Mark Martin quickly arrives at a fork in the road
ThatsRacin.com Opinion | David Poole What will Mark Martin do?
Two races into a new season, Martin finds himself first in the Nextel Cup standings. But he’s scheduled to run only 23 races, giving the No. 01 Chevrolet over to rookie Regan Smith in the others, beginning with the March25 Food City 500 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. http://www.thatsracin.com/108/story/3232.html

Harvick mirrors ‘Intimidator’ role
Takes Earnhardt’s place in many ways
By LARRY WOODY Staff Writer March 4, 2007
When Kevin Harvick walked into a makeshift media tent in Rockingham, N.C., on a cold, blustery Friday morning in February 2001, it was a time of mixed emotions for the young California racer. Harvick was introduced as the new driver for Richard Childress Racing. At 25 years old, he had landed one of the plum rides in NASCAR.

#17 Team Penalties Upheld by Commission:
On March 5, 2007, the National Stock Car Racing Commission heard and considered the appeal of Roush Fenway Racing regarding the No. 17 car. The appeal concerned three penalties issued by NASCAR following post-qualifying inspection on February 11, 2007 for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series event at Daytona International Speedway. The infractions concerned Section 12-4-A of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing”; Section 12-4-Q “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the car, car parts, components, and/or equipment used in the Event do not conform to NASCAR rules” and Section 20-2.1E “Unapproved aerodynamic modification.”
The penalties assessed were:
Loss of 50 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Championship Car Owner Points for car owner Jack Roush.
Loss of 50 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Championship Driver Points for driver Matt Kenseth.
$50,000.00 fine; suspension from NASCAR for the next four (4) NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Championship Events; suspension from NASCAR until March 21, 2007 (not including testing) for crew chief Robbie Reiser. The Appellants did not contest the legality of the violations, nor appeal the suspensions, but appealed the severity of the fine and the points penalties. The Appellants presented an argument that a “ratcheting up” of penalties was not warranted in light of the recent record of penalties, and that lesser penalties had been previously issued to other teams for more egregious violations. In deciding the Appeal, the Commission considered several factors:
Roush Fenway Racing does not have a history of multiple rules violations.
These infractions were premeditated and intentional. They constituted serious violations.
In the judgment of the Commission, the penalties assessed are severe by the standards of a year or more ago. However, Commission members were advised that NASCAR executives had announced to contestants at a driver briefing in mid-2006 that the previous “benchmark” penalty standards for many serious violations would likely be increased going forward. Subsequent to that, two 50-point penalties were assessed during the 2006 season. Therefore, by a majority vote, it is the decision of the National Stock Car Racing Commission to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR. The Appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Commissioner. (NASCAR PR courtesy Heather M.)

Dale Jr./DEI find what caused engine problem: Quotes from #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr. about starting the season with two Did-Not-Finish (DNF) results: “We’re not happy about it, but we’re keeping our heads up. We’ve had some rough starts before and came back strong. We were 38th in the points after two races in 2003, and we came back to finish third. It seems like we always get better as the year goes on. Don’t forget, we had back-to-back last-place finishes in the middle of the summer last year and dropped out of the top-10 in points, but we fought back into the Chase when we needed to. As a team, you can’t let it be a distraction – we have to go out and run every lap as hard as possible and not worry about it. This team has always performed well when the pressure is on, and I expect nothing less this week. We found out what caused the engine failure at California, and our guys have been busting their (butts) to make sure we don’t have that problem again. The most positive thing we took from California is that we had a car that was really fast. We had a flat tire, but then we came back out and passed Matt Kenseth even with a loose wheel that caused a bad vibration. That shows we have a really good set-up and we’re taking that same chassis to Las Vegas.”(Budweiser Racing PR)(3-5-2007)
Jeff Gordon to run military scheme at Coke 600: Memorial Day Weekend is always thrilling for race fans at Lowe’s Motor Speedway [Coca-Cola 600]. This year, a special celebration of America’s military personnel takes place with the American Heroes Program! In honor of the American Heroes Program, #24-Jeff Gordon and DuPont have created a commemorative paint scheme featuring the Department of Defense. Gordon’s #24-Chevy includes shades of blue with the Department of Defense seal dominating the hood, see an image of the scheme on my #24 Team Schemes page.(3-5-2007)

