TV Times – Logano Won, But Is He Still Too Green for Cup Racing?
by: Lou Modestino

Even though Cup newcomer Middletown, CT driver Joey Logano won the rain shortened Lenox Tool 301 Sprint Cup race at NHMS in Loudon, NH, it still may not silent his critics that he’s “too green” to be racing in the top tier NASCAR series. It’s because he hasn’t won a race that has gone the full distance so far.

Second laboratory supports Mayfield test result
Testing performed by an independent laboratory supported the results that left Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield indefinitely suspended for failing NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, court documents said. Results of the test and the name of the individual tested were blacked out, but a NASCAR spokesman confirmed they were identical.
NASCAR claims Mayfield tested positive for a [...]

TNT Sunday Ratings Up
TNT’s telecast Sunday of the Sprint Cup Series’ Lenox Industrial Tools 301 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway earned a 4.1 cable rating and 5.555 million viewers from 1:59-5:45pm ET, the Sports Business Journal reported Tuesday. The telecast marks the first Cup Series race this season to see both year-over-year ratings and viewership gains, up 2.5 percent and 1.1 percent from last year’s 4.0 cable rating and 5.495 million viewers. The race also was the ninth most-viewed telecast on all of cable for the week of June 22-28. For four Cup Series races to date, TNT is averaging a 4.0 cable rating and 5.502 million viewers, down 4.8 percent and 3.7 percent from a 4.2 rating and 5.715 million viewers last year.

NASCAR Uses Second Lab For Mayfield Sample
Court documents show that NASCAR has had suspended owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield’s urine sample tested at a second lab in addition to the one that allegedly found initial evidence of an illegal substance. According to documents filed in Mayfield’s lawsuit seeking to have his suspension lifted, NASCAR sent Mayfield’s urine sample to MedTox Laboratories, which completed an analysis Thursday morning of two specimens. The results of the analysis, as well as the name of the person whose urine was tested, are blacked out or not listed, but it would be highly unlikely that NASCAR would submit a test result to the court that didn’t back up its previous assertion that Mayfield had an illegal drug in his system when tested May 1.

Johnson’s Team Captures Tissot Pit Crew Award in New Hampshire
Jimmie Johnson’s crew grabbed the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Sunday’s (June 28) NASCAR Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was the second Tissot victory of the season for the No. 48 crew, which also won at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in March. The win lifted Johnson’s crew to sole possession of third place in the Tissot standings. The crews for Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle lead the weekly competition with three wins each. The No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet Impala SS spent the least amount of time on pit road – 136.490 seconds — during the New Hampshire rain-shortened event. The pit crew effort helped Johnson to a top-10 finish (ninth).

Chase Notes going into Daytona: #99-Carl Edwards is in fifth place in the Sprint Cup standings, but is far from safe. From Edwards (+109) on down to 12th place #42-Juan Pablo Montoya (+1), eight members of the Top 12 in all are within the one race margin of dropping out of the standings. In fact, 14th place #00-David Reutimann could rise all the way to fifth if things fell his way at Daytona Saturday night. This is the most spots up for grabs at the 17-race mark in the six-year history of The Race to the Chase. #31-Jeff Burton’s fall from the Top 12 has been sudden and brutal. His 31st at New Hampshire dropped him another spot Sunday. He’s now lost eight spots in five races and is now 108 points out in 16th place. #33-Clint Bowyer lost more ground with a 20th and it is probably safe to count #29-Kevin Harvick out of making his fourth straight Chase as he is now 451 points out in 27th place. #2-Kurt Busch’s solid third at Loudon moved him to 206 points ahead of 13th place and gives him some breathing room. Castroneves wins 2nd Qtr DOTY Award: Indy 500 winner, Helio Castroneves, won a hotly-contested vote for the second quarter Driver of the Year 2009. The Brazilian, who won his third Indy 500 – from the pole – this May, narrowly edged NASCAR’s Tony Stewart who is now a co-owner driver, 119-116. It was the closest margin of victory since Stewart lost the overall award in a tie-breaker in 2002. In the voting Castroveneves took eight first-place votes and was on every ballot. Stewart was second only three points behind Castroneves. He also garnered eight first-place votes. Mark Martin was third in the voting with 42 points. Kyle Busch also received one first-place ballot. A total of 19 drivers scored points in the first quarter voting. Castroneves will receive a trophy and a Tissot wristwatch to be presented at a later date.(DOTY)(7-1-2009)

