Two teams going opposite directions – Front Row Motorsports and Roush Fenway?
by: Doug Turnbull
Front Row Motorsports driver John Andretti, who sees his No. 34 team locked into the Top 35, after it bought the Chip Ganassi’s No. 41 owner’s points from last season, says that the team plans to run the entire Sprint Cup schedule, though he will miss two races in May because of the Indy 500. No replacement driver has been named.
On the flipside of the equation sits Roush Fenway Racing, which will be forced to downsize from five to four teams after this season. A published report this week states that the team that may have to go is the No. 26 of driver Jamie McMurray. Read the rest at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/3426

MIS To Rebuild Infield
Michigan International Speedway officials announced the first phase of a broad master plan that includes a significant redesign of the speedway’s infield. Phase One of the plan, approved by the speedway’s parent company, International Speedway Corporation, includes a more than $17 million reconstruction of the current terrace suites and media center in the track’s infield. Demolition and construction will begin immediately following the track’s August NASCAR weekend and will be ready for the 2010 season at the track. The two-story design calls for 30 corporate suites that span the second floor of the structure. A number of the suites will include movable walls so areas can expand or decrease based on partners’ needs, building upon MIS’ philosophy to tailor custom packages to each partners’ business goals. The structure’s first floor is a state-of-the-art media, technology and meeting center. Print, radio and TV journalists, including their photographer counterparts from across all news mediums, will have ample space to work and cover MIS’ popular events. Separate rooms for large press conferences and competitor meetings will also be housed on the first floor, near a new kitchen and press dining area.
Ten Set for Induction into West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame
The West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame has announced 10 new members for induction in ceremonies to be held July 3 at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California. The 2009 class is the sixth in the history of the Hall which inducted its first members in 2002. The Hall, founded in 2001, memorializes significant contributors to the sport’s development and history – including designers, engineers, mechanics, drivers, race track owners, promoters, publicists and members of the motorsports media. The latest group brings the Hall’s membership to 83. The nomination process began earlier this year followed by a final vote by the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors. Elected in the Historic category (1930 through 1969) are Ben Gregory, brothers Joe and John Fernandez, Bert Letner, Chuck Meekins, Dick Rathman and Art Watts. Inductees from the Modern era (1970 to present) are Chuck Bown, Rick Carelli, Doug George and Wayne Spears.
Phoenix Goodyear Tire Notes
Teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will run the same tire codes at Phoenix this week — this left-side tire (D-4240) is slightly different than the one run at Phoenix last season — this year’s left-side features a compound change to offer more grip — this tire set-up came out of a Goodyear tire test at Phoenix in mid-January — drivers participating in that test were A.J. Allmendinger (Dodge), Joey Logano (Toyota), Jamie McMurray (Ford) and Martin Truex Jr. (Chevrolet) — teams in these two series will also run this same combination of left- and right-side tires at Richmond in two weeks — as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Phoenix.

RPM locks up Allmendinger: Richard Petty Motorsports has picked up the option on #44-AJ Allmendinger’s contract, locking up the driver through 2010. According to multiple sources, Joe Gibbs Racing had inquired about Allmendinger’s status as they consider starting up a fourth team. RPM had an Aug. 15 deadline to pick up Allmendinger’s option for 2010.(FoxSports)(4-17-2009)

