Alan Gustafson Crew Chief Of Race
Alan Gustafson, crew chief for the No. 5 CARQUEST/Kelloggs Chevy driven by Mark Martin, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Martin led 104 laps of the 312-lap event and went on to win his first race in more than three years. The Gustafson-led team had consistent and precise pit stops throughout the race, after starting from the pole position. “We had a great race car, great pit stops, and great strategy [by crew chief, Gustafson]” said Martin. With 52 laps to go, Martin came in for his last green flag pit stop, and Gustafson informed his driver that he had enough gas to make it to the end. “Alan” [who as a kid idolized Martin], “did well, I gave him the opportunity the last couple of stops and he made all of the right calls - our car was a rocket ship the last two runs.”

Goodyear Tests Extended
Richard Petty Motorsports driver Reed Sorenson says that Goodyear officials will extend their Indianapolis Motor Speedway tire test into Wednesday for four drivers because of rain that has continually interrupted their efforts. Sorenson, Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Ryan Newman and Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers began testing tires at the track Monday as Goodyear officials work to find a better tire for this season’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the track after a 2008 event in which drivers had to pit regularly because of issues with tire wear. Sorenson said that he’s pleased with the tire the drivers have been working with, though rain has hampered their ability to get many laps on it.

Probation For Mears, Earnhardt
NASCAR announced today that it has placed Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Casey Mears on probation for the next six races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as a result of their on-track incident last Saturday at the conclusion of the race at Phoenix International Raceway. Earnhardt, driver of the No. 88 team and Mears, driver of the No. 07 team, both violated Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing; hitting another competitor’s car after the race had concluded) of the 2009 NASCAR rule book. The probation takes effect beginning with this weekend’s event at Talladega Superspeedway.

Waltrip Donates To Tornado Victims
NASCAR driver and race team owner Michael Waltrip watched TV storm coverage in his Nashville hotel room as Good Friday tornadoes hit the Murfreesboro area. He was in the area to race April 11 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series 300 at Nashville Superspeedway. Growing up in Owensboro, Ky., Waltrip knew the dangers of tornadoes and after seeing the devastation wanted to reach out to storm victims here. Waltrip, through his race team and sponsor, Best Western, donated $7,500 to the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties to help tornado relief efforts. “I know what those storms can produce,” Waltrip said. “As a kid I know how scared I was of tornadoes. My heart genuinely goes out to those of you that were affected by the storm. Not only my heart goes out to you, but on behalf of Michael Waltrip Racing and Best Western, we’ve donated $7,500 cash and a bunch of rooms for those that have been moved out of their homes. Hopefully, that help will make the relief effort that the United Way is providing for the area go a little farther.”

McDowell replaces Blaney UPDATE: the updated entry list for the Aarons 499 at Talladega Superspeedway shows Michael McDowell now driving the #66 Prism Motorsports Toyota for owner Phil Parsons and not Dave Blaney, who has ran six races for the team in 2009. No word if this is a permanent move or just for Talladega. See my Talladega Entry page. McDowell ran in 20 Sprint Cup races in the #00 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing in 2008 with a best finish of 18th at Darlington.(4-21-2009)
UPDATE: hearing that Blaney had a family obligation for this weekend [Apr 25-26] and will return to the #66 car at Richmond, McDowell was kind enough to step in to help the team out.(4-22-2009)

Roush Fenway Racing increases pledge to be more sustainable: It’s been 40 years since Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day and on this day of ecological awareness, Roush Fenway Racing is upping their pledge to promote more sustainable operations and better environmental management. Always a leader in the sport of NASCAR on and off track, Roush Fenway has been working with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to reinforce its position as a leader in environmental stewardship in the industry. Through the team’s current efforts, they recycle almost 96% of every race car. In 2008, the team recycled over 66 tons of waste (plastic, paper and metal); reduced the overall amount of waste produced by more than 11 tons; reduced storm water run off by 1.51M gallons; and saved 2.10M gallons of water by not using potable water for irrigation.
As a next step, Roush Fenway Racing pledges to meet or exceed its corporate environmental target of an overall 10% improvement in indoor air quality; reduction of water consumption; increase in waste reduction and recycling; and improvement in energy usage over the next 18 months. The team has commissioned an independent energy audit through Electricities and the Carolina Consulting Group in cooperation with the City of Concord (N.C.) to further identify opportunities to reduce its power consumption. These efforts are applauded by the NRDC.(Roush Fenway Racing PR)(4-22-2009)

