Gordon Has DNF In Charity Event
Rubens Barrichello won the first race of a charity karting event in Brazil on Sunday, with Michael Schumacher finishing fourth and Jeff Gordon failing to complete the event after starting in the last row. Barrichello edged Brazilian countrymen Lucas Di Grassi in the first race of the “International Challenge of the Stars”, an event organized by Formula One driver Felipe Massa. Another race will take place later Sunday, with the driver with the most points after the two races being crowned the overall winner. Gordon, a four-time NASCAR champion making his first trip to race in Brazil, struggled after starting in 25th place and failed to complete the race because of mechanical problems.
Irwindale Turkey Night Winners
Fifteen year old Alex Bowman of Tucson, Ariz. led 30 of 40 laps winning the Ford Focus 40-lap feature race during the 68th Running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix at TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale. With the victory Bowman was able to clinch his first ever Ford Focus National Championship. Steven Mathews of New LIskeard, Ontario, Canada finished in second place and Ian Miille of Pleasanton, Calif. finished in third place and clinched the Ford Focus California Pavement Series Championship. In the USAC Western Sprint Car Series 40 lap feature race, Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. took over the lead on the 6th lap from Ryan Kaplan of Chico, Calif. and went on to win the USAC Western Sprint Car Series 40 lap feature race during the 68th Running of the Turkey Night Grand Prix at TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale. Kaplan finished in second place 0.629 seconds behind the winner. Cole Whitt of Alpine, Calif. finished in third place.
Blaney’s Future In Doubt
Dave Blaney knows he’ll be involved in racing in some capacity in 2009, but that’s speaking in general terms. It could be in NASCAR Sprint, Nationwide or Craftsman Trucks series or it could be as overseer of his 14-year-old son’s super late-model short-track activities. Following the last of 36 Sprint Cup races at Homestead Miami Speedway on Nov. 16, the Hartford native reflected on the 2008 season, but, more painfully, gazed into auto racing’s crystal ball. “I’m ready for a break,” said Blaney, who finished 31st in the owners’ points standings. “I’m glad it’s over.”
Edwin ‘Banjo’ Matthews To NC Hall of Fame
Former NASCAR legendary driver Donnie Allison half-kidded that it wouldn’t take the late Edwin “Banjo” Matthews long to get all the kinks ironed out of the premier stock car racing division’s current Car of Tomorrow. “Banjo could get that thing fixed in a matter of hours,” atoned Allison, on the stage as the official presenter of Matthews as the latest recipient of the Snap-On Tools Golden Wrench Award during the course of earlier this fall’s 12th annual N.C. Auto Racing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. “He was a mastermind at what he did.” Matthews is considered by those in the know as one of the founding fathers — particularly what took place in the garage area behind the scenes – of the modern stock car racing scene. His contributions first as a driver and then most notably as a car builder/owner remain unparalleled. The impact he made on the sport is still in place today.

Latest news on Edwards injured USAC driver: From Cameron Dodson.com: “After responding to familiar voices and briefly opening his eyes on multiple occasions over the last 48 hours, we are thrilled to report that Cameron [drives for Carl Edwards' USAC team] regained consciousness this afternoon,” stated Michelle Petroff from Dodson’s representing agency – Rising Star Management Group. “He was able to respond physically to multiple verbal commands and showed the ability to move and sense pain so this is remarkable news just 10 days after his accident. The progress that Cameron has already made defies all odds but is a credit to the medical staff caring for him, support of his family, his determination and personal fortitude. Please continue to send positive wishes and encouraging messages of strength and, again, thank you.” More info at camerondodson.com.(11-30-2008)

Hornish given ‘vote of confidence’: Former Penske Racing open-wheel driver Sam Hornish Jr. has the team’s full support in his second full season of Sprint Cup racing next year. Hornish, a three-time IndyCar Series champion and winner of the 2006 Indy 500, struggled this season in the #77 Dodge Charger in his rookie Cup year, finishing 35th in [DRIVERS, 38th in OWNERS] points and failing to qualify for the final race at Homestead. It was rumored he might even return to IndyCar. But Penske Racing spokesman Bud Denker said Hornish, who will have Mobil 1 and AAA sponsorship on his Dodge in 2009, would play a pivotal part in the Cup campaign with fellow Penske drivers #2-Kurt Busch and #12-David Stremme, who replaces Ryan Newman. “We’re absolutely committed to Sam,” Denker said. “We’re behind him and are blessed to have sponsorship from Mobil and AAA. We are very committed to Sam and expect him to do well.”(Detorit Free Press)(11-28-2008)

