NASCAR: Why Are Ratings Down?
NASCAR officials say they are trying to do some research to find out why television ratings dropped 11.5 percent over the first 10 Sprint Cup Series races this season. “It’s not unusual for anyone to see ratings fluctuate,” NASCAR Media Group President Paul Brooks said. “That’s why we like to look at it over the long term and feel we’ve got to focus in on what the problems and issues are. … We have a powerful story to tell. “But that doesn’t mean we’re saying ratings are fickle and they’ll hopefully come back. We’re doing some research. We’re studying everything from commercial patterns, when commercials are run, to how networks break away from the action. Is there a different way to set those pods? Maybe we shouldn’t be breaking away at the pit stops, as the traditional model. What we’re hearing from core fans is that they want to see that. That’s an important part of the race. We’re studying those things.”

Yeley In For Mayfield – Maybe Not
J.J. Yeley will drive the No. 41 Toyota for Mayfield Motorsports starting this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Yeley replaces Jeremy Mayfield, who was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR on Saturday after violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy. “We believe in J.J.’s talent,” said crew chief Tony Furr. “He’s available for every race. So we won’t be changing drivers. J.J. has something to prove just like we all do. We want someone that’s hungry just like us.
…UPDATE…Who will replace the suspended Jeremy Mayfield? That’s the question on everybody’s mind after Tony Furr, crew chief of the No. 41 Jeremy Mayfield Motorsports entry, rescinded earlier comments to FOXSports.com that J.J. Yeley was tabbed for the position. Speaking on behalf of the team, Shana Mayfield said no decision has been made but Yeley is on the short list. Mayfield was suspended indefinitely from NASCAR on Saturday after violating the sanctioning body’s substance abuse policy. The team is expected to name an owner of record shortly, as Mayfield is not allowed to be owner of record during his suspension.

Bowyer Streak Ended
Clint Bowyer headed to Darlington Raceway looking to end a four-week slump that dropped him from second to eighth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings. It appeared the Emporia, Kan., native was headed in the right direction, but a mid-race accident ended his chances for a strong finish and his modern-era record of 83 consecutive races without a DNF (did not finish). The 37th-place finish that Bowyer was credited with marked the first time since Phoenix in November 2006, a streak of 83 races, that he was not listed as running at the conclusion of a Sprint Cup Series race. While he set the record for consecutive starts without a DNF, Bowyer came one race shy of tying the all-time record held by Herman Beam, who did not run his races consecutively, but made 84 starts from 1961-1963 without recording a DNF.

NASCAR: New evidence that Dodge, Chevy maybe forced to cut back: Much has been made of the extent to which Chrysler and General Motors’ financial problems might impact their NASCAR participation. With Chrysler filing for bankruptcy, and General Motors expected to follow suit within the next 10 days, there is cause for concern. Dodge executives have said all the right things regarding the company’s participation in NASCAR — that, despite the bankruptcy, no changes were planned. Now, there is evidence that it may be beyond their control. According to Automotive News, Chrysler wanted to spend $134 million in advertising over the nine weeks it is expected to be in bankruptcy, but the U.S. Treasury’s auto industry task force gave it half that. “So if General Motors, which is wrestling with the possibility of a Chapter 11 filing itself, is wondering how much influence the task force will have over marketing, the answer is plenty,” the publication said. “Transcripts from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, which is hearing the Chrysler case, showed that the task force at least understands that advertising is a necessary expense — even if it doesn’t think Chrysler needs $134 million for nine weeks of car ads.” Meaning what? Meaning that, under bankruptcy — and remaining in business primarily using government money — the government is not hesitating to tell the manufacturers how much money they can spend on marketing, which is where the lion’s share of motorsports funding comes from. Very little — less than ever — comes from research and development. In the government is willing to cut Chrysler’s marketing allocation in half — and that’s half of what Chrysler was asking for, not half of what it is used to spending — then it may be a tough sell to convince the feds that taxpayer dollars should go towards supporting Dodge, which has won just one race this year, Kurt Busch’s victory at Atlanta.(Orlando Sentinel)

McGriff, 81, to attempt some West Series races: Hershel McGriff turned 81 in December but he scoffs at the idea of retirement. And he plans to prove it by entering three races in the Camping World West Series this summer. McGriff, a four-time winner in the Cup Series who made his NASCAR debut as a 22-year-old in the inaugural Southern 500 in 1950, plans to attempt to qualify at three road courses: June 20 at Infineon Raceway, July 19 at Portland International Raceway and Aug. 1 at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. “This is the first time they’ve run Portland since 1986, and I won that race, so I wanted to defend my title,” said McGriff, who resided in nearby Bridal Veil for many years before moving to Arizona. McGriff’s four Cup victories came during the 1954 season, as he traveled back and forth, running both the Grand National and Pacific Coast Late Model Series. McGriff won the 1986 Winston West championship and held Winston West records for most wins (35) and poles (35). He holds the record for most stock-car victories at Riverside International Raceway, where he won 14 times. He made his last Cup start at 65, finishing 43rd at Sonoma in 1993 after engine problems sidelined his #04 Chevrolet.(NASCAR.com)(5-12-2009)

