Track Trash – D(oing it) OVER
by: Racing Maniac
Another good race today, especially the last 30 laps.
With Mikey’s poor showing and eventual demise (blown engine), this almost sets him up for announcing his retirement, and for Trueaxle to jump into the NAPA car next year. Gee….another elbow in Teresa’s dainty ribs

GM has to walk fine line in weighing Chevy’s NASCAR investment
By JEFF CAPLAN
Back when the high-banking turns of Texas Motor Speedway existed only in concept, before even the purchase of 1,500 acres of flatland north of Fort Worth, Chevrolet raced to the forefront.
The division of General Motors signed on as the official vehicle sponsor of the superspeedway well before the inaugural 1997 racing season. Now, as NASCAR’s truck circuit and the IndyCar Series return to TMS for this weekend’s annual June showcase, angst over GM’s expected inevitable descent into bankruptcy today is prevalent at TMS and tracks throughout the country.
GM began significant cost-cutting at the end of 2008 when it chose not to renew four of its 12 track sponsorships. TMS general manager Eddie Gossage and Chevy wouldn’t disclose contract specifics, but it’s clear that if the deal is up this year, it’s possible the two partners could drive off in different directions.

Sprint Cup Race Recap
Johnson Recovers From Late Pit Stop To Win Dover
by Phil Allaway
In the Sprint Cup Series today, you can win races in many different ways. Just last week, David Reutimann won the Coca-Cola 600 by using the right pit strategy, while others are a bit more old-fashioned; they run up front all day.
But every once in awhile, we have the perfect storm; having a dominating win get taken away by using the wrong pit strategy.
On Sunday, Jimmie Johnson refused to let either one happen, using a breathtaking late-race charge to surge back to the top of the charts in Sunday’s Autism Speaks 400. Johnson had the fastest car at Dover by far, leading 298 of the 400 laps. But getting back to the lead that final time was not easy. On lap 365, the ninth caution came out because of debris. This brought everyone in for final pit stops, where Johnson’s crew chief Chad Knaus opted to take four tires and fuel.
Turns out it was the wrong call.
“Unfortunately, we had a little hiccup,” Knaus explained. “We felt like we were going to come down pit read leading and be able to leave third or fourth with four fresh tires and make quick work of the guys ahead of us.”
Instead, a slow stop combined with two tire strategies from other drivers (Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman included) left Johnson in eighth place and seemingly out of contention for the win. But in the final 32 laps (including one more caution for David Stremme’s crash), the No. 48 Chevy came back up through the field with surprising ease.
“I was just trying to get what I could,” he explained. “But before I knew it, I was in third.”
After running down leader Tony Stewart from more than three seconds behind in the final 20 laps, Johnson made the pass with two to go and pulled away to claim his second victory of the year. The win was also Johnson’s fourth at the concrete one-mile oval and the 42nd of his career.
“We really had to lean on Jimmie a little bit to carry us out,” summarized Knaus. “And he did a great job.”
In second, slightly less than one second behind Johnson, was new point leader Tony Stewart.
“We had an opportunity. We got to the lead there and got by Biffle and just couldn’t hold off Jimmie,” he said. “He was like a freight train coming. I mean, I was surprised I could hold him off as long as I did, but I was pretty happy that we were able to do it for that long.”
Behind Stewart was Greg Biffle in third, who had won the race off pit road during the last round of pit stops after taking only two tires. Matt Kenseth finished fourth while Kurt Busch rounded out the top 5. Kasey Kahne, using the new Dodge R6P8 engine, finished in sixth after starting second. Carl Edwards finished seventh, followed by Ryan Newman as both Stewart-Haas cars crawled into contention late. Casey Mears tied his season best with a ninth place finish, while Mark Martin rounded out the top 10.
Heading into today’s event, tire problems were expected to be an issue, with teams given a competition caution on lap 31 to check for wear. Luckily, just a handful of issues popped up during the event, most notably when then-second place Denny Hamlin crashed on Lap 223. Tony Raines and Juan Pablo Montoya also blew right front tires, causing yellows.

