AT&T Wants Logo Change Now
Telecommunications giant AT&T filed a motion Monday, asking that its logo be added to Jeff Burton’s car immediately. The motion was filed in U.S. District Court in Atlanta, where the company also filed its lawsuit against NASCAR. A hearing on the motion has not yet been scheduled. Burton is sponsored by cell phone service provider Cingular. AT&T recently took full ownership of Cingular as part of its recent merger with BellSouth and intends to eliminate the brand name. AT&T officials acknowledge they agreed to a contract with Childress’ team that contains provisions saying Cingular can’t increase the size or placement of its logo on the car and can’t switch its sponsorship to another team. But they say the contract does not contain language preventing a logo change if Cingular’s ownership structure changes.

NASCAR Returns Confiscated Car
NASCAR returned the Bristol race-winning No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports car to the team by 11 a.m. this morning, NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Monday. NASCAR had impounded the car after the race to take the vehicle to NASCAR’s Research and Development Center in North Carolina for further evaluation. The sanctioning body had announced before the race, which was the debut of its new car of tomorrow, that it would impound cars following the first few races in order to see how the car changed from the start of the race to the end of it.

Bristol Overnight Rating Drop
Fox’s broadcast of Sunday’s Food City 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway earned a 4.9 overnight rating from Nielsen Media Research and an 11 market share, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. The rating is 7.5 percent lower than the 5.3 the race drew overnight in 2006 and 12.5 percent lower than the 5.6 overnight figure in 2005.

Bristol Motor Speedway Will Rebuild Track
Bristol Motor Speedway will have a new look when NASCAR fans return in the fall. To the delight of some drivers and crew chiefs, work on a new concrete surface begins this morning on the World’s Fastest Half-Mile. BMS officials have consulted with current and former drivers, including Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon. The goal is to offer a smoother surface which leads to better racing.

AT&T wants logo on Burton’s car immediately: Telecommunications giant AT&T filed a motion Monday, asking that its logo be added to Jeff Burton’s #31 Chevy immediately. AT&T sued NASCAR on March 16 after racing series officials refused to allow AT&T to put its logo on Burton’s car because of NASCAR’s deal with Nextel, which sponsors NASCAR’s top series — the Nextel Cup. “We must bring this issue to resolution,” John Burbank, vice president of marketing for AT&T, said in a statement. “The season is well under way and so are our rebranding efforts. This filing is a logical next step for us in the process, and one we must pursue so that we can simply move forward with our paint scheme — something our agreement with NASCAR allows us to do.” AT&T officials acknowledge they agreed to a contract with Childress’ team that contains provisions saying Cingular can’t increase the size or placement of its logo on the car and can’t switch its sponsorship to another team. But they say the contract does not contain language preventing a logo change if Cingular is bought out by another company. NASCAR and Nextel officials declined comment when the lawsuit was filed. The lawsuit seeks permission to make the logo switch and damages for the “substantial harm” NASCAR has caused to the company. The lawsuit calls altering the design of the #31 car an “integral part” of the company’s brand name switch, and that NASCAR’s refusal to allow it inhibits the company’s ability to “attract new customers and retain existing ones.”(AP/ESPN.com), see past news on the AT&T lawsuit and Cingular on my #31 Team Schemes page.(3-26-2007) www.jayski.com/teams/31.htm

Vickers suffers burns at Bristol; will test this week: #83-Brian Vickers cockpit was contaminated by excessive heat and fumes resulting from an exhaust system failure half-way through the race [at Bristol]. Vickers soldiered on for 200+ laps while enduring burns on his bottom and feet and noxious exhaust leaking into his racecar to lead a lap in competition and finish on the lead lap in 15th place. Part-way through the race, Vickers suddenly radioed the team that his engine was running roughly and he had smoke and fumes entering his cockpit. Initially suspecting another engine malady, it was subsequently revealed that a section of exhaust pipe directly beneath Vickers seat had failed and separated, affecting the engines performance. Vickers reported a severe heat problem developing inside his Toyota. Representatives of BVLLC reported Monday afternoon that Brian Vickers is doing well and recovering from the 1st and 2nd-degree burns suffered to his bottom/feet and exhaust inhalation Vickers experienced during Sundays Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Vickers requested medical attention following the race, including oxygen, and is resting at home in Charlotte. He plans to address TRB business obligations Tuesday, test at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Wednesday and is expected to be ready for this weekends race at Martinsville.(Brianvickers.com)(3-27-2007)

Gordon’s shop not ready…hires Cal Wells UPDATE: #7-Robby Gordon said Friday that his new shop in Charlotte, N.C., will not be ready in May as he had hoped. The weather this winter has just killed us, said Gordon. Were moving dirt and getting up to speed on that, its just taking longer than I wanted, to be honest with you, to get the stuff in place. The Nextel Cup owner/driver did not have a firm completion date, but said the pouring of the foundation for the new home of Robby Gordon Motorsports should be in the next couple of weeks. Gordon also has enlisted the help of former NASCAR Nextel Cup team owner Cal Wells III. Cals been coming to work with us on race weekends and observing, said Gordon Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway. Hes just trying to help me in any way he can with the experience that he has. As for the new Fusion Car of Tomorrow, Gordon is enthusiastic. Im fine with the new car, said Gordon, who once again is without a sponsor this weekend. I think its the great equalizer. We just havent got our piece figured out yet.(Ford Racing)(3-25-2007) UPDATE: Former car owner Cal Wells said he’s in talks with sponsors and an ownership group to be part of a two-car effort next season. Wells said he hopes to have a deal done later this spring. He would be a minority owner in the team but run it.(Roanoke Times)(3-26-2007)

