ISC Pledges Local Control Of New Track
With less than a month left in the 2007 Washington State Legislature session, International Speedway Corp. reiterated its pledge Monday that it won’t go to a site in Washington where the people don’t want it. Wording was put in a second revised version of its funding bill that would require a public referendum from up to a three-county area surrounding where the 1.2-mile, 80,000-seat track would be built. New wording also strengthens the negotiating power of the local jurisdiction, which would own the facility. The public referendum was one of many items discussed Monday during a hearing before the state Senate’s Ways and Means Committee. With its budget due next week and an April 22 deadline looming for the end of the legislative session, the committee took no action on the funding proposal. The proposal calls for ISC to pay at least $180 million of the $364 million project. The rest would be funded by bonds to be paid off by sales taxes and admission taxes generated by the track. Cost overruns would be paid by ISC.
McReynolds: Don’t Expect Biffle Penalties This Week
Larry McReynolds says: “Don’t expect to see a decision handed down this week against Greg Biffle and the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Nextel Cup team because a rear quarterpanel was low, and that’s not something a team would want to have at Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR can’t figure out how it would be a performance enhancement. I don’t look for any penalties this week. You’re going to probably see something next week as this scenario is another part of the learning process with the Car of Tomorrow.
Sponsor Ameriquest Wants Out
Ameriquest has asked to be let out of the final two years of its sponsorship agreement with Roush Fenway Racing and the No. 16 Nextel Cup Ford driven by Greg Biffle, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday. The mortgage company, which had sponsored many of the team’s Busch Series cars in 2006, is in its first year of a three-year Cup sponsorship deal. Roush Fenway Racing will be allowed to replace the sponsor without being in danger of closing the team to get down to NASCAR’s maximum of four Nextel Cup teams, but the organization must be reduced from five to four Nextel Cup teams by 2010.
NASCAR Images Nominated For Emmys
NASCAR Images, the internal production and creative services company of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), has been nominated for two Emmy Awards for the television program Beyond the Wheel. The 2006 Emmy Award nominations from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are for “Live Event Turnaround” and “Camera Work.” Beyond the Wheel was also nominated in the Live Event Turnaround category in 2005. Beyond the Wheel took television viewers inside the sport of NASCAR like no other previous show, turning the NASCAR race experience into a cinematic adventure. The program put fans in the cockpit and into the minds of a race team through a blend of film footage, team radio communication, dramatic music, and exclusive post-race interviews with the most important characters.
New Wood Brothers Web Site
The Wood Brothers/JTG Race Team has undergone an extreme makeover regarding their official team website, located at (www.woodbrothersjtg.com). After months of careful planning, the redesigned site hit the Internet over a week ago in a Beta Test Phase and now is ready for fans and visitors alike to browse the updated offerings. The new design, first and foremost, offers an ease of navigation and flow of information. The news is split into separate team categories for their two NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams, their two NASCAR Busch Series teams and their two NASCAR NEXTEL Cup teams. Featured driver pages focus on the talented lineup, of which includes Ken Schrader, Jon Wood, Marcos Ambrose, Joey Clanton, Stacy Compton, Kelly Bires and Mark Martin.