Johnson Wins Dover Cup Race
CIA Stock Photo
Johnson and Knauss Celebrate Victory
Two of the best drivers in the sport battled for the win at Dover International Speedway in the Autism Speaks 400 and when the dust settled it was Jimmie Johnson over Tony Stewart. After a final restart with 26 laps to go, despite leading the most laps (298 on the day), Johnson was sitting in eighth place and it looked as though he may be trapped in that position. Greg Biffle was leading with Stewart in second. Johnson turned up the wick and fought his way past five of the cars in his way. With 20 to go Johnson passed Kurt Busch for third place and the battle was on. Stewart passed Biffle with nine laps remaining and Johnson followed. Stewart was leading — with Johnson in second place, Johnson was searching around and experimenting with different lines, moving ever closer to Stewart. Three laps to go, the two were nose to tail and with two to go, Johnson passed Stewart on the high side and drove away with the victory.
It was the fourth victory for Johnson at Dover, his second win this year. Johnson recorded his 42nd Sprint Cup Victory in 298 career races. Biffle held onto third place, teammate Matt Kenseth was fourth and Kurt Busch finished fifth. Kasey Kahne nailed down the sixth spot followed by Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Mark Martin to round out the top ten. Tony Stewart moved into the points lead — 46 over second place Jeff Gordon, who finished 26th and 64 over third place in the standings Jimmie Johnson.
The next race on the Sprint Cup schedule – the 14th event of 36-races for the 2009 Sprint Cup Championship. The Pocono 500 will be on Sunday June 7th, at Pocono Raceway in Pocono, Pennsylvania. The race begins at approximately 12:30 p.m. eastern time with live, high-definition coverage provided by TNT beginning with its pre-race show at 12:00 p.m. eastern time. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and PRN radio.

Robby Gordon Will Appeal Penalty
Sprint Cup Series owner/driver Robby Gordon says he will appeal NASCAR penalties levied against his Robby Gordon Motorsports team May 27. Gordon was penalized 50 owner and 50 driver points while crew chief Kirk Almquist was fined $50,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31. Officials said the rear axle housing of the No. 7 Toyota, which was taken following a third-place finish by Gordon in the May 25 Coca-Cola 600, exceeded the maximum specified toe of plus or minus one degree. “The bottom line is we were no more ‘body yawed’ than anybody else,” Gordon said..
Tony Eury Jr. To Oversee Road Course Testing Next Week
Tony Eury Jr. is getting off to a quick start in his new role with Hendrick Motorsports’ research and development group. On Tuesday, Eury will accompany the No. 48 Chevrolet team to Carolina MotorSports Park in Kershaw, S.C., to supervise road course testing with three-time Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. The private two-day session is closed to the public and the media. Eury will lead the effort and refine the No. 48 team’s setup for the June 21 Sprint Cup event at Infineon Raceway — the first road race of the 2009 season. In addition to his research and development duties, Eury will crew chief Hendrick Motorsports’ No. 25 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet Sprint Cup effort with driver Brad Keselowski for the remainder of 2009.

Hendrick doesn’t expect GM Bankruptcy to effect racing: Rick Hendrick met with members of the media at the conclusion of the race at Dover, on item discussed:
CAN YOU DISCUSS GENERAL MOTORS AND WHAT IS EXPECTED TO COME DOWN TOMORROW, JUNE 1ST, AS YOU UNDERSTAND IT?
“From what I’ve heard, and I don’t know a lot more than what you read in the media, but if they do file for Bankruptcy tomorrow, which all indications are that they will, it’s kind of a planned get-in, get-out situation. I’ve got a lot of faith in GM and especially Chevrolet. I’ve been with them for a long, long time. Our business is good; the products are good. And this economic downturn we’ve had has hurt everybody. It’s hurt every manufacturer; Toyota and everybody else. But I think some people, maybe their pockets were deeper than others. But I feel like we’re going to be good and we’re going to be okay. They’ve got great products right now so I’m hoping that if it happens, that they’ll get in and get out in a hurry and we’ll just take it a day at a time.”
DO YOU EXPECT IT TO AFFECT THEIR RACING? “I don’t think so. No, I don’t think so because you see Ford and Toyota and everybody; Chrysler is here. But you just never know. We just have to do the best we can. They’ve been a big asset to this sport and when you look at their competition, the people they’re heads-up with, are here, so I’ve had no indication that they’re going to cut back or do anything.”
IF THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD SAY YOU’VE GOT TO STOP PROMOTING THROUGH RACING IF WE GIVE YOU MONEY. IF CHEVROLET WERE TO SAY THEY CAN’T GIVE YOU ANOTHER CENT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, WOULD YOU CONTINUE TO RACE CHEVROLETS ON YOUR OWN? OR DO YOU HAVE A PLAN “B”? “My Plan A is Chevrolet and my Plan B is Chevrolet and my Plan C is Chevrolet (laughter).”(GM Racing)(6-1-2009)
Double-File restarts at Pocono? NASCAR distributed proposals to crew chiefs regarding possible procedures for double-file restarts which could be introduced as early as Pocono Raceway next week. The proposal states all starts will be double file. The race leader will have his choice of which lane to use for the restart. The third-place car will always start in the inside lane. There will be no changes in the free pass or “lucky dog,” and cars that are one lap down can choose not to pit, therefore regaining a lap during a caution. The new rule appears to be a work in progress but Pocono is a 2.5-miler with plenty of space and opportunity to figure it out.(FoxSports)(6-1-2009)
Said to Compete in West Series Race in Sonoma: Road-race veteran Boris Said has confirmed that he will compete in the Bennett Lane Winery 200, presented by Supercuts, NASCAR Camping World West Series race at Infineon Raceway on Saturday, June 20. Said will drive the #57 entry for DenBeste Motorsports & Biagi Brothers, which is dedicated to the career of legendary Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler. The car features a special silver-and-black paint scheme, with hints of snake-skin colors throughout. Stabler was recently named the Grand Marshal of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend at Infineon Raceway, June 19-21. Said is no stranger to Infineon Raceway and should be one of the favorites when the green flag drops on the Bennett Lane Winery 200. He finished second in the West Series event in Sonoma in 2006 and third in 2007. Moreover, Said won the 1998 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event in Sonoma, and he has also reached the Wine Country Winner’s Circle in a variety of other disciplines. He has four top-10 efforts in nine NASCAR Sprint Cup starts in Sonoma.(Infineon Raceway)(6-1-2009)
Moffitt breaks Logano’s record: Brett Moffitt already broke one of Joey Logano’s NASCAR Camping World Series records. It didn’t take him long to take care of another. Moffitt became the youngest winner in NASCAR Camping World Series history Saturday night with his win in the South Boston 150 at South Boston Speedway. His #44 brettmoffitt.com Chevy led 81 laps – including the last 67 – and outpaced a pair of fellow teenagers in runner-up Ryan Gifford and third-place Ryan Truex.
Moffitt doesn’t turn 17 until August 7. Joey Logano, now driving the #20 Home Depot Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series, was 1 month, 5 days of turning 17 when he scored his first win in the NASCAR Camping World Series West, and he set the NASCAR Camping World Series East mark 11 days later with his win at Greenville Pickens Speedway. In the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Series East opener, Moffitt broke Logano’s record as the series’ youngest Coors Light Pole Award winner. With Saturday’s win, Moffitt also secured a starting spot in the postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.(NASCAR)(6-1-2009)

