Huff: Meth mess could put brakes on Mayfield’s NASCAR career
Jeremy Mayfield has for years been trying to be a major league stock car driver. He’s come close in the past, but, now with the allegations of drug use he may forever be known more for what was in his urine than his skills behind the wheel.

Bill Weber Out At TNT
The Daily Planet Blogspot is reporting that Bill Weber is gone from the NASCAR on TNT coverage for the final two Sprint Cup Series events on the network. TNT confirmed this with The Daly Planet on Wednesday morning. Weber was scheduled to call the Wide-Open coverage for the network from Daytona on Saturday night. The summer race in Daytona is TNT’s showcase event for the network’s six race TV package. Ralph Sheheen will handle the play-by-play duties for Daytona and Chicago with Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach alongside. TV ratings for the Sprint Cup Series race from Loudon, NH were up slightly and that may have played a role in this decision. Weber was involved in a late night incident last Friday night at the TNT hotel in Manchester, NH. It spilled-over into Weber being sent home by TNT executives on Saturday and now his release from the TV package. TNT has been tight-lipped about the issue and gave no indication whether or not Weber would continue with the network in 2010.
Kyle Petty: Grand Marshal At Daytona
Kyle Petty will serve as Grand Marshal for the 51st annual Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, July 4 at Daytona International Speedway. Petty, who is currently serving as an analyst for TNT, will give the command “Gentlemen, start your engines” to the 43-car field and to his father Richard Petty, who will pace the field in a replica 200th-winning No. 43 car. Petty’s father Richard will be honored throughout the weekend during the 25th anniversary celebration of his historic 200th win, which took place July 4, 1984 with President Ronald Reagan in attendance

Mayfield not at Daytona as garage opens: Car owners #64-Larry Gunselman and #36-Tommy Baldwin say they will not put Jeremy Mayfield in their cars this weekend at Daytona International Speedway. Gunselman says his sponsor, Fred’s, does not want Mayfield in the car. Baldwin says Mayfield has too much baggage to drive his car. Mayfield’s indefinite suspension for a failed drug test was lifted by a federal judge on Wednesday, allowing him to race this weekend. His team was not at the track when the garage opened Thursday, which NASCAR initially said was the deadline for the #41 to enter the race. NASCAR now says Mayfield has until 3 p.m. to bring Mayfield Motorsports to the track.(Associated Press)(7-2-2009)
Mayfield’s attorney speaks: Wednesday on “Sirius Speedway” on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, host Dave Moody spoke with Bill Diehl, the attorney for driver Jeremy Mayfield.
Host, Dave Moody: “In your view, what was the key to this decision going your way?”
Bill Diehl: “Probably NASCAR’s over the top confidence about how right they were and how wrong Jeremy was. You know, they were wrong about it from the get-go and we stayed with our position throughout the argument and throughout the time that we’ve been suspended and we just carried the day as far as the judge is concerned that Jeremy had been treated wrong and to right the wrong meant giving him back his position in NASCAR and suspending the suspension.”
Moody: “How soon will he be back? Will we see Mayfield Motorsports at Daytona trying to qualify this weekend and, if so, will Jeremy be the driver?”
Diehl: “I think that’s probably problematic to be perfectly honest. I think it’s real difficult for him to get ready starting tonight and then race Saturday. He normally would have three days with a Sunday race and instead he only has two with a Saturday night race and I think it will be quite difficult. He hasn’t made up his mind as far as a final decision is concerned but I think it realistic to expect that he’d be returning next week rather than this week.”
Moody: “There have been conflicting reports since the ruling was announced earlier this afternoon about whether or not NASCAR would appeal this decision. What’s your expectation? Do you have any at this point?”
Diehl: “I really don’t. You know, they would do well to put this behind them, put this whole issue behind them, and go forward. It’s what I hope. But, again, they’re proud people and they don’t lose very often and they’ve lost something that they may decide to try to carry on the case even longer and fight harder and that might be their position. I can’t tell you today, for certain, that there’ll be any contact. The judge himself urged the parties to try to talk to each other. We’re certainly willing. We’ve never been haughty about this. We’ve never been over the top and I don’t think we’ve been pushy. We’ve said, ‘We have rights. We think they ought to be vindicated. We think you ought to listen.’ So far they’ve been real hard to deal with. Maybe their position will change. I can’t predict that.”

