Matt Kenseth took the point for the final time in the NASCAR Busch Series Stater Brothers 300 after a late race restart. As the green flag dropped the Wisconsin native passed Jeff Burton with twenty-two laps remaining of the 150 lap event.
Kenseth held the position and went on to win for the twenty-second time in the series.
Kenseth thanked his pit crew for the performance noting that “these were the best stops we have had in these cars (Busch) in the last year and a half”.
The win, Kenseth’s fourth at the California facility was the first for new crew chief Drew Blickensderfer. Jimmy Fenning, Kenseth’s former crew chief has stepped off the pit box to head up all Busch series operations for Roush Fenway Racing.
Kenseth was followed by Casey Mears, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Greg Biffle.
Last years champion and Daytona winner Kevin Harvick finished sixth.
Pole sitter Dave Blaney finished tenth.
The top sixteen drivers were all from Nextel cup. The highest finishing Busch regular was Timothy Peters who finished seventeenth.
The race saw a record tying eight cautions. There were a total of thirteen lead changes among seven drivers.
Leaving California Kevin Harvick continues to be on top of the leader board for the thirty-sixth consecutive race. He is fifteen markers ahead of Carl Edwards.
Next week the series heads south of the border to Mexico City for the Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200. Denny Hamlin is the defending race winner.
Series notes
Kertus Davis made his series debut for Kevin Harvick Racing in the Dollar General car. Davis started thirty-third and finished thirtieth.
NASCAR Fined crew Chief Bryant Frazler of Wallace racing for a technical violation at Daytona. Frazler was fined $1000.00 for issues regarding a drive shaft bracket.
Veteran road racer PJ Jones will attempt to qualify an RCR Chevy for a one off ride in Mexico City.
