GM Head Steps Down
George Richard “Rick” Wagoner Jr. is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors. Wagoner resigned as Chairman and CEO at General Motors on March 29, 2009, at the request of the White House. During Wagoner’s tenure as CEO of General Motors, the market capitalization of GM has gone down by more than 90%. In April 2005 Wagoner took back personal control of GM’s North American car division in light of its poor performance. In early June 2005 Wagoner announced that GM in the United States would close several plants and shed 25,000 employees (17% of GM’s U.S. workforce) by 2008. The cuts will result in GM production reducing output by one million cars and trucks (from 6 million to 5 million). In 2008 Wagoner came under renewed pressure as GM sought financial support from the U.S. government in an attempt to avoid bankruptcy. Under Wagoner’s leadership, GM suffered more than $73 billion in losses.

Harvick set at RCR Thru 2010: #29-Kevin Harvick says rumors of his imminent free agency are greatly exaggerated. Although mentioned recently as a driver up for grabs after this season, “I have another year on my contract after this year [with Richard Childress Racing], so I’m not in the middle of all that stuff this year,” Harvick said. “So you can go ahead and check my name off that list. We have an extension in my contract that we signed about a year and a half ago. It goes through 2010.”(ESPN Insider)(3-31-2009)

Martinsville Overnight TV Ratings: NASCAR on Fox charted a 4.1/9 on Sunday for the race from Martinsville Speedway. That matches last weekend’s Bristol rating, but it’s down -16% compared to last year’s 4.9/10 for the Martinsville race. Early tune-in, while down -10% (3.8/9 vs. 4.2/10), was a little better than in recent weeks. The race rating grew by +35% from start-to-finish, which is a normal in-race build. The Martinsville race faced formidable competition from both the NCAA Tournament (5.9/13 early, 7.7/15 late) and the Bay Hill Invitational (4.9/10), which was won by Tiger Woods. Season-to-date, NASCAR On FOX is averaging a 5.3/11 in the overnights, -15% off last year’s pace (6.2/12). For each race, see my 2009 TV Ratings page.(3-30-2009)

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Rain KO’d Friday qualifying at Martinsville, so Cup leader Jeff Gordon was awarded the pole. Sunday, Michael Waltrip brought out the first yellow with a spin. Due to the loss of practice Saturday because of rain, NASCAR went with a competition yellow on lap 40. Scott Speed led on the restart but was quickly overtaken by Gordon’s Chevrolet. Kyle Busch then got loose trying to pass Speed and they had contact. Matt Kenseth was black-flagged because a tire got loose in his pits. A flat tire caused Robby Gordon to spin, the first of several problems he had in an unsponsored Toyota. Denny Hamlin finally got around Jeff Gordon on lap 157. Busch got into the wall when a tire went flat. Carl Edwards had to pit under green with a flat tire after contact with David Reutimann. Hamlin commanded throughout the middle of the event. When Jeremy Mayfield got into the wall and created a yellow, the leaders pitted, and Jimmie Johnson got out first. There was another quick yellow when Aric Almirola spun. On a restart with 45 laps left, Hamlin dived under Johnson in turn one. There were two more cautions when Reutimann spun and Bobby Labonte and Martin Truex Jr. tangled. The green waved with 23 laps to go. Johnson then made his move on Hamlin. He averaged 75.938 mph with 12 yellows for 66 laps. Dale Earnhardt Jr. recovered from early problems to finish eighth. Hamlin led the most laps, 296.

Richmond International Raceway worked out a special contest with radio station DC101 for a Capital Beltway “race,” pitting Busch against DC101 personality Flounder. The challenge was to leave from the DC101 studio and be the first to navigate the Capital Beltway and return to the point of origin. The winner would receive bragging rights and a trophy measuring in at about four feet. Kyle Busch gained an early advantage by maneuvering through heavy rush-hour traffic and avoiding a soon-to-be-merging carpool lane. Several professional driving moves and some tight lane changes put Busch ahead by a sizeable margin. Read more and check out the video link(RIR) (03-30-09)

