Is that burnt toast I smell? Never mind, it’s Joey Logano.

One driver that may be in trouble is the Joe Gibbs #20 car of Joey Logano. He had a rough Daytona race that ended with him finishing 43rd after being involved in an accident. California was a little better when he started the race 34th and finished in the 26th position. More at http://motorsportsnews.net/archives/3036

Las Vegas NASCAR Notebook
There have been 11 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Five drivers have participated in all 11 races: Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte and Mark Martin.
Dale Jarrett won the inaugural pole at Las Vegas (Feb. 27, 1998).
Eight drivers have poles, led by Dale Jarrett, Kasey Kahne and Bobby Labonte (two each).
Seven different drivers have won, led by Jimmie Johnson (three).
Only four of the 11 races have been won from a top-10 starting position and none have been won from the pole.
Four of the 11 races have been won from a starting position outside the top 20.
The deepest in the field that a race winner has started was 25th, by Matt Kenseth in 2004.
There has been one green-white-checkered finish at Las Vegas: 2006 (270/267).
Qualifying has never been canceled at Las Vegas.
Matt Kenseth has a 9.0 average finish in nine Las Vegas races, the best of any driver with more than three starts. He has been running at the finish in all nine of those races and has finished on the lead lap in eight. Kenseth has also led 438 laps at Las Vegas – 179 more than any other driver.
Roush Fenway Racing had five drivers finish in the top 10 in the inaugural Las Vegas 400 in 1998. In five of the 11 races, the winner at Las Vegas was driving for Roush at the time: Mark Martin (1998), Jeff Burton (1999 and 2000) and Matt Kenseth (2003 and 2004).
Bodine Uncle Dies
The racing community is grieving the loss of Maynard Bodine, who built race engines for three generations of Bodines. The last of the five sons of Chemung Speedrome founder Eli Bodine Sr. died Tuesday at age 75 after a brief illness. Several members of the Bodine family from Chemung went on to make their mark racing stock cars, including Maynard’s brother Earl at the Speedrome, and his nephews Geoff, Brett and Todd Bodine in NASCAR. Maynard also tried his hand behind the wheel in the 1950s but soon realized others, like his brother, were faster…

Golden Corral back to sponsor the #28: Golden Corral, America’s favorite family buffet and grill restaurant chain, is extending its NASCAR involvement and has signed on to sponsor Yates Racing driver #28-Travis Kvapil for the next three Sprint Cup Series races [Las Vegas, Atlanta and Bristol in March]. It will also continue its “Race for America’s Families” promotion. Each time Kvapil posts a top 10 finish, Golden Corral will give every kid in America a free buffet* as well as make a $5,000 donation to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). “Golden Corral was thrilled to sponsor Travis in the Daytona 500 and our customers, employees and veterans across the country told us they were pulling for him, too,” said Chris Kuehn, chief marketing officer of Golden Corral. “We decided to extend our sponsorship because the response reinforced that this is a perfect fit for our brand and the start of the season is a great time of year to be involved in NASCAR.”(Chainleader.com), see images of the car on my #28 Team Schemes.(2-27-2009) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2009/28cup.htm

What’s Up with Ward Burton? Ward Burton would like to see every youngster get the same opportunities that he had. And the 2002 Daytona 500 winner is not talking about winning NASCAR races. Rather Burton is concerned that many of the youth of today do not know what it is like to enjoy outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. In 1996, he founded the nonprofit Ward Burton Wildlife Foundation, an organization aimed at providing outdoors opportunities to the future hunters and fishermen. Burton, who made an appearance recently at the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, is working through the school system in his native Virginia, something that may take more work to accomplish in Pennsylvania, where most school districts have done away with the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s hunter education programs. Recalling a recent outing with a seventh grade class from a Virginia middle school, Burton said, “You would not believe the percentage of kids who had never been fishing, or never had seen a beaver swamp or didn’t recognize a raccoon track on a bank, just simple common things.” He said he is concerned about the loss of the rural culture which, he said, is responsible for today’s young people having what he called “nature deficit disorder.” He said, “They don’t understand the things that we take for granted because of the way that we were brought up.”(see the full article at the Daily Item)(2-23-2009)

