(more) NASCAR/other stuff on eBay
As part of a continuing effort to clear out my house of clutter, and help pay the bills since I’m unemployed, I’ve listed some additional items on eBay.
Audiovox XR9 XM Radio w/ car kit + TWO home kits – this would be a very inexpensive way for someone to get into XM or Sirius satellite radio… you would need absolutely nothing else other than to sign up for the service.
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Nascar by Brian Tarcy (I have two of these)
Daytona 500: 50 Years of “The Great American Race” DVD (only 1 left!)
Prescription for Drug Alternatives by James Balch (Natural alternatives to prescription and OTC drugs)
Many of you have received the Stock Car Gazette for years, absolutely free of charge. If one of these items interests you, I would appreciate your help in return for the free Stock Car Gazettes you’ve gotten. Thank you in advance.

The buzz around the garage last weekend was JR Motorsports is setting the stage to move from the Nationwide to Sprint Cup series to field a team for Brad Keselowski. Statement From Carl Long About NASCAR Penalty
Statement from Carl and DeeDee regarding the recent suspension and fines… First of all I would like to wish Charles Swing, my crew chief, well. Since this incident he was admitted Monday night to a Georgia hospital with heart problems. He is a stay at home dad who loves to go racing. We purchased an engine from a reputable builder at the beginning of the season. We overheated the engine in practice and had to change it. We had the option to withdraw and go home before admitting it to inspection. Trusting that our blown engine wouldn’t have any problems passing NASCAR tech, we submitted it and put our other motor in the car to get ready for the Showdown. As everyone knows it didn’t pass tech. The rules are 358 cubic inches and ours is 358.17 cubic inches. The .17 is as wrong as if it would have been 400 cubic inches. This engine is 50 horsepower less than top teams but it was all that could be afforded. I would have never knowingly went to the race track with a big engine!!! — This suspension has not only stopped me from racing, it has also hurt me with my everyday job. It’s hard to make a living working at the race track when NASCAR will not let you in. I can only hope that the appeal board will see things differently than the ones that came up with this penalty. I don’t consider myself a cheater. I am addicted to the worse drug ever…RACING!!! Every dime we have been able to scrape up, we use to race, because we love the sport. It takes about a half million in equipment to be able to build an engine, so I have to rely on other people and this time it bit me. Thanks for supporting me in wherever this goes!!! — Carl & DeeDee