Different colors for Edwards at ‘Dega: The #99 team of Carl Edwards will carry the Claritin paint scheme this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. This is the first and only time in 2009 Edwards’ Ford Fusion will don the Claritin design. The Claritin crew will be unloading chassis RK-629 this weekend. This is the same Ford Fusion that Edwards raced in this year’s Daytona 500. He started that race 16th and was relegated to an 18th-place finish after rain shortened the event.(RFR PR)(4-22-2009)

Martin’s win was his 400th Top-10: #5-Mark Martin not only won, but he also picked up his 400th career top-10 finish, and did it in style. He’s just the fourth driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to pick up 400 top-10 finishes, but he’s the only one to do it without winning a title. The most career top-10s in Cup history:
Driver — Top 10s — Titles
Richard Petty — 712 — 7
Bobby Allison — 446 — 1
Dale Earnhardt — 428 — 7
Mark Martin — 400 — 0*

Montoya signed for a few more years: from a GM Racing Transcript, #42-Juan Pablo Montoya was asked: “How long is your contract for that you’re currently under? Do you miss Formula One at all?”, Montoya said: “My contract is still a couple years, two, three, four, five, I don’t know. I’m not going to tell you actually how long is my contract (laughter). But I don’t miss Formula One at all.”(GM Racing Transcript)(4-22-2009)

McMurray to make a visit: On Thursday April 23, #26-Jamie McMurray will visit Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Redstone Arsenal was built in 1941 to produce conventional chemical ammunition for use in World War II. For more than 40 years, Redstone has been the heart of the Army’s rocket and missile programs. McMurray will tour the facility and meet with the soldiers on the base on behalf of Crown Royal.(RFR PR)(4-22-2009)

Hendrick Motorsports plane crash trial starts: A trial to determine who was responsible for the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash that killed 10 people Oct. 24, 2004, on the way to a NASCAR Cup race at Martinsville Speedway is scheduled to begin Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Winston-Salem, N.C. At issue is who is responsible for the accident – HMS Holdings (parent company of Hendrick Motorsports), the pilots themselves or the government, which is responsible for the air-traffic controllers. The trial covers five cases involving widows Dianne Dorton (wife of HMS engine builder Randy Dorton), Linda Turner (wife of HMS general manager Jeff Turner), and Tracy Lathram (wife of Tony Stewart pilot Scott Lathram, a passenger on the plane); HMS Holdings; the pilots’ estates; and the United States. According to court documents, the crash resulted when the pilots overshot the airport by five miles and failed to follow the missed-approach procedure for the Martinsville/Blue Ridge Airport, which requires a climbing right turn to avoid Bull Mountain. The plane, in heavy cloud cover, climbed without turning and crashed into the mountain, killing all 10 aboard.(SceneDaily)(4-22-2009)

Revamped TonyStewart.com Unleashed on the Web: The 2009 racing season ushered in a new era in the career of Tony Stewart. The two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion has a new team, a new number and new sponsors. It’s only fitting that he has a new website – www.TonyStewart.com. The official TonyStewart.com has been redeveloped from top to bottom, coinciding with Stewart’s new role as a driver and owner with Stewart-Haas Racing, the two-car Sprint Cup team he co-owns with Oxnard, Calif.-based Haas Automation, the largest CNC machine tool builder in the western world.(TSC PR)(4-22-2009)

Newman’s Team Captures Tissot Pit Road Win in Phoenix: Ryan Newman’s team claimed the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway. The #39 team out of the Stewart-Haas Racing stable became the season’s sixth winner of the pit road competition. The Tissot pit road win was awarded to Newman’s crew as a result of the team’s #39 Chevrolet Impala SS spending the least amount of time on pit road – 234.393 seconds – during the 312-lap event at the one-mile oval. Newman’s pit crew consists of: Adam Davis (front-tire changer), Josh Mick (front-tire carrier), Brandon Blake (rear-tire changer), James Houk (rear-tire carrier), Andrew Turner (jackman), Michael Moore (gasman), Andy Rueger (catch can) and Jay Guarneri (eighth man). For winning the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award, the #39 team will receive $5,000. The team with the most pit road wins at the completion of the 36-race schedule will earn a $100,000 bonus plus Tissot watches for the driver and over-the-wall crew members.(Tissot PR)(4-22-2009)

