Shane Wilson Crew Chief Of Race
Shane Wilson, crew chief of the No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevy driven by Clint Bowyer has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in Sunday’s Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wilson’s best call of the day came when the caution flag came out on lap 258 of the 285-lap event. Wilson instructed his driver to stay out on the track in an effort to stretch his fuel mileage and gain track position as the rest of the leaders came to pit road for fuel. The daring move in the final laps of the race put Bowyer in the lead, where he remained until Kyle Busch passed him on lap 269. Bowyer, who battled back from a lap down earlier in the race, went on to finish second.
Engine Problems Unrelated
The president of Toyota Racing Development says the engine failures incurred by the three Roush Fenway Racing teams during Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway were unrelated to the problems five Toyota teams experienced on Saturday. “Not in any way related,” Lee White said on Monday. “We’re going to take 100 percent responsibility for maybe not having all of our ducks in a row with durability testing when we got to the racetrack to be ready for the decisions the teams put the engines through to get ready for qualifying.” Four teams supplied engines by TRD — David Reutimann and Marcos Ambrose of Michael Waltrip Racing and Brian Vickers and Scott Speed of Red Bull Racing — had to switch engines and start at the rear of the field. Pole-sitter and eventual race winner Kyle Busch also started at the back of the field after switching engines, but his was built by Joe Gibbs Racing.

NASCAR Fans Return to 1988 on ESPN Classic
North Wilkesboro (NC) Speedway was one of the core tracks of NASCAR’s top series for many decades, and NASCAR fans have an opportunity to travel back in time and see highlights of a race from the famous 0.625-mile track when ESPN Classic shows the 1988 First Union 400 from North Wilkesboro on Monday, March 9, at 3 p.m. ET. North Wilkesboro was the home track for legendary NASCAR champion Junior Johnson, who started his driving career there and later was a multi-time champion team owner. With future ESPN analyst Tim Brewer calling the shots in the pits as crew chief, Terry Labonte drove to victory in the race in Johnson’s car after a race-long battle with Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd.

