Tony Eury Jr. Out, Lance McGrew In
Hendrick Motorsports today named Lance McGrew as interim crew chief of the No. 88 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team of driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. beginning with the June 7 event at Pocono Raceway. Team manager Brian Whitesell will lead the team this weekend at Dover, Del. “Our performance hasn’t been where it should be,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “It’s impossible to pin that on any one factor, but a change is the right decision at this point. We have a plan in place, and we’re going to move forward with it.” Whitesell and Rex Stump, Hendrick Motorsports’ lead chassis engineer, have been assigned to support McGrew on a full-time basis. Whitesell, who won two of seven races as Jeff Gordon’s interim crew chief in 1999, will join McGrew and team engineer Tom Stewart on the No. 88 pit box to assist with race strategy. “We’re going to put our full resources toward improving the situation and winning races,” Hendrick said. “It’s going to be a collective effort that includes all of our drivers, all of our crew chiefs and all of our engineers. Everyone in our company will be involved on some level.”

Dover Goodyear Tire Notes
Teams in all three NASCAR series will run the same tire codes at Dover this week, though the tires for the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will be branded “Goodyear Eagle,” while the tires for the Camping World Truck Series will be branded “Goodyear Wrangler” — this is the same tire combination that Sprint Cup and Nationwide teams ran at Dover last fall — additionally, this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Cup and Truck teams will run at Michigan in two weeks — unlike on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length — on which teams do not run inner liners — teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Dover — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Chase Notes/Stats: 2008 Chase participants Clint Bowyer (36th), Dale Jr. (40th) and Kevin Harvick (41st) all lost important ground at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in the Coca Cola 600 as the halfway mark in The Race to The Chase is reached. Harvick, now 279 points out of the Top 12, is in the toughest spot, and is going through one of the toughest streaks he’s had in recent memory. Bowyer is still within one race out of the Top 12 at 109 points out, but this team has lost a dizzying 13 spots in the last five races. Carl Edwards’ tumble in the standings stopped at LMS with a fourth in rain-shortened race. Still, Cousin Carl is only 9 points ahead of 13th place and needs to generate some momentum. We are officially at the halfway point of The Race to The Chase after Dover: 13 down, 13 to go. Special halfway analysis next week. For more see my Chase Stats page.(5-29-2009)

Twelve Different Spring Winners and Counting at Dover: Dover International Speedway’s spring race is a fan favorite for a variety of reasons but one in particular stands out: There’s a very good chance someone’s favorite driver may be headed for Victory Lane. The past 12 editions of the Autism Speaks 400 presented by Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips and Cheese have produced 12 different winners. There hasn’t been a repeat winner in the 21st Century. Jeff Gordon is the only double winner since 1996. Gordon’s most recent Dover spring victory came in 2001. In other words, just about everyone is in the mix when the green flag drops at The Monster Mile. #18-Kyle Busch is the defending spring winner at Dover. Sprint Cup Series champions are well represented among the dozen repeat winners: Gordon; #48-Johnson; #14-Stewart; #17-Kenseth; #96-Labonte; and Dale Jarrett. Manufacturer winners? Doesn’t matter. All four count victories during the 12-race run with General Motors and Ford tied with five wins apiece.(NASCAR PR)(5-29-2009)

