#36 BDR team shutting down? BUT…. was told about a report on a local racing radio show, Gary Danko’s Speedway Line Report, a 90 minute show [WATR 1320AM out of Waterbury CT] where Jeff “The Jet” Zarella of the #15 DEI team said that he is hearing that the #36 360 OTC Toyota team of Bill David Racing, that Jeremy Mayfield drives for, could shut down soon, and said he had heard that if the #36 didn’t make last weeks race at Atlanta, the team would not run at Bristol. However, the team and Mayfield are listed on the Bristol Nextel Cup race entry list and have checked with a few sources and been told the team and Mayfield will attempt Bristol.(source: Gary Danko’s Speedway Line Report)
AND in the Bristol pre-race report from Billdavisracing.com…quotes Jeremy Mayfield on Bristol Motor SpeedwayMaybe this whole Car of Tomorrow thing is exactly what this team needs right now. Something new, something different. We feel like were working so hard day in and day out, and we havent got anything to show for it. Its tough. Its tough to stay positive and not drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what youre doing wrong. But I dont think theres anything major that is wrong right now. Its just been a bunch of little stuff, and sometimes we beat ourselves and sometimes we just plain get beat. Theres no room for error in Nextel Cup racing anymore. Each and every team that shows up has a legitimate shot at making the race. The days of field fillers are over, and we need to step up our program to get where we need to be so that were one of the teams that makes the field every Friday. Its just that simple; we wont give up until we get there. We show up every weekend thinking well race on Sunday, and thats not going to change. This is a good bunch of guys, and well get there because no one is going to let anyone give up.(3-21-2007)

Cup crew chief illustrates modifications to Car of Tomorrow; multimedia report with video
While the bodies and templates are altered from year to year — and sometimes from race to race — chassis beneath the sheet metal of NASCAR’s premiere division have gone virtually unchanged for nearly three decades.
“The car we run now was last updated in 1980,” said Gary Nelson, former NASCAR vice-president of research and development, who helped spearhead the Car of Tomorrow project. “The body styles have changed, but the basic chassis was 21 years old at the time [the COT project began]. There have been several technological advances over the years. So we decided to start from a new foundation and went from there.”
Though some drivers and crews have taken issue with the COT’s cost, handling and looks, there is one feature of the program that all are in support of — keeping the sport’s stars safe.

Jeff Gordon completed 500 miles in one of the new Chevrolet R07 engine last week in a tire test at Darlington Raceway. Chevrolet officials had hoped that teams would see RCR use the engine for a full race weekend and put it in their main cars in the next few weeks. That probably won’t happen. Scott Wimmer likely will attempt the April 15 race at Texas with the new engine for another race simulation try.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will pull the Bristol double with entries in both Cup and Busch Series races. Besides driving his No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet in Sunday’s Food City 500 at BMS, he will be making his 2nd 2007 Busch Series start in the No. 8 Menards Chevrolet in Saturday’s Sharpie Mini 300.
– USA Today
Juan Pablo Montoya flipped off the flat screen in his motor home late Saturday after three laps of the Australian Grand Prix. Was it too painful to watch ex-Formula One teammate Kimi Raikkonen win on the international circuit where Montoya drove from 2001 to 2006? No, Montoya said, too predictable. In another sign he is blending in quickly with the stock-car set, Montoya also has seen enough of F1.
– USA Today
After finishing fifth in his fifth NASCAR start, the first person to congratulate Juan Pablo Montoya outside his No. 42 Dodge was veteran Jeff Burton, who offered a hearty handshake and words of encouragement — the first of many from peers impressed by the Colombian’s rapid transition from open-wheel racing.

Klaussner ups Waltrip sponsorship for new brand
The Business Journal of the Greater Triad Area
Race fans won’t have to look quite so hard to see a logo for Klaussner Furniture Industries on Michael Waltrip’s car at future NASCAR events.
The Asheboro-based manufacturer upped its Waltrip sponsorship from a smaller window placement to the rear deck lid on Waltrip’s No. 55 Toyota as a boost for the company’s new Klaussner Home Furnishings consumer brand, according to Jeff Davis, Klaussner’s senior vice president of marketing.
“Michael and the No. 55 car offer a great opportunity to showcase the new Klaussner brand initiatives to the NASCAR fan base,” Davis said.
Klaussner, the fourth-largest furniture manufacturer in the country, has traditionally relied on its retail distribution partners for its consumer marketing, but is planning to take a more active role itself through the Klaussner Home Furnishings brand, Davis said. The company expects additional consumer-oriented marketing initiatives to take place throughout the year

ROBBIE REISER SET TO RETURN AT BRISTOL
Long-time crew chief of the No. 17 anxious to get back to business
CONCORD, N.C. – After serving a four-race suspension, Robbie Reiser, the long-time crew chief of Matt Kenseth and the No. 17 DEWALT Ford team, returns to the track this weekend for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. By missing the Daytona 500 in February, it was the first race Reiser missed atop the pit box as Kenseth’s crew chief since 1999, a steak of 255 races.
Reiser will return in time for NASCAR’s much-anticipated debut of the Car of Tomorrow. With the introduction of the C.O.T., the No. 17 team was forced to retire chassis number 89, which had run every race at Bristol since the beginning of 2001, collecting two wins, seven top fives, nine top 10s, one pole and led a whopping 742 laps during that span.

GM Racing Developed NASCAR Impala SS in Virtual Wind Tunnel
The winds of change are blowing at gale force in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. And one of the most powerful implements in GM Racing’s toolbox is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) – a mathematical simulation of the airflow around a vehicle. This emerging technology is influencing the design of both racing and production automobiles.
CFD played a key role in GM Racing’s analysis and development of a racing version of the Impala SS, the new-generation NASCAR race car that will make its competition debut this weekend in Bristol.
“The best way to describe CFD is a wind tunnel in a computer,” explained Kevin Bayless, GM Racing oval track chassis/aero program manager. “CFD is a simulation that predicts the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle using computational methods rather than physical measurements. CFD allows engineers and racing teams to evaluate the effects of aerodynamic changes quickly on a computer screen rather than in a conventional wind tunnel.”

The Memorex brand will assume primary sponsorship of the #41 Busch Series Dodge later this year during the final 10 races of the 2007 Busch schedule. Clauson will drive seven of those 10 races, sharing the ride with Reed Sorenson.(CGRFS PR)(3-20-2007)
Raybestos Rookie Notes for Bristol: Juan Pablo Montoya was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the Nicorette 300 at Atlanta. Montoya finished eighth, his second top-10 finish in nine career Busch Series races. He took Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the second time this season and was the only first-year driver to finish inside the top-10. For the first time this season, Montoya took the lead in the Raybestos Rookie standings. He holds a five-point edge over Marcos Ambrose (58-53) entering the Sharpie Mini 300 at Bristol. FACT OF THE WEEK: Montoya is the only driver to simultaneously lead the Raybestos Rookie standings in both the Nextel Cup Series and the Busch Series since the rookie program was created in Busch in 1989. Two Raybestos Rookies rank inside the top-10 in the Busch Series championship standings. The most recent race where two or more rookies were in the top-10 was the 2006 Stater Bros. 300 at California (Todd Kluever was fifth followed by Burney Lamar in sixth). Ambrose is seventh in the series championship standings, best of any Raybestos Rookie.(Raybestos PR)(3-20-2007)