Blaney’s career is up in the air…BDR layoffs: Dave Blaney knows he’ll be involved in racing in some capacity in 2009, but that’s speaking in general terms. It could be in NASCAR Sprint, Nationwide or Trucks series or it could be as overseer of his 14-year-old son’s super late-model short-track activities. “I’m glad it’s over.” The uncertainty of his place in NASCAR’s top tier is utmost on his mind. “It’s hard to tell what’s going to happen,” Blaney said of the status of Bill Davis Racing’s No. 22 team, which, following Homestead, laid off most of its employees. “The 22 team is kind of up in the air. It doesn’t have sponsorship for 2009.” If it sounds like the end, that’s understandable, but the door doesn’t appear to have closed completely. Blaney said he’d consider the second-tier Nationwide series or Craftsman [Trucks]. “I’d love to run Nationwide or Trucks with a really competitive team. That would be fun. If not, I’ll will look at racing somewhere else. My son is having fun racing, so I could see myself going with him.” Not only has the #22 team shifted into slow gear, but it’s gone into hibernation. “It’s uncertain if it’ll get a sponsor,” Blaney said. In a media release dated Nov. 14, BDR crew chief and competition director Tommy Baldwin said there will be a full staff preparing for the start of the 2009 season. With his one-year contract with BDR expired, Blaney is officially a free agent. “I’m open for next year. I’d stay with the 22 if I’m asked back or I’d look at any other options, but there aren’t a lot of options out there.”(The Vindicator)(11-28-2008)

Nationwide COT in holding pattern: The Nationwide Series car of tomorrow is in a bit of a holding pattern as the series heads into the offseason, especially after the sanctioning body banned most testing for 2009. The car, originally slated to begin running at the start of the 2010 season, has been officially tested on the track twice, the last being at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in October. Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said manufacturers Chevrolet and Toyota have some more work to do on the noses of their version of the car, and NASCAR officials would likely test their vehicles in the wind tunnel in January. Balash isn’t sure when the car will be tested again on the track, though it does need more work on the engineering and mechanical pieces. “Whether the economics tell us to do something different, that’s going to be a lot of conversation with team owners throughout all of 2009,” Balash said. “Six months ago, we were talking about more testing with the teams, not less. So we’ve got to keep our fingers in the pulse of what’s happening business-wise.” That doesn’t necessarily mean NASCAR could delay the cars debut later than the beginning of the 2010 season.(Scene Daily)(11-30-2008)
Kurzejewski expected to run some races for Keselowski: Matt Kurzejewski has a lot to be thankful for on this holiday. Since the 17-year-old from Mansfield made his professional stock car racing debut last month, his career aspirations have kicked into high gear thanks to Nationwide Series racer Brian Keselowski. The Notre Dame High senior is finalizing a deal that would have him compete in seven Camping World East and West Series events, along with five Nationwide Series races in 2009. The 27-year-old Brian Keselowski has ambitions of running his own team and has handpicked Kurzejewski to drive for him in 2009.(Elmira Star Gazette)(11-29-2008)
Wimmer working on deal for 2009: [Scott Wimmer] was cut loose by Richard Childress Racing after the season. He spoke with some owners this week and would love to drive both Sprint Cup and Nationwide next year. Scott Wimmer: “I talked to a team about running Daytona 500 so hopefully I can make a start down there again and run a Nationwide Car. I might be running both series so it might be a real busy year next year.”(WAOW.com)(11-28-2008)

