And here’s quotes from just about my favorite comedy movie…. Groundhog Day!
Phil Conners: When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.
Rita: Have you ever had déjà-vu?
Phil: Didn’t you just ask me that?
Moving right along, here’s some stock car racing news to warm you up.

Lt. Governor Backs Washington Track
Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, a popular Democrat who has made economic development his central issue, says he will champion a $368 million NASCAR racetrack, probably on the Kitsap Peninsula west of Seattle. The price tag has risen $23 million since last year, but the developers have also agreed to pick up a larger share of the total cost and to absorb any cost overruns. Owen said the plan wouldn’t create new taxes for the general public and wouldn’t affect the state’s bond-debt capacity. Backers estimate the project would boost the state economy by nearly $4 billion over 30 years, creating construction jobs for 5,600 people, Owen said.
Budweiser Wins Exposure Battle
Jimmie Johnson won the 2006 NASCAR Nextel Cup championship by finishing first among his peers over the course of a 36-race season. But did his sponsor, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, win the really important battle for exposure? According to Joyce Julius & Associates, they did not. That honor went to Budweiser, sponsor of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and DEI, by more than $40 million, according to the season-ending statistics released by the Michigan-based company. Joyce Julius & Associates watches each of the race telecasts nearly frame-by-frame to determine the winner in its annual exposure derby, which does not include commercials, and Budweiser was the clear victor.
Hall Of Fame Under New Management
Talladega Superspeedway will oversee day-to-day operations of the nearby International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum, Talladega Superspeedway President Grant Lynch announced today. Lynch said the management transition is effective Feb. 1, 2007. A manager will be hired to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Hall of Fame and Museum and will report to Talladega Superspeedway Vice President and General Manager Rick Humphrey, whose present duties will expand to include serving as the Hall of Fame’s executive director.
Benny Parsons Honored
Tuesday evening’s Inaugural North Carolina Motorsports Association (NCMA) banquet honored individuals, businesses and organizations that have significantly contributed to — and have positively impacted — the motorsports industry in the state of North Carolina. Nine achievement awards were presented in seven categories, followed by the NCMA Tribute Award to Benny Parsons. Keith and Kevin Parsons accepted the award in honor of their father’s lifetime achievements and contributions to motorsports.
RCR Driver Development Program
Richard Childress Racing (RCR) will run its 2007 Driver Development Program through the Golden Gate Racing Team (GGRT) with drivers Tim McCreadie and Ryan Foster competing in the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series. GGRT, headed by Jim Offenbach, competed in the NASCAR Grand National Division West Series from 1997 to 1999 with a lineup of drivers that included Mike Skinner, Mike Dillon, Steve Portenga and Jay Sauter. Portenga, who finished fifth in the final standings in 1999 while driving the GGRT entry in the series, will serve as the team’s crew chief this year.

UPDATE: Track testing, COT testing, wind tunnel testing; it’s all over. The month of January had everyone at Petty Enterprises preparing the #45 Wells Fargo/Marathon/Tire Kingdom Dodge and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge for the 2007 racing season. The preparation is complete and both teams are looking forward to the beginning of the season. “The guys are committed to winning in 2007,” said Executive Vice President of Race Operations Robbie Loomis. “We saw good signs in both preseason test sessions (Daytona International Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway) and we are in a good position to really have strong runs the first three races. We have hired new over-the-wall guys to make our pit stops better. We have hired in the engineering department and in the shop. All the guys want to show everyone what we have.” Drivers Kyle Petty and Bobby Labonte both returned from Las Vegas testing knowing that the next time they are on track it counts. “It’s another season for everyone,” said Petty. “We have had the time to make changes and get better. I’ve said that we have better people at Petty Enterprises. We have great guys working on both teams. The ‘45′ car was pretty good in Vegas testing, and we’ve made final changes to the Daytona car. As a driver you dream of the Daytona 500. It’s here and we know what it takes to win it.” Petty Enterprises has 11 wins at the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. Labonte is a former runner-up in the event.
“We’ve been up front at Daytona with this Cheerios car and Vegas was a good learning experience,” said Labonte. “We have done a lot of testing and a lot of preparation for the next few weeks. We have more experience as a team and that is a big positive step for us. The Vegas test was a good chance for us to see that new track configuration and surface. I’m glad we had the chance to get out there and test it before the race. That will help us once we go back. We want to get back to racing after what we did at the end of 2006.”(Petty Racing PR)(2-2-2007)
LMS = Beast of the Southeast: Long recognized as one of the meanest race tracks on the NASCAR schedule, Lowe’s Motor Speedway has emerged a true beast. And capitalizing on that tough reputation, speedway officials have launched a marketing campaign that brands the 1.5-mile quad-oval as “The Beast of the Southeast.” Speedway officials will use The Beast of the Southeast logo and theme in print and electronic advertising; as part of multiple direct-mail campaigns; and on the track’s web site. An extensive line of The Beast of the Southeast souvenirs is also being developed. Tickets for all 2007 events at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, including the May 19 Nextel All-Star Challenge and the May 27 Coca-Cola 600, are now available and can be obtained by calling 1-800-455-FANS or online at www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.(LMS PR)(2-1-2007)

Darrell Waltrip generally likes this season’s re-tooled Chase for the Nextel Cup. But if NASCAR had asked, he would have offered a couple of suggestions. “First, I’d like to see the Chase reduced from 10 races to seven or even five,” said Waltrip. “Ten races is too many for a ‘playoff.’ Also, I’d have a separate points system for the Chase once it got under way.”
– The Tennessean
If the Dodge handles even a tad better than in 2006, watch for Juan Pablo Montoya to rattle a few cages at Daytona next month, providing Chip Ganassi’s NASCAR team a huge boost and proving open-wheel guys can match it with stock-car racing’s finest on ovals.

Kyle Busch said he was “messing around out at the sand dunes” before the Nextel Cup test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and hit his hand on a motor home bumper. Busch said his thumb has been “fine with driving.” His Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet’s speed, however, was another matter. Through Tuesday morning’s session, Busch was only 35th fastest among 56 drivers participating.

Multi-team owner Jack Roush was interviewed and said he and Mark Martin are still great friends and that Martin will run a couple of Busch Series races for Roush in a Ford. There had been rumors and a press release a month ago that Martin would run some Busch races for Roush for the Dish Network.

To be frank, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. didn’t have particularly high expectations of the movie biography of his late father, Dale Earnhardt. The project was a collaboration with Earnhardt’s widow, Teresa, and car owner Richard Childress, who have been extremely reluctant to authorize or endorse Earnhardt projects. But the two people closest to The Intimidator had no qualms about this project.

Erin Crocker’s not done, but she’s definitely scaling back and might even change teams, team owner Ray Evernham said last week. In an interview last month, John Fernandez, the director of operations at Ganassi Racing, admitted that Scott Lagasse has not been placed in the most competitive situations. Although no one has released a firm schedule for 2007, Fernandez said his plan for Lagasse is to get him into a stable situation and run 12-15 races in the ARCA RE/MAX Series or NASCAR Busch Series. “I’m not going to drive stuff unless it’s good enough to win or at least run in the top 10,” Lagasse said. Lagasse hasn’t won a race since signing with Ganassi and his best finish in a NASCAR race was 18th in a Craftsman Truck Series race, one of 10 starts he made in that series last season. In 2005, Lagasse started five Busch series races, with his best finish 28th. (ARCA Racing) (02-01-07)

She said they have yet to sign a substitute driver for Conz at Daytona. Jeff Fuller and Randy LaJoie both tested the #34 Chevy at Daytona last month.