Bowles wins Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150: Jason Bowles had one shot at Steve Park and made it count. Bowles jumped to the lead going into Turn 1 at Phoenix International Raceway at the start of a green-white-checkered finish, and rolled the #6 Sunrise Ford Ford to the victory Thursday in the Jimmie Johnson Foundation 150 Presented by Shamrock Farms. It was Bowles’ seventh career victory and first of the season in the NASCAR Camping World Series West. Bowles led four times for 86 laps at the one-mile oval Thursday. He briefly lost the lead to Park’s #35 Waste Management Recycle America Chevrolet following a Lap 139 restart. Bowles managed to get by Park with five laps to go, but a late-race spin gave Park another shot at Bowles. Points leader Eric Holmes also got by Park in a wild scramble on the final restart to grab second. Park came home third, followed by Mike David and pole sitter Greg Pursley. Sprint Cup driver, David Gilliland, finished 32nd of 33 drivers after an early wreck.(PIR site)(4-17-2009)
Biffle goes off road Racing: With the Nevada desert in Primm, NV as the backdrop, #16-Greg Biffle got behind the wheel of Ford’s newest truck, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor R, after company engineers requested his feedback. An avid truck lover, Biffle jumped at the opportunity to go off-roading at a desert race for the first time in his life as part of this weekend’s “Terrible’s 250” Best in the Desert Racing Association event. “That is so much fun I might quit my day job, I’m not sure,” said Biffle after making two laps around the three-mile course. “That is certainly a thrill. I’ve never done something like that before and I can see why these guys do this on a weekly basis because it’s a kick in the pants. This thing is unbelievable. I’ve never been off the ground in a production truck. I’ve been off the ground in my sand car or something like that, but never anything like this. A jump like we made, I’d be a little nervous to jump that in my sand car, but it’s incredible. I can’t even begin to explain what that was like.” In addition to Biffle, Ford also invited Lindsey Weenk, driver of the Blue Thunder F-150 in the Monster Jam Truck Series, to test out the F-150 SVT Raptor. The truck, which will be available in showrooms later this summer, is being raced in all five BITD events this season by former Ford Rough Riders Steve Olliges and Rob MacCachren. Biffle spent about three hours in the desert driving and learning about the truck before flying to Phoenix, where he will be competing in Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway.(Ford Racing site)(4-17-2009)
Harvick visits Luke Air Force Base: #29-Kevin Harvick, on Thursday, visited hundreds of airmen at Luke Air Force Base. Harvick, partially sponsored by the Veteran of Foreign Wars, plays a key role in the Salute to the Military program at Phoenix International Raceway that began four years ago. In Thursday’s visit to the base, Harvick answered questions from the fans and signed autographs. “We’ve been fortunate to have a relationship with the VFW, and we’ve been able to do a lot of things like this,” said Harvick, also a team owner in the Nationwide and Camping World Truck series. “Today, it’s obviously great to be a part of the people who make it happen for us to live our lives how we’re able to live them. So we’re all pretty fortunate to live in a country like we do, and to be able to support the people who make the sacrifices to make sure we have that is pretty neat just to be a part of.” Col. Henry Reed was grateful for Harvick’s presence and involvement. “It really connects our airmen in a sport that is generally very, very popular amongst military, so whenever we get the opportunity to have a great driver like Kevin come out and interact with our airmen and their families, sign autographs, talks to their kids and answer questions, it’s a great morale boost,” he said. “You add into the fact that PIR and VFW gave us 2,000 tickets for these airmen . . . I’m continually amazed by the outstanding community support that we have here at Luke, and we’re blessed to have it.” PIP President Bryan Sperber said supporting the military and giving back to the community is a common theme of NASCAR: “I can tell you every driver and their teams, in their own way, support the U.S. military even when the cameras aren’t there. The entire sport is so proud of the job the U.S. military does, and it’s very easy for us to want to do everything that we can to say thank you and support them.”(Arizona Republic)(4-17-2009)
Kenseth takes fan on test drive: Chuck Fountain, of Plymouth, Minn., got the test drive of his life Tuesday when reigning Daytona 500 champion Matt Kenseth took him for a ride around his hometown in a 2010 Ford Fusion and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Fountain earned the visit from Kenseth after his name was drawn as part of Ford Racing’s yearlong “We Race. You Win.” national on-line sweepstakes. Each time a Ford driver wins a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points event this season, one lucky fan and a guest will win an all-expenses paid trip to Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway from Nov. 20-22. During the race weekend, one of those fans will win the grand prize of a 2010 Ford Fusion. Kenseth’s visit and test drive was a one-time only event, and was a bonus Fountain appreciated. “It’s been an experience I’ll never forget. I feel very fortunate,” said Fountain. “Getting that first-hand experience really is what it’s all about. You can read an article about the Fusion in a magazine or on the Internet, but having that experience and hearing it from the experts, that’s really interesting. I know driving down here on (Route) 169, Matt was showing on the Fusion how the blind spot warning indicator on the side mirrors works. I had never seen that before. That was fascinating. He knows that car. He’s got one on order, for crying out loud.”(Ford Racing Site)(4-17-2009)

