#46 Crew Chief Penalized Big-Time
NASCAR has issued penalties, suspensions and fines to the No. 146 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of rules infractions committed during last weekend’s event at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4-I (any determination by NASCAR Officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-5.4A (engine exceeded the maximum engine size of 358.000 cubic inch displacement) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book. As a result, crew chief Charles Swing has been fined $200,000, suspended from the next 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship events, suspended from NASCAR until Aug. 18 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31. Driver Carl Long and owner Danielle Long have been penalized with the loss of 200 driver and 200 owner points, respectively, suspended from the next 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship events, suspended from NASCAR until Aug. 18 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31.

Hendrick Donates 10 Cars
In a show dedicated to heroes, Hal Colston was one who really caught Oprah Winfrey’s attention. Colston operates the Good News Garage, which has locations all over New England. Workers there fix cars for people down on their luck, many of them single mothers. “In so many cases, people are just a repair bill away from disaster,” Colston said. Oprah acknowledged there’s a waitlist for cars, and that’s when Colston’s surprise came. “When Rick Hendrick, an automotive dealer from North Carolina heard . . . ,” Oprah began. Out came Hendrick, one of Charlotte’s best-known businessmen who owns NASCAR teams and car dealerships. “So today we want to donate 10 2008 Chevy Impalas,” Hendrick told the Oprah audience. Back in Charlotte, Eyewitness News asked Hendrick why he wanted to do this. “We could inspire a lot of people to help, to step up, because these were folks that — they had a job, and if they didn’t have transportation to get to work, they were going to lose their jobs,” he said. Hendrick said it was Oprah’s producers who contacted him for the show after several car manufacturers turned down their request for car donations. He said it took only about a half-hour to decide to do it. “We thought, it’ll come back. And it was the right thing to do,” he said. Hendrick also donated $1,000 worth of gas for each of those vehicles. It’ll be up to Colston to determine who will get the cars.

Gordon Gets Most Exposure
With seven top-10 finishes and a win to his credit through the first 10 races of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Jeff Gordon is easily winning the battle for television exposure on behalf of his corporate sponsors. Gordon’s brands have appeared for 12.5 hours during TV coverage devoted to the races, nearly 1.5 hours more than sponsors received from the second-most exposure prolific driver, Jimmie Johnson. According to research conducted by Joyce Julius & Associates, Inc. — which specializes in measuring the scope of sponsorships across all forms of media — 70 brands appearing on locations such as Gordon’s car, uniform and support crew’s uniforms have appeared clear and in-focus for a total of 12 hours, 27 minutes, 10 seconds (12:27:10) during television coverage of NASCAR’s first 10 official points races. Additionally, those sponsors have been mentioned by Gordon or the announcers 103 times. In comparison, 54 brands have been monitored with Johnson thus far in 2009, amassing a cumulative on-screen time of 10:42:03, while also being mentioned verbally on 100 occasions.

Chase Notes: #5-Mark Martin’s second win in the last four races lifted him from 15th all the way to 11th in the standings. Lots of races left, but the #5 team under Alan Gustafson looks strong. Another podium finish for #14-Tony Stewart (3rd at Darlington) gets him to second in the standings. Another strong run by #39-Ryan Newman (4th) makes it a happy place at Stewart-Haas these days. #33-Clint Bowyer’s 37th at Darlington tumbled him out of the Top 12. Over the last five, Bowyer has gone from 2nd to 13th, and has managed only 394 points during that period (Stewart has scored 774). See more on my Chase Stats after Darlington page.(5-18-2009)

Stewart looking to be the first owner-driver winner since Rudd: #14-Tony Stewart’s win in the All-Star Race doesn’t go down as an official win for Stewart-Haas Racing, so the team will still be looking for its first points win Sunday night. Stewart will also look to do something that hasn’t been done in this millennium: win as an owner-driver. No owner-driver has won a points race since Ricky Rudd in the Tide Ride back in 1998. The last to do it before him was Geoffrey Bodine in 1996, when the upstate New York driver fittingly won at Watkins Glen. Bodine was also the only other owner-driver to win the All-Star race.
Most wins as owner-driver since 1990
Driver — Wins — Last Win
Ricky Rudd — 6 — 1998
Darrell Waltrip — 5 — 1992
Geoffrey Bodine — 4 — 1996
Alan Kulwicki — 4 — 1992

Keselowski and JR Motorsports to move up? The buzz around the garage last weekend was JR Motorsports is setting the stage to move from the Nationwide to Sprint Cup series to field a team for Brad Keselowski. Keselowski said he is negotiating exclusively with Hendrick Motorsports for a fulltime Cup ride in 2010. HMS does not have an opening, but Rick Hendrick does have ownership in JR Motorsports with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Although Hendrick would have to sell his interest in the company to make this happen, that would be a formality. Also, Earnhardt has said it’s just as economical, maybe more, to run a Cup program than Nationwide under today’s economic climate. Sponsors, such as GoDaddy.com that is on Keselowski’s #88 Nationwide car, gain more exposure in Cup. Should JR Motorsports not move to Cup the only other way to remain associated with HMS would be to put Keselowski in a third car at Stewart-Haas Racing. Of course, that would squelch the rumor that Martin Truex Jr. will leave Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to join that team.(ESPN Insider)(5-21-2009)

