Busch (Kyle) Wins At Bristol
Busch was expected to win the Food City 500 and there was a Busch in Victory Lane, but it wasn’t Kurt, this time it was Kyle Busch taking the first win in the new Car of Tomorrow at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was Busch’s first short track victory and the fourth of his 83 Nextel Cup race career. Busch’s win was the 200th NASCAR (Cup, Busch, & Truck) victory for car owner Rick Hendrick and it was the 600th victory for Chevrolet in the Nextel Cup Series. The race came down to a green-white-checkers finish with Busch leading, Jeff Gordon in second and Jeff Burton in third. Burton got the better restart and passed Gordon with ease and was pressuring Busch on the final lap but couldn’t pass him without wrecking the young driver. Burton finished second, Gordon third and Kevin Harvick fourth. Greg Biffle’s car was sporadically fast and after a battle with several drivers, he finished in the fifth spot. Rounding out the top ten were Jeff Green, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Jamie McMurray. Jeff Gordon moves into the lead in the Nextel Cup standings with a 3 point advantage over Jeff Burton and 75 over his teammate Jimmie Johnson. The Nextel Cup Series moves to Martinsville Speedway next Sunday April 1, 2007 for the Goody’s Cool Orange 500. The race is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time on FOX.
Bristol Motor Speedway Will Rebuild Track
Bristol Motor Speedway will have a new look when NASCAR fans return in the fall. To the delight of some drivers and crew chiefs, work on a new concrete surface begins this morning on the World’s Fastest Half-Mile. BMS officials have consulted with current and former drivers, including Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon. The goal is to offer a smoother surface which leads to better racing.

No. 16 Car Fails Post-Race Inspection
Greg Biffle got a fifth-place finish Sunday at Bristol, his first top-10 finish of the season in the No. 16 Ford, but the car was found to be too low in postrace inspection. NASCAR vice president for competition Robin Pemberton said Biffle’s car would be taken back to the research and development facility in Concord for more examination. Penalties will be forthcoming early this week. Biffle didn’t know about the problem, the only one announced after NASCAR checked eight cars after the race, before he left the track.
Toyota Analyzes Waltrip Car
Toyota’s efforts to help Michael Waltrip Racing improve its performance will be extensive. Lee White, senior vice president and general manager of Toyota Racing Development, detailed those plans Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway. He said they took the car Dale Jarrett ran at California last month and will prepare it for a test at Nashville. Some of Toyota’s engineers spent all day and night Friday at Waltrip’s race shop, dismantling the car and weighing every component. Then they did a suspension analysis, along with analyzing other parts of the car. That was to be finished Saturday night. “Our group of people and his people worked right through the night to help finish that part of the project,” White said Saturday afternoon. “We’re paying overtime for that. That demonstrates our commitment.”
Newman To Run Big Car Series Race
The second season of the Premier Racing Association’s Big Car Series will kick-off Saturday night April 7th with a return visit to South Georgia Motorsports Park. When the series raced there last October, NASCAR Nextel Cup regular Ryan Newman paid a visit and won the 100-lap event. Newman has confirmed that he will be in attendance on April 7th to defend his victory. In addition, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series star Terry Cook has also told PRA officials that he will be there.
Three Race Fans Killed
Three friends bound for a NASCAR race in Tennessee were killed yesterday when their small plane crashed shortly after takeoff into a patch of woods near a Jacksonville home. Baltimore County police identified the victims as Theodore C. Ryder, 45, who was piloting the aircraft, Paul E. Sorensen, 48, and Timothy H. Conner, 48 - all from Joppa. There were no injuries on the ground, officials said.

