Track Trash – Left Right Left Right
by: Racing Maniac

It was a relief not to have a fuel race for a change.

The end was almost a tad boring because the top 3 cars were evenly matched, but at least the winner actually won the race.

And the trophy will arrive home in one piece………

Sprint Cup Race Recap
Kahne Wins A Wild One At Infineon Raceway
by Phil Allaway

In the Sprint Cup Series, road racing is a rarity. Since 1988, the series has only held two road races a season. Some fans claim that Sprint Cup cars are not designed for road courses, and thus, should not race on them. Sunday’s race might have proved those fans wrong.

The new rules brought double-file restarts to Infineon Raceway for the very first time and created borderline chaos at times. The action on track was feverish, especially towards the end of the race.

Kasey Kahne gained the lead on lap 80 on the restart from the third caution by passing the No. 87 of Scott Speed (driving in place of Joe Nemechek). From that point on, he had to hold off what amounted to a pack of wolves. As the race continued on, drivers became more and more impatient and resorted to old fashioned methods to get by rivals. These old school tactics resulted in four more cautions, mainly due to wrecks, or leftovers from wrecks (one caution was for debris from the wrecked No. 02 of Brandon Ash). Each caution resulted in a double-file restart that gave the pack another chance at Kahne.

However, Kahne, who even admitted on the radio at one point that road racing goes against everything he learned about racing, was able to hold off the late race charge by Tony Stewart and Marcos Ambrose on a Green-White-Checker to win the Toyota Save Mart 350k.

After the race ended, Kahne was very happy with the result. “[The victory] feels great,” Kahne said in the post-race press conference. “I’ve had issues here in the past with finishing anywhere on this course, so to qualify good … and then race really strong today was the first time that I’ve been able to pull that off.”

In second, behind Kahne was Tony Stewart. “I’m happy with [our run] compared to where we were yesterday in both the race practices,” Stewart said in the post-race press conference. “We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but it seemed like once we got 15, 20 laps into the run, we were one of the fastest cars on the track.”

In third was Marcos Ambrose, who qualified in the same position but had to come up from the rear of the field because of a blown engine in the first practice session on Saturday. Fourth was Jimmie Johnson with a personal best finish at Infineon and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 5. Juan Pablo Montoya finished sixth, followed by A.J. Allmendinger and Clint Bowyer. Jeff Gordon and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top 10.

This race will undoubtedly be remembered for all the wild antics towards the end of the race and the double file restarts. Patrick Carpentier, who drove in place of Michael Waltrip to an 11th place finish, described it best. He simply said, “Man, those double-file restarts are crazy!”

Point Standings (Top 12)

Tony Stewart’s run to second place on Sunday allowed him to expand his lead to 84 points over Jeff Gordon. Gordon finished ninth on Sunday, which was quite remarkable because at one point, Gordon had to serve a pass through penalty for speeding on pit road under green. Jimmie Johnson maintains the third position after a fourth place finish. Johnson also got busted for speeding on pit road early and had to serve a pass through penalty that put him near the rear of the field. Kurt Busch is still fourth, but had to make a big comeback just to finish 15th. On lap 90, Busch was racing for the fourth spot with Jimmie Johnson in the esses when contact between the two sent Busch spinning into the tires.

Carl Edwards gained a spot and is now fifth in the standings after a 13th place finish. He is now only 33 points behind Kurt Busch. Just five points behind Edwards is Ryan Newman. Newman had an ok run Sunday, but spun out late in the race and finished 17th. Denny Hamlin is up three positions to seventh this week after a fifth place finish. Greg Biffle is just 17 points behind Hamlin in eighth. Biffle ran ok on Sunday until a spin coming out of Turn 7 resulted in contact with the wall. Biffle eventually finished 28th.

Kyle Busch is still ninth after a tough day. Kyle was up front until he wrecked Sam Hornish, Jr. in Turn 7, taking himself and Brian Vickers out as well. This required a pit stop under green that cost him a lap. Another costly spin nearly cost him a lap with 15 laps to go. To come back from that to finish 22nd was an accomplishment. Matt Kenseth is 10th, followed by Mark Martin, who had problems all day. An unscheduled pit stop due to a flat right rear tire put him off-sequence, then a wreck on the final restart put him back to a 35th place finish. Juan Pablo Montoya rounds out the top 12. Sunday’s race winner, Kasey Kahne, is just three points outside of the top 12 in 13th.

