Mark Martin’s Luck Has Got To Change
by: Steve Langley
Mark Martin had a great weekend going for him, in the top with practice speeds, winning the pole, and running up front during most of the race. Then, the unexpected happened, hurtling his car into turn one at the Atlanta Motor Speedway during the Kobalt Tools 500 race, his car took a slide into the outside retaining wall that left his car crippled from the damage sustained when he backed his car hard into it at top speed. Dale Jr. Upset With Team
Dale Jr., frustrated about a loose left rear wheel, got it fixed but then felt a vibration again. He told his team that the same thing happened a few years ago here and he hit the wall _ hard. He said if the thing broke and he crashed he would whack all his crewmembers with a hammer. Later, he chided crew chief Tony Eury Jr. by saying maybe he needed to taser Eury. So what gives? Dale Jr: “I would never say anything determined to hurt them or upset them. Part of it is trying to fire me up. Part of it is trying to fire them up. Part of it is just trying to tell everybody I’m still in the game.
Crewman Suspended In Tire Incident
Jimmy Watts, a gasman for Marcos Ambrose, ran across pit road and into the infield grass to retrieve a tire that got away from the team during the pit stop. He didn’t realize he was in such danger until he was out there. Then again, his regular job is as a firefighter in Charlotte, N.C., NASCAR immediately suspended him for the rest of the race and met with him afterward. More penalties could be forthcoming.
Robby Gordon Dakar Announcement
Team Gordon Offroad, which is responsible for Robby Gordon’s Dakar efforts, announced today plans to run a third Hummer in the 2010 Dakar Rally. Eliseo Salazar, a Chilean former Formula One, IndyCar and sports car driver, is scheduled to be the driver of the team’s third Hummer entry. Team Gordon Offroad just completed a challenging two weeks participating in the 2009 Dakar Rally throughout Argentina and Chile. It was the team’s fourth and most successful Dakar attempt since its inception in 2006. Gordon finished third overall behind Giniel De Villiers, the 31st Dakar Rally car class winner. Gordon’s teammate, Eric Vigouroux drove his identical Hummer to a 13th place finish.
Kvapil Sponsor Continues
Travis Kvapil still needs sponsorship to keep racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series beyond the upcoming race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Yates Racing co-owner Max Jones said Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Kvapil, who finished 23rd in the points in 2008, was left without a full-time ride when Hall of Fame Racing brought Bobby Labonte and sponsor Ask.com to Yates and Paul Menard brought his family sponsorship (Menards) to the team. Points swaps among the group left Kvapil without a locked-in position in races this season. Yates Racing had pledged to run at least five races with Kvapil and then reevaluate. “Right now it’s still five,” Jones said. “We’re still talking to people. Hopefully it can be more, but we don’t have any firm commitments for more than five right now.”
Overnight Ratings Down
NASCAR on Fox notched a 4.7/10 yesterday for the Kobalt Tools 500 from Atlanta, easily the top sports rating of the weekend. Thanks in part to much tougher college basketball competition from CBS, yesterday’s 4.7/10 is down -16% compared to last year’s 5.6/12. This year’s Atlanta race rating matches 2007′s 4.7/10, but note that the 2007 rating came against second-round NCAA Tournament games on CBS. Metered market ratings have been a relatively weak indicator of NASCAR’s national ratings this season. Through last weekend’s Las Vegas race, FOX’s national ratings have been an average of +6% better year-to-year than the overnight ratings comparisons. Every FOX race to date has compared more favorably to last year in the nationals than in the overnights. Through four points races, NASCAR On FOX is down -13% for the year in the metered markets (5.9/11 vs. 6.8/13).(Jayski)…

CALE YARBOROUGH ADDED TO LINEUP FOR SATURDAY NIGHT SPECIAL;
CONFLICT FORCES ALL-TIME BMS WINNER DARRELL WALTRIP TO WITHDRAW
BRISTOL, Tenn. (Monday, March 9, 2009) – Cale Yarborough, one of the most successful drivers in the history of Bristol Motor Speedway, has been added to the lineup of stars for the Scotts “Saturday Night Special” at Bristol Motor Speedway, March 21.
Yarborough won nine times in only 29 career appearances at BMS, including eight times in 12 races from 1973 through 1978. Of the 10,878 laps he completed on the high banks, Yarborough led 4,305 or 39.57 percent. In March of 1973, Yarborough led all 500 laps of the Southeastern 500 and followed four years later by leading 495 in the 1977 spring race.
“Cale Yarborough is one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history and his performances at Bristol are legendary,” said Jeff Byrd, president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. “We’re tickled to have him as part of this event.”
Darrell Waltrip, Bristol’s all-time winner with 12, has had to pull out of the race because of a scheduling issue that has arisen.
“It seems crazy, but I am busier now than I was when I was a driver,” Waltrip said. “I have some commitments to Fox Sports that have come up since we began talking with the folks at Bristol about this race. I was looking forward to getting out there with some of those guys again; and some of them for the first time. After years with Junior Johnson as my boss, I was excited about rubbing fenders with him. But, sometimes things are unavoidable.”
A $100,000 purse to be paid to the charity of choice by each driver will be up for grabs. Competing in late model stock cars, $25,000 will be donated to the charity of choice of the winning team as well as taking home that big Bristol trophy. The second-place team will have $10,000 given to the charity of its choice and $5,000 will go to the designated charity of the other entrants.
Other drivers expected to compete are Harry Gant, David Green, Jack Ingram, Junior Johnson, Terry Labonte, Sterling Marlin, L.D. Ottinger, Phil Parsons, David Pearson, Jimmy Spencer and Rusty Wallace.
The Saturday Night Special will take place after the completion of the Scotts Turf Builder 300 Nationwide Series race and will be followed by a 100-lap UARA late model event.
Tickets, which include all three races, start at $45 and are available by calling the BMS ticket office at 423-989-6900 or by visiting www.bristoltix.com

