GM Cuts To Extend To Sprint Cup Operations
In a move that surprised no one, General Motors met with representatives from Hendrick Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing Wednesday to inform them of impending financial cuts to their racing budget. GM had previously announced over the weekend it would trim funding going to several Nationwide and Truck Series teams, setting the stage for a similar “doomsday” scenario at NASCAR’s highest level. While the company would not confirm the scope and degree of cuts, an official release Wednesday made it clear a tightening of the pocketbook is imminent.
“Chevrolet’s involvement in racing is a sound business decision that translates directly into the sale of cars and trucks,” a GM spokesperson said. “It is essential; however, that we continue to look at every penny we spend as General Motors takes the necessary steps to become a leaner company with a significantly stronger balance sheet. While Chevy Racing is talking to its business partners about ways to reduce cost and maximize the return on investment, it is our policy to not talk about the details of business relationships with our partners.”
Currently, Chevrolet funds over a dozen cars at the Sprint Cup level, including ten for big-money cars at Hendrick, Stewart-Haas, and Richard Childress Racing. While those teams are expected to take a significant financial hit, all of them seem poised to stand behind the Bowtie Brigade as they continue the restructuring process to make themselves a profitable company once more.
“We had very productive conversations this week with the folks at General Motors, and it’s clear they are committed to racing and committed to our organization,” Rick Hendrick told ThatsRacin.com Wednesday. “They’ve asked us for some help, and we’re going to give it to them.”
No word on whether the automaker will sever all ties with some of its smaller teams at the Cup level, such as Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s two-car operation and Furniture Row.

Benson Released From Hospital
Defending NASCAR Truck series champion Johnny Benson was released from the hospital Tuesday and is home recovering from injuries sustained in a crash Saturday at Berlin Raceway, according to a note on his fan site. Benson was competing in an International Supermodified Association Super Modified race at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Mich. According to the Web site for WZZM 13, an ABC television affiliate in Grand Rapids, Mich., Benson and another driver touched entering Turn 4 on the first lap of the featured race, sending Benson spinning and crashing driver’s side into the outside wall. Benson’s car reportedly came to rest in the middle of the track, where it was engulfed in flames before safety crews arrived. Benson, who recently parted ways with his Red Horse Racing Truck team, told local television station WOOD TV8 that he had broken his collarbone in two places, his wrist and three ribs. He also cracked his scapula, the bone connecting the arm to the shoulder, as well as suffering “bumps and bruises” and burns on his elbow.
Parts Supplier Sues Mayfield
Suspended owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield’s Mayfield Motorsports Inc. has been sued for $86,304.55 for parts, pieces and chassis work. Triad Racing Technologies and BDR Acquisition are suing Mayfield in North Carolina Superior Court in Charlotte. The suit was filed last Wednesday. Both companies share the same address, and their registered agent with the state of North Carolina is TRT co-owner Mike Held, who was one of the people who bought the assets of Bill Davis Racing and his chassis/engine shop Triad Racing Development. The suit claims that on Jan. 22, Mayfield requested parts from BDR Acquisition for his new Sprint Cup team but later requested to return the parts rather than pay for them and then returned only a portion of the parts. Mayfield also asked for some paint work to be done. He owes $79,763.95 for those services, according to the lawsuit. Triad Racing Technologies did chassis work for Mayfield, and TRT claims that Mayfield owes $6,540.60.