Pennzoil Platinum is designed to provide the ultimate cleansing under the most severe driving style or conditions to maximize engine responsiveness.(RCR)(7-2-2009)

The rig will carry a wide variety of items featuring some of NASCAR’s most popular drivers so even the smallest racing fan can show his colors. NASCAR driver Joe Nemechek races through thick, thin
By Stephen Cole Smith SENTINEL STAFF WRITER July 2, 2009
Veteran NASCAR driver Joe Nemechek would not disagree that it has been a tough year.
He would disagree, though — loud and long — that it’s time for the 45-year-old Lakeland native to hang up his helmet. “I think I’m driving, and qualifying, as well as ever,” Nemechek said. “And given our resources, we’ve brought some fast cars to the track this year. We just need a partner to help us get back up to that next level.” www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-sportsnascar-nemechek-02070209jul02,0,6813565.story

CNBC’s “Inside Track: Refueling the Business of NASCAR” Will Premiere On Thursday, July 9th at 9PM, 10PM and 1AM.
CNBC’s “Inside Track: Refueling the Business of NASCAR” hosted by Emmy-Nominated CNBC Sports Business Reporter, Darren Rovell, examines a sport that was once seemingly unstoppable. Infamous for its ties to southern bootleggers and famous for filling some of the largest venues in the world – 200,000 fans at some speedways – a decade of growth made it the fastest growing sport in America.
But the rise of the 90s has given way to a new century recession. An imploding car business and shrinking sponsorship budgets are threatening the corporate dollars that are the sport’s very lifeblood. NASCAR is now feeling the pressure of the economic implosion as the companies whose names are decaled on the cars are reconsidering their investments. Owned and controlled by the France family, NASCAR is looking at ways to weather the storm.
“Inside Track: Refueling the Business of NASCAR” takes you inside the garage of driver turned owner Tony Stewart and a never before seen look at how NASCAR sponsors are looking for business…from each other. CNBC’s Rovell goes one-on-one with NASCAR Chairman & CEO Brian France as well as NASCAR’s biggest fan. CNBC takes viewers under the hood for a look at the people behind the iconic American companies that have stuck with this sport, which was born more than five

Bill Weber out at TNT – RTR called it correctly
It was reported Monday night on RaceTalkRadio.com that Bill Weber would remain out of the booth for this weekend’s event at Daytona and during the Sprint Cup Series event at Chicagoland. TNT replied to our news report with a denial. This denial was posted across the Internet.
However, TNT announced today that Weber would be replaced and he would not return to the booth for TNT’s final two races before handing the series coverage to ESPN and ABC.
“Bill Weber will not be part of TNT’s NASCAR coverage of the Cup Series for the network’s last two races. Ralph Sheheen will handle play-by-play duties for The Coke Zero 400 in Daytona and the LifeLock.com 400 from Chicagoland. Sheheen will be calling the races alongside analysts Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach in the booth,” according to a press release from TNT.
RaceTalkRadio.com makes every effort possible to ensure we’re reporting accurately. Our site visitors and listeners have come to trust RTR over our three year history and we have not made it a habit of reporting false information.
Over the weekend, TNT released news that Weber would not be attending the New Hampshire race due to personal reasons. RTR reported on Monday that over the New Hamphsire race weekend, Weber was allegedly involved in an altercation at his hotel that resulted in his suspension from TNT. All of the specifics of the alleged altercation were not detailed in our reporting because we felt it was not necessary to release the information. But at the end of the day the story was correct.
Check out Lori Munro’s latest Bill Weber cartoon on RaceTalkRadio.com.

One of the pleasant surprises on the NASCAR Nationwide Series is the performance of Knoxville’s Trevor Bayne driving for Michael Waltrip Racing. In three starts, Bayne has two top-15 finishes and an outside front-row start. Not bad for a driver who had not raced on a track bigger than one mile until four weeks ago. Bayne looked to be the future for Dale Earnhardt Inc. when he signed to be a developmental driver and raced in the Camping World East series last year. When DEI merged with Chip Ganassi’s operation, DEI’s developmental and Nationwide teams folded. That left Bayne without a ride heading into 2009.Read more (knoxnews.com) (07-02-09)

I wonder if followers of Juan Pablo Montoya’s twitter wish they’d paid more attention in Spanish class. And I also wonder if I’m the only one that copies and pastes his tweets into an online translator to see what he said.