Mayfield’s lawyer talks to Sirius Speedway: Wednesday on “Sirius Speedway” on Sirius NASCAR Radio, host Dave Moody spoke with Bill Diehl, the attorney for suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield.
Host, Dave Moody: “Has there been at this point and will there be a lawsuit filed in this matter?”
Bill Diehl: “First question, no lawsuit has been filed. Will there be a lawsuit? That will depend on what happens between Jeremy and NASCAR which ought to be known in the next couple of days.”
Moody: “What kind of conversations are being had between Jeremy and yourself and NASCAR and their representatives right now to try and settle this?”
Diehl: “The conversations I’m having with Jeremy I’m not going to tell you about. The conversations I’m having with the NASCAR lawyer with whom I’ve been dealing I’m not going to talk about. But they’re obviously focused on whether or not Jeremy was suspended properly. Is what happened to him legitimate and should he stay suspended? Should he have to go through some type of rehabilitation, if you will, that they’ve asked for? So those issues are what we’re talking about. Should that happen? Or, the alternative is, has he been mistreated and have they improperly deprived him of a way to make a living? There are some side issues. They’ve said a lot of unpleasant things about him that Jeremy doesn’t believe are true. There’s a separate remedy for that kind of behavior.”
Moody: “Specifically what has been said about him?”
Diehl: “I haven’t heard it directly so what I’m telling you is what’s been published. I read a report where Mr. France gratuitously announced that the serious recreational drug use by Mr. Mayfield was very difficult, very bad and they weren’t going to tolerate it. Accusing somebody that’s driving a race car a couple hundred miles an hour of serious recreational drug use, that’s probably not too good thing to say about him. Especially if it’s not true.”
Moody: “Can you tell us what specific substance has NASCAR accused Jeremy of having in his system?”
Diehl: “I could tell you. I’m not. But we do have two reports that they furnished me yesterday and then they just sent me one a couple hours ago that they hadn’t furnished. So we’ve got two reports but I’m not going to talk about them yet. If we get in a situation where we’ve got to talk about them then we’ll talk about them. But I’m not going to talk about them today.”
Moody: “Do the two reports come to the same conclusion? Do they name the same chemical substance?”
Diehl: “I’m not going to talk about what the reports say except to tell you I have them. And then you’ve already been told or I’ve read lots of stuff that indicate what the NASCAR reps have said and what this guy, [drug test administrator Dr. David] Black, has said. The game about what is in the report is probably just that at this point. It’s a game but I’m not going to participate in that game currently beyond saying that they finally furnished us two reports which they probably should have given to Mr. Mayfield long before this week.”
Moody: “Jeremy has said from the start of this that this all boils down to a prescription medication that’s been prescribed by a doctor for his allergies combined with a couple of Claritin D tablets that he took on the day in question in Richmond. Can you tell me what the prescription medicine that he is taking was?”
Diehl: “No, I won’t reveal that yet but again that’s something that he’s told NASCAR. They know what it was and they’ve gotten the information from the doctor. They’re dealing with everything Jeremy could have furnished them about anything that he’d taken, according to Jeremy. He did take a prescription drug and he does have a medical doctor who prescribed it and they have that data and they had the information about the Claritin D.”
Moody: “What would it take at this point to avoid taking this to the court system? What would have to happen here in the next few days to avoid a lawsuit?”
Diehl: “Some type of acknowledgement that what happened was a mistake on the part of somebody in connection with what they did and how they did it. We’re exploring that with them. We can’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again. They’ve said it. They’ve suspended him. We know there are a couple of reports because we now see them. Somebody is going to have to come forward and acknowledge that, well, we thought we did what we were supposed to do, maybe we made a mistake, let’s try it again.”
Moody: “What’s Jeremy’s frame of mind and attitude right now?”
Diehl: “I think he’s very upset and he’s insulted. He’s had a 17 year career, had some successes. He’s just getting started with his own team, and this sort of takes you out at the knees if you’re suddenly accused of being a recreational drug user and you’re suspended from doing what you get paid to do. So, he’s upset. He’s trying to keep a handle on it, I think. Hopefully he’s listening to what I tell him to do. He wants everybody to know that he’s not guilty of what he’s accused of.”
Show personality, Suzie Armstrong: “How soon did he contact you after he was notified by NASCAR about this?”
Diehl: “I don’t remember the date. When I knew about it I think I was watching the race from Darlington on television and it came on that he’d been suspended. And that occurred, if my memory was right – I’m not looking at a calendar – May the 9th, a Saturday. And then he called me the next week when I got back in town.”
Moody: “Is there any unofficial timeline at this point for you to decide whether or not this takes the next step into the legal system?”
Diehl: “Yes, there is but I’m not going to tell you what it is.”

