Ganassi-DEI Hold Merger Talks
Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and Dale Earnhardt Inc. have entered discussions that could lead to a merger between the two organizations, foxsports.com reported Tuesday. Such a union would bring together the Nos. 41 and 42 cars of Ganassi and the Nos. 1 and No. 8 cars of DEI, according to the report. Juan Montoya drives the No. 42 car, but Ganassi has not named a driver for the No. 41 car. Martin Truex Jr. is the driver of the No. 1 car, and Aric Almirola drives the No. 8, which has not named a sponsor for next year. One of Montoya’s current sponsors, Texaco Havoline, will not return to the car next year, but Ganassi has a partial sponsorship locked in with Wrigley’s for the No. 42.

Delphi Continues with Hendrick Motorsports & JR Motorsports: Delphi announced that it will continue its major associate sponsorship of Hendrick Motorsports during the 2009 Sprint Cup Series season. In addition, Delphi will be the primary sponsor for seven Nationwide Series races with JR Motorsports next year. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) in Las Vegas. Delphi will be the primary sponsor for one Nationwide Series race with driver Tony Stewart in the #5 Delphi Chevy fielded by JR Motorsports. Additionally, Delphi will be the primary sponsor for Brad Keselowski in the JR Motorsports #88 Chevrolet for six Nationwide races in 2009. The race details will be announced in the near future. Delphi also will be an associate sponsor of all 2008 Hendrick Motorsports 2009 Spring Cup entries. Delphi will continue to be featured on the uniforms of all Hendrick Motorsports drivers for the 2009 season, including four-time Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon, two-time defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin. Chase Notes going into Phoenix: Chase Frontrunner #48-Jimmie Johnson’s amazing run of consecutive top 10 finishes in The Chase came to an end at Texas at 12, dating back to last season. In fact, Johnson’s 15th is his worst Chase finish since a 24th in race #4 of 2006 at Talladega. That’s how strong and consistent this team has been. Still, the #48 holds the largest lead with two to go in the five-year history of The Chase. It’s not that #99-Carl Edwards and #16-Greg Biffle aren’t good at Phoenix. It’s just that Jimmie Johnson has been terrific there, winning the last two races at PIR, four straight top 5s and six straight Top 10s. Edwards carded a fourth the last time out at PIR and Biffle had a second in the fall race last year. #18-Kyle Busch’s sixth at Texas moved him ahead of #88-Dale Jr. and #11-Denny Hamlin for 10th place, but he stands only one point ahead of Jr. and three ahead of Hamlin for the ‘chase’ to the stage at the Waldorg in NYC, only the top-10 drivers go to MYC and are on the stage. See more stats and history of the chase on my Chase Stats after Texas page and 2008 Chase News/Rules page.(11-6-2008) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2008/chase/34tms2008chase.htm

McDonald’s Partners With #10 GEM Team at Phoenix: It will be a weekend of firsts for the #10 Dodge of A.J. Allmendinger at Phoenix International Raceway. For the first time since its partnership with Gillett Evernham Motorsports began, McDonald’s will be aboard the #10 Dodge. Allmendinger hasn’t started a Cup race at Phoenix in his 42-race career. He does have a 13th-place finish in his single Nationwide Series start at PIR last year. Sunday marks Allmendinger’s fourth race with GEM. In the first three races he’s posted the 16th most points of any driver. Only a late-race pit lane violation kept Allmendinger from moving even higher.(GEM PR)(11-6-2008)

Irwin paint scheme for McMurray at PIR: This weekend at Phoenix Internationak Raceway, Jamie McMurray will pilot his #26 IRWIN Industrial Tools Ford Fusion for the last time this season. McMurray will participate in IRWIN Industrial Tools’ “Ultimate Tradesman Challenge” championship on Sunday morning. Over 10,000 tradesmen have competed in the challenge and this weekend the four North American finalist will compete for the title of North American Champion and will win an “ultimate” garage by Allied Steel Buildings and a Stage III Roush Performance Ford F-150. The competition will conclude with the North American champion and the Australian Champion competing for the ultimate prize – a shot at winning $1.26 million. IRWIN will also donate $10,000 to the Jamie McMurray Foundation.(RFR PR), see images of the #26 Team Schemes page.(11-6-2008) http://www.jayski.com/schemes/2008/26cup.htm

