‘No grip’ yada yada.
‘Save fuel’ yada yada. ‘Oooops’…… |
GM: What a turn-around from years past. Instead of racing in Michigan to showcase the Big Three manufacturers, thanks to our gracious President and his Democratic dweebs in Congress, this year we can cheer our own Government Motors to the winners circle. Yes, whether you are a died in the wool Ford or Chrysler fan, we all now own a piece of GM, and will be owning it for quite some time.
Chrysler: It sounds like some of the Dodge teams may bail out and opt for either GM or Ford engines. There’s still enough time left in this racing year for the switch to happen now, rather than later. So has the Big Three problems effected NA$CAR ?? You betch yer bippy…….
Rustard: Rusty Wallace just advised us that he is not going to jump up to Cup quite yet. I think he’s still not happy with the COT, and not happy with the prospects that in its present format, it may cost him a ton of money to get competitive. So, waiting until the rumored tuning of the COT happens might work out to his benefit. It also allows him more time to see if his son (Steve) can hack it in the Big Leagues. Steve reminds me of another driver…..Buckshot Jones. Both could be considered loose cannons on the race track, and drivers that demand a lot of attention……because everyone is trying to get away from the pending wreck.
Half full or half empty?: Actually, the stands seemed to be about 60% filled today, so there were a lot of empties. Most of ‘em were in the chicken bone section, the ‘cheap seats’, so something doesn’t smell right. You’d think that in this economy, the cheap seats would go first. Hey, maybe MIS cut them some slack and let the cheap seat holders move up to other empty seats.
Da race: If you ask me, most of the race was a tad boring. I mean, we were pelted with the ‘no grip’ mentality from nearly every driver, we were keeping tabs on Jr., we watched JJ tool around in the lead for nearly 100 straight laps, etc., etc.
The back 40: Not acres, but laps. As one might have suspected, it came down to a fuel race, and the last 40 laps were reasonably good. The last 5 laps were even better, cuz JJ and da Biff were dueling it out for the lead, both running on fumes, and both eventually running out of gas. This allowed SirMark to rumble on by and take the checkers. JJ ran out of gas first, and sank from 1st to 22nd. Da Biff was more fortunate, cuz he was able to coast across the line in 5th place.
So the question now is will the crew chiefs be this willing to take a gamble, especially if it costs going from 1st place to 22nd place? Yes, probably if you’re solidly in the top 12, but perhaps not if you are near the border line in the Playoffs. As much as I dislike fuel races, this was much better than the prospects of JJ taking the lead for the entire race. Just a few more weeks and we get to see a good race (I hope), with the 4th of July race in Daytuna.