GM to cut back on Sprint Cup: General Motors will reduce its financial support in the Sprint Cup series, officials from several Chevrolet teams confirmed on Wednesday. Hendrick Motorsports, Stewart Haas Racing, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and Richard Childress Racing officials said they have been asked to participate in cutbacks by the U.S. auto manufacturer that recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Officials did not say how large the cuts would be. “We had very productive conversations this week with the folks at General Motors, and it’s clear they are committed to racing and committed to our organization,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports in a statement. “They’ve asked us for some help, and we’re going to give it to them. We’re proud to be a Chevy team, and we will do our part to support the new GM both on and off the racetrack.”
Tony Stewart, the co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing and Sprint Cup point leader, echoed Hendrick’s sentiments. “We have been, and will continue to be, strong supporters of GM and its Chevrolet brand,” he said. “These are tough times for our auto industry, and in light of what’s happening to them and how it affects all the people who make a living building and selling cars and trucks, the sacrifices we’ll have to make as a race team are pretty weak in comparison. We believe in the products GM has now and in the products they’re building for the future. We’re proud to carry the Chevy bowtie on the hoods of our racecars, and we support GM in this time of uncertainty because we know they’ll be an even stronger company in the years to come.” Stewart said the cutbacks will force teams to review their budgets, but “it will not impact our preparation for the track or the return on investment we provide for our partners.” The cutbacks come a week after GM cut all support from its Nationwide Series and Truck Series teams.(ESPN)(6-18-2009)
Infineon Rookie Notes: #20-Joey Logano was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the June 7 LifeLock 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Logano scored a 25th-place finish and grabbed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the sixth consecutive race and for the 12th time this season. Logano leads #82-Scott Speed by 19 points (168-149) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the June 21 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Juan Pablo Montoya won the 2007 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway as a Raybestos Rookie. Montoya scored the first victory of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career in the race, crossing the finish line 4.097 seconds ahead of second-place Kevin Harvick. Only two Raybestos Rookies have led a lap in 20 previous NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Infineon Raceway: Montoya (once for seven laps) and Scott Pruett (twice for 10 laps in 2000). Montoya is the only Raybestos Rookie winner in 20 races at Infineon Raceway. He is also the only freshman driver to score a top-five finish. The best start by a Raybestos Rookie at Infineon Raceway is second, shared by Jerry Nadeau (1998) and Tony Stewart (1999).(Camp & Assoc./Raybestos)
Sponsor search for 2010: We’ve been hearing for months that sponsors, including those at top teams such as Hendrick Motorsports, won’t fully commit past this season. Team owner Rick Hendrick made that clearer on Sunday when he indicated that Kellogg’s and Carquest may not return in their full capacity in 2010. “Our sponsors are coming back,” Hendrick said after Martin won at Michigan. “We don’t know to what extent. That’s the question. As you go along with this economy companies are taking longer to get their budgets in line. They’re not a year out, or not even eight months like they have been in the past. We’re in good shape. We have a lot of sponsors inside our company that we’re talking about, you know, splitting up the car. So look for the guys that are on it to be back, but there will probably be someone new along there with them.” That not only goes for the #5, but the #24 of Jeff Gordon and #88 of Dale Earnhardt Jr. also could have more partners next season. Jimmie Johnson and Lowe’s appear solid on the #48. The same sort of restructuring is going on at other organizations such as Roush, which is trying to find multiple partners to lessen the load of DeWalt [of #17 Matt Kenseth].(ESPN Insider)(6-18-2009)
McGriff, 81, Ready for Return to Infineon Raceway: Eighty-one year old Hershel McGriff has had enough of retirement, and the legendary driver will make his return behind the wheel at Infineon Raceway for the Bennett Lane Winery 200, presented by Supercuts, on Saturday, June 20. McGriff walked away from racing in 2002, but he will compete in three road-course events on this year’s NASCAR Camping World Series West schedule, including the series’ only stop in Sonoma. If McGriff takes the checkered flag, he would become the oldest driver to ever win in one of NASCAR’s premier series. McGriff has reason to be excited about making his return at the Sonoma Valley road course. He has earned four West Series victories at Infineon Raceway (1983, ’85, ’87, ’89) and still has the track record for most West Series poles with three. Perhaps best known for his talent on a road course, it’s only natural that McGriff makes his return at the road-course events. McGriff’s racing career is one that pre-dates NASCAR and spans seven decades of racing. His first race was at 17 years of age after his family moved to Portland and from there his career took off. McGriff was presented with the NASCAR Award of Excellence and named one of the 50 Greatest Drivers in NASCAR in 1998. He was also inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame in its inaugural year in 2003. McGriff’s popularity among fans was indicated by the record 12 consecutive years (1981-1992), that he was named the Most Popular Driver in the NASCAR Camping World Series West.(Infineon Raceway), McGridd also has four Sprint Cup wins in 85 races from 1950-1993.(6-17-2009)

NASCAR still needs American car manufacturers By Steve Waid
Sunday at Michigan, NASCAR Chief Executive Officer Brain France said that the sanctioning body has maintained contact with foreign-based automakers not yet in the sport. Given the financial troubles experienced by the American auto industry, and in light of General Motors’ planned cuts of its support of all three major NASCAR series, the timing seemed perfect.

Jeff Gordon’s take: Engine legend Doug Yates has it all “absolutely backwards” by Mike Mulhern
Now here’s one for the books, some food for thought: Chevy’s Jeff Gordon says that veteran Ford engine builder Doug Yates is full of it, for Yates’ recommendation that NASCAR cut horsepower from these Sprint Cup cars to make for better racing and better tire wear. But then maybe some of that comes from the fact that Gordon’s team owner – Rick Hendrick – has won eight of the Cup tour’s last 10 events. With a record like that, why ask for changes.

Father’s Day Frolics … This year NASCAR drivers and their fathers will celebrate Father’s Day at Infineon Raceway. Prior to making the trip to his home state, Casey Mears, and his father, Roger, shared some of their favorite memories with Ask.com, the official search engine of NASCAR. From a family of racing greats, the driver of the Jack Daniel’s Chevrolet won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the age of 29. But his father, Roger, recalls Casey racing at two-years-old. ”One of my earliest memories is when Casey would sit for hours racing his little Hot Wheels cars,” explained the elder Mears. From their abundant father-son stories, Roger recalls a last-minute fishing trip he and a then five-year-old Casey took where, despite chasing crickets for bait, falling in the river and losing their fishing rods, they still had a blast. Casey recently became a father himself and Roger says that has been one of his proudest moments. “He is such a good dad and is all about that little girl,” added Mears. “Sam is the apple of Casey’s eye and I’m really proud about how he is as a father.” For more of this story, search “NASCAR Father’s Day” at Ask.com.