R&L returns to sponsor Kenseth: The #17 Ford of Matt Kenseth will carry the green and gold colors of R+L carriers this weekend at Daytona. The scheme will highlight R+L Global Services. It will be the second of four races this season with R+L Carriers as the primary on the #17 Ford. Kenseth has carried the R+L Carriers paint scheme 11 times since 2006. In his 11 previous starts in the #17 R+L Carriers Ford, Kenseth has achieved 11 top-12, nine top-10, and four top-five finishes. Kenseth will not be racing the same car that he won with in the Daytona 500. That car (RK-631), which was actually Kenseth’s third car that weekend, was left behind and can be seen at the Daytona Experience up until next season. The team will bring a brand new chassis (RK-658) to the race this weekend.(RFR). See the scheme on my #17 Team Scheme page.(7-1-2009)

Special scheme for Dale Jr. at Daytona: To honor the National Guard and celebrate Independence Day, the #88 Chevy of Dale Earnhardt Jr. will run a special hand-painted camouflage ACU (Army Combat Uniform) scheme this weekend. The Hendrick Motorsports body shop needed two days and 14 coats of DuPont paint to finish the job. Earnhardt will unveil the paint scheme to National Guard soldiers and fans at Daytona’s Bandshell on Wednesday. The Nationnal Guard “Serving America”/AMP Energy Chevy is a special paint scheme to honor National Guard soldiers who dedicate a portion of their time to serving their nation, state and local communities. Since first muster in 1636, National Guard soldiers have brought glory and honor upon themselves and the Guard through quiet and selfless service. Approximately 363,000 soldiers strong, the Army National Guard is the oldest component of the Armed Forces of the United States and celebrated its 372nd birthday in December 2008.
Earnhardt has 12 wins at Daytona International Speedway. He won the 2004 Daytona 500, the 2001 Pepsi 400, two Budweiser Shootouts (2003 and 2008) and five NASCAR Nationwide Series events. Earnhardt also won his Gatorade Duel qualifying races in 2003, 2004 and 2008. At this year’s AMP Energy 500 at Talladega, thousands of members of JR Nation will see their names on Earnhardt’s #88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevy as part of the AMP Energy “Get on the 88″ promotion. More info at www.AMPEnergy.com.(HMS)(7-1-2009)

PVA/Petty scheme for Allmendinger: The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway marks the 25th anniversary of Richard Petty’s 200th victory. The Paralyzed Veterans of America is running a tribute paint scheme on the #44 Dodge of A.J. Allmendinger in honor of the anniversary.(RPM)(7-1-2009)

Kenseth looking to Sweep: #17-Matt Kenseth will be looking to complete a rare sweep of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events at Daytona International Speedway. He will look to join Fireball Roberts (1962), Cale Yarborough (1968), LeeRoy Yarbrough (1969) and Bobby Allison as the only Daytona 500 champions to also win the Independence Day holiday classic in the same year.(DIS)(7-1-2009)

Stremme buys house, helps those out of work: #12-David Stremme added another title to his name this week. The 32-year-old driver just finalized the purchase of a new home in North Carolina. Stremme hired members of the racing community, who lost their jobs in the economic downturn, to help him move into his new abode. Stremme has completed all but one lap of NASCAR Cup Series competition at Daytona International Speedway. The 32-year-old has completed 99.8% of all the laps he has attempted at the historic speedway.(Penske Racing)(7-1-2009)

Chris Wimmer holds off Kenseth to win All-Star Challenge: Chris Wimmer not only won Tuesday night’s All-Star Challenge, he also earned praise from NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader Tony Stewart. Wimmer passed Cambridge native and 2003 Cup champion Matt Kenseth with 11 laps left to clinch victory in the 100-lap super late model race in front of approximately 6,000 fans at Madison International Speedway. “I don’t know much about him, but it doesn’t’t take long to figure out how good he is,” Stewart said of Wimmer. “Obviously, you go beat Matt Kenseth like that, it’s a big deal.(Wisconsin State Journal)(7-1-2009)

