 race attempts, the team would not get in the race in the case qualifying is cancelled [rain etc] as there are many teams already with three who would get in first. That is how the rule is written, and confirmed with NASCAR.(3-14/29-2007)

Rookie hopes to improve after last year’s debacle
Credit David Ragan for being a good sport. When Tony Stewart ridiculed the Nextel Cup rookie last October by calling him a `a dart without feathers,” Ragan didn’t run away in embarrassment. He instead bid $5,750 to win a pre-race ride with Stewart that guaranteed him a little face time with the two-time series champion.

Down Time: First Open Week Of Season For Series

With the conclusion of two days of testing at Richmond, the drivers and teams of the NASCAR Busch Series can look forward to their first open week of the season. It’s been a whirlwind schedule since mid-January when testing for the new year began at Daytona International Speedway. Since then, the series has tested at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, returned to Daytona for Speed Weeks and the season-opening race before moving on to California Speedway.

Next up was the trek to Mexico City, then a return to Las Vegas followed by races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway before this week’s test sessions at Richmond.

“The teams have been working hard since the weeks before we left for testing in Daytona,” said Joe Balash, NASCAR Busch Series director. “We’ve covered a lot of travel miles and a lot of race miles. Now we’re ready to get some quality time to adjust strategies and programs for the next phase of the season.”

Racing resumes April 7 at Nashville Superspeedway with the running of the Pepsi 300. (NASCAR PR)

Justin Labonte, a former NASCAR Busch Series winner, is back behind the wheel this weekend. Justin’s father, Terry Labonte, will also be participating in the weekend’s festivities. He will be the Grand Marshal of the 150-lap event. He will also drive the pace car for the start of the race. Justin Labonte participates in this weekend’s event as he continues to search for opportunities in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and NASCAR Busch Series. (LR PR) (03-29-07)

Andrew Ranger is switching gears in his motorsports career, confirming on Thursday he will compete in the newly formed NASCAR Canadian Tire Series this spring for Jacombs Racing.

For the past two seasons, Ranger has been competing in the Champ Car series. However, difficulties in securing financial sponsorship for a full season hampered his chances of landing a full time ride in 2007.

“I am extremely fortunate to have P&G and its partners behind me as I take on this new challenge,” said Ranger. “I believe it’s the right opportunity at the right time for my career.

“I raced two years in Champ Car and I liked the series, but it’s very expensive. I need to have a future and I don’t know if there was a future in Champ Car. I’d have to fight (to get a spot on a team) every year and again this year I didn’t have a ride, so I decided to go to NASCAR. I have a great sponsor and I’ll try to win this year.”

“For Andrew, it’s a relief from the financial responsibilities,” said his agent, Alan Labrosse. “People may perceive this as a step back and I wouldn’t argue with that, but sometimes you have to take a half-step back to take three or four steps forward.

“NASCAR has become a very strong North American series and Andrew sees this as an opportunity.”

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series - formerly the CASCAR championship - is set to begin May 26 at Cayuga. The remainder of the 12 race schedule has yet to be announced.

Fellow Canadian Alex Tagliani will enjoy sponsorship support from P&G this season for the three Canadian events in the Champ Car series. The sponsorship is part of the Victory Lap Charity Program, a cross-Canada fund-raising effort on behalf of the Children’s Miracle Network. Now in
its fifth year, the Victory Lap tour raised some $209,000 last year.

Canada’s Ranger moves to NASCAR Canada Series
MONTREAL – Andrew Ranger of Roxton Pond, Que., is jumping to the NASCAR Canada series after two frustrating years on the Champ Car circuit.

And Alex Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., says he has a shot at the Champ Car title after his team, Rocketsports, joined forces with RuSport on Thursday to form a unified power called RSPORTS.

Ranger, 20, one of Canada’s top driving prospects, leaves open wheel racing to begin a new career on the 12-race NASCAR Canada Series, formerly CASCAR, which opens May 26 at Cayuga Speedway Park near Hamilton.