RICK HENDRICK, OWNER, HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS met with members of the meeting at the conclusion of the race at Dover to discuss the day’s results for the no. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Impala SS and other topics. Full transcript:
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE RESULTS TODAY FOR DALE EARNHARDT, JR. AND LANCE MCGREW IN THEIR FIRST RACE TOGETHER? “I thought it was a really good effort. I thought the communication was really good. The car, we got to the front. We were one adjustment off that we had to take out of the car. But overall, I’d give it a really good grade. I think had we not had that adjustment we have a top six or a top five car. For the guys to work that well together that quick, I was really pleased. I listened to them all day and the communication was extremely good. The feedback was really good. The decisions they made – a lot of those guys, Brian Whitesell, Tom (Stewart) our engineer, all those guys had been here. Rex, came up and went back Saturday night. I think Junior and Lance did a great job. I’m really pleased. I think that we have something to build on there going to Pocono.”
DALE JR’S FOCUS SEEMED BETTER TODAY AFTER SUCH A TOUGH FEW WEEKS, WOULD YOU AGREE? “It’s a real tough decision when you have to really talented guys. Tony is a very good crew chief and Dale is an extremely good driver. But they’ve never worked with anybody else. All they know is what they’ve done for their racing careers and sometimes you need a fresh start. Tony needs another challenge the pressure has been unbelievable for those two guys. It was to the point that I don’t know how they took it. I could feel it. I could see it in their faces. I think that both guys will benefit from this because Tony’s being at a road course test with Jimmie Johnson is going to open his horizons to working with a totally different guy that gives feedback a different way.
“I told both guys, my brother and I could look at each other and fight but if somebody else messed with one of us, we were family, we would get after it. I think a lot of those situations were there because they were related. They had just gotten to a point I think that they need a new challenge. We need to kind of hopefully get the pressure off of them. Although Dale, I really appreciate the way he stepped up and I have talked to Tony every day since then and he is excited about doing something a little different.
“I am very pleased today because it could have, you just never know until you put people together. But Lance and Dale have worked together in the Nationwide car and I have listened to that. Lance does a good job, I call it a field general, calling a race. Got Brian Whitesell standing there. Tom (Stewart) and Lance worked together way way back in the Busch years. I even considered one time Tony going up top and Lance calling the race just to give them a fresh look. But I would say, if I have to go back as hard as Dover is to get a handle on a car and how any little adjustment can take you out of the game, the feedback and the way they ran the race, I was extremely happy with.”

Memphis truck race lands sponsor: After lacking a title sponsor for much of the year, June’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park has a new identity: the MemphisTravel.com 200 presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts. The Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau takes over the title sponsorship of the race, which is an extension of a longtime partnership between the track and the bureau. CVB president Kevin Kane said NASCAR racing in Memphis is a great vehicle to promote the city as a tourist destination. O’Reilly had been the title sponsor of the Memphis Truck race since 2002, but reduced its race sponsorships across the board after signing on as the official auto parts store of NASCAR.(Memphis Commercial Appeal)(5-31-2009)