NASCAR calls mandatory driver meeting: NASCAR has called a mandatory meeting for all Sprint Cup drivers for Tuesday [May 26th] morning at the Research and Development Center in Concord. Officials would not reveal the nature of the meeting. Speculation in the garage was that it is to clear up the confusion created by Jeremy Mayfield’s indefinite suspension for violating the substance-abuse policy.(ESPN)(5-21-2009)
Mayfield meets with NASCAR; legal action possible: The attorney for Jeremy Mayfield hinted Thursday he’ll take legal action to have Mayfield’s NASCAR suspension lifted. Mayfield and attorney Bill Diehl met for more than an hour with NASCAR officials. Although Diehl said the meeting was cordial, it did not get them any closer to resolving the issue. Mayfield was suspended May 9 for failing a random drug test. “Jeremy doesn’t believe that he’s done anything that supports his suspension for the use of drugs,” Diehl said. NASCAR has not revealed what banned substance Mayfield used, and Diehl also refused to identify the substance. Diehl did not say what his next move will be, but strongly hinted at taking legal action Friday that will challenge the suspension and the validity of the drug test. He said he received copies of two toxicology reports this week from NASCAR. “We’re contesting everything that happened,” Diehl said. “We hope that it’s a mistake.” Joining Mayfield and Diehl at the meeting were four other Diehl associates. Representing NASCAR was general counsel Gary Crotty, assistant general counsel Karen Leetzow, Dr. David Black, administrator of NASCAR’s drug testing program, and Steve O’Donnell, vice president of racing operations. “I would agree it was cordial. We laid out the process,” NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said. “They want to get Jeremy back in the car, and there is a very well-defined program to do that. Jeremy needs to meet with Dr. Black and work that out, and if he is successful in that, he can get back in the car.” Mayfield was dropped off and picked up by his wife in a white Cadillac Escalade. When she returned to get him, a cameraman emerged from the back seat to film the scene. Mayfield, wearing black slacks and a long sleeve dress shirt, smiled and exchanged pleasantries, but Diehl would not allow him to comment.(Associated Press)(5-21-2009)
Double File Restarts coming? NASCAR officials are looking at whether the double-wide restarts used in the All-Star race with all the leaders up front should be used for regular Sprint Cup races. “We’ve been talking about it for a year,” series director John Darby said on Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “Every time we have an All-Star race the frequency of those talks gets much louder. It’s obviously something the fans like a lot. Their interest is our interest. We’re looking at it.” While most procedural changes are made during the offseason, Darby didn’t rule out that a change could be made during the season if the governing body thought it made for better racing. “We use it in modified and Camping World East/West events,” he said. “The only thing it hasn’t applied to is the national series. What we have to look at is the downside. We try to apply every scenario that could create more problems. That’s what we’re working through.” Races currently are started double-filed until 20 laps remain with lapped cars on the inside lane. That means a 15th-place car actually could be starting in the 30th position. All restarts 20 laps in are single file.(ESPN)(5-21-2009)
American Red Cross Joins 3M and Greg Biffle: For the second year in a row, the American Red Cross is encouraging loyal NASCAR fans to donate blood through the Red Cross by joining Red Cross Racing. Red Cross Racing is a program designed to increase the number of blood donors and the number of times they donate. Participants of this program can get points for a variety of activities including giving blood and/or platelets, and recruiting other blood donors. #16-Greg Biffle has signed on again as a Red Cross spokesperson this racing season to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood donations. Biffle, a Red Cross blood donor and member of its National Celebrity Cabinet, will help get the word out to the NASCAR fans across the country about the importance of blood donation. Thanks to a generous donation from 3M, Biffle will wear the Red Cross fire suit and drive the #16 Ford Fusion with the full Red Cross paint scheme at the Sprint Cup Series races in Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend and in Atlanta on Labor Day weekend. This year, the program offers participants new and exciting rewards for blood donation activities. Registrants have the chance to get points and exchange them for NASCAR-themed prizes, such as limited edition die-cast cars. Fans can join the program by visiting redcrossracing.com, and can begin accruing points after registering.(PR Newswire)(5-21-2009)
NASCAR Kids Dolls: NASCAR and Original Appalachian Artworks have joined forces with leading toymaker JAKKS Pacific to produce NASCAR ‘Kids, a crop of distinctly designed Cabbage Patch Kids in likenesses celebrating NASCAR’s top drivers. The first NASCAR ‘Kid to speed to the checkered flag will be Dale Earnhardt Jr. NASCAR’s most popular driver is scheduled to debut his ‘Kid counterpart on QVC Friday, May 22 during QVC’s For Race Fans Only broadcast at 8:00pm/et. The next NASCAR ‘Kid to hit the road will be Jeff Gordon, who is scheduled to make his appearance in Fall 2009. NASCAR ‘Kids, will have the signature birthmark of Xavier Roberts and an authentic birth certificate showing the driver’s actual birth date. The Adoption Fee (SRP) is $45.12.(CNN Money)(5-21-2009)
Race for Television Exposure Goes Gordon’s Way: With seven top-10 finishes and a win to his credit through the first 10 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Jeff Gordon is easily winning the battle for television exposure on behalf of his corporate sponsors. Gordon’s brands have appeared for 12.5 hours during TV coverage devoted to the races, nearly 1.5 hours more than sponsors received from the second-most exposure prolific driver, Jimmy Johnson. According to research conducted by Joyce Julius & Associates, Inc. — which specializes in measuring the scope of sponsorships across all forms of media — 70 brands appearing on locations such as Gordon’s car, uniform and support crew’s uniforms have appeared clear and in-focus for a total of 12 hours, 27 minutes, 10 seconds (12:27:10) during television coverage of NASCAR’s first 10 official points races. Additionally, those sponsors have been mentioned by Gordon or the announcers 103 times. In comparison, 54 brands have been monitored with Johnson thus far in 2009, amassing a cumulative on-screen time of 10:42:03, while also being mentioned verbally on 100 occasions.
Other exposure findings from the first 10 race telecasts:
Most exposure for Series sponsor Sprint from a driver: 00:15:08 (Gordon)
Most verbal mentions for a primary team sponsor: 35 (Home Depot-J. Logano)
Most exposure for tire provider Goodyear from a driver: 00:12:24 (Johnson)
Most exposure for an auto manufacturer from a driver: 01:17:37 (Chevrolet-Gordon)
Most exposure from identity on a hood: 02:01:43 (Lowe’s-Johnson)
Top Exposure Producing Drivers (After 10 Races):
Driver, Points Standing, Total Brands, Exposure Time, Verbal Mentions