Donated Petty Enterprises racecar gets Virginia Tech makeover: Race fans attending Virginia Tech’s Thursday night football game against Maryland are in for a treat. Virginia Tech motorsports research center VIPER Service will unveil a new color wrap — burnt orange and Chicago maroon – on one of the Nextel Cup racecars donated by Petty Enterprises earlier this year. The letters “VT” will replace the ubiquitous number “43” associated with racing legend Richard Petty. The car, sporting a Hokie Bird on its roof, will be on display from 4:30 until 7:30pm on the Drillfield as part of the university’s tailgate activities, according to Steve Southward, VIPER Director. VIPER, the Virginia Institute for Performance Engineering and Research facility, is one of several mechanical engineering (ME) labs at Danville’s Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), an outreach partner of Virginia Tech. The VIPER Service vehicle also sports a new Dodge engine and other power-train components, so it is now ready to collect track data for research projects.
Petty and son Kyle donated the car, and a twin, to the Virginia Tech Foundation for use by ME graduate students pursuing degrees at VIPER’s facilities in Halifax County and at IALR. The second car retains its original #43 decal and yellow, red and blue color wrap. “We wanted one of the cars to be a marketing tool for the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, VIPER Service, and Virginia Tech,” said Southward. “And the best way to do that was put a new wrap on it.”
Wrap is a literal term. Few racecars are painted nowadays, according to Southward. Rather, cars are “wrapped” in vinyl sticker sheets – some quite large in size – formed to the car’s body. The basic wrap design doesn’t include the myriad of sponsor stickers and other decals placed all over the vehicle. On the car’s sides, where the doors normally would go, are the letters “VT.” In place of the number on the roof is a Hokie bird. VIPER, the IALR, the Center for Vehicle Systems and Safety (CVeSS) at Virginia Tech, Virginia International Raceway and a list of other research labs and manufacturers will be represented by an assortment of stickers. A series of mechanical engineering equations and actual test data also adorn the car.(VT PR)(11-6-2008)

Phoenix Rookie Notes: #77-Sam Hornish Jr. was the Raybestos Rookie of the Race in the November 2 Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, scoring a 23rd-place finish. Hornish Jr. grabbed top rookie honors for the fourth consecutive race and for the 11th time in 2008. Sam Hornish Jr. leads #01-Regan Smith by four points (198-194) in the Raybestos Rookie standings entering the November 8 Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart are the only Raybestos Rookies to win in 24 Sprint Cup races at Phoenix. Both wins came in the fall event: Stewart won from the pole in 1999, beating Mark Martin to the checkered flag by 2.081 seconds while Busch captured the 2005 event by .609 seconds over Greg Biffle. Stewart is the only Raybestos Rookie to lead the most laps in a race at Phoenix, leading the 1999 fall race three times for 150 laps. Three Raybestos Rookies have won pole positions at Phoenix, all coming in the fall race: Tony Stewart (1999), Casey Atwood (2001) and Ryan Newman (2002).(Camp & Assoc/Raybestos) and see rookie history, notes, standings, rules on my 2008 Rookie Notes Page.(11-6-2008) http://www.jayski.com/stats/2008/roty2008.htm

RCR Reorganizes its Business Unit: Richard Childress Racing has reorganized its business unit to help strengthen the overall performance of the 11-time NASCAR championship-winning organization. Ben Schlosser has been promoted to the position of senior vice president, business operations. Schlosser joined RCR in April 2002 as director of corporate sales and sponsorships and was named vice president of marketing in 2004. In his newly expanded role, departments reporting to him will include partnership marketing, business development, communications, licensing, the RCR Racing Museum, and show car and promotions. “The purpose of this reorganization is to be more efficient for our sponsors and everyone involved in making RCR a success,” said Richard Childress, president and CEO of RCR. “Ben has a very good understanding of the business side of RCR so bringing the communications, licensing and show car departments under his supervision, along with the partnership marketing department, will allow all of those units to work together more seamlessly.” Bill Patterson has been named executive vice president, support services. Patterson began his fulltime tenure at RCR in 1983 and has been a part of all 11 of its NASCAR championships. The departments now under his direction will include finance and accounting, human resources, aviation, and facilities and maintenance. Additional responsibilities will include capital and major expenditures, driver contracts and other contract issues. “Bill has been an asset to RCR since the early 1980s and will continue to be moving forward,” said Childress. “His new responsibilities will allow him to focus more on RCR’s finances and accounting, which has always been important but is even more so in the current economic climate.”(RCR PR)(11-5-2008)

Layoffs at Hendrick, Johnson’s spotter included: During a modest round of layoffs Monday and Tuesday at Hendrick Motorsports, Jimmie Johnson’s spotter, Stevie Reeves, was told he would not return to the #48 Lowe’s Chevy team next season, Reeves confirmed Tuesday night. Reeves and the Hendrick organization part on good terms. The spotter, who helped guide Johnson to his second consecutive Sprint Cup championship in 2007, has already been contacted by other teams and is weighing his options. “They wanted to give me plenty of time to find something before Homestead and not leave me hanging high and dry,” said Reeves, who will spot the final two races of the season for Johnson as he attempts to win a record-tying third straight championship. “Rick Hendrick knows how to treat people, and that’s what makes him so successful. Jimmie Johnson is a class act, and the only thing I regret is that I won’t be working with him next year, but I’m going to land on my feet OK.”(Sporting News)(11-5-2008)