Former NASCAR Manager Named Director of Information Technology for Keeneland
Lexington, KY (June 16, 2009) – In an effort to further enhance its fan outreach and customer service capabilities, Keeneland officials today announced Brad Lovell, previously Managing Director of Information Technology for NASCAR Inc., as the company’s Director of Information Technology.
In his new position at Keeneland, Lovell will be responsible for working with management to establish the overall technology direction for Keeneland in both strategic and technical terms, and for furthering Keeneland’s mission to provide innovation and leadership in the horse industry.
Lovell joins Keeneland following six years with NASCAR, where he established the strategic direction of IT services for that $500 million sports and entertainment company. At NASCAR, Lovell brought several innovations to the sport, including a system to “freeze the field” when race cautions are initiated, designing and deploying two mobile data centers to provide a technology platform at the race track, and automating many of the business processes.
“Brad’s experience with NASCAR – widely respected for its fan-friendly technology and promotional savvy – will help us expand opportunities for our clients, sponsors, media and, most importantly, our fans,” said Keeneland President & CEO Nick Nicholson. “NASCAR is at the forefront in terms of cutting-edge technology, broadcast graphics display and database use to reach its audience. We are excited to apply Brad’s skills in exploring new, innovative means for racing to better connect with its customers.”
“I am very excited to be joining Keeneland,” Lovell said. “Having grown up in Lexington, I know that horse racing fans are very passionate about the sport. I look forward to finding ways to enhance their experience and grow racing through innovation. NASCAR taught me the importance of understanding issues from multiple perspectives. At Keeneland, we will want to obtain input from fans, owners, breeders, trainers, jockeys, and others on how we can provide continuous improvement in the sport.”
Prior to his position with NASCAR, Lovell served as Director of Information Resources for Brown-Forman Distillery Company and as Director of Store Systems for Rally’s Hamburgers Incorporated, both based in Louisville, Kentucky.

Bobby Labonte, driver of the No. 96 Ask.com Ford Fusion talks about what it would be like to win at a road course
“My memory of a person winning on a road course is Dale Earnhardt. I don’t think he’d ever won at one and when he finally won – I think it was at Sonoma, might have been Watkins Glen – he took the steering wheel with him because that’s the trophy. If you think about the road course, about a driver being a major part of making it work. I think that is a huge key. It’s a driver’s track so when you win there, there’s a level of, ‘man, we just one this race,’ and you want to pat yourself on the back more so than you might anywhere else. It’s about a driver a lot of times (at a road course) and how you drive that track and the finesse that you have and that’s what makes it worth while. When I saw him take the steering wheel I kind of had a double take like, ‘Wonder what happened, why’d he take the steering wheel? Oh, that’s his trophy’. I would say, yeah, I’ve got to take this steering wheel and put it on my mantel. That’s my trophy because you drove the wheels off it that day.”

This time last week, Todd Bodine and the #30 Tundra crew were without a sponsor for Friday’s Copart 200 at The Milwaukee Mile. Milwaukee was added for the Copart Tundra, and this weekend Copart will reveal another race that’s been added to the #30 Copart Tundra program.(Germain Racing PR)(6-16-2009)

Scott suffers broken wrist; will compete at Milwaukee: The hard crash sustained last Saturday by Brian Scott on lap 8 of the Michigan 200 at Michigan International Speedway did more than destroy Scott’s No. 16 Toyota Tundra chassis. It also broke a bone in the right wrist of the 21-year-old NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competitor. Despite the injury Scott will still compete in this Friday night’s Copart 200 NCWTS event at the Milwaukee Mile. “I knew as soon as I hit the wall something was wrong,” Scott said. “Usually with all the adrenaline flowing through you when you are competing on the racetrack you don’t feel any pain, but in this case my wrist hurt right away. I was hoping for the best, maybe that I had just banged it up. As more time passed after the wreck it felt more and more like a broken bone. It was the hardest hit of my career and the steering just yanked out of my hand. Usually I try and let go of the wheel if I know I am going to hit the wall hard but in this situation I didn’t have time. You have to commend NASCAR on the safety measures they have put in place. I am fortunate to have an injury that I can deal with and still compete effectively. We will go to Milwaukee and make the most of the situation.”(Xpress Motorsports PR)(6-16-2009)
Almirola returns to #15 at The Milwaukee Mile: Aric Almirola will take to the track at Milwaukee Mile Friday, June 19, 2009 in the #15 Zaxby’s NASCAR Camping World Series truck at Milwaukee. Richie Wauters is the crew chief for the #15 Zaxby’s Toyota. (Billy Ballew Motorsports PR)(6-16-2009)

Some Thoughts About Racism & NASCAR
No matter how hard it tries to shake the stigma, it seems that some people still look at NASCAR and its fans as Confederate Flag waving, racist rednecks from the South.