TONY STEWART ENJOYS YOU AS A TEAMMATE FOR MANY REASONS LIKE YOUR ENGINEERING DEGREE AND YOUR OUTDOORSMAN SIDE. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT HIM, BOTH ON AND OFF THE TRACK?
“Just the things we have in common. I know out there that like to fish and like to hunt and do things with old cars. That’s out there. But for me, if I was looking for the ideal teammate, it would be Tony Stewart because of the things that we like, whether it’s rehabbing our baby deer, enjoying old cars, enjoying the open wheel side of things that we came from. He owns cars and I talk to him about his owning cars. So we have a lot of things in common. I don’t have any ownership, but I still have a very big love of those race cars. He’s much more business savvy than I ever thought he was. I know he’s got a lot of great people around him, but at the same time, he’s much more involved than I ever thought or considered him to be. I always thought of him as a race car driver. That’s all I ever knew him as. So it’s nice to see that he’s got great ethics and he’s got a lot of respect for the people around him and the opportunity that he gives his employees. He’s a very giving man.”
_____
RYAN NEWMAN, U.S. ARMY IMPALA SS – Pole Winner:
“It was a lot of fun tonight to drive the U.S. Army Chevrolet for Stewart-Haas Racing. Thanks to Tony and Gene for the opportunity. Just a good lap. I really wasn’t totally satisfied with the lap. But obviously you don’t have to be when you have a fast race car. The guys did a good job. Just happy to be in the position and look forward to the rest of the weekend.
“If we could sweep the weekend, that would be really awesome. We’ll just keep our chin up and keep doing what we are doing. It is a situation where you can’t be satisfied with your performance, you have to keep working on it. And we’ll do that.
“We had a good car in the All-Star race so we have a new car because we crashed that one. It is a very competitive race car, we proved that tonight.”
__________
MARK MARTIN, NO. 5 CARQUEST/KELLOGG’S IMPALA SS
DO YOU EAT ANYTHING OR DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT TO KEEP YOUR ENERGY HIGH? “Yeah, I live every day like tomorrow is the biggest race of my life 365 days a year. If I could eat anything to help that race then I would be doing that every day. So really I don’t believe you can eat a bowl of pasta and be any better prepared for a race then if you didn’t. Fitness is a lifestyle. You have to live it. You can’t drink a gallon of water, eat a bowl of pasta and go to bed early the night before the race and be prepared tomorrow. You have to get rest every night.”
DO YOU EVER EAT ANYTHING DURING THE RACES? “Red flags. Yeah, I can barely make it to the end of the races. I’m a two and one half hour guy. I eat every two hours. So the first thing I do after the race is eat. At Darlington and Phoenix I ate from Victory Lane to the press room because I had to eat.”
DO YOU HAVE SNACKS WITH YOU? “Red flags yes. The adrenaline carries me. I don’t feel any energy crash. I just am hungry when I get out of the race car and realize when the adrenaline wears off that I’m very hungry. I don’t have any problem with energy in the race car. All the rest of the time I do but in the race car is no problem.”
__________
TONY STEWART, NO. 14 OFFICE DEPOT/OLD SPICE IMPALA SS
IS THERE SOMETHING SPECIAL YOU EAT ON RACE DAY? “If you have looked at me recently I am sure you have realized I am going to be on the cover of GQ any day now. (LAUGHS). No, I don’t in all honesty. I am one of those guys, whatever I am in the mood for, I might go to the concession stand and get lunch before a race. I’m probably not the biggest health food nut in the group.”

J.R. Fitzpatrick Joins Kevin Harvick Inc. for Remainder of 2009 Season
Canadian Driver to Compete in Select Truck and Nationwide Series Races
KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (May 21, 2009) – Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) announced today that J.R. Fitzpatrick will compete for the team in selected events in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series throughout the remainder of the 2009 season.
The Cambridge, Ontario, Canada native will pilot a KHI entry in eight NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events, beginning with the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway on May 29.
“This is a great opportunity for me and I firmly believe that I am joining the best team in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series,” said Fitzpatrick. “I was fortunate enough to meet Kevin Harvick last year at Phoenix and he really helped me out a lot. Since then, I have gone to him on and off the track for advice and he has been great to learn from. Ron (Hornaday) has also helped me before and now that I will be a teammate of his, it gives me more confidence going to tracks that will be new to me. I believe racing is all about confidence and I have that knowing that I am going to be in great equipment driving for Kevin Harvick Inc.”
“We’re glad to have J.R. Fitzpatrick join KHI for the remainder of the 2009 season,” said KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick. “J.R. and I both got our starts in go-karts and he has taken a path similar to mine, moving up through the stock car ranks, during his career. I feel like our equipment speaks for itself and it will be exciting to watch him attempt to take that next step in his racing career.”
In addition, Fitzpatrick will compete in two NASCAR Nationwide Series events in a KHI entry, the first being at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International Raceway August 8 and the second at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada August 30.

SS Green Light Racing looking to run full season: SS Green Light Racing has one of the longest tenures in the Camping World Truck Series having started over two hundred consecutive races over the last eight years. The 2009 plan has been to run Chad McCumbee in 12-15 races and then try to capitalize on the strong finishes to gain additional sponsorship to try and run the full season. Co-owners Ken Smith and Bobby Dotter are currently recruiting funded drivers wishing to compete in top-tier equipment for selected races during the second half of the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season beginning with the Camping World RV Sales 200 at the Milwaukee Mile on June 19th. Chad McCumbee is currently sitting eighth in NCWTS point standings as well driving the SS Green Light #07 entry. He is very impressed with the quality of the equipment and the talent the team has assembled. “I have had some of the best trucks this year I’ve ever driven. Bobby and the SS Green Light team have done a great job and the results really show on the track.” McCumbee said. “I have so much respect for Bobby that I’m willing to do whatever he and Ken feel needs to be done to help this team grow. If I have to take a back seat to help better the #07 team, I’ll do it. Right now the economy is hurting so much and being a team player is what we need to keep this team together and keep the #07 in the owners points. If we can find the proper funding to run additional races, hopefully I’ll be in position to benefit.(SS Green Light Racing PR)(5-22-2009)