Officials of Wentzville, MO-based USfidelis, Inc. and Rusty Wallace Racing, LLC (RWR) announce that USfidelis, through its USfidelis brand of extended vehicle service coverage, will serve as primary sponsor of RWR’s No. 66 Chevrolet Impala SS, with driver Steve Wallace, in 25 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series events. USfidelis’s 25-race program began with the February season opener at Daytona International Speedway. The company’s 25 races complement a previously-announced ten-race commitment for the No. 66 from 5-Hour Energy and completes the 2009 primary sponsorship for the younger Wallace and the No. 66 team. RWR’s No. 62 Chevrolet Impala SS, driven by Brendan Gaughan, will be sponsored for a number of races in 2009 by South Point Hotel and Casino. The team plans to announce the full sponsor lineup for the No. 62 shortly. Stated RWR team owner and former NASCAR champion, Rusty Wallace, “We’re all very excited about having USfidelis on board to complete the 2009 schedule for Steve and the No. 66 team. NATIONAL STOCK CAR RACING COMMISSION STATEMENT:
On March 9, 2009, the National Stock Car Racing Commission heard and considered the appeal of RAB Racing regarding the #09 NASCAR Nationwide Series car. The appeal concerned three penalties issued by NASCAR stemming from opening day inspection on February 10, 2009 for the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Daytona International Speedway.
The infractions concerned Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing”; Section 12-4-I “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the Race Equipment used in the Event does not conform to NASCAR rules”, and Section 20A-18.A.: “Roll bars must be made from round magnetic steel seamless tubing 1-3/4 inches by 0.090 inch minimum wall thickness meeting ASTM A-519 specification. Once constructed and installed, the roll cage must be acceptable to NASCAR Officials: Main roll bar #1 was not round; was altered for clearance.”
The penalties assessed were:
-A loss of 100 NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship Car Owner Points for owner, Jay Robinson
-A loss of 100 NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship Driver Points for driver, John Wes Townley
-A $15,000 fine and probation until December 31, 2009 for crew chief Blake Bainbridge.
The Appellants argued that the modifications to the roll cage did not violate NASCAR rules in that the tubing was originally round.
The Appellants argued that the modifications did not represent an intentional effort on their part to circumvent the rules, rather that the chassis had been purchased from a third party and had been modified at some time in the past to allow for bodywork clearance. They further pointed out that no effort had been made on their part to conceal the modifications during the inspection process. They also argued that the penalty was excessive in light of these circumstances.
The Commission found the Appellants’ explanation of the sequence of events regarding the modifications to the roll bar to be both plausible and believable. Ultimately, however, the team presenting the car for inspection is responsible for that car’s adherence to the rules.
Since the modifications may have affected the integrity of the roll cage, an excessive penalty was warranted in this case.
Therefore, it is the unanimous decision of the National Stock Car Racing Commission to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR.
The Appellants have the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Commissioner.

Waddell Wilson

The Incredible Revolving Drivers
You know the ones I’m talking about. The guys who, despite a lack of any spectacular on track performance, continue to find quality rides. More specifically I am talking about the Reed Sorensons and Casey Mears’ of the world.
Casey Mears joined Richard Childress Racing this season after stints at both Hendrick Motorsports and Chip Ganassi Racing. In the previous six seasons and 216 starts Mears collected one win, 12 top-5s, 42 top-10s and three poles. So far this season Mears has one top-15 finish and not much else.
Let me remind you that just last season (literally a couple of months ago) with this exact same team, Clint Bowyer won a race, scored seven top-5s and 17 top-10s. He ultimately finished the season 12th in the points; one of three Childress cars to do make the Chase in 2008.