Girl Who Gave Earnhardt “Lucky Penny” to appear at Bristol: Wessa Miller, the girl who gave Dale Earnhardt Sr. her lucky penny prior to his winning the Daytona 500 in 1998, will return to Bristol Motor Speedway, a place where Earnhardt later brought the family to thank them for their special gift. Thanks to the efforts of the NASCAR Angels television program and working with The NASCAR Foundation, Motor Racing Outreach and The Pennies For Wessa Fund, the Miller family will make its return visit. Wessa Miller, now 16-years-old and still residing in Phyllis, Ky., was six years old on February 15, 1998 when her dream to meet NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. came true through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During their meeting, Wessa gave Earnhardt her lucky penny. That weekend, with the coin glued to the dash of his car, Dale Earnhardt Sr. won the Daytona 500 on his 20th attempt. That April, Earnhardt arranged to have Wessa and her family attend the NASCAR race in Bristol, Tenn. During their visit, Earnhardt presented the Millers with a new van to help with their transportation needs. Eleven years later, the Millers still drive that same van, which transports the family to and from regular doctor visits in Lexington, Ky., 175 miles from Phyllis. The NASCAR Angels television program has arranged to bring Wessa Miller and her family to Bristol Motor Speedway on March 21 to film her as part of a ‘Heart of NASCAR’ segment to be featured in an upcoming episode.
In conjunction with this event, The NASCAR Foundation has partnered with NASCAR Angels and Motor Racing Outreach (MRO) to launch an online auction that will raise funds for the MRO Benevolence Fund, a fund that supports causes like Pennies for Wessa. The auction will feature a variety of items including autographed memorabilia from numerous NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers, including Dale Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch and more, exclusive VIP experiences at upcoming races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule and items from the Dale Earnhardt Foundation, Richard Childress Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing and NASCAR Performance. The Pennies For Wessa Fund was started by NASCAR beat writer and SIRIUS XM radio host David Poole in an effort to assist the needs of the Miller family [see his article at Charlotte Observer]. To learn more or to bid on items to support this auction, visit foundation.nascar.com. Fans can donate directly to the Pennies For Wessa Fund by visiting www.penniesforwessa.org.(NASCAR PR)(2-27-2009)
Kenseth goes for a record: #17-Matt Kenseth won the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. He became just the fourth driver to win the Daytona 500 AND then the next race of the season:
Richard Petty, (1973) Daytona & Richmond, 23rd at Rockingham in 3rd race
Cale Yarborough, (1977) Daytona & Richmond, 6th at Rockingham
Jeff Gordon (1997), Daytona & Rockingham, 4th at Richmond
Also Kenseth is the fifth driver to win the first two races of the season
Marvin Panch (1957), Lancaster & Concord, 3rd at Titusville
Bob Welborn (1959), Fayetteville & Daytona Qual Race [points race then], 41st Daytona 500, started from pole
David Pearson (1976), Riverside & Daytona 500, 29th at Rockingham
Jeff Gordon (1997), Daytona & Rockingham, 4th at Richmond
no driver has won the first three races of the season and no driver has won the next two races after the Daytona 500. The last driver to win three races in a row was Jimmie Johnson in 2007 when he won four in a row at Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas, Phoenix late in the season and during the Chase.
SPONSORS? and no driver has won three straight races at all in the modern ear [1972-present, many teams didn't have sponsors like they do now before then] with three DIFFERENT sponsors: DeWalt at Daytona, Carhartt at Auto Club and USG at Las Vegas. Red Bank Outfitters to stay with #36 team thru Vegas: After receiving a large amount of media exposure during the Daytona 500 and Auto Club 500, Red Bank Outfitters has decided to continue its sponsorship of Tommy Baldwin Racing through the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. TBR finished 25th as an underdog in the Daytona 500 and crossed the finish line 36th last weekend after a mechanical failure ended a strong run during the Auto Club 500. Scott Riggs and the #36 Toyota is currently 32nd in the 2009 Sprint Cup point standings. “I am extremely happy that Red Bank Outfitters has decided to continue its sponsorship of TBR,” said Tommy Baldwin, owner and crew chief of the #36 entry. “I think it shows how impressed they have been by the amount of exposure they have received over the past couple of weeks.”(TBR/Everest Marketing Group PR)(2-26-2009)
Racing at North Wilkesboro? A developer has signed a short-term lease with the owner of North Wilkesboro Speedway and has plans to start a new racing series and reality show there. Charles Collins, who says that he is a 43-year-old Georgia native and developer, has set up an office at the speedway and has keys for the locks. During a tour yesterday, Collins said he has a short-term lease with Bruton Smith, the billionaire owner of the speedway. “Yes, sir, I believe he does,” Smith said in a telephone interview. Smith said he didn’t know details of Collins’ plans, but that the lease is for about three months. The speedway is still for sale for $12 million to “whoever comes with the money first,” Smith said. Collins says he plans to produce a reality racing show there called Women So U Think U Can Race? He also said he plans to start a racing series for women called the AWESOME Racing Series. AWESOME stands for for All Women Stockcar Oval Motorsports Event. “We’re seeking women that want to go bumper to bumper,” he said. Collins said he hopes to start production of the show at the speedway in March or April and to have ticketed events for the public. He also plans to promote concerts there, he said. Burned in the past by people who have announced pie-in-the-sky plans to buy and revitalize the North Wilkesboro Speedway but never did, officials in Wilkes County don’t know quite what to make of the latest prospect.
Collins, who said he has been working on the project for the past year and has been in town for about four months, wouldn’t say exactly where he had come from. He wouldn’t answer specific questions about his past experience but said that he is a property developer who has built houses and had done some shopping-center renovations. He talked about needing sponsors for the new efforts. He said he hopes to eventually buy the speedway. In a 2002 interview, Smith said that the track is worn out and needs to be repaved, and that there are sewer problems there. Yesterday, Smith said that for what Collins is going to do right now, those improvements won’t be necessary. Collins said that the track is still in good shape. He said that the sewer is fine, and they can use portable toilets until eventually bringing in a main sewer line. “I got big plans for this place, and that’s about as far as I’m going to go,” Collins said. “We’re getting ready to crank this place up.”(Winston Salem Journal and Wilkes County News) and see a response by the Save The Speedway site and see past info on the track at my North Wilkesboro Track News page.(2-26-2009)