Las Vegas Cup race gets new name; longer race: The Sprint Cup Series event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 1, 2009 will be sponsored by Shelby Automobiles. The event will be lengthened to 427 miles and will be called the “Shelby 427.” Together, LVMS and Shelby will market a Las Vegas Motor Speedway Limited Edition Shelby 427 package for the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. LVMS President Chris Powell and Shelby Automobiles founder Carroll Shelby made the announcement Wednesday at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas. “We are ecstatic to have the legendary Shelby name on our 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup race,” Powell said. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for us to give added exposure to the Shelby brand that has, over the years, become synonymous with the best in high-performance cars.” Bruton Smith, founder and CEO of LVMS parent company Speedway Motorsports, and Carroll Shelby have been friends for many years. “We are thrilled to combine the efforts of our two companies in this sponsorship,” Smith said. “Carroll and his team have long been known for the high quality of their work and the tremendous popularity of their cars.”
Carroll Shelby has driven and designed race and sports cars for more than 50 years. His company, Shelby Automobiles, located its manufacturing facility at the speedway complex as the anchor tenant in 1998. The company uses the oval and road courses for its research and development. This is the first time Shelby Automobiles has sponsored a NASCAR event. “The Shelby name will be forever linked to racing because of our unrivaled success in competition over the years,” said Amy Boylan, president of Shelby Automobiles. “The Ford Shelby Mustang programs have allowed us to begin exploring motorsports options again. While we determine the series best suited to our products, we wanted to raise our profile in the racing community, and the NASCAR race next to our campus presented the ideal opportunity. Shelby was the first small American sports car and muscle car manufacturer to win world championships, and now we’re the first to sponsor a NASCAR race.”
“We’re thrilled to have our name on the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Shelby 427,” Carroll Shelby said. “From drag racing to Formula 1, I’ve been involved in just about every type of motor racing except NASCAR. I love the competition, passion and excitement of the fans and teams in NASCAR. We’re offering real enthusiasts an opportunity to be part of something really special through this program.”
Since its inception in 1998, the Sprint Cup race at LVMS has been run at a length of 400.5 miles, which is 267 laps around the 1.5-mile oval. In order to accommodate the new event name, the race will be increased by 27 miles and will feature 285 laps.
As part of the one-year race sponsorship, Shelby Automobiles will market a Las Vegas Motor Speedway Limited Edition Shelby 427 package for the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. Owners of 2007 and 2008 Shelby GT500s with the post title Super Snake package on their muscle car can purchase the limited edition “pace car” upgrade on a first-come, first-served basis by emailing shelby427@lvms.com. Shelby enthusiasts may have their names added to a waiting list for the package by emailing shelbywaitinglist@lvms.com. The upgraded package will include Mr. Shelby’s personal autograph as well as many other event-related add-ons. Only 427 of these packages will be available through Shelby Automobiles. Those who purchase a Shelby 427 package will also receive special race tickets and other amenities, including the opportunity to serve as the race’s honorary starter.
The 2009 NASCAR Weekend will kick off with qualifying for the Shelby 427 Sprint Cup Series race on Friday, Feb. 27. The Sam’s Town 300 Nationwide Series race is set for Saturday, Feb. 28. Tickets for all 2009 events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, including the Shelby 427 on March 1, can be purchased by calling 1-800-644-444 or online at www.lvms.com.(LVMS PR)(11-5-2008)

Saturday afternoon at Phoenix, Denny Hamlin will be back in his racing element, strapped into a thoroughly proven winner on the Nationwide Series circuit this season. First and foremost on his mind will be making the DLP HDTV two-for-three on the year and, in the bigger picture of things, making the Joe Gibbs Racing organization NASCAR’s first 20-race winner in Nationwide Series history. Denny Hamlin – Driver, No. 18 DLP HDTV® NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry at Phoenix International Raceway. You grew up racing Late Models on the Saturday-night short tracks in Virginia. Does racing at a flat track like Phoenix bring you back to your roots?“Phoenix reminds me more of racing when I was younger, for sure. I spent plenty of time early in my career running flat tracks in Late Models and PIR feels like that to me. Racing at Phoenix brings back some great memories from the Late Model days, when I started my career. Phoenix is one of my favorite places to race and a big reason for that is that it reminds me of the weekend short track racing back home in Virginia.” (DLPHDTV) (11-05-08)

