NTSB: NASCAR Decisions Cause Of Crash
The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday that NASCAR didn’t meet its own lofty business standards in its aviation department as the board released its accident report about a NASCAR plane crash that killed three people on the ground as well as the two pilots July 10, 2007, in Sanford, Fla. The NTSB board accepted the investigation report, which said the plane was a “hazard to flight” and there was inconclusive evidence on the source of an in-flight fire. — The board approved the probable cause of the accident as: “The NTSB determines that the probable causes of this accident were actions and decisions by NASCAR racing corporate aviation division’s manager and maintenance personnel to allow the accident airplane to be released for flight with a known and unresolved discrepancy and the accident pilots’ decision to operate the airplane with that known discrepancy, a discrepancy that likely resulted in an in-flight fire.” Among those killed in the crash was Dr. Bruce Kennedy, husband of NASCAR Executive Vice President Lesa France Kennedy.

Wypall Wipers announces 2009 Crew Chief Lineup: Three of the most respected and successful crew chiefs in the history of NASCAR have been named to the 2009 WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief lineup. The all-star line-up of Bob Osborne, Todd Berrier and Jeff Hammond, who have a total of 63 career Sprint Cup Series victories between them, continues the tradition of top-notch crew chiefs who call WYPALL Wipers their wiper of choice. This year’s WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief program, which began in 2004, launches in Daytona on Feb. 15. Osborne is in his second year as a spokesperson for WYPALL Wipers. He is coming off a banner 2008 season after leading the # 99 Roush-Fenway Ford Racing team and driver Carl Edwards to a runner-up finish in the Sprint Cup Series Chase. Berrier, also in his second year as a spokesperson for WYPALL Wipers, helped guide the #29 Richard Childress Racing Chevy team to a fourth-place finish in last year’s title chase with driver Kevin Harvick. The team had seven top-five and 19 top-10 finishes. He has four career victories with Harvick, including a checkered flag in the 2007 “Great American Race,” the Daytona 500. While Hammond no longer calls the shots from high atop a pit box, he still oversees each racetrack from a television booth, analyzing the action for FOX Sports and SPEED Channel. His credentials include 43 wins and two championships as Darrell Waltrip’s crew chief, in addition to being a team member on four other championship teams. He, too, is a part of the WYPALL Wipers team for the second year. The crew chief trio, along with representatives from WYPALL Wipers, will serve as the panel for the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge, a season-long contest that will determine the best crew chiefs in the Sprint Cup garage. Following each Cup race, each member will vote to determine which crew chief demonstrated the most outstanding strategy and ingenuity during the race. It isn’t necessarily the crew chief who goes to Victory Lane, but the crew chief who made the biggest difference to his team. The weekly winning crew chief will receive a $1,000 check as well as signage to announce the win on their pit box at the following week’s event. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead, Fla. Former yearly winners include Tony Eury, Sr. (Dale Earnhardt, Jr.), Robbie Reiser (Matt Kenseth), Doug Richert (Greg Biffle) Mike Ford (Denny Hamlin) and Chad Knaus (Jimmie Johnson).(Wypall PR)(1-30-2009)
Yates Names Business Development Team: Yates Racing announced Jon Sands as Vice-President and Mark Gendle as Director of Business Development for the three-tiered Sprint Cup Series entry to include the #98, #28 and #96 Hall of Fame Ford. The duo will also support the #98 Nationwide Series entry with Paul Menard. Sands joined Roush Fenway Racing in 2001 after excelling in numerous areas of motorsports marketing. Sands experience ranges from Phoenix’s Firebird International Raceway, New York-based Cohn & Wolfe where he oversaw Pennzoil Sprint Cup Series program, and Coors Brewing Company’s Cup Series endeavors. At Roush Fenway Racing, his responsibilities included securing primary sponsorships as well as developing specialized, integrated marketing communication programs that make such sponsorship programs profitable to the client. Gendle joined Roush Fenway’s marketing team after a four-year tenure with Raycom Sports. At Raycom, Gendle developed sales and marketing strategies for regional television coverage of both basketball and football in the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference. His motorsports experience began at Elevation Motorsports where he worked with clients like General Mill, UPS and Masterfoods USA.(Yates Racing PR)(1-30-2009) Comment here
Newman questions timeline of drug testing: Ryan Newman supports NASCAR’s new drug-testing policy for 2009 but says he was surprised that the sanctioning body so clearly defined a designated time frame for the tests. “I might be opening up a can of worms when I say this, but why would you announce you’re going to have a drug-testing time?” Newman said during the Stewart-Haas Racing portion of the Sprint Media Tour hosted by Lowe’s Motor Speedway. “I mean the whole idea of announcing it kind of takes away from the people that know how to cheat the system. Obviously, I know there’s probably going to be some follow-ups with certain people … but it just seems to me that you’re only eliminating the really, really naïve people in the first testing or in the first screening like this.” The sanctioning body issued a memo to teams in December, requiring they submit drug-testing results from all crew members, spotters and race-day support personnel, including engineers, engine tuners, shock specialists, chassis specialists and tire specialists, by Jan. 16. NASCAR was to oversee drug testing for all drivers beginning the week of Jan. 20.(Scene Daily)(1-30-2009)
State of Tennessee, Bristol fight over tax on broadcasts: Bristol Motor Speedway and the state of Tennessee are fighting in court over money the racetrack brings in from the broadcast of NASCAR races. Both sides were in a Nashville courtroom earlier this month trying to negotiate a way forward in the lawsuit that began after the state demanded that the speedway pay taxes on money it makes from televised races at the track. The lawsuit, filed last year in Chancery Court in Nashville, claims the state Department of Revenue is illegally taxing the track. At stake is nearly $420,000 in taxes and interest.(Associated Press / USA Today)(1-30-2009)