Burton races following the Golden Rule
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Jeff Burton doesn’t have to look back and wonder about what might have happened at Bristol Motor Speedway Sunday afternoon. After a victory in Bristol, Kyle Busch said it was frustrating to drive the Car of Tomorrow, that NASCAR has designed to be cheaper, safer and better for competition. “I’m still not a big fan of these things,” Busch said. “I can’t stand to drive them.” He said the car did not turn easily and had no grip on the track. When it starts to slide, he said, it just keeps sliding, “almost like you’re on skis.”
– New York Times

The new Car of Tomorrow started a new trend at Bristol. Unlike some of the bump-and-run finishes at Bristol made famous by Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Burton not only refrained from hitting Kyle Busch on the final lap, he backed off enough to let Busch gain control of his Chevrolet as they started down the back straightaway. A track known more for bumping and grinding was suddenly tame, especially during what’s normally a furious stretch drive.
– Florida Times-Union

Most drivers say they will know more about the Car of Tomorrow in weeks to come, because Sunday’s race was not a good indicator of its performance. At short tracks like this one, where aerodynamics do not play a major role, the car did not make much of a difference. The car will show how it really races when the series goes to a bigger track, like the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway, where the series will race April 21.
– New York Times

Dodge racing boss Mike Accavitti will try to entice Dodge drivers, including Kasey Kahne, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman, at Daytona next month. Should one win the Daytona 500, the driver will get to choose an SRT vehicle, including the V-10 Viper.
– Detroit News

All seven Toyota teams are outside the top 35 in car owner points following Sunday’s race at Bristol, Tenn., and six of the seven will have to get in next Sunday’s Nextel Cup race at Martinsville, Va., on speed. Dale Jarrett is the only Toyota driver with a safety net. He has two past champions provisionals remaining of the six allowed during the year.

Busch Testing at Richmond International Raceway Tuesday
Testing for the May 4th Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI NASCAR Busch Series race begins Tuesday and runs through Wednesday. Testing is from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day, with the garage opening at 11:00 a.m. Over 40 drivers are expected to be on hand for the two-day test.

Ginn Racing development driver and motocross champion Ricky Carmichael made his stock car debut Saturday night in a super late model race at Columbia Motorsports Park. Under the watchful eye of Nextel Cup point leader Mark Martin, Carmichael finished third in his heat race. In the main feature, he overcame a second lap incident, but on Lap 7 of 25 his right-front tire went flat, sending his No. 4 Monster Energy Chevy into the wall and a premature exit from the race. Fellow Ginn development driver Matt Martin finished fourth in his heat and seventh overall in the feature. Carmichael’s next two scheduled late model races will be April 21 and April 28 at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. He is expected to compete in a total of 15 late model races this season. (Ginn PR) (03-25-07)

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) development driver Bryan Clauson will make his stock car debut in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) race this Saturday, March 24, at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Fla. A total of 48 cars are entered for this Saturday’s ARCA event, but only 35 can race. Clauson will have to qualify on time Saturday evening. The 17-year-old racer will pilot the No. 40 Memorex Dodge in his first stock car appearance, which will also mark Memorex’ first motorsports event as a primary sponsor. Currently, Memorex serves as an associate sponsor on the No. 41 CGRFS Dodge in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series for driver Reed Sorenson and NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) for Sorenson and David Stremme. The Memorex brand will assume primary sponsorship of the No. 41 Dodge later this year during the final 10 races of the 2007 NBS schedule. Clauson will drive seven of those 10 races, sharing the ride with Sorenson. (CGRwFS) (03-20-07) AND: Clauson, in a Chip Ganassi Racing Memorex-sponsored Dodge, finished two car lengths away in second (behind James Buescher) after leading 61 laps. Clauson battled back from an earlier race incident. “Our tires were just used up. We stretched our last run 125 laps, so we were really slipping and sliding out there. I think we’ll be back this year for five to eight more ARCA races.”(ARCA RE/MAX PR) (03-25-07)

Arizona Police Searching for former NASCAR Owner Scott Glynn: Chandler [Arizona] police still were searching Thursday for a Gilbert businessman and one-time NASCAR team owner who eluded capture as SWAT officers surrounded his home, police said. Scott Glynn, 42, who has owned Lariat Construction, Inc. in Gilbert and a majority of the #58 NASCAR Busch Series team in 2005, was involved in a domestic violence incident Tuesday afternoon at his estranged wife’s home, police said. His wife, Diana, ran out of her home around 2:30 p.m. and contacted a nearby officer, police said. She was distraught and asking for help. Police said Glynn also came running out of the home and got into his pickup truck and left the area. Officers soon learned Glynn also has two felony warrants for his arrest, police said. Within 10 minutes, a Chandler police detective spotted Glynn in front of his Gilbert home police said. SWAT officers surrounded his home and believed he was inside alone, but when officers searched the residence, he wasn’t there, police said. In 2005, Glynn purchased the #58 Busch Series team from Akins Motorsports and began fielding a Craftsman Truck Series team, with plans to own a Nextel Cup Series team by this year. Glynn is suspected of unlawful imprisonment, burglary, assault, disorderly conduct, criminal damage, and driving with a revoked license. He also has two felony warrants, one from Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on theft on a $72,000 bond and one from North Carolina for assault and fraud.(Arizona Republic)(3-23-2007)

Fox Sports: The Big Mistake At Bristol
There is no tougher feeling for a driver than to run a long NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race and fall out on the final lap. All those laps of hard work and dedication…ending in frustration. Three hours of undivided attention to one task…with nothing but anger as a result. Today, at Bristol, the production team at NASCAR on Fox left the viewers one lap short. This mistake was big.

To do this, NASCAR had to agree to place a small set directly in Victory Lane at the tracks. Their willingness to cooperate in this innovative idea has resulted in the sleeper hit show of 2007… Victory Lane.

Bible Verse of the Day

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”