Dodge execs repeat commitment to teams [and the sport]: Dodge will remain committed to the NASCAR Nextel Cup series regardless of whether Chrysler is sold, the director of Dodge motorsports said Sunday. “Yeah, there are some things going on, things we’re looking at, but it’s not going to affect our racing program,” Mike Accavitti said during the Car of Tomorrow’s debut at Bristol Motor Speedway. Accavitti and Tom LaSorda, the chairman of DaimlerChrysler, visited with the owners of three of Dodge’s top teams — Evernham Motorsports, Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and Penske Racing — before Sunday’s race. “We talked to everybody today,” Accavitti said. “The message is pretty consistent. We don’t intend on going anywhere.” That doesn’t mean Chrysler won’t. KeyBank Capital Markets analyst Brett Hoselton recently reported that Canadian-based Magna International Inc. and an unnamed equity group have offered $4.6 billion to $4.7 billion for Chrysler. “This is being handled by people at a much higher level than I am,” Accavitti said. “As far as they’re concerned, they’d like to bring a quicker resolution to it than a slower resolution. Every indication I have is it’ll be sooner rather than later.” There have been reports that the sale could happen within the next week or so. “Under any scenario, as far as we’re concerned, we see us remaining involved in NASCAR,” said Accavitti, noting Dodge’s contracts with its NASCAR teams range from one to five more years. It’s a great way to reach those fans and tell them about the performance brand of Dodge.”(ESPN.com)(3-26-2007)
Study: Will NASCARs Increased Safety Efforts Increase Accidents? When NASCAR debuts the Car of Tomorrow at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 25 [yesterday], Todd Nesbit, an avid NASCAR fan and assistant professor of economics at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will be busy counting the number of accidentsand how many of those drivers walk away without a scratch. In 2006, Nesbit and Russell Sobel, professor of economics at West Virginia University, produced a study that explored how drivers react to having cars so safe that they can generally walk away with no injuries after crashing into a concrete wall or another car at a very high rate of speed. Based on results of our study, we would project that drivers will drive more recklessly and take more risks while driving the Car of Tomorrow, Nesbit said. Initially, there will be a learning curve for everyone, which will likely increase the number of accidents as drivers and crews get used to the vehicles. Once the learning curve has passed, we predict that the new normal rate of crashes will be higher than it is currently because of the response to additional safety features on the Car of Tomorrow. The study, Automobile safety regulation and the incentive to drive recklessly: Evidence from NASCAR, shows that NASCAR drivers, in fact, do drive more recklessly in response to the increased safety of their vehicles. However, even with an increase in accidents, there is a reduction in total injuriesbecause the increase in riskier driving is not enough to offset the benefits from an increase in safety features. Roush Fenway must lose team by 2010 UPDATE losing Ameriquest after 2007: Roush Fenway Racing will have to decrease its number of Nextel Cup teams from five to four by the start of the 2010 season, team president Geoff Smith said Saturday. NASCAR announced in 2005 that it would limit organizations to four fulltime Cup teams and that it would work with Roush to get down from four to five. Originally, the agreement was that once Roush lost a sponsor and driver at the same time, it would have to get down to four. “That [original discussion] triggered a loop that made the shrinkage date unpredictable, so it was [changed to] very simply, when the 2010 season starts, you’ll have four,” Smith said. “We have to be at four at the start of 2010, regardless of what happens to us in the interim, if we lose a driver, lose a sponsor.” Smith indicated that his contracts are solid through the 2009 season. He also said in the perfect world, Roush would sell one of the teams. “We’ve got three more years to sell one of our teams off,” Smith said. “Hopefully, we can retain some business with that sale.”(SceneDaily.com)(3-24-2007)
UPDATE: Changes are on the way at Roush Fenway Racing, which is losing one primary sponsor after this season and has been ordered by NASCAR to drop one of its five Nextel Cup teams by 2010. Ameriquest, the mortgage company that became the primary sponsor of Greg Biffle’s #16 car this season, has asked Roush Fenway to sell off the final two years of its contract, which expires in 2009. The lender’s struggling parent company recently announced a second round of layoffs, and Ameriquest last week pulled out of a 30-year deal as rights holder to the name of the Texas Rangers’ ballpark. “It’s very clear that they want to reduce their contract exposure to us,” Roush Fenway president Geoff Smith said Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway. “If we weren’t able to do that, then you get into, OK, here’s your car, what are we going to do with it? You’ve got this lame duck environment going on, which is not helpful to anybody. So in practical terms, we can assume that we’ll have another sponsor for next season.” Smith doesn’t anticipate any difficulties in finding a new sponsor, especially given that Roush Fenway has nearly an entire season to search. Roush Fenway also has until the 2010 season to comply with NASCAR’s maximum of four cars per organization, announced by the sanctioning body in 2005. The car cap was put in place after all five Roush cars qualified for the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship. “There’s no mistaking our understanding of what we have to do,” Smith said. “Regardless of what goes on within our programs, we have to go to four [cars] in 2010.”(NASCAR.com)(3-25-2007)
New DEI deal for Dale Jr. by May a ‘realistic goal’: Although negotiations are on hold, that shouldn’t prevent #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. from having a new deal with Dale Earnhardt Inc. by May. “Absolutely,” Max Siegel, the president of Global Operations for DEI, said before Sunday’s Nextel Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway. “All of the issues are properly framed. That’s a realistic goal.” Negotiations were put on hold when Earnhardt Jr.’s sister and business partner, Kelley Earnhardt Elledge, underwent surgery on Friday to remove tumors from her pancreas. She is expected to stay in the hospital for four or five days. “She’s at a critical part of this process,” Siegel said. “I don’t want the focus to be on her recovery for the contract negotiation. “Every day we’re checking in with her and making sure that the first priority is her getting healthy. As soon as they’re ready to resume any kind of discussions we’re ready.” Siegel doesn’t foresee any situation in which negotiations would continue without Kelley. But Siegel sees no reason why a new deal can’t still be done by May while DEI still has exclusive negotiating rights. “You can’t really rush the process,” he said. “We’re all headed in the right direction, so just as soon as it makes sense for us to sit back down we will. But none of us want to do anything that is going to interfere with her recovery or frame of mind.” Earnhardt Jr. is in the last year of his contract with the company his father built. He said earlier this year he wanted majority ownership to be a part of his new deal.(ESPN.com)(3-25-2007)

