NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon among those to participate in

NASCAR President Mike Helton and four-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon will be among the NASCAR personalities who field questions from race fans next week in Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s first Fast Chats program. There is no charge for race fans to attend Fast Chats as the lively question-and-answer sessions will take place on the LVMS midway, outside the entry gates. Others who will be “on the hot seat” for a 20-minute session include Las Vegas natives Kurt and Kyle Busch.
Earnhardt stuck in tangled web
sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3928381&name=newton_david
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Clicking on Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s official Web site. A solid black page comes up. Clicking again. Another blank black page. Maybe it’s my computer. Maybe it’s a glitch in the system. Maybe Earnhardt’s Web site has befallen the same fate as its driver and crashed. Two races into the Sprint Cup season NASCAR’s most popular driver is 35th in points. It’s not the worse start in his 10-year career, but it’s close. In 2007, he crashed and finished 32nd in the opener at Daytona, followed by a 40th at California due to engine problems. This year, he caused a big crash and finished 27th at Daytona and was 39th at California due to engine problems It’s not an impossible hole to climb out of. In ‘07, he rallied with four straight finishes of 14th or better to move to 11th in points. But he never captured the consistency it took to get into the top 10, and he finished 16th in the final standings. In 2003, before the 10-race Chase format, he started 35th and 33rd. He turned that into the best point total of his career, finishing third behind Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. But this start feels different. It’s not so much the poor finishes, because Earnhardt had cars capable of finishing in the top 10 in both races. He may have been good enough to win at Daytona. It’s the negative vibes that surrounded the finishes. Earnhardt made two rookie-like mistakes on pit road to put him a lap down at Daytona, and then was vilified by many of his faithful fans after causing the 10-car wreck that took out many of the top cars.
Hopelessly Devoted: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Changes His Tune
And Gets The Love Treatment From Fox
blogs.courant.com/autoracing/2009/02/hopelessly-devoted-dale-earnha.html
Pre-game shows are hardly the place to go searching for hard hitting interviews, but Fox took sugar sweet, over the top adoration, to a new level prior to Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. Fox sent Darrell Waltrip to sit down with Dale Earnhardt Jr. for an interview that ran as part of Sunday’s pre-race show. Earnhardt’s wrecking of Brian Vickers, and consequently many of the frontrunners in last week’s Daytona 500, was the talk of the week on all fronts of NASCAR media in the days after the race. But it came as no surprise to see Fox send the grandfatherly Waltrip to chat with Earnhardt about the aftermath of his miserable day in Daytona. Waltrip has never shied away from being an unabashed Junior apologist, something he showed in the booth in the immediate aftermath of Earnhardt’s wreck at Daytona, and he did nothing to turn off the adoring compassion in tenderly walking Earnhardt through his interview. And the syrupy love only got ramped up back in the booth after the taped interview was televised.
Passing The Test: Tony Stewart Pleased With His New Bunch Two Races Into The Season
blogs.courant.com/autoracing/2009/02/passing-the-test-tony-stewart.html
After 10 seasons competing for one of the most potent organizations in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history, the were many wondering going into the 2009 season if Tony Stewart could remain a contender in the division as a team owner/driver with Stewart-Haas Racing. It’s a question that will take some time to be answered, but the early results have been all positive for the 2-time Sprint Cup Series champion. Stewart backed up his eighth place finish in the Daytona 500, the first points event for his new team, with another eighth place Sunday in the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Overnight Rating 5.3
Fox’s broadcast of Sunday’s Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway in California earned a 5.3 overnight Nielsen Media Research rating and an 8 share in the nation’s largest television markets, Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports. Last year’s first race at California was postponed because of rain and run on Monday, so direct comparisons are not available, but the rating is 14.5 percent lower than the 6.2 Fox earned overnight for the track’s first race of the season in 2007.
Attendance Figures Just OK
NASCAR didn’t fill every seat at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday, but it filled enough to make track president Gillian Zucker happy. NASCAR estimated race attendance at 78,000 while one of the local papers estimated it at 55,000. Prior to the race, Zucker said she would have considered being 10 percent off the 2008 Labor Day weekend attendance (which NASCAR estimated at 70,000) a success because of the rains that suspended the event last year and the current economic times. The track’s grandstands seat 92,000. The track appeared to be about two-thirds to three-quarters full at the start of the race. The race lasted 3 hours, 40 minutes – including 37 laps run under caution because of intermittent drizzle – and empty seats became more noticeable throughout the event.
Biffle Disappointed
Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle was castigating himself for a pit-road error that he felt cost him a shot at the win following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Auto Club 500. Biffle was battling for position and trying to gain ground on leader Jeff Gordon and on teammate Matt Kenseth on pit road on lap 209 when he almost overshot his stall. While he did stop inside the line, he had rolled across his air hose and had to back up so the team could complete his pit stop. Biffle fell from second to 12th with the miscue and recovered to finish fourth – but spent the moments immediately following the race wondering about what might have been. “This was a pretty fast car,” he said. “I just screwed it up. Trying to get greedy. You know, it was so hard to pass out here, and I was hoping to beat the 24 [of Jeff Gordon] out and I was trying to give my guys every advantage I could. I stopped in the box, I wasn’t out of the box, but the guy pulled the hose around, and we had this problem before. It’s just me stopping too deep in the box and caught them off guard and ran over the hose. And this box is super-long anyway. But they didn’t do anything wrong; it was my fault.”

