Kyle Busch Adds Iowa Race
Kyle Busch, the winner of the recent NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will race at Iowa Speedway. Busch, who has won nine of 39 Cup Races since moving to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008, is scheduled to compete in Newton Sunday, May 17, in the NASCAR Camping World Series East/West Challenge. The NASCAR Camping World Series East/West Challenge has drawn large crowds to Iowa Speedway in its first two seasons. In fact, the race is increasingly popular with NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers since the last two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers – Kevin Harvick and Kasey Kahne – each won the million dollar NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Challenge in Charlotte the night before competing at Iowa Speedway. The word is out: if you want to win a million dollars in Charlotte, race in Iowa the next day.

Atlanta Goodyear Tire Notes
This will be the first time that NASCAR Sprint Cup teams will be running this particular set-up of left- and right-side tires — this set-up came out of a tire test with Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Sam Hornish and Scott Speed at Atlanta in January — compared to the tire recommendation at Atlanta last fall, Goodyear has made construction changes on both sides of the car for improved handling — the other change is to the left-side compound, which is softer for improved grip — the right-side compound is the same one used last fall, after already having been softened after the spring race at Atlanta — as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Atlanta — air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

New Baby For Lamars
Braun Racing’s Burney Lamar and wife, supermodel Niki Taylor, welcomed daughter Ciel Taylor Lamar to their family yesterday at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 4th. Weighing in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces, Ciel is the first child for the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver and the third for Taylor, who is mom to twin 14-year old sons, Jake and Hunter. The Braun Racing and Dollar General families wish to extend their congratulations!

RCM / No Fear Pushes Back Debut, Plans to run Infineon: This weekend was supposed to be the debut of Sprint Cup’s newest team, the #60 Ford for RCM / No Fear Racing driven by Boris Said. But a change in philosophy has pushed back the debut of the organization until Infineon in June. “I learned an important lesson in this sport that I should have known as a new owner,” said RCM / No Fear CEO Rick Clark. “My enthusiasm to debut the team is a lesson in patience that I should have learned playing college football and in the NFL. I would much rather make mistakes before we get to the track as opposed to on the track, and I don’t want to put Boris in a situation that we were not ready for. So, the decision was made, as much as I was eager, to debut the team at a track where we’re capable of contending for the win. I know there will be speculation as to why we didn’t run, but rather than burn up money I’d rather burn up rubber when the time is right. I’ve been waiting for five years, and I sure as heck can wait three more months to take a chance at Victory Lane.“ Clark said announcements on specific sponsors and programs will be forthcoming for the June event. Said has attempted only one race in 2009 to date, failing to qualify for the Daytona 500 after wrecking out of his Gatorade Duel. Following Infineon, the team still plans to run a limited schedule of races in 2009 before plans to move up to full-time competition in 2010.(Frontstretch)(3-6-2009)

Marine to visit Labonte’s Pit at Atlanta: #96-Bobby Labonte will have a special guest this Sunday during the Kobalt Tools 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Labonte will host Sergeant Justin Hussey of the United States Marine Corps. Hussey, currently stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in New River, NC, has already made two tours overseas for both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Hussey will meet Labonte on the starting grid prior to Sunday’s event. “You never want to take our military for granted,” said Labonte. “If there is a way to recognize the people who are sacrificing for our country, I think it’s important to help. If we’re making a special day for Justin, that’s pretty cool. He has already done a lot for me.”(Breaking Limits PR)(3-6-2009)

AMS Offering Free Cancer Screenings This Weekend: The Georgia Chapter of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance will be conducting free cancer screenings this weekend from 9:00am to 1:00pm Saturday [March 7] in the vendor area of Atlanta Motor Speedway. Lori Hamilton, widow of the late driver Bobby Hamilton, has urged fans to take advantage of the free screenings. Hamilton passed away of head and neck cancer complications in January 2007. “It is my honor to continue this effort in his name because we’ve made so much progress with past years’ screenings,” said Mrs. Hamilton. “Bobby would want us to press forward to reach more people with our message. The screening is quick, painless and free, so we are encouraging everyone to take advantage of this opportunity that could save your life.” People interested in more details about the free screening can contact Edie R. Hapner, PhD CCC-SLP, at (404) 686-7798.(3-6-2009)

Kevin Harvick’s modern era streak of completing 81 races in a row ended at California, but Harvick tells PRN’s Garagepass it didn’t have to happen. Harvick said, “The bad thing about the DNF streak is that the car was actually functional to go back on the racetrack. I thought the motor had blown up…I hit the fence and the oil was running across the racetrack and the oil streak all the way up to the wall…I thought the car had blown up. So, I left and the spotter left and they called and said hey we’re ready to go back out with about 15 laps to go…and (chuckles) I wasn’t there…that’s the way it ended. The DNF streak is great but in the end it would be nice to have a win streak.”(PRN’s Garage Pass Radio Show)(3-5-2009)

Lincoln Electric And NASCAR Extend Relationship: Lincoln Electric and NASCAR announced a five-year extension of their agreement in which Lincoln Electric remains an exclusive automotive partner under the NASCAR Performance brand and retains its competition contingency sponsorship which includes the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009. Lincoln Electric became the exclusive NASCAR Performance sponsor of welders and welding helmets in 2000 and held contingency award programs in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. In 2009, Lincoln Electric will add contingency sponsorships in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with weekly prize money provided to eligible teams based on finish position. Lincoln Electric will also continue their programs in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. In addition, a year-end award of $5,000 and a Lincoln Welder will be presented to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion car owner during the season ending banquet.(NASCAR PR)(3-5-2009)