NASCAR: Truck Series Safe: Despite reports from independent blogger Mike Mulhern, NASCAR Vice President of Communications Jim Hunter says emphatically that there is no validity to a story circulating that the Camping World Truck Series will shut down. “There’s no truth to it whatsoever,” Hunter said. “It’s total B.S. The demise of the truck series is the figment of one person’s imagination. (Mulhern) has a history of fabricating false stories and this is another example of it. We’re very aware that (the Camping World Truck Series) is affected the hardest during this economic recession. We’re currently looking at options. We’ve never given up on a series and we’re not going to start now.” That said, NASCAR is looking at options to reduce costs such as decreasing the schedule, increasing the number of single-day dates and bringing back the half-time pit stops that could eliminate the traveling crews to five or six members. One possible solution that is off the table is the use of crate engines. NASCAR VP of Competition Robin Pemberton said they are not a viable option because “they’re not durable to last much beyond one race” which would raise costs, not lower them. Pemberton feels the sanctioning body has made “good gains with new rules and regulations” and the series “still makes sense.”(FoxSports)(6-30-2009)

Truex to MWR as of Chicago? looks doubtful: Could Martin Truex Jr. be headed to Waltrip’s outfit a little sooner than next season? It seems like a pretty good possibility. One garage source said it’s a likely possibility that Truex will be behind the wheel of Waltrip’s #55 NAPA Toyota Camry for the Lifelock.com 400 on July 11 at Chicagoland Speedway, with Aric Almirola taking over his current seat in the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing #1 Bass Pro Chevy. And while the Truex to MWR rumor has been floating in the pond for some time, another name was tossed into the rumor mill concerning the big Waltrip announcement [July 7th at 12:30pm/et]. Could Richard Petty Motorsports driver Kasey Kahne be heading to a new third Toyota team with MWR? Sounds odd, but its being whispered.[Jayski Note: Kahne is signed with RPM thru 2010](Hartford Courant)
AND The company line at Michael Waltrip Racing is that despite the expected announcement on July 7 [at 12:30pm/et] that Martin Truex Jr. will join the fold (hearing in the #56 Toyota), he will not drive the car until next season. And Waltrip will likely continue to run a limited 10 to 12 race schedule in the #55 car in 2010. But the consensus in the garage is that Truex could be in a MWR car as early as the Chicagoland Cup race in two weeks. A press release from NAPA announcing Waltrip’s brother Darrell (also a NASCAR on FOX analyst) as an honorary pit crew member for this weekend Coke Zero 400 has only fueled the speculation that it will be Michael’s last race. For now, MWR Vice President and GM Ty Norris and COO Cal Wells’ say that the teams will remain status quo for 2009. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing president Steve Lauletta says he expects to have Aric Almirola back in the #8 Chevy by mid-August if sponsorship can be secured. Lauletta echoed MWR’s sentiments that Truex will not be departing from the #1 Chevy before season’s end.(FoxSports)(6-30-2009)

Germain Racing sponsor Ventrilo adds two more races in 2009: Ventrilo, a product of Flagship Industries and the premier group voice communications program used in internet-based tournaments and multiplayer games, announced today that it has expanded its primary sponsorship of the #30 Ventrilo Tundra to include O’Reilly Raceway Park as well as the previously scheduled Bristol Motor Speedway and Gateway International Raceway NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. In addition, Ventrilo will be the primary sponsor this weekend at Daytona International Speedway for Germain Racing’s #15 Ventrilo Toyota Camry driven by Iowa-native Michael Annett.(Germain Racing PR)(6-30-2009)