Kenseth’s win means 2nd race fan headed to Homestead: Matt Kenseth’s back-to-back season-opening wins in his #17 Ford makes for back-to-back winners in Ford’s “We Race. You Win” national sweepstakes. For the second week in a row, a lucky fan will be notified this week about their trip to Ford Championship Weekend. The sweepstakes, announced January 22, awards one fan every time a Ford NASCAR Sprint Cup driver wins a points race this year. That lucky fan and a guest will win an all-expenses paid trip to Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. During the race weekend, one of those fans then will be selected as the grand prizewinner of a 2010 Ford Fusion. Kenseth’s first career Daytona 500 victory automatically created the contest’s first winner. His win in Fontana enables a second fan to win a trip to Ford Championship Weekend in Homestead, FL (Ford PR). More information about the contest on my Racing Contests page.(2-23-2009) www.jayski.com/pages/contest.htm#ford-fusion
Stewart’s Crew Grabs Tissot Pit Road Win in California: The #14 crew for Tony Stewart took top honors Sunday, winning the Tissot Pit Road Precision Award at the Auto Club 500 Sprint Cup race in Fontana, CA. Stewart’s Old Spice/Office Depot Chevy spent the least amount of time on pit road (260.940 seconds) during the 250 lap, 500-mile race at Auto Club Speedway. The winning pit road performance helped Stewart to an eighth-place finish in the second race of the season. The #14 over-the-wall crew consists of: Jeff “Gooch” Patterson (gasman), Scott Radel (catch can), Mike Casto (jackman), Kelly Kellis (front tire changer), Todd Drakulich (front tire carrier), Daniel Smith (rear tire changer), Mike Morneau (rear tire carrier) and Troy Welty (windshield). The team’s crew chief is Darian Grubb and the pit crew trainer is Joe Piette. The Tissot Pit Road Precision Award pays $5,000 for each Cup race to the winning pit road team. In addition, the team with the most pit road event wins will be awarded a $100,000 bonus at the completion of the 36-race schedule by Tissot, the official watch and timekeeper of NASCAR.(DMF Communications/Tissot PR)(2-24-2009)
Cup race for Kentucky in 2010 remains in doubt: A court schedule released Monday appears to be another blow for Kentucky Speedway’s chances of obtaining a date on the 2010 Sprint Cup calendar because the antitrust lawsuit between the track founders and NASCAR most likely won’t be resolved until at least late May. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on Monday released its oral argument calendar for the week of March 9, and the case was not on the docket. The earliest the Kentucky-NASCAR case can now get on the calendar is the two-week session that begins April 20. It takes at least a month, and typically longer, for the appeals court to render a decision. NASCAR officials have repeatedly said that they would not consider a request from current Kentucky Speedway owner Speedway Motorsports Inc. to realign one of its Cup dates to Kentucky as long as the case is unresolved. That means that unless the speedway founders, who sold the track to SMI in December but retained the rights to the lawsuit, opt to drop the lawsuit, the case won’t be decided until late May at the earliest. NASCAR typically is well into its sanctioning process for the following year by that time. The appeals court could make a decision without a hearing, but it is not expected to do so. “I wouldn’t speculate as to when the court would hear the case, but I can say that a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series date will not be considered while the litigation against NASCAR, ISC, SMI and others remains,” NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said in a statement Monday.(SceneDaily)(2-24-2009)
Special Deals on Indianapolis Tickets: Turn 3 of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is historically the “sweet spot” of action during the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, as some of the race’s most decisive passes and incidents have taken place there. Now, selected backstretch reserved seats will be available at a special value price for the 16th Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Sunday, July 26, offering NASCAR fans great action at a great price. These seats are at the end of the back straightaway entering Turn 3 of the historic 2.5-mile IMS oval. Seats in Sections 41 through 50 of the Northeast Vista Backstretch, including the Northeast Vista Backstretch Platform (wheelchair-accessible seating), will sell for $45 each, a $30 savings. Tickets for the three events in 2009 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – the 93rd Indianapolis 500, 16th Allstate 400 at the Brickyard and second Red Bull Indianapolis GP – can be ordered online at www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com at any time.(IMS PR)(2-24-2009)
Auto Club Speedway happy with turnout: Despite fears that the economic recession, the Academy Awards telecast and other factors might limit attendance to 60,000 or fewer, NASCAR estimated that the race drew about 78,000 people to the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway [seats 92,000] — 8,000 more than it said attended the Fontana race last Labor Day weekend. Auto Club Speedway, like many tracks nationwide, had cut prices on some seats in response to the economic pressure. “The turnout was awesome, I’m so thrilled with the crowd,” said track President Gillian Zucker. “It clearly shows how passionate Southern California is about NASCAR. That even in this kind of an economy that the crowd is that big says an awful lot.”(Los Angeles Times)(2-23-2009)