Tracking The Top 35

There was no movement in or out of the Top 35 as a result of the wild race on Sunday at Infineon Raceway. However, due to the fact that Scott Speed failed to qualify the No. 82 for the Red Bull Racing Team on Friday afternoon, the positions have solidified themselves even more.

Front Row Motorsports’ No. 34 had serious speed issues all weekend. John Andretti had the slowest practice time on Friday, and the third slowest time in qualifying. Due to a quirky collision with the No. 71 of David Gilliland, the team did not get to practice at all on Saturday due to damage to the Taco Bell Chevrolet. On Sunday, Andretti drove a steady race and finished on the lead lap in 30th. This expanded the margin over the No. 82 in owners’ points to 90 points.

The No. 7 for Robby Gordon Motorsports typically runs very well at Infineon Raceway. However, pit strategy killed the No. 7 on Sunday. The lap that Robby Gordon was planning on making his final pit stop, the third caution flew for Bobby Labonte’s spin. Gordon, who was leading at the time, was effectively finished. A crash coming to the white flag with Jeff Burton and Mark Martin dropped him to a 36th place finish. This closed the margin between the No. 7 in 34th and the No. 34 in 35th to 140 points.

Kahne Wins At Infineon

Photo Jonathan Ferrey/Getty Images
Kasey Kahne Doing Doughnuts
In the final 38 laps of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, Kasey Kahne drove his Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge like it was stolen and he was headed to Mexico. Tony Stewart and Marcos Ambrose were in hot pursuit — but Kahne kept a level head and a steady foot to win his first ever road course race. It also was Kahne’s first victory this season and the 10th of his 196 race career. Kahne delivered the first win for Richard Petty Motorsports. Kahne’s 38 laps led were the most of any driver. The race came down to a green-white-checkers finish and restart after restart, Kahne was keen enough to get the jump on Stewart and Ambrose. Jimmie Johnson, who was caught for speeding on an early pit stop, battled back to fourth place. Denny Hamlin led 33 laps but had to settle for fifth spot. Juan Montoya finished sixth followed by A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon and Elliott Sadler to round out the top ten. Tony Stewart extended his lead over Jeff Gordon in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points.

The next race on the Sprint Cup schedule – the 17th event of 36-races for the 2009 Sprint Cup Championship. The Lenox Tools 3000 will be on Sunday June 28th, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. The race begins at approximately 12:30 PM. eastern time — with live, high-definition coverage provided by TNT beginning with its pre-race show at 12:00 p.m. eastern time. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and MRN radio.

What’s up with Roush’s five teams? Roush Fenway Racing President Geoff Smith on the team cutting from five teams to four after this season (as mandated by NASCAR to meet its four-car limit): “We’re still messing with the sponsorship pieces,’’ Smith said. “We’re still not sure how it’s going to lay out. We thought we’d be done by now but we’re not.’’ One of the teams will move to Yates next year, Smith said. Smith also was asked about the status of signing Jamie McMurray to a contract extension: “Jamie wants to stay. We’d like him to stay. We’re hoping we can have sponsorship around Jamie before he has to decide how much longer he can wait. We’ve been working together. Hopefully we’ll have that worked out pretty quickly before he has to turn his attention to the marketplace.’’(Virginia Pilot)(6-22-2009) Comment here

Kahne to Toyota? by Chicago? Speculation is increasing that Dodge driver #9-Kasey Kahne, who runs for Richard Petty, could switch to a Toyota by the July 11th Sprint Cup race at Chicago. Petty has said that Chrysler has cut its payments to his four-car operation, and apparently Petty has only enough engine parts for one of the new Dodge NASCAR engines. Petty’s business partner, George Gillett, tried last season to make a deal with Toyota. There is no immediate comment from Toyota officials.(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009)

