Jeremy Mayfield found a friend in U.S. District Court Judge Graham Mullen and he’ll get his shot at returning to Sprint Cup Series racing this weekend in Daytona. Judge Mullen granted Mayfield’s motion of lifting his suspension from NASCAR after according to NASCAR, Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines.
What does this mean?
Mayfield will be allowed to race while his case plays out in federal court. NASCAR could appeal the decision as early as tomorrow afternoon to try and stop Mayfield from racing this weekend. But according to NASCAR officials, while the organization is disappointed in today’s judgment they do not expect to appeal the decision.
NASCAR lawyer Helen Maher said in court today, “If he’s (Mayfield) allowed to race again while this litigation is pending, it’s possible he’ll end up hurting or killing someone.”
However, Judge Mullen had a different thought. “The harm to Mayfield substantially outweighs harm to NASCAR,” said the Judge.
Mayfield’s plan is to go to Daytona and practice with the Sprint Cup Series tomorrow afternoon.