Toyota to go back to old oil pump on engines: Toyota Racing Development has reverted to the oil pump used on last year’s engine and will continue the modifications used in last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas when its teams compete this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Michael Waltrip Racing [#00,#47,#55], Red Bull Racing [#82,#83] and Robby Gordon [#7] Motorsports use TRD engines. In the last two weeks, TRD has had to replace six engines during the race weekend – two at Auto Club Speedway in southern California and four at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The problem was a lifter or camshaft issue. TRD President Lee White said in a phone interview Wednesday that he believes the problems occur when there is no oil pressure as drivers are entering and exiting the garages during practice. White said the oil pump used last year is better for those situations. The new engine pieces Toyota were using at California and Las Vegas were introduced at Texas last November with no problems for intermediate tracks last year. They consist of a very aggressive camshaft that uses a very lightweight lubricant. They are now using a different lubricant, White said. The data that helped the team locate the potential low-RPM issue came from a test session last year.(SceneDaily)(3-5-2009)

GM may not survive bankruptcy, would face liquidation
There is “substantial doubt” about the ability of General Motors (GM) to stay afloat, the firm’s auditors have said. Ongoing losses and the struggle to generate cashflow meant the firm’s ability to continue as a going concern should be questioned, they added. Last week GM posted a $30.9bn (£21.9bn) loss for 2008 and warned that 2009 was [...]

It seems Kyle Busch is doing all he can to ensure victory in the Sprint All-Star Challenge May 16 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. The trick in accomplishing that feat the last two years has been to be entered into the Camping World East/West Challenge the next day at Iowa Speedway. And Busch’s entry is in. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will compete in the annual combination event May 17 at Newton, Iowa for the Camping World East and Camping World West Series’.

Nationwide Mutual Insurance, in partnership with local Nationwide Insurance agent Carlo White announced this week that it will sponsor NASCAR Whelen All-American Series driver, Michael Cherry. The promising 19-year old driver has been chosen to represent Nationwide Insurance in conjunction with NASCAR’s “Drive for Diversity” initiative, which is further diversifying the sport by providing opportunities to minority and female competitors.

Ballew charged with DUI at AMS: NASCAR team owner Billy Ballew was arrested for driving drunk at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Wednesday night. Ballew confirmed the arrest during a telephone interview Thursday. “There’s a lot of circumstances I don’t want to go into right now,” Ballew said. “I am 100 percent sure that it will be dropped.” Henry County police said a county sheriff’s department sergeant arrested Ballew at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday night. Ballew was booked into the county jail on a DUI charge and later released. Ballew said he was driving a sponsor from his condominium to the passenger’s motor home when “an irate cop” wearing a cap marked “security” stopped him. The condo and the mobile home, said Ballew, are both on racetrack property. Ballew said he refused to take a breathalyzer test, but acknowledged that he was carrying a mixed drink in the car when he was pulled over. “It was only one drink. I was not drunk,” Ballew said. “I was on Atlanta Motor Speedway property. I was not on the highway.” The NASCAR [Camping World] Truck Series team owner has enlisted an all-star lineup of drivers over the years. The list includes Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Geoffrey Bodine, John Andretti and Kyle Busch.(Atlanta Journal Constitution)(3-5-2009)

GEICO announced this morning that they will be adding Martinsville to the schedule. This will bring their Truck Series program with Max Papis to seven races, and allow him to hit the track a week before attempting his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in Texas on April 5th. GEICO will also lend a hand to Todd Bodine again this weekend in Atlanta, just as they did in Fontana on February 21st when Bodine finished second in the San Bernardino County 200. GEICO will appear on the rear quarter panels of Bodine’s #30 Germain Racing Toyota Tundra. While Papis’s schedule continues to increase, Bodine’s is headed the other direction. Bodine, the 2006 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion, is sponsorless and unless a sponsor is found, Atlanta could be his final race.(Germain Racing/Player Mgmt. PR)(3-5-2009)

Veteran Gerhart Solid Over the Seasons – 22 & Counting; Featured Guest on ’30 at 30′ Friday

TOLEDO OH (3-5/6-09) – So many drivers have come and gone over the years in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. While some utilize the diverse touring series as a stepping stone, others choose to build careers here.

One of those ‘others’ is Lebanon, Pennsylvania veteran Bobby Gerhart, who’s been burning up and down the ARCA pike for 22 consecutive seasons. Some were full-time seasons; others were part-time. However, over the long haul, Gerhart’s been a driving fixture in The ARCA Nation longer than any other active driver who buckles up on any given raceday.

“State” of the Series

Over the years, 500+ drivers have raced in the Pro Cup Series. I got to wondering where they all came from and did a little research and came up with this table!

They’ve come from 31 different states, two foreign countries, and 1 unknown place. I was surprised to see that 12 drivers from Canada had raced at least one race, but it was not a great shock that North Carolina led them all with 147 different drivers taking a green flag.

If anyone knows where Eddie Sharpe, current age 44, who raced one race in 1997 in the #64 car at Lakeland, was born – drop me a comment so I can get rid of the pesky blank space next to his bio on www.ProCupDigest.com