Benson to Red Horse Racing in 2009? UPDATE 4 Benson leaving BDR at seasons end: Craftsman Trucks Series points leader Johnny Benson is leaving Bill Davis Racing at season’s end, a source close to Benson told ESPN. This is Benson’s fifth year with Bill Davis Racing. Bill Davis Racing refused to comment on the story. Benson has not confirmed any plans for the 2009 season and has left open the possibility of retirement. Coincidentally, BDR announced Tuesday that 19-year old Tayler Malsam has signed on to drive a fourth Toyota in the Truck Series next year.(ESPN.com)(11-5-2008)
UPDATE 4: During an interview with Johnny Benson on Sirius Radio’s Tradin’ Paint with Steve Post & Chocolate Myers, Benson commented on leaving BDR…”At this point in time, about three or four weeks ago I had a conversation with Bill [Davis] and, of course, the people up at Bill Davis [Racing] and I’m opting to try and do something different. Now, I threw around the idea of maybe retiring at the end of the season but when I had said that a bunch of opportunities come up. It was like, you know what, am I going to retire? Am I going to try to do a part time deal, go have some fun and spend time with the family and go do just some off races and things of this nature? The truck series is such a great series but you can go run 10 Cup races and make more money than to run the whole season. But I don’t necessarily know if I want to do that either. Some of it is up in the air but I think in the last two or three weeks there have been some opportunities for me to do something that I may like. Now it seems kind of odd to do that, to be in a situation to run for a championship and then want to leave but there’s a couple of other little issues and things of this nature. But the thing I like about this business, whether we win this championship or not, when I came over to Bill’s they were about 25^th in points, 25^th to 28^th or something like that. We were able to build a team and move it up to a championship contender scenario. I like doing those things. But I want to win a championship. I want to finish that off. But it is very cool to do those types of things and I enjoyed that aspect of it. Obviously, I’d really like to get a championship so if we can get that done this year that’d be great. What I’m going to do next year, I really don’t know. There’s a couple things that some people had laid out in front of me that are tempting. So, that’s where I stand. It basically stands that I won’t be at Bill’s. But Bill and Gail gave me a great opportunity, along with Toyota, to come and have some fun and help build a team to make it a championship contender and I think all of us, as a group, are very proud of that and we’d like to finish this off for Bill, for sure.”(Sirius Radio)(11-5-2008)

Down To The Wire
11-05-2008 | Tom Jensen, TruckSeries.com
For Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday Jr., it’s game on as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series heads to Phoenix International Raceway for Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150, race No. 24 of 25 in the 2008 season. Although Hornaday has made up ground on Benson in six of the last seven races, the bespectacled Midwesterner still has the NCTS points lead, an ever-so-slim margin of just 6 points. Phoenix, which hosted the first-ever NCTS race in 1995, should prove to be a difficult challenge for the two points leaders and the rest of the field. The one-mile PIR oval has two very different shaped sets of corners, with Turns 1 and 2 radically different in size and shape from Turns 3 and 4, so setups are always a matter of compromise: It’s impossible to get it right at both ends of the track.

The Nascar Insiders
What’s the Deal with Bill Davis?
Bill Davis Racing has been a lightning rod for merger rumors this season. With the loss of Caterpillar as a sponsor on the #22 ride earlier this season, the fate of the Cup team was put into question and subsequently became a likely contender for acquisition. Now as the season winds to an end, the focus has shifted away from the Cup side of the organization to BDR’s thriving truck teams.

Seeing Beyond the Color
by Carol Einarsson
History was made this week, as witnessed by millions. Two men vying for only one position that would leave one victorious and one in defeat. The anticipation leading up to the day of decision was watched globally, and as the world watched, we saw the first man of color emerge victorious. That man, of course, is Lewis Hamilton.

Top 20 Over the Past 10 – The Fertilizer Needs To Hit The Fan Again This Week – by Ron Thornton
The green flag will wave at Phoenix, but Jimmie Johnson’s #48 will just sit there. Maybe it will run for a few laps before the engine blows up or a downed tire sends him to the wall. Just maybe either Scott Speed or David Gilliland will get mad at him, and from what we’ve seen the results of that could be dire indeed for the two-time defending champ.

NASCAR top 10 Power Rankings: Texas – by Jeffrey Boswell
Jimmie Johnson: Johnson started seventh and immediately was faced with a tight-handling car. On lap 96, race leader Carl Edwards put Johnson a lap down, and the #48 car never returned to the lead lap. Johnson still finished 15th and now has a 106 point lead over Edwards in the Cup standings.