Hamlin Makes Special Delivery to Unsuspecting Race Fan: Lowe’s Motor Speedway officials and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver #11-Denny Hamlin surprised Concord resident Ken Vogl with a special delivery of four tickets to the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600 today. “This certainly wasn’t expected,” said Vogl, who is a self-professed fan of Hamlin. “I knew that someone from the speedway was delivering some tickets that I had supposedly won, but I had no idea they would be delivered in a pace car by Denny Hamlin! I’ve been a fan of Denny’s since before he was racing in Cup, so to have a chance to meet him and get tickets to the Coca-Cola 600 all at once is a dream come true.” The ticket giveaway was a compliment to Hamlin’s “Win Denny’s Seats” program, where he is giving away tickets to each Sprint Cup Series race in 2009 to NASCAR fans who sign up on his Web site. Tickets for the May 24 Coca-Cola 600 are available for as little as $49. Convenient payment plan options and multi-day ticket packages are also available. Here’s to 40 Years … The 2009 season marks Richard Childress’ 40th anniversary as a team owner in NASCAR’s top division. Childress’ first Sprint Cup Series start came at the famed Alabama race track on Sept. 14, 1969. The owner-driver went on to capture seven top-five and 75 top-10 finishes in 285 starts before hiring Earnhardt in 1981 to drive his race cars. Since then, Childress has transformed his Welcome, N.C.-based operation to a four-team empire and accumulated six Sprint Cup Series championships, 89 wins, 43 poles, 375 top fives and 763 top-10s over 1,890 starts with 24 different drivers. At the same time, RCR has amassed five NASCAR Nationwide Series championships along with a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. Childress is also the first NASCAR team owner to win championships in all three of NASCAR’s national touring series.

DONOHUE’S SCCA CHAMPIONSHIP WINNING CARS WILL BE FEATURED AT OPENING DAY
Donohue Drove 1960 Elva Courier and 1965 Shelby Mustang GT-350R to Championships

WATKINS GLEN, NY (April 21, 2009) – Mark Donohue claimed numerous victories during his days racing in SCCA sanctioned events and the 1960 Elva Courier and 1965 Shelby Mustang GT-350R he drove to separate SCCA championships will be part of the festivities during Opening Day at Watkins Glen International on Sunday, April 26th. Both cars will be on display and hit the twists and turns of The Glen during the Mark Donohue tribute laps scheduled for noon on April 26th. Opening Day is also the last day to take advantage of the advance sale ticket prices for any 2009 racing event held at the racetrack this summer.

Donohue began his racing career following his graduation from Brown University in 1959. He purchased the Elva Courier as a street car and converted it to a race car making it the first race car he ever owned. He won a total of 28 races in the Courier and in 1961, Donohue claimed the SCCA E-Production National Championship, the first of his illustrious career.

In 1965, Donohue competed in the Shelby Mustang GT-350R and put together a very impressive season on his way to the Northeast Division SCCA, B Production Championship. He won a total of six races with a second place finish in another and in the process earned an invitation to the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) at Daytona. The 28 year-old driver qualified on the outside pole for the A & B production race and led for a large portion of the race. Unfortunately the centrifugal force caused by Daytona’s high banking caused his right rear tire to rub against the rear leaf spring which resulted in a blown tire and a 10th place finish.

Opening Day at WGI will feature a full day of on-track activity and the official release of the new Mark Donohue biography titled Mark Donohue: Technical Excellence at Speed from

David Bull Publishing authored by Michael Argetsinger with a foreword by legendary car owner Roger Penske. Two versions of the new book will be available to purchase at the track, including the publisher’s edition for $99.95, and the regular edition for $39.95. In addition to the two SCCA championship cars, the six other cars currently scheduled to appear are the rare 1973 Penske PC-1/003 Formula 1 car, 1973 Eagle-Offy Indy Car, 1967 Trans-Am Camaro, 1973 Porsche 917-30 Can-Am car, and two Lola T70 Can-Am cars.

For only $20, fans can drive three laps around the same turns as Mark Donohue and many legends of Motorsports on Opening Day. Gates will open at 9:00am with laps starting at 10:00am and ending at 3:00pm including a half hour break for the Mark Donohue Tribute Laps at noon. Proceeds from Opening Day will benefit the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC). Additional information on the weekend’s activities can be found either at the Center’s website www.racingarchives.org or the Watkins Glen International website, www.TheGlen.com.

Tickets for the entire 2009 season at Watkins Glen International are on sale now! For tickets and information, please contact the WGI ticket office at 866-461-RACE or log on to the official Watkins Glen website at www.TheGlen.com. Tickets, gift certificates and track merchandise can be all purchased at The Shop located at 2 North Franklin Street in downtown Watkins Glen, Open Monday-Friday 9-5, Saturday 9-4, Closed Sunday; 607-535-2338.

Smith’s Talladega Return will be in National Day of Prayer Car

TALLADEGA, Ala. (April 21, 2009) – The mere mention of Talladega Superspeedway brings out an emotion for Regan Smith, who feels he won the last Sprint Cup race contested at the 2.66-mile oval.