Germain Racing plans to field two fulltime Nextel Cup teams for Toyota by 2009. Todd Bodine took the first step in that process on Tuesday, testing a Busch Series car at Richmond. Germain Racing will enter Bodine in the May 4 Richmond Busch race in a Camry being built at its new Mooresville, NC, shop. It is the first of 11 Busch events the 43-year-old Bodine is scheduled to enter this season.(ESPN.com)(3-27-2007)
Bodine to add another venue to his Bobsled Challenge: Geoff Bodine. who last year persuaded 10 race car drivers to get behind the cowls of specially made bobsleds and race to raise money for the U.S. bobsled team, is taking his project to Utah Olympic Park. “We’re going to have two,” Bodine said Tuesday from Park City, Utah. “They saw our event and asked us to come out. This is going to be a good venue.” The new event will be staged in December after a World Cup event at the Park City track. The Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge, which relies on Whelen Engineering for substantial sponsorship, made its debut in Lake Placid in January 2006 and was staged again the first weekend of this year. Boris Said, a road-racing expert whose father competed on two U.S. Olympic bobsled teams, has won three of the four races. He was in Park City on Tuesday to test a bobsled that was modified for the new event. Drivers who have raced on the difficult Lake Placid track drove a shortened course on the 20-turn chute and recorded speeds of just over 50 miles per hour. Said drove the entire track at Utah Olympic Park and was clocked around 73 mph, according to John Morgan, a TV commentator for the sport and co-organizer of the Bobsled Challenge. Because of hectic schedules, Bodine so far has been unable to attract a current Nextel Cup star, such as Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordon, to either of the first two runnings of his fundraiser, which will return to Lake Placid the first weekend in January. Still, the races so far have been successful at raising money for increased research and development for the U.S. bobsled team, which excelled in the 2006-07 World Cup season. Steve Holcomb, a native of Park City, won the two-man and overall titles, and Shauna Rohbock, of Orem, Utah, finished second to German women’s champion Sandra Kiriasis. Over the past 15 years, Bodine has raised more than $1 million to help build American-made bobsleds through his Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project.(ESPN.com/AP)(3-28-2007)
Gordon’s shop not ready…Cal Wells helps out UPDATE 2: from Cal Wells III: “I have known the entire Gordon family for decades. Robby’s father drove for me in my early years of off-road racing and Robby has driven for me in off-road and in Indy car. We’ve had our good times and our challenges, been mad at each other, supported each other, but most of all, we’ve remained family friends. He and his sisters along with his mom and dad and step-mom, all good friends. As Robby’s racing organization continues to develop, it is going through what all small businesses go through, a challenging evolution, Rob reached out for some advice but nothing more. I don’t work there, haven’t taken a job there, just helping him out a little bit on a couple of deals he is working on, which if successful will really establish his organization as a force in the garage area. Our relationship works best when I offer supportive suggestions but not for compensation or an obligation from him to follow any of them. As for myself, I am actually working on a couple of opportunities which will hopefully keep me in the sport I so dearly love. Time and hard work will tell.”(3-27-2007)
Schrader testing at Caraway: In preparation for Martinsville, Ken Schrader the #21 Little Debbie Ford decided to test at Carraway Speedway on Tuesday, March 27th. Schrader needs to race his way into the field at Martinsville as the team is not in the top 35 in owners points.(Wood Brothers/JTG Racing PR)(3-27-2007)
COT and Haulers Fact: One of the big controversies about the Car of Tomorrow concerned the race haulers, the 53-foot tractor-trailers teams use to haul cars to and from the track. Last year, when team owners were fighting the CoT concept tooth and nail, one of their prime objections was that the taller CoTs would necessitate wholesale replacement of the pricey trailers. NASCAR insisted that wasnt true. So whats the real story? Newer trailersthose made in the last two yearshave a lowered upper deck floor that accommodates the new, taller cars just fine. But some of the smaller teams that use older trailers have to replace the race tires on their CoTs to get them to fit. For example, BAM Racing, which fields cars for Mike Bliss, has a set of tire innerliners that it puts on Blisss CoT to get it to fit in the trailer. The innerliners, of course, arent as tall as the regular race tires. At least one other team uses production street tires when it loads its CoT. One other footnote about the trailers: The average life expectancy of a NASCAR Nextel Cup trailer is about 3-4 years. At the end of its life cycle, technology has advanced enough that teams want new features and configurations in their trailers.(Ford Racing)(3-27-2007)
Phoenix Fans encouraged to take easy route to the race track: Phoenix International Raceway will again encourage race fans in 2007 to bypass race traffic and “Park ‘N Ride” to the Subway Fresh Fit 500 Nextel Cup Series race on Saturday, April 21. After much success in 2006, the “Park ‘N Ride” program returns to Cricket Pavilion, located just two blocks north of I-10 on 83rd Avenue. All NASCAR fans heading to PIR are welcome to park on Pavilion grounds, from where shuttle services will be provided to the track. Parking and shuttle services to PIR will total just $7 per car. With the green flag dropping on the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at 5:30pm/pt, “Park ‘N Ride” services will be available for 12 hours - from noon on Saturday until midnight - giving all fans an easy way both to and from the track, before and after the race. Guests with PIR-issued parking passes can “Park ‘N Ride” at no charge. Shuttle buses will escort guests to PIR via preferential traffic routes, offering guests an earlier arrival to the facility. Tickets are now on sale for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 weekend at PIR and can be purchased by calling 602-252-2227 or 866-408-7223. In 2006, Todd Nesbit, assistant professor of economics at Penn State Erie, and Russell Sobel, professor of economics at West Virginia University, produced a study that explored how drivers react to having cars so safe that they can generally walk away with no injuries after crashing into a concrete wall or another car at a very high rate of speed. “Based on results of our study, we would project that drivers will drive more recklessly and take more risks while driving the Car of Tomorrow,” Nesbit said.

While NASCAR’s car of tomorrow made its debut at his half-mile Bristol Motor Speedway, Speedway Motorsports Inc. President H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler said he will need to watch the new car at bigger tracks to evaluate it better. An outspoken proponent of the COT, Wheeler said it was a typical Bristol race Sunday even with the new cars, which will be run at 16 races (mostly at tracks a mile and shorter) this year.

