NEW CAR ELIMINATES CROSS-COUNTRY TRIPS
LAS VEGAS — The new Car of Tomorrow proved to be as versatile as NASCAR promised.
Since creativity has been restricted to defined rules, the car that raced at last week’s race in Southern California can be used again in Sunday’s Shelby 427 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
That means the massive haulers that move equipment around the country stayed out west this week.

An Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry will be fielded by Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in the 200-lap event. That is not odd, considering JGR has had a relationship with Interstate Batteries dating back to the team’s first season in 1992. What is odd is that instead of the No. 18 adorning the hood, door panels and rear of the Interstate Batteries machine, the No. 20 will be used when JGR veteran Denny Hamlin attempts to score his first Nationwide Series win at the 1.5-mile track.
KB3 brought the No. 23 Aaron’s Lucky Dog Dream Machine back to the garage in one piece registering a 20th-place finish. Everyone on the R3 Motorsports team was pleased with the 26-year old driver’s series debut; except the driver. In addition to his driving debut, KB3 also made his TV commercial debut for Aaron’s. The fan favorite series of commercials have featured his dad, Ken Butler – COO of Aaron’s, in the past along with Aaron’s-sponsored drivers Michael Waltrip and David Reutiman.WHO’S BEEN MOST HELPFUL TO YOU: “It’s more like who hasn’t been helpful. Rob Fuller has been giving me driving advice because he’s worked with me in Late Models and knows my driving style. His uncle, Jeff Fuller, is a former modified ace who has driven in all three NASCAR series. Slugger Labbe (Daytona 500-winning crew chief) comes by and gives me advice, too. It’s great to have people like that you can go to for advice. Trust me; I’m taking it all in, too.”
Scott Wimmer for Key Motorsports-ON MISSING THE RACE IN CALIFORNIA – “We had a really good car in practice, we just had some issues in qualifying and slowed down. We were 21st and looking really good going into qualifying, but we just had something go wrong. That was disappointing.” ON RACING AT VEGAS AFTER SIX YEARS – “I’m looking forward to getting back there after a disappointing weekend in California. I’ve actually tested out there the past few years so I’ve been around the track since it’s been repaved and the banking added. I’ve had a little bit of time on it, and hopefully that can translate. It’s a good car, the same car we ran in California. It drove really well before qualifying and hopefully it’ll run as good in Vegas as it did there.”
Vickers On Returning to Las Vegas Motor Speedway “Last year we just had rotten luck. We qualified on the pole and had a fast car during the race. Unfortunately, we fell victim to a blown tire that sent me into the outside wall. The impact caused too much damage to the Dollar General Toyota to return to the race. I like this track a lot and am anxious to get back there to finish what we started. We tested there last year and ran well, so I feel like we have a big advantage coming back with those notes and the same group of guys. We gave Dollar General their first pole position here in 2008, now it’s time to give them their first win of the season.”Vickers opted to stay out west this week following the weekend at Auto Club Speedway. BV passed the time checking out Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen and sky diving with the Red Bull Air Force in California. Then it is off to Vegas where he plans to rock some of the Night Life and enjoy GREAT food!
David Ragan will compete in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series events this weekend. Ragan has two previous Nationwide starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway; his best finish was 10th in the spring of 2008. Ragan will be signing autographs at Discount Tire (6565 E. Lake Mead Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89156), February 26th from 4-6 PM. (RFR) (02-25-09)
