Thoughts on Phoenix

Thought 1 — Last week I wrote: “Jimmie Johnson did not have the car to beat at Texas. But then again, he did.”

Well, this week he sat on the pole, led the most laps and won the stinkin’ race – that’s the way it is supposed to be done.

With a few drivers having a great close to their season and Carl Edwards chomping at the bit, Johnson left no doubts about who is in control of this Chase. He is.

Johnson not only won, but also added to his lead, now at 141 makers over Edwards. That makes for a non-race at Homestead. It would take a complete disaster for Johnson to lose the title now. He would basically have to implode early in the race in order for Carl Edwards to bring home the bacon. That just ain’t gonna happen. The 24 car might have a DNF, but not the 28.

The best Greg Biffle can hope for is second place and that would mean he has to beat Carl by about 20 positions. So again, the wheels would have to fall off of Carl as well.

Dale Jr. settled into 10th place assuring him a send off on stage in NYC in December but only if they can stay ahead of Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth. That is no easy feat for the 8 team this year. Once again at Phoenix, they had a top 3 car that petered out to a top ten finish. That is not closing the deal. This team and particularly this driver needs to get a killer instinct. Dale Jr. is more like Mark Martin in his driving style and needs to be a bit more like his dad. Sure, we all like Gentleman Mark – but Big E has more titles. Nuff said.

Thought 2 – so a red flag delays the race by about 40 minutes and we have several cautions late in the race. So what does ABC do? Sends the danged race to ESPN2 so we can all watch America’s Funniest Videos??? You have got to be kidding me!!! Jerry Punch said everyone but the east coast was switching. Well guess what Doc – the central time zone ain’t on the east coast. I am lucky enough to have ESPN but many hard working God fearing race lovin’ fans do not. They got screwed.

What a joke and what a slap in the face to NASCAR. Do you think game 6 of the World Series would get bumped? Or an NFL playoff game? Heck, any NFL game? Absolutely not. ABC and ESPN need to get their act together. What an embarrassment to NASCAR.

Thought 3 – Montoya got a little rough yesterday. Kinda fun but he did bring out a late caution needlessly. Dude, you are nowhere near the lap leaders. Relax. Race like that going for the lead, not spinning out a hapless Reed Sorenson.

Thought 4 – Homestead will be a yawner again. Well, as far as title chances go.

Thought 5 – Hate to be thinking of the off-season already, but the 24 and 88 have a lot of work to do. I also can’t wait to see how Shrub brings it next year. RCR had another nice run but not really in contention, what will they change?

Thought 6 – Sponsorship makes the wheels go round. Unless Obama is a big race fan, no bailouts for NASCAR sponsors. Maybe AIG could get into sponsorship. I hear they have lots of our cash. But seriously, we would be looking at smaller fields next year and possibly the loss of at least one major U.S. manufacturer. That will suck.

Last thought – hope Ron Felix is feeling better. Prayers out to ya man.