Cook returning to #59; HT Motorsports entertaining idea of second team: “Going back to the 59 truck really rejuvenated me,” Cook said. “All of a sudden it was fun to go back to the track again. We enjoyed going out there and running up at the front every week. I haven’t been more excited about the start of a new season in a long time and we have high expectations once we get to Daytona and the rest of the 25 race schedule. I truly think with what Jim has in place we can race for wins every week.” HT Motorsports would also entertain the possibility of fielding a second team in 2009 under the right conditions. “We’ve wanted to expand to two trucks for a couple of years but the opportunity hasn’t ever been right,” Harris said. “We’d look at any opportunities right now. Whether it’s a rookie with some sponsorship or it’s forming an alliance of some sort. We have a great race shop and we’re in an area that really welcomes motorsports businesses. We are far enough away from the Charlotte area that we don’t have a lot of the employee turnover that you see down there, but close enough that we have immediate access to all of the latest information and technology. I think we’re in a great position to see some success in 2009 and beyond.”(HT Motorsports PR)(11-26-2008)
Camping World offer to help manufacturers: Camping World becomes title sponsor of NASCAR’s truck series next year, and CEO Marcus Lemonis said he’s serious about being a good partner. In fact, he says he can help the automakers in NASCAR – Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Toyota – sell more cars. In the past, Chevy has been the official car and truck of Camping World’s retail centers, and each time customers bought an RV or towable (travel trailer, camper, etc.), they received a $500 coupon toward the purchase of a General Motors vehicle. Close to 1,000 of those coupons have been redeemed this year, and Lemonis wants to offer the other automakers the same deal. The trouble is that since Lemonis publicly extended the offer about three weeks ago, he has not heard back from any of the manufacturers. “I guess we’re selling enough cars and trucks that we don’t need something like this to get excited about,” Lemonis said. “I’ve yet to get a call from a manufacturer.”(Sports Business Journal)(11-24-2008)

But for Kimmel and company, the real story was not so much that he didn’t win the championship, but that he got as close as he did.

Plans for the Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway (Pensacola, FL):
Bubba Pollard watched the 2007 Snowball Derby from the grandstands in Pensacola, Florida. He knew he wanted to at least have an opportunity to race in the historic Super Late Model race in 2008. Now he’s looking at living out part of that dream. Pollard will attempt to run both the Snowball Derby and the Allen Turner Snowflake 100, December 3rd through the 7th. “It’s like the Daytona of short track racing. Just to make the Derby means something,” said Pollard. “Some of the good cars go home, and some of the big names go home. So just to make the Derby this year will be something to talk about.” He’s won two 100-lap races there this summer. The Derby is 300 laps with at least three pit stops for tires. The Pensacola track is very abrasive.
A year ago, Taylor Satterfield finished fourth in his first Allen Turner Snowflake 100 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola (FL). The Pro Late Model race has quickly become a very popular tune-up to the Annual Snowball Derby. Every driver who is cutting their teeth in Pro Late Models will be on hand, but perhaps no driver has more momentum than Satterfield going into the event.
Satterfield is coming off his best run of the season at the World Crown 200 at Peach State Speedway. After starting in the top five, Satterfield ran up front all day. In the closing laps, he came on strong and motored his way to a second-place finish. That fact gives him a lot of confidence heading into the Snowflake.
“We have been working on this car real hard. We didn’t have a lot of money to go test like we did the year before. We have done a lot of our setup work at the track this season and it’s been tough, but now we have gotten into a rhythm and it’s really been paying off for us.” www.taylorsatterfieldracing.com
As Super Late Model teams flock to the Florida Panhandle for the 41st Annual Snowball Derby, so do the Pro Late Model teams. So many, in fact, that chances are a full field of talented youngsters will sit out the Allen Turner Snowflake 100, which is the build-up race to the Snowball Derby. Kyle Fowler was good enough to run in the event that saw 67 entries a year ago. Fowler will be gunning for a solid finish in his second attempt at the Five Flags Speedway (FL) event. He finished 14th last year.
“We’re ready, and we think we have a good shot,” said Fowler. “We have run down there once this season, and we felt really good about how the car ran. It would be really cool if we could get a win or have a good finish.
“We have really progressed a good bit this season,” said Fowler. “We have had a lot of good runs. We have learned a lot about fine tuning the setup with the help of Mike Garvey. We have really worked on tire conservation. Last year, we could get a car fast for 50 laps; then it would fade off. Mr. Garvey has helped us to be able to be there at the end of the race.”

When you think of NASCAR families what names come to mind? I’m guessing Earnhardt, Petty, Waltrip, Labonte etc. These families, and certainly many others, are NASCAR’s royalty. They though are not alone in their contributions to a sport that is full of family tradition.