Reese’s colors for Harvick at Atlanta: Reese’s, a major associate sponsor of RCR’s #29 Chevy, kicks into high gear this weekend in Atlanta as Kevin Harvick and the #29 team transform their bright yellow-and-red Shell-Pennzoil Chevy into a bright orange Reese’s racing machine for the Kobalt Tools 500. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are peanut butter-filled chocolate cups. AMS was the site of Harvick’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series win. He claimed the win by .006 second over Jeff Gordon, the third-closest margin of victory at Atlanta, on March 11, 2001. Geoff Bodine goes from catch can to cockpit for Atlanta race: Geoff Bodine did such a good job last week in Las Vegas being the catch can man for brother Todd; he got a promotion. This week, the 59-year young Bodine will go from catching gas to standing on it in the #64 Toyota for Gunselman Motorsports. On a normal team, that would be a huge move going from crew member to driver. But, when you’re doing business the way the Gunselman Gang is this year in Sprint Cup Series competition; it’s just another day at the track. It also helps when you’re a Daytona 500 champion, winner of 18 Sprint Cup races and one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers like Bodine. Being a three-time pole winner and qualifying record holder at the 1.5-mile trioval is an added bonus. After making their first race of 2009 last weekend, the Gunselman Gang was running 28th when a broken valve spring ended their race 28 laps show of the finish. The pit crew consisted of Bodine as the catch can, owner Larry Gunselman as the jackman and crew chief Doug Richert as the front tire changer. Bodine was already the announced co-driver when the season started, but when he insisted on helping out in way possible, Gunselman took him up on the offer. So, Bodine donned the firesuit and safety gear to catch gas on pit stops last week. The week, he’ll be back behind the wheel of the unsponsored #64 Toyota attempting to make his 38th career AMS start. “Well, I guess I’ll have to look for a catch can man when we make the race this week,” said Gunselman.(Gunselman Motorsports PR)(3-4-2009)
Mears car blue at Atlanta: Casey Mears’ #07 Chevy will feature a blue and white DIRECTV paint scheme this weekend in Atlanta. DIRECTV, the nation’s leading satellite television service provider, presents the finest television experience available to more than 17.3 million customers in the United States and is leading the HD revolution with more than 130 HD channels. Jack Daniel’s, the team’s customary primary sponsor, will be featured on the car’s lower-rear quarter panels and deck lid.(RCR PR)(3-4-2009)
Las Vegas Final TV Ratings: NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing on FOX once again dominated weekend sports coverage. Sunday’s (3/1) race from Las Vegas Motor Speedway scored as the most-watched and highest-rated weekend sports event giving NASCAR on FOX that distinction for the third consecutive week. Sunday’s victory by hometown favorite Kyle Busch averaged 11.1 million viewers (6.5/12 national rating/share) towering over the next closest event, ABC’s Lakers/Suns broadcast, which recorded 4.7 million viewers (3.1/6). According to Nielsen Media Research, FOX’s 11.1 million viewers on Sunday is up 5% over the 10.6 million viewers Sprint Cup Racing at LVMS has averaged from 2001 to 2008 on FOX. Sunday’s 6.5/12 equals the average household rating over the same eight-year span [down from 2008 which was 7.1/13 and 12.1 million viewers].(Fox PR)
#96 Hall of Fame Racing goes green: JuicedHybrid.com, a sponsor in the Sprint Cup Series with Hall of Fame Racing’s #96 car, is joining together with Hall of Fame to further the team’s green initiative. In an effort to offset the #96 team’s carbon footprint, a green associate sponsorship partnership was developed among Hall of Fame Racing, Ask.com, primary sponsor on the #96 car, and JuicedHybrid.com, the leading supplier of auto accessories for hybrid cars and trucks, for the first 18 races of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. The program will measure and offset carbon emissions for the #96 Sprint Cup entry during each practice session, qualifying session, and the race. It will also offset the carbon emissions for the #96 Ask.com transporter and Bobby Labonte’s travel to and from each NASCAR race. Carbon offset is a certificate representing the reduction of one metric ton (2,205 lbs) of carbon dioxide emissions, the principal cause of global warming. The amount of the emissions created during standard racing activities of the #96 Ford Fusion will be offset through investments made by Ask.com and Juicedhybrid.com in clean energy projects such as solar energy and wind farms by purchasing credits though TerraPass. These projects result in verified reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In support of additional efforts to address the environment, NASCAR, the sport’s sanctioning body, is developing an industry-wide green initiative led by Dr. Mike Lynch. The initiative will include the sport’s various stakeholders and will seek to mobilize the NASCAR fan base in this important issue.(Volume PR)(3-3-2009)
Biffle’s Crew Wins Tissot Pit Road Award in Vegas: Greg Biffle’s #16 team claimed the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award at Sunday’s Shelby 427 Sprint Cup event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Biffle’s Ford Fusion spent the least amount of time on pit road — 252.400 seconds — during the 285-lap, 427-mile race. The speedy #16 pit crew has helped lift Biffle to fourth place in the driver point standings. The #16 over-the-wall crew consists of: Todd Zeigler (front-tire changer), Colin Pasi (front-tire carrier), Kyle Power (rear-tire changer), Kevin McDowell (rear-tire carrier), Rodney Fetters (jackman), Billy Manchester (gasman), Ryan Dextraze (catch can) and Chris Elliott (windshield). The team’s crew chief is Greg Erwin and the pit crew coach is Andy Ward. For winning the weekly Tissot Pit Road Precision Award, the #16 team will receive $5,000. The payout for the season-championship pit road team will be $100,000 and a Tissot watch for the driver and members of the over-the-wall crew.(DMF Communications/Tissot PR)(3-3-2009)

Jamie McMurray, Drifting Champion of NASCAR
If you have any doubt that NASCAR’s drivers are among the most talented on Earth, you obviously didn’t see Jamie McMurray’s drift save in the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Bumped in the left rear between turns one and two by Joey Logano on lap 66, McMurray’s rear end slid towards the wall, but [...]