Celebrated on May 15, NASCAR Day is an opportunity for fans, corporations, schools and organizations across the country to donate to The NASCAR Foundation to raise funds to help thousands of children live better lives. Specifically, the money raised will support the Susan G. Komen Scholarship Fund – a fund specifically designed for children whose mothers have lost their battle against cancer.(NASCAR PR).
Chase Notes: #16-Greg Biffle shook off two Bottom 10 finishes in the first six races and carded a third place finish at Texas, lifting him eight spots all the way to 15th place, now only 60 points out. #42-Juan Pablo Montoya lurks in 13th place, 16 points out, but he was even closer at this juncture in 2007 in his rookie season, 12 points out. He’s improved six positions over this point in 08, and is leading the way for the Earnhardt/Ganassi stable. Engine problems have parked #5-Mark Martin twice. Dover International Speedway which has been hosting NASCAR races since 1969, has closed its infield to fan parking. The decision wasn’t necessarily based on the current state of the economy however, but the lack of fan interest according to the track. “As we evaluated the attendance in that area, year-to-year, it continued to decrease and didn’t make sense from a business perspective to continue to operate it,” said Gary Camp, Director of Public Relations at Dover. “Every year, the numbers were essentially cut in half from the prior year. Around 100 customers paid to park in the infield for the Sept. 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Fans can experience a race for much less by purchasing a grandstand seat to the event. And the view from the grandstands is certainly much better.”(NASCAR Examiner)(4-16-2009)

Florida businessman Eddie Smith, who was a co-owner of some of the vehicles driven by Rich Bickle in the 1990s in what are now known as the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, is back in the NASCAR garage. Smith has formed a partnership with former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield to buy the assets of the Chip Ganassi Racing Nationwide Series team. Holyfield has attended races in the past and is familiar with the sport, and Smith said Holyfield will attend races as his schedule permits. In other news, A legal notice that ran Wednesday in a small local newspaper said Holyfield’s estate will be auctioned off “at public outcry to the highest bidder for cash” at the Fayette County courthouse on July 1. The 54,000-square-foot home — located on Evander Holyfield Highway — has 109 rooms, including 17 bathrooms, three kitchens and a bowling alley. A lawyer said the foreclosure of Holyfield’s estate could actually be good news for his client (a mother, seeking child support) noting that an earlier trial uncovered evidence that the boxer had paid a $17,000 electric bill the previous December, largely because of an elaborate light display at the home. Holyfield, the only four-time heavyweight champion, has at least nine children.

TRG Motorsports to run reduced schedule: TRG Motorsports officials have announced that its NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team will run a reduced schedule with driver J.R. Fitzpatrick the rest of the season. Fitzpatrick, of Cambridge, Canada, finished fourth in the Truck series season opener at Daytona and was 17th in points after the first four races. “The economy has hindered our program, and unless we can get funding to run the whole season, I will be doing a handful of races for the remainder of the year,” Fitzpatrick said. “We had an excellent start at Daytona and really opened some eyes in the series. We have a lot of great things in the works, and I will be back soon. We are just being more selective of which markets we race in. I am only 20 years old and plan on being in NASCAR for a very long time, so as much as I would like to be at the track every week, it has to make sense for everybody involved.” TRG Motorsports team principal Kevin Buckler said Fitzpatrick or another driver would return.(SceneDaily.com)(4-16-2009)

Trail Motorsport had hoped to field a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series entry for Austin for the 2009 season (as well as a Nationwide Series car for a to-be-named driver), but after two races in enlisting MRD Motorsports to field a truck for the team and Austin, the organization has missed the last two events while regrouping and getting its own trucks prepared. Austin said the Trail team believes it can get a truck ready for him to race at Kansas Speedway, the site of the Truck series’ next scheduled event. Clint Cram, whose experience includes working at Dale Earnhardt Inc., will be his crew chief. Austin admits that he doesn’t know how much momentum he will bring from the start of the season since his earlier trucks were prepared by MRD Motorsports. Trail just finalized plans to go to Kansas a couple of days ago and will have to spend several long days at the shop to get a truck ready, Austin said.(SceneDaily.com)(4-16-2009)