Catching up with … LEE WHITE
Lee White, senior vice president and general manager of Toyota Racing Development, USA, recently met with reporters, including Rick Minter of Cox News Service, to give an update on Toyota’s start in Nextel Cup.
On the sharing of information among Toyota teams: “After the Bristol test [on Feb. 28 and March 1], when all of our teams were uniformly not fantastic, Andy Graves [a senior manager for TRD] got all the teams together and they exchanged notes, compliments and critiques of each other’s teams’ performances. TRD rented Rockingham [North Carolina Speedway] for a couple of days.We went over there with Team Red Bull and Michael Waltrip Racing. We were pretty pleased with the degree of information sharing and cooperation that we saw throughout that test. … It would be nice to say that both of the Red Bull cars and Dale Jarrett qualifying for Bristol on time was part of the benefit that came out of that test.”
On whether the Toyota program is going in the right direction: “Yes, absolutely. We’ve said all along that we’re hoping for steady progress and [at Bristol] it’s a different world than the current car on mile-and-a-half tracks. It’s really our first short-track experience and first experience for everybody with this new car. I’m very encouraged from the progress we’ve made from the date of the COT test. …We had zero experience with any of our teams running on a short track. We had durability questions. We had engine questions. We had production questions. We had every question in the world. For the teams to go from where they were in testing [at Bristol] four weeks ago, to putting five cars in the race, all of them qualifying on time, is a significant improvement and a step in the right direction.”
On rookie driver A.J. Allmendinger, who qualified at Bristol after failing to make the first four races: “There’s probably not a team in the industry that could have afforded to take a chance on an A.J. Allmendinger and stand there behind him, watch him develop and help him develop other than Red Bull because the sponsor is the owner. If you look at the criticism that Bill Davis Racing has had with Jeremy [Mayfield] not making races this year, and he has been around a long time, that is the pressure that is brought to bear by having to report to a sponsor. Red Bull’s in a unique situation in that they can afford to take a chance like that and do it the hard way, working with a young guy and getting them up to speed.”
On problems with the Michael Waltrip team not making races: “Michael has some organizational issues to work through. … But that is a team issue and I’m sure the team will work through that. We’re trying to offer some mutual help. They have a situation where Michael is having trouble getting into races, but so is Dale Jarrett on speed. We’re trying to do some things on the car side, not that we know all the answers on the car side because we’re still learning. It’s kind of a partnership, and because it’s a partnership, we are a patient company and I just pray that NAPA and his sponsors are [patient], because that’s something you need when you are trying to put together something of this size and this scope in such a short period of time. It’s going to take awhile.”

Kenny’s Distruction
Saying he had waited 43 years to finally get to tear something BIG apart., but he didn’t know how to. Kenny climbed aboard an escavator to tear down Oak Express. Kenny had the time of his life. You could hear him yelling WOOOOOOHOOOOO.
He jumped in the 78 Furniture Row Racing go cart to take the final lap around the Malibu Race track. He tore the track up after taking the green flag. Bring the car to a stop while doing a 180 under the checkered flag. When he got out of the car he did a little dance.
Kenny had an autograph session just down the road at Bedroom Expressions another of the Furniture Row stores. Kenny took the time to chat with the fans. Yes he had 6 cans of Mountain Dew and 4 bottles of water to get him through 3 hours of signing. That should be one fun flight back to North Carolina.
Kenny and General Manager Joe Garone were very pleased with the race at Bristol this past weekend. They are looking forward to Martinsville and testing at Richmond. (FRR PR courtesy of Heather M.)

78 Brings It To Bristol
Furniture Row Racing finished an impressive 21st at Bristol Motor Speedway last weekend in the first Car Of Tomorrow Race.
Driver Kenny Wallace shares some insight about Bristol, and what the team can expect at Martinsville this weekend.
“The performance of the team has dramatically improved from last season. Finishing 21st at Bristol made my whole weekend. We finished where we deserved to be last Sunday.
Now we need to go to Martinsville and do the same thing over. The team is currently at Ginn Motorsports in Charlotte. This means I’ll be able to get into the car a few days before we head to Martinsville. We’re taking a different COT to the track. This car has different geometry to accommodate the flat track. Qualifying will still be very difficult because the bigger teams still have a head start on us. Despite their advantages, I’m happy with how we are competing against them.” (FRR PR courtesy of Heather M.)
BMS CONCRETE WILL BE AVAILABLE TO FANS ON JULY 1
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Tuesday, March 27, 2007) – History was made in August of 1992 when Bristol Motor Speedway hosted the very first NASCAR Cup Series race on an all-concrete surface. In July of this year, fans will get the opportunity to own a piece of that history.
A new concrete surface will be in place for NASCAR’s most popular race, the Sharpie 500 in August. However, on July 1, pieces of the original concrete surface from the Start/Finish Line, where drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart have celebrated Bristol victories, will be made available for fans looking to add the most unique of souvenirs to their racing memorabilia collection.
Three versions of the collectible will be made available to fans. There is a piece of concrete in an acrylic case that will sell for $25, a 12”x14” framed piece that is $60 and the Concrete Showpiece, priced at $100. A portion of all sales of the concrete will benefit the Bristol chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities.
Quantities from the actual Start/Finish Line are limited. Only the actual concrete raced on by Bristol winners since 1992 will be sold – after it’s gone, no other portions of the surface will be sold.
Anyone wishing to order a piece of Bristol history can call the Speedway World souvenir store at BMS at (423) 989-6960 beginning July 1, order online at www.gospeedwayworld.com, or visit the BMS souvenir store or any Speedway souvenir stand Aug. 22-25 during race week.