The Race….for Sponsorship
FONTANA, Calif. — The most important part of Sunday’s Auto Club 500 was not what happened on the track but what took place in the garage, the suites and elsewhere.
Some teams had prospective sponsors at Auto Club Speedway as they look to find additional funding.
Teams looking for sponsors range from Roush Fenway Racing to Richard Petty Motorsports to Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and others.

Engines sour on three Chevy teams
By David Poole
FONTANA, Calif. – Engines were pushed to the limit – and sometimes beyond – Sunday night in the Auto Club 500.
Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin all fell out of the race early with engine woes. Harvick finished 38th with Earnhardt Jr. 39th and Martin 40th.
“The motor blew up and I just got in my own oil going in the corner there,” said Harvick, who had finished second in the season-opening Daytona 500 a week ago. “It just didn’t give me any warning.

A crew member, Paul Chodora, was indefinitely suspended from NASCAR for violating the substance abuse policy. Brian Vickers got the pole Friday at California with a 183.439 mph lap. Sunday, Jimmie Johnson led early until light rain on lap six. That continued until lap 23. There was more rain about 20 laps later. Jeff Gordon passed Matt Kenseth for the lead on lap 196, but Kenseth got it back exiting the pits 12 laps later. He fended off several challenges from Gordon. Kevin Harvick had engine problems and brushed the wall. Hendrick teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin had engine problems. Kenseth averaged 135.839 mph with five yellows for 43 of the 250 laps.

9-Time Champ Frank Kimmel Looking for 10th Title; Featured Guest on ‘30 at 30′ Tuesday, February 24
TOLEDO OH (2-24-09) – In our nation’s worst economy since The Great Depression, Frank Kimmel went from having no sponsor to having a full sponsor. It happened right before Daytona when Ansell and Menards joined forces with the 9-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion for the 2009 season.
How did he do it? A portion of the answer is respectably proprietary; however, other components of the equation are crystal clear. To cut to the chase – it simply means something to be a 9-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion.