Dale Earnhardt Jr. talks about crew chief change: When Rick Hendrick announced he was replacing his cousin Tony Eury, Jr. as crew chief of the #88-National Guard/AMP Energy Drink Chevy, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was up in Michigan helping to promote the June 14th Sprint Cup Series race at MIS. Measuring his words carefully, Junior was clearly saddened by the split, but also said he understood why the move was made. “It was a very difficult situation. Obviously, when me and Tony Jr. went to work with Rick we expected to have a lot of success and be in a totally different situation than we are now. It’s really disappointing, I guess, that we aren’t making that happen. It’s a situation, it’s a relationship that’s very important to me, the one with Tony Jr. We are family and it was a pretty big risk, I guess, for me and him both to make the move. We really wanted it to work. Unfortunately, we didn’t succeed. Being this is a business, Rick and the guys decided we needed to go in a new direction. I’m supportive and confident in the decisions that they make. They have a lot of great success. Obviously, there is no arguing they know how to run a race team. I want to be in a good position where I run as well as I can. We have a lot of sponsors and a lot of responsibilities to put ourselves in that situation if we want to be able to race every weekend. I’m pretty confident. I still have a good resolve and a good initiative and motivation to get up and get to the race track every weekend and try to see when we’ll turn this thing around. Rick and the guys are positive about the decision that we’ve made to make the change in crew chief. They seem confident about the decision. That kind of makes me feel pretty good about it. It makes the team feel good. At least their aware of situation and they’re willing to make changes and do whatever it takes.” Junior also went out of his way to say that Hendrick had shown lenty of patience…..See more on my #88 Team News and Links page or listen to full interview at PRN’s Garage Pass Radio Show.(5-28-2009) www.jayski.com/teams/88.htm www.goprn.com/shows/garage_pass/

What can a $10 investment do for you?

Not only will it give you the opportunity to help provide bullet-and-knife-resistant vests for K9 officers throughout the United States, but also the chance to win a potential cash prize valued at twenty-five percent (25%) of the total monies raised!

With the help of your $10 donation today, www.vest4k9.com, in collaboration with NASCAR drivers Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle, will raise funds to vest 192 K9 officers working in 32 states. And 25 percent of all cash raised will be raffled off to one lucky donor. So, the more money donated, the more you could win!

In July of 2008, the Tony Stewart Foundation vested all 30 Indiana State Police dogs, plus 10 additional dogs in 3 other states. Stewart’s philanthropic efforts called much attention toward Vest ‘N P.D.P.’s president and founder Susie Jean’s one-person shop and suggested a need for a national effort to raise funds to help these K9 officers. So far, 350 dogs in 38 states have been provided a custom-fit vest to protect them in the line of duty.

These custom-made bullet-and-knife-resistant vests are made from the same Kevlar material used in human officer’s vests and are personally embroidered for each K9 officer. Vests range from $1,200 to $1,500 per vest, which, according to Susie Jean, is “A small price to pay for our police dogs that protect their human partner as well as our communities.” Click on, “Buy Tickets” to Invest ‘n Vests! Each $10 donation enters you to win the cash prize. Don’t delay! Raffle ends June 14th!

To learn more about Vest ‘N P.D.P. visit Susie Jean’s Web site at www.vestnpdp.com.

To catch up with the philanthropic work of Tony & Greg, visit www.tonystewartfoundation.org and www.gregbifflefoundation.com. Don’t miss the Invest ‘n Vests information page through the Tony Stewart Foundation’s Programs page, including individual K9 and officer profiles, photo gallery and more!

Of the cars vying for 43 spots this weekend at Dover, those in positions 31 -35, respectively — and looking to make the field on speed — are new daddy (as of last Saturday with daughter Piper Shay) Ken Butler III (No. 23 Aaron’s Chevrolet), Scott Wimmer, Morgan Shepherd, and Casey Atwood. Safe this week but on the top 30 automatic qualifying owner points bubble are Brian Keselowski (No. 26 Schweitzer Title Dodge; 29th in points) and Brandon Whitt (No. 61 Charlie Shoffner-owned Ford; 30th in points).(NASCAR) (05-29-09)

In 13 previous NASCAR Nationwide starts at Dover International Speedway, Kevin Harvick holds a record of three poles, two top-five and seven top-10 finishes and has led 290 laps. As he makes his 14th series start there, the two-time series champion will aim to get his first win at the track and the second in his No. 33.KHI newcomer J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 4 KHI Chevrolet) will be looking to repeat what his boss accomplished in 2000 — win a pole, lead several laps and earn a top-10 finish in his first start at Dover. That will be a daunting task. Fitzpatrick, who has competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this season, has only experienced Dover on racing simulators.(NASCAR) (05-29-09)
