My column, “Dear Brian…” got almost 1,000 hits during its first week. When Pipe Smoke came on the scene as an independent site, the first 1,000 hits took over a year.
Honk if you remember seeing Tim Richmond drive in a demo derby.
I miss the sound of an unmuffled small block in the morning.
That sound after a heavy bout with the bottle resulted in more than one instant hangover.
At one time I smuggled beer into the grandstands at Thompson Speedway. An old jacket with ripped out pockets would hold a six pack. the statute of limitations ran out on that one long ago. Besides, I think that the Honeig family has forgiven me for that one.
I got the chance to walk onto the track at Dover many years ago. Talk about a trip!
One of the most beautiful sights is watching the morning fog lift from a short track in the summer.
Know why they are racing in Las Vegas this week? Because it is 10 degrees F here in New England.
I ran my engine out of oil and blew up my trusty Chev Cavalier. 203k for 10G. I call that good value
for a car that grossed over $225,000 in a 4 1/2 yr career.
On Facebook, I have several friends in the Media, some I have known for many years. As a result I get the names of lots of folks including Cup drivers that I can add to my friends list. I refuse to add them. I know none of the current crop personally. I have met Joe Nemechek, but that was years ago at Oxford Plains. I have been to autograph sessions with several drivers who are retired, but I count none of them as friends.
Seems like all of the NASCAR series are seen as developemental today. Years ago it was not that way. Guys like the late Richie Evans and Jerry Cook made a good living in the modifieds. Sam Ard, and many others made their mark in the LMS. Still others like Fred De Sarro Jr and Bugs Stevens had real jobs or a business to run. What happens to drivers who do not develop today?
Favorite families of motorsports, the Bodines of Chemung N.Y. the Bouchards of Fitchburg Ma. and the Fullers of Auburn Ma.
Of all the deaths from years ago, I miss Alan Kulwicki the most. The originator of the Polish victory lap.
My favorite short track announcer of all time, the late Wally Saleeba of Seekonk Speedway. Any Girl Watchers reading this column? Russ Dowd of Thompson is a close second.
I have never been to a race of any kind at NHIS.
We are getting a new track in Western Ma. Sports cars and no spectators will be going to the Palmer Motorsports Park.
That wraps up another lap. Stay tuned to this space for more insanity. Till next time. John
