Keselowski First Time Winner
Brad Keselowski took advantage of the yellow line rule to win his first Sprint Cup race. After nine caution periods the race restarted for the last time with Ryan Newman in the lead and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in second pushing Newman. But from ninth and tenth place, Brad Keselowski was pushing Carl Edwards to the front. On the final lap Keselowski and Edwards caught and passed Newman and Earnhardt. With Edwards in the lead, Keselowski dove low to pass Edwards and Edwards made an attempt to block Keselowski. — Keselowski held his ground and didn’t allow Edwards to push him below the yellow line, a rule in NASCAR that prevents a driver from going below the yellow line. The contact sent Edwards airborne into the catchfence and into Ryan Newman. “I made a run on Carl (Edwards) and he tried to force me below the yellow line,” said Keselowski. “I wasn’t going for it, I’m here to win — you saw what happened to Regan Smith last year. He let Stewart force him below the line and lost the race. I wasn’t going for it.”
Earnhardt finished second and Newman was third. A great run by Marcos Ambrose vaulted him into fourth place and rookie Scott Speed placed fifth. Kurt Busch finished in the sixth spot followed by Greg Biffle, Brian Vickers, rookie Joey Logano and Jeff Burton to round out the top ten. Edwards exited his crumpled car and ran to cross the start-finish line, was 24th. — The next race on the Sprint Cup schedule – the tenth event of 36-races for the 2009 Sprint Cup Championship. The Crown Royal 400 will be on Saturday May 2nd, at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. The race begins at approximately 7:00 p.m. eastern time with live, high-definition coverage provided by FOX beginning with its pre-race show at 6:30 p.m. eastern time. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and PRN radio.

UPSET – Keselowski wins at Talladega: #09-Brad Keselowski won the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway for his first ever career win in only his fifth career start after a wild, wild ending. #99-Edwards and #09-Keselowski drafted past his Nationwide Series boss, #88-Earnhardt Jr. and #39-Newman [who was infront of the #88], and it was just Keselowski and Edwards going for the win, Keselowski went high to pass, Edwards moved over to block and Keselowski moved down and got a run on Edwards and went low, got into Edwards and past the #99. Edwards got sideways and the car got airborne up against the fence and rode the fence for about 30 feet, but the fence held and Edwards got out of the car and jogged to the start-finish line. It was the first ever win in the Sprint Cup series for the #09 and for car owner James Finch [Phoenix Racing]. #88-Earnhardt Jr. finished 2nd, followed by #39-Newman [who's car was trashed when Edwards car bounced off the hood, Newman got across the line], #47-Ambrose, #82-Speed, #2-Busch, #16-Biffle, #83-Vickers, #20-Logano and #31-Burton. There were two “Big One’s” collecting points leader #24-Gordon and #48-Johnson. There were 9 cautions for 33 laps and there were 57 lead changes among 25 drivers.
#09 is the 101st car number to win: when Brad Keselowski won the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, April 26, 2009, it was the first Sprint Cup win ever for a car number 09, being the 101st different car number [as far as I can calculate] that has won in the Cup series. It was also Brad Keselowski’s first Cup Series win. See all the wins by car numbers on my Wins by Car Numbers page.(4-26-2009)

Eight fans injured in Edwards wreck: Eight spectators suffered injuries at the end of the Aaron’s 499 Sunday when the #99 Ford of Carl Edwards went airborne and slammed into the catchfence on the frontstretch. “None of the injuries are dangerous or life-threatening,” said Dr. Bobby Lewis, medical director at Talladega Superspeedway. “It’s mostly bumps and bruises with possible minor fractures.” Two women were airlifted to an area hospital, but Lewis said that was for traffic concerns and not because of the severity of their injuries. “One has a lacerated lip and possible broken jaw,” Lewis said. “The other person was not injured, but has unrelated medical problems.” When the car hit the catchfence, pieces exploded off the car as catch fencing bent back severely, but did not break. “I’m not sure if it was pieces of car or pieces of debris from the fence that hurt the spectators,” Lewis said.(ESPN)(4-26-2009)
Race Fast Facts – Talladega:
Brad Keselowski won the Aaron’s 499, his first victory in five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
This is his first victory and first top-10 finish in 2009.