Sonics, NASCAR bills miss deadline, survive: Measures to build a new arena for the Seattle Sonics and a NASCAR race track in the state didn’t make it past a legislative deadline, but supporters said the projects are very much alive. Monday was the deadline for House and Senate budget committees to report out bills that have fiscal impact, but nothing with a price tag is ever really dead while the Legislature is in town. The race track proposal, put forward by Florida-based International Speedway Corp., calls for taxpayers to pay for about half of a $368 million track. The company wants to put the track in Kitsap County, but the bill isn’t site-specific. The House Finance Committee chairman, Rep. Ross Hunter, D-Medina, said lawmakers had presumed the sports facilities would be considered after the committee deadline. Members need more time to “pencil out” the details of the proposals, he said.(Seattle Times/AP)(3-6-2007)

Don’t be surprised if some NASCAR team owner decides to take part or all of his organization public. The spending in NASCAR will have to stop at some point. If manufacture spending starts to be reduced, teams simply can not ask sponsors for much more.

Waltrip and teammate Dale Jarrett visited Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. for a one-day test
After a rocky start to the NASCAR Nextel season, Michael Waltrip went back to his home state of Kentucky and took his racecar with him.
Waltrip did not return to the Commonwealth to give up on the season, but rather to do some fine tuning to his car.
Waltrip and teammate Dale Jarrett visited Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. for a one-day test on March 2nd.
After failing to qualify for the Auto Parts 500 in California, Waltrip needed the time to relax and do a little work on his car.
“It’s crazy how little time you get during a race weekend to learn and how much you try to squeeze into that little bit of time.” Waltrip said Friday. “Now, we’re able to relax and really, really tear apart the car, run, talk about it, analyze it and make it change. It’s a good way to learn systems and processes.
Waltrip and his new Toyota team have struggled this season. The average finish for his team is 32nd after two races.
Waltrip isn’t deterred by the early struggles.
“It’s not time to panic yet, it almost is. We’re going to make a few subtle changes and ramp up everything we do,” Waltrip said. “Hopefully, we’ll show some steady improvement.”
Waltrip and his Toyota team will attempt to qualify March 9 for the next race at the Las Vegas Speedway.

Denny Hamlin made a promise to crew chief David Rogers that might result in Hamlin running more Busch Series races. Hamlin did not plan to run the full season, but that could change. “I’m pretty much stuck on not running the full season,” said Hamlin, who drove full time in both the Nextel Cup and Busch Series last year. “But I kind of made a deal with my crew chief that if I was leading the points come Atlanta, that maybe I would consider it.” Three races into the season and with one race remaining before Atlanta, Hamlin trails Carl Edwards by 40 points in the Busch Series standings. During the off season, the young racer got married, moved to Nashville and since then has been enjoying life with his new family. Willie Allen Hopes His Racing is a Hit
The name sounds like he should be carrying a guitar up and down Music Row in Nashville. But, the only thing Willie Allen is going to be carrying is a helmet – and hopefully some trophies one day soon. Allen, 26, is making a Rookie of the Year bid in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this year. Driving the No. 13 ThorSport Chevrolet, this Nashville native hopes the backing he’s received leading up to this point will turn into a big hit on the track. Not the kind of hit that makes fabricators and owners groan, but the kind of hit good friends Wendell Mobley and Ted Greene are used to dealing with. Mobley is a country songwriter who has penned hits for Rascal Flats (“I Melt”) and Kenny Chesney (“How Forever Feels”). He met Allen when they were both running around the local tracks in Nashville.