HIGHROAD SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS POPULAR RACING TITLE SILENT THUNDER
Feature Marks First African-American Auto Racing Project Since 1977
Los Angeles, CA – March 3 – Following the recent announcement of HighRoad Entertainment’s addition of a new sports division, HighRoad Sports Entertainment, the company today unveils the first major project to be greenlit – Silent Thunder, adapted from the best-selling self-memoir of America’s first black auto racing team owner, Leonard “Len” W. Miller.
Set in the no holds-barred era of open-wheeled racing, Silent Thunder tells the riveting true story of a man’s daring pursuit of his dreams and the resolve it takes to beat the impossible. Script for the film has already been written by Miller’s son, Leonard T. Miller, and will include open-wheeled, Indy and drag racing action as Len triumphs his way to the Black Athletes Hall of Fame, into which he was inducted in 1976. Miller, famed as a pioneer of the auto racing industry, founded Black American Racers, Inc. (BAR) and Vanguard Racing, Inc. in the early 1970’s. Vanguard Racing went on to become the first African American owned team to be entered into the Indianapolis 500.
Silent Thunder is only the second feature to be made about an African American racer since the 1977 film, Greased Lightning, starring Richard Pryor and based on the true life story of Wendell Scott, Miller’s colleague and friend. HighRoad Entertainment is currently casting and raising financing with the company’s David Salzberg, Christian Tureaud and Johnathan Adair producing. This project marks HighRoad Entertainment’s fourth sports-themed, family-friendly feature and comes on the heels of recent project, The Perfect Game and feature documentaries Running the Sahara and Burton Snowboards For Right or Wrong.
“I’m thrilled to have the privilege of working with my son and HighRoad Sports Entertainment on this project. After having great success with the book, taking the story to the big screen will be another adventure I’m very much looking forward to,” said Len Miller. “I only hope that the story of my life, which has truly been defined by the pursuit of the impossible, inspires people around the world and reminds them that nothing is out of reach.”
“We have been looking for a multi-dimensional sports project like Silent Thunder for some time now. Once Johnathan Adair brought the script to us, it was instantly obvious that this had to be a feature we produced,” said DS/CT, Partner at HighRoad Entertainment. “The story has a classic richness that I’m confident will reach audiences in a truly unique way.”
Holding true to the company’s mission to provide inspirational content that resonates with an audience, the HighRoad Sports Entertainment division will continue to source individuals and sports teams for content that delivers positive and inspirational messaging. Parent company, HighRoad Entertainment, recently optioned Angel of Oxnard, a story of faith, tortillas and a home shopping network, with Cheech Marin attached to direct and star. The feature documentary, “Running the Sahara”, is also currently airing on the Showtime network following a limited theatrical release. The film, which follows three men in their attempt to become the first humans to run coast to coast across the Sahara Desert, is narrated and Executive Produced by Academy Award Winner Matt Damon and directed by Academy Award Winner James Moll. The film already has raised millions of dollars in support of charity, H2O Africa (http://www.h2oafrica.org/).

Mark McArdle, vice president and director of competition for Richard Petty Motorsports:
USE OF THE NEW R6 ENGINE: “We are using the R5P7 right now while the R6P8 engine is still in development with us. We look at it as a risk/reward issue and right now, we think it is a little bit risky considering the situation we are in with our teams. We like what we have right now. We are making decent performance numbers with the new engine and trying to develop a level of reliability in to it that we have in the R5. It’s our position that in the first third of this racing season we can’t afford the risk of giving away any points so we are going to be very conservative in what we do.”
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NEW AND OLD ENGINE: “Fundamentally the architecture of the engine changes by dimensions it becomes a much tighter box of dimensional conformance per NASCAR. They have given all of the manufacturers a set of parameters to design an engine around. It’s going to make all of the engines very close in their ultimate performance potential. Strictly speaking, in our case, we probably have the least amount of change between the two (new and old engine packages.) Our rules package we designed to back in 1999 and 2000 allowed at that time for us to take advantage of some things that are now considered standard.”
PLANS TO RACE NEW ENGINE IN 2009: “We are keeping our options open with regard to our utilization of the R6P8. When we deem it wise to race it, we will. It’s likely you will see us compete with it at some point this season, but to what level of commitment we haven’t decided.”

Scott Speed won the pole for Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by turning a lap at 182.451 mph — good enough for the track record. He became the ninth driver in Nationwide history to earn the pole in his first start. And now the bad news: Speed had nowhere to go when Kyle Busch’s No. 18 car spun directly in front of him on lap 21 of the Sam’s Town 300. Scott Speed, driver, No. 99 Red Bull Toyota: “It was a good time out there. At least we were running in the front and running well. What can you do? It’s just the wrong place at the wrong time — kind of the story of my year so far. Nonetheless, I’m certainly excited to get back into the next race with this team and with everything we have because we have good stuff. I think we’re going to have a good year in this thing.(RBR) (03-03-09)

Just who are Timothy Peters, T.J. Bell, Chad McCumbee and J.R. Fitzpatrick and how many of them will finish the year as dramatically as they’ve started?

SPEED Lets Fans in on the Action with NASCAR Smarts
02-27-2009 | Erik Arneson, SPEED
“Coming into 2009, we felt very comfortable with our lineup of at-track interview shows and wanted to find a fun way to get the audience more involved in what we do at the track each week,” said Steve Craddock, SPEED SVP of Programming. “We knew it was a bit of a gamble – we didn’t have the show graphics until just before we went on air in Daytona — but everyone is having a lot of fun with it and the fans really appreciate being included.”

TOLEDO OH (3-3/4-09) – The ARCA RE/MAX Series has, without question, become one of the premier development series en route to the bigger leagues.

Now enter Craig Goess, one of three ARCA RE/MAX Series rookies in 2009 working through the ESR ranks.