RCR to scale back to two teams? There is speculation that Chevy team owner Richard Childress may have to cut back to a two-car operation next season, if the Shell [#29-Harvick]and Jack Daniels [#07-Casey Mears] sponsorships are not renewed. Childress says he intends to have four Cup teams again next year, but conceded sponsorship issues remain to be resolved. Childress, through the Winston-Salem law firm Womble, Carlyle, has filed legal papers over what he says is GM’s non-payment of a bill of $2,538,750. Childress insists he’s not suing GM over its failure to make that payment due June 15th. That bill would apparently be a scheduled quarterly payment, part of a $10 million a year Chevrolet sponsorship for Childress’ four-team operation.(mikemulhern.net)(6-22-2009)

Keselowski to talk to Hendrick about Cup move: Rick Hendrick said he plans to meet with Nationwide Series driver Brad Keselowski this week to discuss his plans for moving up to Sprint Cup in 2010. Hendrick mentioned two possible options for Keselowski — a third car at Stewart-Haas Racing, which is affiliated with Hendrick Motorsports, or a chance to stay at JR Motorsports if Dale Earnhardt Jr. decides to move his Nationwide team to Cup next year. “We’re looking at different options with some of our external situations with other teams,” Hendrick said Sunday at Infineon Raceway. “I told Brad that I want him to have the best opportunity. If we can’t give it to him, then I want him to have the best.” Keselowski told reporters at that event that he would love to drive a third Stewart-Haas car next year. Tony Stewart said Friday a third car for his team is a possibility for 2010. Stewart’s team is a satellite operation with Hendrick Motorsports, leasing engines from Hendrick. Hendrick also said Earnhardt Jr. is considering moving his Nationwide operation to Cup in 2010. Either way, Keselowski would stay in the Hendrick family, so to speak, if he signed with Stewart-Haas Racing or stayed at JR Motorsports. “Brad wants to do something that is somehow associated with our company,” Hendrick said. “We’re working on it and hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll have something sorted out. He’ll be running Cup [in 2010]. Whether he’ll be running them all or whether he’ll be running 75% of them or what, I don’t know.”(ESPN)(6-22-2009)

More on Red Bull Manufacturer: Red Bull Racing driver #83-Brian Vickers has won back-to-back poles in a Toyota Camry, but to hear his boss talk, it doesn’t sound like that will make a difference on whether Red Bull remains a Toyota team. Red Bull is in its final year of its Toyota contract, and there has been speculation that Red Bull, could move to Chevrolet (without manufacturer support). But wouldn’t two consecutive poles make the team brass think twice about going to a new manufacturer, especially after being one of Toyota’s initial teams when it entered Cup in 2007? “Ask them,” Red Bull Racing general manager Jay Frye said at Infineon Raceway Saturday. “Obviously Toyota has been great to us. We’ve been one of their freshman teams and all that. We appreciate everything they’re doing and continue to do. We’re going through lots of different scenarios right now. There’s a lot going on in the world and it’s been reported that our deal is up with them at the end of the year and it’s possible they don’t want us to come back, right? It’s possible. Or it’s possible they want us to come back but they can’t for some reason do that. Anything is possible.” Toyota Racing Development senior vice president Dave Wilson said the manufacturer wants to continue the relationship with Red Bull and there have been discussions to extend the relationship. There have been reductions in Toyota’s total racing budget, but Wilson said the manufacturer wants to have 10-12 cars on the track. “We have a great deal of loyalty to those guys,” Wilson said. “They slogged it out in the tough entry period in ’07 and obviously we should have notched a couple of victories with Red Bull. We’re certainly not looking to change that.” Frye said there is no time frame to make a decision. The other contract Red Bull needs to get finalized is the one for Vickers. Frye indicated that everything just needs a look in the corporate offices in Austria. “Everything is agreed, done, just the legalese stuff and things like that are going on right now. There’s no [issues],” Frye said.(SceneDaily)(6-22-2009)