This is his first victory and first top-10 finish in one races at Talladega Superspeedway.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. (second) posted his 11th top-10 finish in 19 races at Talladega Superspeedway. It is his third top-10 finish in 2009.
Ryan Newman (third) posted his seventh top-10 finish in 15 races at Talladega Superspeedway.
Scott Speed (fifth) was the highest finishing rookie.
Kurt Busch leads the point standings by 5 points over Jeff Gordon.(NASCAR Statistics)(4-26-2009)
Rookie’s run well at Talladega: #82-Scott Speed scored a fifth-place finish in the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, his best finish in 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts. #20-Joey Logano grabbed a ninth-place finish, his best effort in 12 Sprint Cup Series starts and his first top-10. #13-Max Papis was credited with an 18th-place finish, his best in five Sprint Cup Series starts and first ever lead lap finish. All three Raybestos Rookies scored their best career Sprint Cup Series finish in today’s race at Talladega: Speed, Logano and Max Papis. Logano claimed a ninth-place finish while Papis was credited with 18th-place. All three drivers finished on the lead lap. Speed grabbed Raybestos Rookie of the Race honors for the third time this season. Logano leads Speed by eight points (98-90) in the Raybestos Rookie standings. Speed became the first Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five finish since David Ragan placed third in the 2007 Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway, a span of 54 races. Speed became the first Raybestos Rookie to score a top-five finish in the spring race at Talladega since Kurt Busch placed third in 2001. Speed and Logano became the first pair of Raybestos Rookie to finish in the top-10 in the spring race at Talladega since 1980 [Lake Speed (no relation) and Jody Ridley](Camp and Assoc PR)(4-27-2009)
Did Not Finish Streak and stats: #33-Bowyer has been running at the finish in 82 consecutive races [the team fixed the car after the wreck at Talladega and Bowyer finished the race], the longest current streak and the new modern era record [he was tied with #29-Harvick at 81], next up is #78-Regan Smith at 46 [but has not run all the races]. The all-time record for the longest streak of NOT having an DNF is 84 races held by Herman Beam from April 30, 1961 thru March 10, 1963 [Beam didn't run all the races, but didn't DNF in 84 straight consecutive races that he ran]. Kevin Harvick holds the modern era (1972-present) record at 81 [he also has the 3rd longest at 58], then Jeff Gordon at 56 and Dale Earnhardt at 53 [Indy in 1996 thru Martinsville in the spring of 1998.(4-27-2009)
#47 crew member returns after suspension: The crew member who chased a tire across pit road has returned from a four-race suspension and is in the pits at Talladega Superspeedway. Jimmy Watts returned on Sunday as the gas man on #47-Marcos Ambrose's crew. He is still on probation through the end of the year. Watts chased a rolling tire across pit road and into the infield grass when it got away from Ambrose's stall at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He put on his apron required of all gas men and went to work shortly before the green flag dropped at Talladega. NASCAR had suspended Watts under a rule that prohibits crew members from going onto the racetrack while cars are racing or while cars are running under yellow or red flags.(Associated Press)(4-27-2009)
Quickest wins by a driver: When #09-Brad Keselowski won the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, it was in his 5th career start. Jamie McMurray holds the modern era record for fastest to win when he won in his second start at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Oct 2002, and John Rostek won in his 2nd career start in April 1960 at Arizona State Fairgrounds. Kevin Harvick won in his third start, when he won at Atlanta in March 2001 as did Dan Gurney in 1963. Three drivers won in their first start: Johnny Rutherford won a Daytona Qualifying race in his first start back in 1963, back then the Qualifier races counted as wins and the championship and points. Jack White won in his first start in 1949, the 5th race of the season and of course Jim Roper won in his first start, the first race ever held by NASCAR in 1949.(4-27-2009)
Latest on the future of the #8 car: Steve Lauletta, president of Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, says that efforts continue to find sponsorship for the #8 car [with driver Aric Almirola] that the team quit running earlier this month. “I’m hoping that something’s going to come forward pretty quick,” Lauletta said. “I think what we’re looking at right now is a second half of the season into 2010 if we can get one of these deals done.”(Roanoke Times)(4-26-2009)