Kyle Busch’s #18 M&M’S car in the Sprint Cup Series will sport a special “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”-themed paint scheme during the June 21, 2009, race at Infineon Raceway, where Busch took the checkered flag last year. The special paint scheme features movie title decals on the hood, trunk and TV panel and the M&M’S® Brand “Red,” “Green” and “Yellow” characters modified into “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” characters.(BusinessWire), see an image of the scheme on my #18 Team Schemes page.(5-12-2009) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2009/18cup.htm

Newman to run Truck race at LMS: Ryan Newman will be making his second career start in the Camping World Truck Series in the #4 Charter Chevy owned by Kevin Harvick Inc for the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Lowe’s Motor Speedwa. Newman’s first career Truck Series start came last October at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where he drove a Kevin Harvick Inc.-owned truck to victory in the E-Z-GO 200. This will be the first race in 2009 that the #4 Chevy will not be driven by KHI rookie driver, Ricky Carmichael. Carmichael is scheduled to return to the seat on June 5 at Texas Motor Speedway.(Kevin Harvick Inc. PR)(5-12-2009)

Experts says NASCAR drug list should be public: A prominent authority on drug testing says the indefinite suspension of Sprint Cup driver Jeremy Mayfield further enhances his belief that the sport needs to provide a public list of banned substances to protect itself legally. Mayfield on Saturday became the first Sprint Cup driver suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. Sources close to the situation said Mayfield claims he took Claritin D, an over-the-counter allergy drug that contains pseudoephedrine, a substance banned by most sports. Mayfield said in a prepared statement that the positive test was the result of combining a prescribed and over-the-counter drug, a possiblity the doctor who runs NASCAR’s drug testing policy denied was plausible. “A combination of an over-the-counter drug taken with a prescription drug could not cause the positive that we took action on,” Dr. David Black of the Tennessee-based Aegis Labs said. But what concerns Dr. Charles Yesalis, a Penn State professor who has testified before Congress on performance-enhancing drugs and spent 25 years researching drug testing, is that drivers are not provided a list of banned substances. The NFL, NBA, MLB PGA Tour and NCAA each make available public lists in their drug testing policies. “That alone to me is ludicrous,” Yesalis said Monday. “That just kind of violates your sense of fair play. It never would fly in MLB or the NFL because they have a union. “The drivers don’t have a union, but if somebody did that to me I’d go get myself a nasty lawyer. What if somebody in management or ownership doesn’t like you? They can use that as a weapon against you.” Black said the lack of a list makes the program stronger because it gives the governing body more flexibility. Yesalis doesn’t disagree that the findings of the test are legitimate. He, too, never has come across a positive test caused by the use of Claritin D, although “if somebody doubled or tripled the dose I wouldn’t want to be next to them at 190 miles per hour going into the first turn at Darlington.” But for legal reasons he believes NASCAR needs to be more up front with what they are looking for. Because his is not considered an appealable offense, legal action could be Mayfield’s only recourse if he chooses to fight the suspension. Sources close to the situation said that hasn’t been determined yet.(ESPN)(5-11-2009)

Kyle Busch, on his career goals. “I’d like to be able to win 200 races over all three (NASCAR national) series. I think that would be a good number. It’s a pretty big number. It’s not as good as Richard Petty’s 200 in the Sprint Cup series.”

Braun to discuss Nationwide COT with NASCAR: Braun Racing owner Todd Braun told Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway that he will meet with NASCAR officials Tuesday to discuss the sanctioning body’s proposed new race car. “NASCAR called me last week, wanting to sit down and get my thoughts on the new car,” he said. Asked if he would favor a 2010 implementation for the new car, Braun said, “Yes, if (NASCAR) tells me today that they’re going to do it. They cannot wait another two months to decide, and once they decide to do it, they can’t change their minds.”(5-11-2009)

Roush Fenway Racing says Ben Williams, who was suspended by NASCAR last week for violating its substance-abuse policy, has resigned and is no longer with the team. Williams served as gas man on Roush Fenway’s #16 NASCAR Nationwide Series team, but a team spokesperson said he has resigned. The team had no other comment.(Scene Daily)(5-11-2009)

Brian Vickers-finishing spot-tenth-With heavy rains washing away Nationwide Series qualifying, the starting line-up was set by owner’s points for Friday night’s Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway. Brian Vickers climbed into the No. 32 Dollar General Toyota for his fifth start in the Braun Racing Camry this season and started the night from the tenth position. “I think the rained-out qualifying definitely hurt us, forcing us to start 10th,” said Vickers. “The guys worked really hard all night to free-up the Dollar General Toyota. It was a good car, probably not the winning car, but worthy of a top-five finish. After that restart and the 29 got really loose, I had nowhere to go and lost a lot of spots. Track position is everything and we just couldn’t get it back.”The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Carquest Auto Parts 200 in two weeks, when Vickers will again be behind the wheel of the No. 32.

Congrats to nineteen-year old James Buescher, who earned his second straight ARCA RE/MAX Series victory of the season by surviving a two-lap restart shootout and crossing the Kentucky Speedway finish line 0.928 of a second ahead of Justin Lofton May 8 in the “Drive Smart. Buckle-Up! Kentucky 150.”