Gibbs is still open to the idea of four Sprint Cup teams if the sponsorship can be found for 2010 by the end of the summer. “We can still plug in a fourth team,” Gibbs said Sunday at Infineon Raceway. “The problem is from an economy standpoint. You can probably get a few [sponsors] to mix and match, but we don’t have a full fourth ready to go from a sponsor standpoint. We’re in no hurry. If we have to wait a year, that’s fine. You have got to have the right driver, the right core group and the right sponsor. But if that happened, we could do it pretty quick. I wouldn’t cross it off for next year but at the same time we’re not going to force it.” When asked if that fourth car could be Indy Racing League star Danica Patrick, Gibbs laughed. JGR uses IMG to help it find sponsors and Danica is represented by IMG. “I don’t know what she wants to do,” Gibbs said. “Does she want to still run what she’s running and dip her toe in the water, does she want to do the whole thing? … I think it would be great for the sport wherever she goes. I don’t think she would want to be part of a [new] fourth team [here].” In addition to a fourth team, JGR also could become a vendor for other teams. JGR did not have a successful affiliate/vendor program with Hall of Fame Racing from 2006-2008, and Gibbs said if JGR did it in the future, it would be a closer relationship. Gibbs said the team management would have to decide whether such an arrangement would be simply for profit or help the organization run better. He also thinks that adding a fourth team would be more of a priority.(SceneDaily)(6-22-2009)

Toyota appears ready to withdraw its financial support of NASCAR Truck and Nationwide teams, though continuing engineering support, in the wake of General Motors’ decision to join Ford and Chrysler in withdrawing all but engineering support for those two NASCAR tours. St. Louis Race track crash kills 1, hurts 2: Police said Sunday a 47-year-old man was killed and two other injured Saturday night when a race car flipped off the track and slammed into the pit area at St. Francois County Raceway. Police withheld the man’s identity, saying they weren’t sure whether his nearest relatives had been notified. Two others also were injured, including the driver of the race car that lost control.(St Louis Post Dispatch)(6-22-2009)

Red Bull is in its last year of a three-year contract with Toyota and that’s led to a report that the team could switch manufacturers to Chevrolet and receive equipment from Hendrick Motorsports, as Stewart-Haas Racing does. The team fields cars for Brian Vickers, who is starting on the pole for today’s race, and rookie Scott Speed. “We’re going through lots of different scenarios right now,” said Jay Frye, the team’s general manager. “It’s possible they won’t want us to come back. It’s possible. Or it’s possible that they want us to come back but they can’t for some reason do that. Anything is possible at this point. They’ve been a great partner. We’ll see here shortly what’s the next step.”(Roanoke Times)(6-21-2009)

SCCA Driver dies in in wreck: Thomas Thrash Jr., 48, of Houston, Texas, was pronounced dead late Saturday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital (Sheboygan, Wis.). Thrash was involved in a single-car incident Saturday at Road America during the Sports Car Club of America-sanctioned Chicago Region June Sprints event. The cause of death is under investigation. Witnesses reported that Thrash lost control of his E Production class Mazda RX-7 before Turn Eight, with the car entering the gravel trap and coming to rest against the tire wall. A 12-year veteran driver in SCCA competition, Thrash was the 2007 SCCA National Champion in E Production and a two-time Runoffs polesitter. Thrash had qualified his car on the pole position for Saturday afternoon’s race before the incident. “We are deeply saddened to have lost Tom Thrash, a great champion and individual that epitomized the spirit and competition of SCCA racing, and most importantly, a member of our SCCA family,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”(Road America site)(6-21-2009)

Edwards plans another full season in 2010: Five consecutive seasons of running the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series schedules full time apparently isn’t enough for Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards. After earning his first NASCAR Nationwide Series victory of the season at the Milwaukee Mile, Edwards said he plans on running full time in the series again in 2010.(Scene Daily)(6-21-2009)

Latest on Double File Restarts: Double-file restarts for the leaders, a two-week old procedure for Sprint Cup, probably will become practice in the Nationwide Series within the next month. “We’re just taking our time,” series director Joe Balash said. “We don’t see any red flags with what we’ve seen in the Cup Series, and we think it’s something we can implement with everything we have here and provide a little more excitement for the fans.” NASCAR’s policy was to have lead-lap cars in one lane for a restart and lapped cars in the other. Now the leader of the race has the option to start at the front of the inside or outside line, and the other drivers on the lead lap follow in order.(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)(6-21-2009)

Ken Smith, co-owner of SS Green Light Racing is pleased to have Young in the No. 07. “We have been impressed with Jason from the first time we talked to him and Bobby was very upbeat following the test. Right now this is a one-race deal for Memphis and we are hoping that things go well and we can have Jason back in one of our trucks later in the year.” He continued, “Chad McCumbee is still the primary driver of the SS Green Light No. 07 team.