Goodyear still looking for right compound for Indy: NASCAR and Goodyear made progress in finding a suitable tire for Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but drivers who participated in testing at the 2.5-mile oval this week said work remains to solve the durability issues that turned last year’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard into a debacle. Ryan Newman of Stewart-Haas Racing said teams worked through several compounds and constructions bud “didn’t really see anything that is ideal.” Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers said the tires lasted longer than in the 2008 race but not as long enough for a full fuel run. Last season, NASCAR had to throw a caution flag every 10 to 12 laps to avoid blowouts. “It was an embarrassment for the sport, and I commend NASCAR and Goodyear (for) going above and beyond to try to get this problem fixed,” Vickers said. “They’re looking for perfection. Unfortunately from what I’ve seen, we’re going to have a fast tire. There’s just no way around it. When you make these tires slower and harder, they just slide across the pavement and because of that grooving it just turns into a shredder. So we’re going to have to have a softer, faster tire that essentially will grip the track instead of sliding across it to make it last.”(USA Today)(4-26-2009)

David Ragan Wins First NASCAR Race
David Ragan blew by Ryan Newman on the final lap of the Aaron’s 312 Nationwide Series race at Talladega on Saturday, to win his first national touring NASCAR race. The race went to overtime when Justin Allgaier and Bobby Gerhart crashed with three laps to go. That set up a green-white-checkers finish and a battle ensued between leader Ryan Newman and second place runner Dale Earnhardt Jr. — Earnhardt waited until the final lap and the final turn to make his move on Newman. Earnhardt went to the outside of Newman and Newman blocked him. That slowed both Newman and Earnhardt down enough to allow third place David Ragan the opportunity to take the lead only a few feet from the start-finish line.
“It was an exciting race,” said Ragan. “We had a problem with water temps at the beginning of the race, but we got it fixed. We’ve been waiting a long time for this. I saw the leader ahead and the #5 car going at it and I thought to myself, I’ll jump to the outside and see what happens — and it worked out.”
Newman held onto second place with Joey Logano nailing down the third spot. Tony Raines had a rare top-five finish, placing in the fourth position. Earnhardt Jr. finished fifth followed by Jason Leffler, Jason Keller, Scott Lagasse Jr., Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch to round out the top ten.

Aaron’s Extends Talladega sponsorship: Aaron’s Rents, Inc. has extended its contract for title sponsorship on both the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The nation’s leader in rental sales and lease ownership activated a clause in its contract that allows the company to extend its role as title sponsor for multiple years.(Talladega Superspeedway PR)(4-26-2009)
Bobby Hamilton Jr. enjoying ownership, but wants to drive: Bobby Hamilton Jr. has three cars racing in two different cities this weekend, and while he enjoys his ownership role, he still wishes he was driving. Hamilton Jr. is a co-owner of #24-Rensi-Hamilton Racing, which fields a car for Eric McClure in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. That shop is in North Carolina, and Hamilton Jr. is more of an investor in that organization. He is much more involved in his two Hamilton Racing cars running this weekend. Across from the Nationwide Series garage of McClure at Talladega, Hamilton Jr. stood Thursday in the Automobile Racing Club of America garage overlooking the car he owns for Chase Mattioli. That ARCA car was built in Hamilton Jr.’s Nashville, Tenn., shop, as well as the Camping World East Series car he fields for Kristin Bumbera, who will race Saturday at Tri-County Motor Speedway in North Carolina. The 31-year-old Hamilton Jr., who hasn’t raced this season, has mixed emotions when he sees his cars pull out on the track. Hamilton Jr. just doesn’t want to drive for himself. He doesn’t want to worry about being the boss and driver at the same time, concerned about budgets and personnel as he’s racing. Hamilton Jr. would like to see Hamilton Racing grow to a Nationwide Series team or Camping World Truck Series team.(Scene Daily)(4-24-2009)