Jeff Burton says his Richard Childress Racing team can’t wait long for a resolution to its AT&T lawsuit against NASCAR. That’s why he’s keenly awaiting to see if AT&T will get the injunction it’s asking for to be allowed to put the AT&T logos on the car in place of Cingular.

Jarrett rips Kenseth, drops out of top 35 in points
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Dale Jarrett blasted 2003 champion Matt Kenseth after contact between the two ended Jarrett’s day just 45 laps into the race Sunday at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Jarrett, the 1999 series champion, was bumped from behind by Kenseth and the touch spent him spinning into the wall. The rear wing of his Car of Tomorrow shattered, forcing Jarrett out of the race and to a 42nd-place finish.
“This is not the first time that [Kenseth's] done something like this,” Jarrett said. “Everybody has this great vision that Matt Kenseth is this nice guy on the race track. He is a nice guy away from the track. But he’s a rough driver on the race track when he doesn’t have to be.
“We’ll have a discussion.”
The accident put Michael Waltrip Racing into an even deeper hole as Jarrett dropped to 39th in owner points. That’s a precarious position to be in next week, when NASCAR begins guaranteeing a spot in the field to the top 35 current drivers.
Jarrett has just two past champion provisionals left to use this season, and once those are gone, he’ll have to qualify on speed each week until he cracks the top 35.
It’s the same boat all the Toyota teams are in, with all seven Camrys outside the top 35 in points.
Dave Blaney is 37th, Brian Vickers is 38th, David Reutimann is 45th, Jeremy Mayfield is 47th, A.J. Allmendinger is 49th and Waltrip is 50th.

Third-place finishes means point lead