Following this Sunday’s (April 19) Carolina 200 at Rockingham the ARCA RE/MAX Series will steer straight for Talladega Superspeedway where the 48th ARCA RE/MAX 250 goes off Friday, April 24, LIVE on SPEED at 5:00 PM ET.
This year’s Talladega event, the longest race on the series schedule, is full of flavor from series veteran Frank Kimmel, Bill Baird, Mark Thompson and Patrick Sheltra to a wide variety of well-financed series rookies all hoping to leave their Talladega mark.
Among the rookies entered is this year’s Daytona winner James Buescher of Plano, Texas. Buescher, who is the defending Talladega polesitter, hopes to redeem himself in this year’s race after falling out with transmission troubles last year at Talladega. Buescher drives for three-time ASA champion Kevin Cywinski.
Penske Development driver Parker Kligerman, currently leading the Rookie of the Year standings, is also entered in a Cunningham Motorsports Dodge. Kligerman has made just four career ARCA RE/MAX Series starts and has not yet finished out of the top-10. The 18-year-old Westport, Connecticut high school senior is coming off a career-best third place finish at Salem a couple weeks ago.
Eddie Sharp Racing, who fielded cars for Scott Speed and Michael McDowell, has four teams entered, three of which have rookies driving. Those rookies include Greenville, North Carolina’s Craig Goess, New York, New York’s Tim George, Jr. and Fort Frances, Ontario’s Steve Arpin. George finished eighth at Daytona. The remaining seat in the ESR stable is occupied by Westmorland, California’s Justin Lofton, who competed fulltime on the tour in 2008. Lofton currently leads in championship points.
Joey Coulter is yet another up and coming rookie to be reckoned with. Although his finishes don’t show it, Coulter ran up front at both Daytona and Salem before bad luck stepped in. Coulter, also 18, is from Miami Springs, Florida and is crew chiefed by NASCAR veteran Harold Holly.
Other rookies entered include Westlake, Louisiana’s Mikey Kile in a Brad Keselowski-owned Chevrolet, Fairhope, Alabama’s Grant Enfinger in the Great Clips Ford and Humble, Texas’s Stephan McCurley in the American Screen-Porter Glass-Royal Purple Chevrolet.
Practice for the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM local Central time Thursday, April 23 followed by Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell at 5:05 PM. The 48th ARCA RE/MAX 250 is scheduled to roll off just after 4:00 PM local time Friday afternoon, April 24. The race is LIVE on SPEED at 5:00 PM Eastern.

James Buescher, originally entered in the no. 32 Win-Tron Racing Dodge for the ARCA RE/MAX 250 at Talladega Superspeedway on April 24, will not be driving the car, according to Win-Tron co-owner Nate Thiesse.
“James will be participating in a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race that same weekend, so it’s very doubtful that he’ll be able to drive our Win-Tron Dodge at Talladega,” said Thiesse. “Our car is still entered for Talladega, but we’re not quite sure yet who the driver will be.”

ESR to Rock the “Rock”; Car Owner Sharp Reflects
ROCKINGHAM NC (4-17-09) – Eddie Sharp Racing heads to Rockingham Speedway this weekend for the Carolina 200 looking to capitalize on the momentum from a very strong appearance at the Salem Speedway. Although three of the four ESR teams will be making their career debuts at the ‘Rock’ this weekend, team owner Eddie Sharp is old friends with the legendary track. In February 1993, Sharp made his first NASCAR Nationwide Series start in the Goodwrench 200.

Some Thoughts On The Lug Nut Problems
I’ve gotten quite a few emails and have had several “Ask The Insiders” questions over the last few weeks regarding all the issues surrounding the lug nut problems and the new stud length. I’m sure I will continue to get more emails and questions, but I thought I’d dedicate a post to it anyway