Cook needs backing to get to Kansas: #25-Terry Cook is still hoping to land at least enough sponsorship to get to Kansas. His HT Motorsports group only committed to field Cook’s Toyota for the season’s first four races if more sponsorship couldn’t be procured. Cook’s truck has been underwritten by team owner Jim Harris’ Lynchburg, Va.-based Harris Trucking Co. so far this season, but the driver doesn’t expect that to continue. “As long as we can keep the momentum of racing well together, hopefully, we’ll continue to race,” Cook said. “We have a lot riding on this weekend whether we put funding together or have a great run to get to Kansas. Even though we’ve got Harris Trucking on the side of the truck, it’s Jim Harris that owns the team and it’s a self-funded team.” Cook is off to a solid start this season. Schrader also tested on the historic half-mile, high-banked southern, Indiana oval last Tuesday in preparation for this Sunday’s 200-lap ARCA short-track race.
“Test went very well,” said Schrader. “We don’t normally get the chance to do that for the ARCA race at Salem, so I’m real excited to see how things will turn out this weekend. We’re ususally flying back from Phoenix (from the Cup race) and have to start at the tail-end.”

USARacing
Monday, March 30, 2009 10:23:00 AM
Concord, NC – March 27, 2009 – With only one week left until the green flag drops at Concord Speedway, the USARacing office is buzzing with excitement. The 2009 season is looking bright with new sponsorship opportunities on the horizon, a solid television package in place with Fox Sports Network (FSN) and a talent-laden crop of rookies and veteran drivers on tap for ’09.

The ‘09 season will be action-packed with the return of four time Series Champion Bobby Gill, two time Champion Clay Rogers, and veteran drivers Jay Fogleman and Jeff Agnew (’98 Champion). NEW PRO CUP OWNERS READY TO SILENCE SKEPTICS
By Lou Lauer, USARfans.com
Saturday, March 28, 2009 11:16:00 AM
The best short track racing series in the country for at least the past 10 years was the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, but with the departure of Hooters as a series sponsor at the end of the 2008 season, the future of the series was a complete mystery. The new owners hope the mystery will be solved with the fast-approaching April 4th opener at Concord Speedway in Concord , NC.
“We’re coming, we’re here, let’s go racing. Don’t wait for the second race, come out for the first. We’re supporting you. You support us just a little bit,” that’s what one of the new owners told us last week.
Barely two months ago, fans, drivers, teams, sponsors, and vendors could see their hopes of racing again under the Pro Cup banner slowly fading away. On January 16, 2009, a group of businessmen finalized a deal to purchase the series from Hooters of America and the lights began to come back on. Suddenly there was hope that this very popular racing series would once again put on great shows, entertain fans, and provide a home for some great racecar drivers. But who was this new group of owners?

They had some NASCAR Canadian Tire series cars you could check out, and best of all was the pit stop challenge! I have to admit; I have done something like this before and thought for sure I would be able to beat the best time – I was …

The Good, Bad, & Ugly – If It Is Success We Reward, Shouldn’t Jimmie Get $20,000,000 Instead Of GM’s CEO?
33-years old. 41 victories in just his eighth full season. 3 Cup championships. I’m starting to get the feeling that being Jimmie Johnson isn’t all BAD

On Pit Road: Stewart-Haas Comes Alive at Martinsville
Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman started the 2009 season with a lot of questions of what the new team could accomplish. While Stewart got off to a good start, coming to Martinsville 7th in points, the 39 team with Newman has struggled, entering Martinsville 27th in the points.

NSCAR needs To wakeup and smell the economy
It is time for NASCAR to wake up! As I sit and watch week after week cars that go unsponsored, I can’t help but wonder if NASCAR is paying attention. With gas prices slowly climbing up, and the stock market in a rapid descent, there is no arguing we are in a poor economy.

Camping World Truck Series Can’t Catch A TV Break
After losing Saturday to rain, the Camping World Truck Series took to the track Monday in front of a small crowd on a chilly day in Martinsville, VA. The good news is that the live SPEED telecast of the race was solid and the trucks put on a great show. The bad news is that almost no one saw it.