The future of series in doubt? UPDATE 2: NASCAR VP says series strong; looking at cost-cutting options: Promoter Bruton Smith and NASCAR president Mike Helton are reported to be meeting Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway over the uncertain future of NASCAR’s Truck series, with increasing speculation that the tour – 25 races this season, on 16 Sprint Cup tour tracks and seven other tracks – will be severely cut next season. Indeed even the survival of the Truck series, which was created in 1995 by the late Bill France Jr. as a budget-priced ‘proving ground’ for new car owners, new sponsors and new drivers, has been questioned. General Motors, Ford and Dodge have all withdrawn financial support of the Truck tour and the Nationwide tour, leaving only Toyota officially involved. Toyota officials have reportedly decided to drop their financial support too, though Toyota racing boss Lee White insists no decision has been made. One suggestion to help save the Truck series has been for the four NASCAR car makers to work together to design an inexpensive ’spec’ Truck engine, to cut costs. Another suggestion has been a ‘common’ engine for all three NASCAR touring series.(mikemulhern.net)(6-27-2009)
UPDATE: During an interview on SPEEDtv’s NCTWS setup program, NASCAR VP Steve O’Donnell said the state of the series is “really strong.” O’Donnell stated that NASCAR officials met with team owners earlier this year to help out the racing with some rule changes, they have been working with the teams, and that the series puts on the “best racing”. When asked about double-file restarts, O’Donnell said that the series has two weeks off following Memphis, and that NASCAR will continue to look at it. [Also heard that O'Donnell addressed the state of the series during the Drivers Meeting in Memphis, assuring teams that NASCAR is full speed ahead for 2010. He also said that NASCAR is excited by new owners and drivers and the new tracks coming on line next year.](6-27-2009)
UPDATE 2: Despite reports from independent blogger Mike Mulhern, NASCAR Vice President of Communications Jim Hunter says emphatically that there is no validity to a story circulating that the Camping World Truck Series will shut down. We’ve never given up on a series and we’re not going to start now.” NASCAR is looking at options to reduce costs such as decreasing the schedule, increasing the number of single-day dates and bringing back the half-time pit stops that could eliminate the traveling crews to five or six members. One possible solution that is off the table is the use of crate engines. NASCAR VP of Competition Robin Pemberton said they are not a viable option because “they’re not durable to last much beyond one race” which would raise costs, not lower them. Pemberton feels the sanctioning body has made “good gains with new rules and regulations” and the series “still makes sense.”(FoxSports.com)(6-30-2009)

The Milwaukee Mile’s financial mess has NASCAR’s attention. In documents obtained by the Journal Sentinel, NASCAR states that Wisconsin Motorsports, the race promoter at the Mile, owes it $1,878,228 for the two races NASCAR sanctioned earlier this month. The documents include an agreement that Napier signed in which he states that he is unable to pay in full the fees due NASCAR for sanctioning the races. As part of the agreement Napier signed, all of the revenue generated by the two races was sent directly to NASCAR. The documents include a letter written by a NASCAR lawyer to all Milwaukee Mile vendors, concessionaires, program sellers, and food and beverage sellers telling them the money they owe to Wisconsin Motorsports was instead coming to NASCAR. Napier signed the agreement on June 18, just a day before the truck race was scheduled to take place. On June 19, however, heavy rains postponed the truck race a day. Both the truck race and the Nationwide Series race were contested on June 20.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(6-30-2009)

Hornaday steady; Braun, Starr make significant gains in points race: What many call the toughest stretch of racing on the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule has ended. In Wimbledon terms, Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 Longhorn Chevrolet) held serve. Hornaday, the leader by 84 points entering five consecutive weekends of racing in late May, remains in the #1 position. He leads Matt Crafton (#88 Menards Chevrolet) by 76 points. The points leader, however, isn’t the only one to watch when racing resumes July 18 at Kentucky Speedway. The Dover-to-Memphis swing significantly shook up top-10 rankings. Three competitors – Colin Braun (#6 Con-way Freight Ford), Tayler Malsam (#81 One-Eighty Toyota) and David Starr (#24 Zachry/Harris Trucking Toyota) – moved into the elite grouping. Braun, on the strength of his victory at Michigan International Speedway, made the biggest gain from 19th to 10th. After finishing 22nd at Dover, the 20-year-old Roush Fenway driver reeled off four straight top-10 finishes. Starr, a 12-year veteran of the series, is enjoying his best season since 2006. Driving for Virginian James Harris, the Houston native scored top-10 finishes in four of his five most recent starts, including thirds at Memphis and Dover. He was 13th after the Lowe’s race and stands fifth in current standings, just 231 points behind leader Hornaday.(NASCAR PR)