Mayfield hires lawyer, has toxicology report: NASCAR driver/owner #41-Jeremy Mayfield, suspended indefinitely from the sport for violating its substance-abuse policy, has retained legal counsel in the effort to clear his name. Bill Diehl, the same attorney who represented Elliott Sadler last winter in a dispute with Richard Petty Motorsports, confirmed Wednesday he is working with Mayfield, but that no suit has yet been filed. “Yes, we’re working hard for Jeremy,” Diehl said. “Either we’ll work it out or the court will. We have not filed yet, but we’re working hard. That’s all I can tell you.” NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston confirmed that Diehl had been in contact with the organization. “I can confirm that Mr. Diehl has been in touch with NASCAR, and we’ve provided him with relevant information pertaining to Jeremy’s suspension, including the toxicology report,” Poston said. Mayfield was not immediately available for comment.(ESPN)(5-20-2009)

The next step in J.C. Stout’s career as a professional stock car driver — the one he certainly would like to take — is to get noticed.Passing cars driven by guys named Busch and Earnhardt during a NASCAR race is one way to do that. Maybe, a team owner looking for a driver would see that happen and be impressed.Stout, with a volunteer crew of relatives and friends, left his Wyoming County home this week with a trailer that had a race car inside to audition for one of those traveling NASCAR shows in Concord, N.C.
The Stellar Quest Racing Team, with Stout at the steering wheel, will attempt to qualify for the NASCAR Nationwide Series Carquest Auto Parts 300. Read more (democratandchronicle.com)

Carmichael takes on the Law at TMS: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie Ricky Carmichael took on the law and … he won. Carmichael, a two-wheel legend more known for his 15 motocross championships, dusted off his former skills and hopped aboard a motocross bike to challenge the Fort Worth Police Department Motorcycle Unit on a skills competition course at Texas Motor Speedway. Carmichael, at TMS to promote the June 5 WinStar World Casino 400 truck series race, competed against Officer Mike Richey in a motorcycle skills course on pit road that involved the same drills given to those training to become a motorcycle officer. The course consisted of three drills – intersection, offset cone weave, and in and out box – built into one course and Carmichael showed no signs of rust. Carmichael, using a Suzuki RM-Z450 provided by Action Suzuki/Kawasaki of Mesquite, ran the course in 49.733 seconds compared to 52.971 seconds of Officer Richey, who was riding a 2009 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. Fans can watch Carmichael and the rest of the truck series drivers compete under the lights during the WinStar World Casino 400 on June 5th.(Texas Motor Speedway PR)(5-20-2009)

ON VERGE OF INDY 500, K&N FILTERS PARTNERS WITH FATHER-AND-DAUGHTER LAWN MOWER RACING TEAM

Glenview, IL (May 20, 2009) – On the verge of the 93rd Indianapolis 500, The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) has announced a partnership with K&N Filters and Ken Jones Racing for the 2009 STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series.

The father-and-daughter race team of Ken and Katie Jones of Mendota, Illinois are now the K&N-sponsored Lawn Mower Racing Team. Ken Jones and his 14 year-old daughter Katie have been fixtures on the lawn mower racing scene for years. Ken is a 15-year USLMRA racing veteran, USLMRA Steering Committee Member, Race Director and President of the Illinois Lawn Mower Racing Association. Katie mowed to 8th place in US National Points in the Junior Prepared Class in 2008 and grew up with racing lawn mowers while at her dad’s side.

“It’s an honor to be selected to represent K&N Filters and to team up with my daughter Katie to represent this fine company” said Ken Jones who races the Number 6 A-Prepared (AP) mower. “Now USLMRA lawn mower racing can take its place among the world-class racing organizations that K&N supports such as the Indy Racing League (IRL), American Motorcycle Association (AMA), NHRA and NASCAR.”

K&N Filters and Ken Jones Racing will be featured on USLMRA telecasts on Fox Sports Net and the Outdoor Channel this fall and will have a prominent display at the 2nd Annual Performance Mowersports Expo during the 17th annual STA-BIL Nationals Weekend, Sept. 3-5 (Labor Day Weekend) in Delaware, Ohio.

K&N Engineering, of Riverside, California, is the inventor and leading innovator of reusable cotton gauze filter technology for automotive applications. K&N is a family-owned business with an enthusiast mindset and a direct connection with motor sports that carries over throughout all levels of management and manufacturing.

K&N is a sales and brand leader for performance filters, and maintains a catalogue of over 3,500 part numbers, including an extensive line of both factory replacement drop-in filters, FIPK (Fuel Injection Performance Kit) applications, and its line of innovative Performance Gold oil filters. K&N is well know for its line of high-flow intake systems, high-flow air filters and wrench-off oil filters.

USLMRA races feature riding lawn mowers with cutting blades removed at speeds up to 60 mph. There are no cash prizes, as racers compete for trophies, glory and bragging rights. Lawn mowers race in four road course classes: Stock (8 mph), IMOW (20 mph), Prepared (50 mph) and Factory Experimental (60 mph).

The USLMRA is sponsored by STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer, an engine additive that keeps stored gas fresh for quick, easy engine starts in power equipment, boats, RV’s cars and trucks. Additional sponsors include Anti Monkey Butt Powder, HEET GasLine Antifreeze, Diesel Power!, 104+ Octane Boost, No Leak Automotive Sealers, Alumaseal and StartYour Engines!.