Smith’s return to the Alabama track for this weekend’s Cup race will be in the No. 78 National Day of Prayer Chevrolet for Furniture Row Racing. This is the fourth straight year at the Talladega spring race that the Denver, Colo.-based Furniture Row company is donating space on the car to National Day of Prayer, an annual observance established by Congress and held on the first Thursday in May. (nationaldayofprayer.org)

“It’s hard not to think about that last lap,” said Smith, who led the field to the checkered flag in the October Talladega race, but saw victory taken away when NASCAR ruled that he passed Tony Stewart on the final lap below the out-of-bounds yellow line. The penalty relegated Smith to an 18th-place finish in his Dale Earnhardt Inc. entry.

“I was being blocked and it was either passing Stewart or crashing the field,” explained Smith. ”I felt I made the proper move and won the race.”

Though it would have been his first career Cup win, Smith harbors no ill feelings towards Talladega. In fact, the 25-year-old driver said he enjoys Talladega’s big track and looks forward to racing four wide.

“Talladega brings out all of the emotions,” offered Smith, the 2008 Raybestos Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year. “I’ve always liked racing there – it’s 500 miles of excitement and mind games — an incredible rush. It will be an honor to drive the No. 78 Chevy with the National Day of Prayer paint scheme.”

Smith, who is in his first season with Furniture Row Racing, feels he can again contend for a win at Talladega.

“Furniture Row has a history of operating a strong superspeedway program,” said Smith. “The team sat on the pole at last year’s Talladega race. We also had a solid performance in this year’s Daytona 500. So, right now I am feeling upbeat about this weekend. But first things first — we’re still a go-or-go-home team and need to qualify.”

With Furniture Row Racing running a limited schedule in 2009, the Talladega race will be Smith’s fifth Cup event of the season. He has qualified in the previous four races he entered with a best starting position of ninth, which was at last week’s event in Phoenix.

“We’ve had some good runs this year,” noted Smith. “We were a top-15 car in Phoenix last week but had some issues on pit road. We also had solid runs in Las Vegas (19th) and Daytona (21st). This is a committed team and we eagerly look forward to each race that we enter.”

#29 CLINT BOWYER QUOTES:Q-You’re running the Nationwide Series event in addition to the Sprint Cup Series race. What’s the package like for those cars? It seems like an exciting race.“The Nationwide cars have always run well at the restrictor-plate races, it’s always exciting. I’m looking forward to it. It’s a fun track. It’s fun to learn the draft and continue to learn with every race we run there. I’m ready to win one of these races. I think we’ve run up front enough and now it’s time for us to win one of them.”Q-Is it tough now with the way the Nationwide Series is? As long as you can keep up with the draft, you’ve got a shot to win. You can qualify dead last and it really doesn’t matter, you’ve got a shot to win if you make the right moves. It makes for an exciting race, that’s for sure.”

Brendan Gaughan will be signing autographs on behalf of 5-Hour Energy, this Friday, at the Piggly Wiggly location in Talladega, AL from 4-5PM. The 5-Hour Energy Chevrolet show car will be on display as well. Piggly Wiggly, 320 W. Battle St., Talladega, AL 35160 (RWR) (04-21-09)

Cook spreading the word about Autism: April is Autism Awareness Month: “I [Terry Cook] am encouraging everyone who has a child or knows someone with a child to take a few minutes in the month of April to learn more about Autism. This is something that hit close to home with Amy and me when our son Cody was diagnosed at 18 months of age. We learned that 1 out of 150 kids are diagnosed every day with this and early intervention is the key to helping your child or someone you know get the help they need. It is not your typical movie like “Rain Man” all the time. We know a lot of people in the racing industry who are affected, either with their own child or a family member, by Autism. So all of us are encouraging everyone to log on to autismspeaks.org right now to learn more.” Cook, driving the #25 HT Motorsports Toyota, will be making his ninth NCWTS start at Kansas Speedway this weekend.(HT Motorsports PR)(4-21-2009)

Three Former Champs Battle For Points Lead At Kansas
04-21-2009 | TruckSeries.com Report
Three Former Champs Battle For Points Lead At Kansas Due to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule at Talladega Superspeedway, Kyle Busch will not be competing at Kansas this weekend, leaving the points lead up for the taking. While it’s mathematically possible for drivers in second through eighth place to take the lead, it’s a safe bet that either Todd Bodine (No. 30 Ventrilo Toyota), Ron Hornaday Jr. (No. 33 Copart Chevrolet) or Mike Skinner (No. 5 Toyota) will walk away the new leader following the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 on Saturday.