At the age of 31, Johnny Borneman is no longer a “hot prospect” in stock car racing. So the second-generation driver from Ramona has switched gears when it comes to racing. “The days of dreams have passed,” Borneman said yesterday. “There are so many young kids coming into NASCAR, and so many young kids with money backing them. It all comes down to who can bring in money.

NASCAR will limit Camping World Truck Series teams to five men over the wall instead of seven and not allow them to fuel and change tires during the same pit stop this season, the sanctioning body has announced. Teams also will not be able to use three different engines in three consecutive events, excluding the races at Daytona and Talladega. After an engine’s initial use, competitors must declare the use of an engine for a future event, and the engine will be sealed by NASCAR. If an engine expires during a race weekend and the team must use a different engine, it must start in the rear of the field, just as in previous seasons. The rule applies to a team’s three consecutive races entered and not just the three consecutive races on the schedule, meaning that if a team skipped races, it would still need to race the same engine in two of any three events it enters. Many teams already had used engines in at least two events before replacing various pieces. In another cost-cutting move, a crew chief must designate a maximum of 12 active crew members for each event. Active crew members include crew chief, driver, spotter and crew members that enter the truck servicing area of pit road during the race.(SceneDaily.com)(1-29-2009)
Wyler Racing teams up with Stacy Compton: Wyler Racing is very excited to announce that veteran Stacy Compton has agreed to drive the #60 Wyler.com Toyota Tundra in the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starting with the season-opening NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, February 13th, 2009. In 2009, the team will focus on going back to their roots of the operation by putting a young driving talent in the hands of an experienced winning crew chief, Richie Wauters. Wauters took over responsibilities of the #51 truck driven by Kyle “Rowdy” Busch in 2007, but this year will trade responsibilities with the other veteran crew chief and former driver, Doug George.(Billy Ballew Motorsports PR)(1-29-2009)

Ansell and Menards to Sponsor Frank Kimmel in ARCA RE/MAX Series
TOLEDO, Ohio (Jan. 29, 2009)–Officials from Ansell Protective Products Inc. and Menards Home Improvement Stores announced today that they will become co-primary sponsors of nine-time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Frank Kimmel in 2009.
“We are pleased to announce a comprehensive, multi-faceted marketing program in conjunction with Menards Home Improvement Stores and ARCA,” said Sean Sweeney, Sr. Market Development Manager for Ansell. “Together, Ansell Gloves and Menards have partnered to sponsor nine-time ARCA Champion Frank Kimmel for the 2009 season.”
The marketing program is anchored by a business-to-business relationship between Ansell, the world’s largest manufacturer of protective gloves and clothing, and Menards, a Midwestern-based chain of home improvement stores. As a result of the sponsorship, the Ansell line of hand protection products will be available for purchase in each of the nation’s 245 Menards Home Improvement Stores.
“This sponsorship program is really neat,” said Kimmel. “It has been designed to promote the availability of Ansell’s safety glove line to the contractor and installer markets at Menards retail locations. The support of Ansell and Menards helps me to continue to pursue my goals of attempting to earn a tenth ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship and hopefully surpass Iggy Katona on the all-time ARCA win list.”
Kimmel is the ARCA RE/MAX Series’ all-time active leader, with records in the categories of championships won, most laps led, superspeedway pole awards, superspeedway challenge championships, top-five finishes, top-ten finishes and career earnings. With 74 career wins, he is just five wins shy of tying Katona’s all-time win record in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
“Menards is very excited to sponsor Frank Kimmel’s run for a tenth ARCA Championship in 2009,” said Jeff Abbott, company spokesperson for Menard, Inc. “We feel his strong work ethic is a good fit with our family-owned, customer service oriented, home town hardware stores.”
Retail offerings at Menards range from lawn and garden supplies to lumber, tools and supplies for landscaping, building and remodeling. The home improvement stores cater to the do-it-yourself consumer and the professional contractor, jobber and installer. Menards is based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and currently has 245 locations in 12 states.
“As business needs evolve, so do our marketing efforts,” said Steve York, Director of Channel Development for Ansell. “The opportunity to partner with ARCA and Menards as well as expand our value proposition into the retail market further promotes our worksite safety initiatives. We are excited to partner with Menards, Frank Kimmel and ARCA.”

Ansell has led the personal protective equipment industry with “Ideas that Fit™” for more than 100 years.
